Jessie "Jeanie" Emojean (Lell) Nesler

Jessie “Jeanie” Emojean (Lell) Nesler, 98, of La Porte, Indiana went home to heaven on Thursday, October 6, 2022. She is survived by her daughter, Clare Nesler Alexander; son-in-law, David Alexander; granddaughter, Elise Alexander Kunkel; grandson-in-law, Raun Kunkel; great-grandchildren, Amelia, Silas, and Harrison Kunkel; and countless cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Jeanie was born on December 21, 1923 in Senath, Missouri to William Henry and Ella (Barns) Lell. She is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Junior Nesler; son, Robert Earl; mother; father; and siblings. She had six siblings - 2 sisters, Rhoda and Wanda, and 4 brothers, Buster, Hap, Earl and Bill.  She often spoke of all the fun she would have with Buster and Hap, who were close in age to her.

After the death of her mother, Jeanie began working full-time as a maid and nanny in order to help contribute to the family’s finances during the Great Depression. Later, Jeanie moved to St. Louis in 1940 where she met her husband, Clarence, on a blind date with another couple. They married just four months later.

Jeanie faced much adversity in her early life. Not only did her mother pass away when she was just 12 years old, but Jeanie gave birth to a stillborn son and then became a widow when she was nine months pregnant with Clare, due to a tragic car accident that killed Clarence and his brother, Harley. Jeanie relied heavily on her faith in Jesus to carry her through these life altering events. She came from great poverty of the Dust Bowl in the 1930’s and worked hard to rise above her circumstances to provide a good life for Clare and herself.

No one could argue that Jeanie was always a hard worker. Throughout her life she held a number of jobs including field worker, maid, nanny, WWII factory worker and many other jobs. In 1963. she moved herself and her daughter from St. Louis to Evanston, Illinois. There she found a rewarding career working in life insurance at Washington National, where she worked for 27 years, ultimately to the position of assistant manager. Through this journey from field worker to executive, Jeanie always remained humble and remembered where she came from, and the ways God’s faithfulness had sustained her.

Jeanie moved to La Porte, Indiana in 1990 to be close to her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. She was a doting grandmother and lived with Clare and David during Elise‘s childhood, running her to after school activities, baking for every school bake sale, and giving all of her love.

She was a very active member of her church, Calvary Baptist of La Porte. She spent many years serving as church treasurer and helped wherever was needed, from teaching Sunday school and assisting in the nursery to making delicious dishes for church potlucks and special dinners.

Jeanie often said that her later years were her best years, when she really came out of her shell. In her 80’s Jeanie lent her voice to many singing groups, including the local senior singing group the “Fun Follies,” and could often be seen at open mic nights at Temple News Agency, “Jam Nights” throughout the area counties and “Singspiration” gatherings at her church. She found great joy in playing the autoharp, which she taught herself to play at the age of 83.

Second to her faith, family is what Jeanie held most dear. She deeply loved her close family and was generous with hugs and cuddles, often reminding her great grandchildren that a “real” hug means you have to squeeze “real” hard! Even into her 90’s, she was most at home and happy with a baby on her lap.

Jeanie will be remembered for many things, but mostly for her great words of wisdom, her beautiful prayers, her famous fried chicken, rich singing harmonies and her bright spirit. She has been the matriarch of all matriarchs and all who had the honor of knowing her are better for it. She will be remembered as a “Good Ole Girl” for generations to come.

A time of visitation will be held from 11 a.m. (CST) until the start of the Celebration of Life Service at 1p.m. (CST) on October 13, 2022, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 2900 Monroe St., La Porte.  Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the family c/o Elise Kunkel, 2900 Monroe Street, La Porte, IN 46350 or to the donor’s choice. Condolences may be shared with the family on www.cutlercares.com.

“Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. Proverbs 31:29-31 NIV

Shirley Genette (Meeker) Scaggs

A blessed soul and one who blessed us departed to heaven on Wednesday morning, August 24, 2022. Shirley Genette (Meeker) Scaggs, age 85 of LaPorte, Indiana, was a mother, grandmother, a hard worker, a good friend, and a radiant beam of sunshine. She was born on February 28, 1937, in Veedersburg, Indiana. Her parents were John M. and Daisy (Phillips) Meeker.

Shirley graduated from Veedersburg High School in 1955 and married Robert Scaggs on December 31, 1957, in the Luray Caverns in West Virginia. The couple first lived in Crawfordsville, Indiana and moved briefly to San Bernardino, California. They returned to Indiana living in Valparaiso, then for most of her life in Knox (Bass Lake), and then on to Michigan City and La Porte. She and Bob had eight children, the eldest, Rick, predeceased her in 2010 and their infant daughter, Patty, unexpectedly passed in 1968. Husband, Robert, passed away on March 29, 1988. Continuing Shirley’s legacy are her children, Karen Small and her husband, Douglas, of South Bend; Michael Scaggs and his wife, Kay, of Clearwater, Florida; Mark Scaggs and his wife, Patti, of Knox; Beth Poehl and her husband, Mark, of La Porte; Kathy Weber and her husband, Scott, of Indianapolis; and Debbie Schlang and her husband, Steve, of Scroggins, Texas. Shirley wrote that she considered her children to be her “Jewels.” Shirley was blessed with 13 grandchildren – Rick Scaggs (Mindy); Miles Small & Kemmery Small Keultjes (Charlton); Dustin Scaggs; Jeania Gennette Scaggs St. John (Jason) & Sarah Scaggs Washington; Ariana & Specialist Lucas Poehl, who sadly passed away last year; Annie, Sam, & Ben Weber; and Hana & Jake Schlang. Shirley also found herself with 10 great-grandchildren - Allie & Kelsey St. John; Trey, Olivia & Alex Conner; Henry Small; Maive, Lana, & Kline Keultjes; and Patrick Scaggs. Shirley was also preceded in death by her siblings, Patricia Mazac, Kathleen Matthews, and John Meeker. She is survived by her youngest sister, Lura (Richard) Slaughter of Michigan City.

