David A. Levenhagen

David was born on April 7th, 1947 and passed away at home May 15th, 2023 after a courageous battle of 3 years with cancer. He was a man of faith who was loving and one of a kind.

He leaves behind his brother, Tom (Evelyn) of LaPorte; his parents; younger brother, Dan; and his son, Ryan Higley, whom he loved dearly are waiting for him with open arms in heaven.

Dave is also survived by his wife, Janice, the love of his life of 39 years; and the following whom he loved with all his heart, his daughter, Michele (Thom) Kirby; grandchildren, Kaemon and Kaiya Kirby all of Grafton, Ohio; granddaughter, Ashlyn Higley; and special daughter-in-law, Caroline McCord of Carmel, IN. There are many brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss his support and friendship. A special thank you to Rob and Becky Reider and Dale and Lynn Clapp for transportation and all the love and support during this difficult time.

Dave attended St. John’s Lutheran School and was a member of the church. He graduated from LaPorte High School in 1965 and attended the University of Oklahoma.

Dave proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1966 -1968. Returning home, he held several positions before joining Horizon Bank in 1974. He always thought of himself as a shy man, but he had a way of making anyone he came in contact with feel like he was their personal banker. Dave worked hard and held the position of Vice President of retail lending and President of the Loan Store. He volunteered and was on the board with several foundations during this time.  He retired from the bank in 1998 and has stayed connected with many of his coworkers through the years.

Dave owned and established Vintage Financial Services in 1998. He wanted to provide more of a one-on-one lending program to help others and also provide counseling on budgeting and managing your money.

Dave was a generous man. He loved helping others but didn’t like being the center of attention or taking credit for his good deeds.

Dave enjoyed traveling, golf, his friends and family, and most of all, he enjoyed life. There will be a void in our hearts and his love and kindness will always be remembered.

Best known as “Kathy”, the all-knowing, backbone of the La Porte County Fairgrounds, she was the one person everyone went to for information, directions, and help at the fair office, and was indispensable especially before and during the Fair.

Born in 1943 in Michigan City, IN to the late Frank and Frieda (Inauen) Herrbach, she was an exceptional student and dancer growing up; a typical ‘50’s “Bobby Soxer”.  She had to be on her P’s & Q’s, though, since her father was La Porte County sheriff, and they lived at the county jail between 1954-1962.  Despite this, a brave young man named Richard Zigler courted her, and they dated until they married in Hanau, Germany on May 4th, 1968.

Kathy is survived by her husband of 55 years, Richard L. Zigler; daughters, Dawn (David) Zigler-Cramer and Joy Zigler; brother, William (Joann) Herrbach; niece, Aimee Herrbach; and nephew,  Kristopher Herrbach; as well as numerous great-nieces, cousins, and family.

Darryl Wade Bunch

Darryl Wade Bunch, known affectionately as DB, was a man of great intelligence, boundless adventure, and keen analysis. Born on the third of November in the year 1958, in LaPorte, Indiana to Violet & Hoy Bunch, he embarked on a journey that would span the course of his life until the second of May, 2023, when he took his final bow in Kingsford Heights, Indiana. The cause of his departure remains a mystery, much like the man himself.

Darryl's family, survives him and continues to weave the threads of his memory. His sister, Joan Fugate, resides in Richlands, Virginia, while his brother Gary Bunch lives in Michigan City, Indiana. His sister Sheila Garcia calls Houston, Texas, her home. DB's nieces, Miranda Polite, Vonda Stone, and Lori Jessie, and his nephew, Josh Klement, carry on his legacy with pride and honor. Alas, Darryl was preceded in death by his older brother, Mikey; his father, Hoy; his mother, Violet; his sister, Debbie, also known as Lavender Violet Gardener; his brother-in-law, Bud Fugate; and his nephew, David Fugate. Their spirits, no doubt, welcomed him with open arms as he crossed the threshold into the great beyond.

DB's life was a grand adventure, filled with the exploration of our beautiful land and the depths of his own soul. His passions led him to traverse the country, leaving no stone unturned in his quest for knowledge and experience. He hiked through the forests, kayaked upon the rivers, and delved into the mysteries of the Earth. His love for music, especially classic rock served as the soundtrack to his journey, the melodies and harmonies echoing through the ages as he played the bass guitar with the fervor of a true rocker.

In the style of the great William Shakespeare, let us now pay tribute to the man who was Darryl:

To the world, he was a traveler bold,
A seeker of truth, a story untold.
From LaPorte's embrace to Kingsford's shore,
He ventured far, forever craving more.

In the company of family, love did bloom,
A tapestry woven, unbroken by gloom.
Sister and brother, niece and nephew,
Together they stood, a bond strong and true.

Adventure called, and Darryl did heed,
With boots on his feet and a heart full of need.
He scaled the mountains, he paddled the streams,
He explored the world, and he followed his dreams.

With bass guitar in hand, he strummed and he played,
The soundtrack of life, a melody unswayed.
Classic rock's embrace, a muse to his soul,
He danced to the rhythm, a man uncontrolled.

Intelligent, adventurous, analytical, and wise,
DB's spirit soared, unbound by the skies.
A mystery in life, a mystery in death,
His memory lives on, with every breath.

Farewell, dear DB, your journey complete,
May you find peace and rest in your eternal retreat.
Your legacy lives on, in the hearts that you've touched,
Darryl Wade Bunch, you shall be missed very much.

And so, we bid adieu to Darryl Wade Bunch, a man who lived life to the fullest and left an indelible mark upon the hearts of those who knew him. May his memory serve as a beacon of inspiration, a reminder to embrace the adventures that life has to offer, and to cherish the bonds of family and friendship. Rest in peace, dear Darryl, and may the music of your life continue to play on in the hearts of those who loved you.

Nicholas "Nick" Andrew Ames

Nicholas "Nick" Andrew Ames, 32, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on April 28th, 2023. Born on June 2th, 1990, in La Porte, Indiana, Nick was the beloved son of Dwight and Jody Ames and a cherished brother, uncle, grandson, and friend.

Nick is survived by his parents; grandmother Carol Ames; brother Matthew (Randi) Ames; sister Tammy (Ronaldo) Bitencourt; Sarah (fiancé Eric O’Brien) Ames; sister Emily (Josue) Raya; brother Kyle Ames; sister Renee (Zachary) Wilson; and nieces and nephews Bruno Bitencourt, Lucas Bitencourt, Addison Ames, Haylie Ames, Chloe Bitencourt, Julia Bitencourt, Alvin Raya, and Lorenzo Bitencourt. He also leaves behind numerous adoring aunts, uncles, and cousins. Nick was preceded in death by niece and nephew Kayla and Kayden Ames, as well as several grandparents.

Raised in Union Mills, Nick attended South Central Schools throughout his childhood, where he excelled academically and graduated with honors from South Central High School in 2009. His determination to succeed and commitment to learning was evident in all aspects of his life.

Nick's love for music was apparent from a young age, and he was an integral part of the South Central High School music program. He participated in marching band, pep band, concert band, and jazz band, where his talents as a musician were widely recognized. His dedication to the band earned him the prestigious John Phillip Sousa award and the "Esprit de Corp" (Spirit of the Group) award during his high school years.

A true sports enthusiast, Nick was especially passionate about baseball. Throughout high school, he either played on the team or kept the scorebook for the team every season. His love for the game extended beyond the field, as he announced baseball games for a season in high school. Nick's unique voice and enthusiasm for the sport led to an article being written about him, titled "The Dulcet Tones of Nick Ames." Nick was fortunate enough to work in a field that he was passionate about. Sports was a huge part of his life. He even began teaching his niece about football at only 3 days old.

Nick's creativity and charisma shined through in his involvement with the drama club at South Central High School. He brought joy and laughter to all who had the pleasure of watching him perform on stage. His dedication to helping others was evident in his involvement with the Leo Club, National Honor Society, and the German Club.

A proud graduate of Brigham Young University-Idaho, Nick earned a Bachelor of Science in Recreational Sports Management. During his time at BYU-Idaho, Nick was involved in various rec leagues, including softball and bowling, (with his little sister), and even refereed leagues he didn't participate in, such as flag football, futsol, and basketball. His rec softball team, the Boomstix, won the league championship, and Nick was a proud captain. He also worked for the student-run recreation department, where he was loved by everyone he worked and interacted with. At the end of his undergraduate program, he interned and worked for the South Bend Cubs and loved every minute of it. He made many friends and touched many people. Any time he came home to visit after leaving the Cubs, he made a special effort to go visit Mary Lou in the South Bend Cubs gift shop. The Cubs were his team, even in the minor leagues.

Nick's passion for sports led him to pursue a Master's in Sports Management from Indiana State University. While completing his degree, he interned and worked for Rose Hulman. Before even graduating, Nick interviewed for and was hired as the assistant director for recreation and club sports at the University of South Carolina-Upstate.

Throughout his life, Nick was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served an honorable mission in the Alaska Anchorage Mission from August 2009 to August 2011. He received the Duty to God award during his youth.

Nick's dedication to his work and passion for sports led to a significant increase in student involvement in recreation and club sports at USC-Upstate, where he was instrumental in starting the E-Sports program, securing funding, and setting up the club space on campus.

In 2022, Nick accepted a position as the assistant director of recreation wellness - sports programs at Butler University. Although it was a lateral career move, Nick was enthusiastic about the opportunity to be closer to his family. He showered his family with "Butler Bulldogs" gear, especially his nieces and nephews, and began teaching classes, including pickleball. Nick was recently admitted to Butler University's MBA program and was due to begin classes on May 13th. His main career goal was always to work for Notre Dame, but after less than a year, he frequently told friends and family that he would be happy to work for Butler for the rest of his life… and he did.