Shirley worked for more than 25 years for Sears as a parts manager at its stores in Knox, Michigan City and Merrillville. After her retirement, she went on to work several years as a recess attendant at Critchfield Elementary School in LaPorte where she was affectionately referred to as “G-Ma” and “Grandma Shirley.”

Shirley was multi-talented. She was a great cook with her specialty being fruit pies with their tender, flaky crust. She made “sit tight” pie crust for her children & grandchildren by taking the remaining pie dough and sprinkling cinnamon sugar on top. It baked quicker than the pie, so her children and grandchildren could “sit tight,” enjoying the sugary crust while they waited. She was an expert seamstress and an avid quilter. She sewed her children’s Halloween costumes and the “Scaggs kids,” as they were known around Bass Lake, would typically win first place at Bass Lake’s Halloween parties. She made T-shirt quilts for all of her graduating grandchildren, and she spent her last few years making yo-yo quilts for nearly everyone in the family from gathered fabrics and sentimental pieces of clothing. She collected teacups and teapots, and held dainty tea parties with her grandchildren, teaching them to drink tea with their “pinkies up.” She loved visiting her family, traveling wherever they were, including Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Texas, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Germany where she even went downhill skiing. Shirley had a green, green thumb. She grew her garden with lush vegetables, sharing with friends and family, and planted vibrant flowers around the family home with potted plants inside. Most autumns, Shirley and her daughters canned fruits and vegetables for the upcoming year. Her grandchildren anxiously awaited the holidays, hoping they would receive canned jams and jellies from their “G-Ma.” She was an animal lover and, on more than one occasion, became the next stopping point for a pet which one of her children was no longer able to keep. She was the family’s go to dog/cat sitter. She was a voracious reader, always exchanging books with her daughters and granddaughters. Oh, we almost forgot, she was also an expert “line dancer.” On Tuesday nights, she made it known that she was busy and would go out with her cousin, Marcia Averit, to the Senior Center in Michigan City and dance her heart out! Unfortunately, she was too early for America’s Got Talent. She was the kind of grandmother that attended many of her grandchildren’s school and extracurricular activities, including climbing the dunes in her 80s.

We are incredibly blessed to have Shirley in our lives. She was only 4’11”, but she was bursting with love, joy, and acceptance. When she smiled, her whole face glowed, her cheeks bubbled and rose, and her eyes glinted. There was a warmth that penetrated your very soul. She made everyone feel welcome, she accepted people as they were, and she hugged them with her whole being. Good fortune traveled with her - she could find a four-leaf clover in nearly any lawn or field. We are so lucky to have her as a mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Indeed, several of her daughter’s ex-boyfriends came to her home to visit with her. She will be forever missed and never forgotten. She was our four-leafed clover.

Shirley spent the last months of her life at Rittenhouse Assisted Living in Indianapolis. The staff there were wonderful, and we want to thank them for the help and compassion they provided to Shirley and her family. While there, she benefited from the expertise and understanding of Dr. Kevin McNaulty with the Center for Healthy Aging. In lieu of flowers, Shirley’s family requests donations be made to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (https://curealz.org) and American Brain Foundation (https://www.americanbrainfoundation.org).

Lee graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, the third generation of Levines to do so.  He majored in literature and was awarded the distinguished Hopwood Award for Writing at the university.  His love of all sports led him to publish his 1988 book, Bird, The Making of an American Sports Legend, a best seller, chronicling the life of NBA basketball star, Larry Bird, and the Indiana basketball culture.  Printed in half a dozen languages, the book sold well around the world, both in hardback and paperback.

Upon graduation, Lee became a high school English and literature teacher.  He taught in high schools in New York, Miami, and New Jersey.  Lee also worked with high school theater productions and coached basketball.  In 2012, Lee founded Ideal College Guidance, where he worked one on one with students to help them find the right college to suit their wishes, educational, and career goals.  Lee's students came from all over the United States and many European countries.  He loved and excelled at his work and forged meaningful relationships with students and their families.

He was an adoring father, stopping at nothing to give Izzy every opportunity possible.  Lee and Izzy fully embraced the variety and vibrancy of New York City, exploring activities such as Izzy's martial arts pursuits at nationally competitive levels.  Father and son enjoyed the huge array of ethnic food and music, attended sports events, especially tennis, explored toy and bookstores, and rode and memorized virtually every stop and line of the New York Subway System.

At La Porte High School, Lee enjoyed much success on the debate and tennis teams.  No surprise then, that he was a brilliant conversationalist, with enthusiasm for all things intellectual.  He was a fervent follower of politics, music, all sports, and the contemporary book scene.

Lee will be dearly missed by many close, loyal friends with whom he communicated often over numerous years, despite great distance.

The family of Lee Daniel Levine regrets to inform you that the memorial service and interment for him has had to be postponed indefinitely due to family illness.

Thank you in advance for your understanding at this very sad time.

Charles (Pappy) E. Daniel Sr.

Charles (Pappy) E. Daniel Sr., 87, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Friday September 30, 2022 at his home in La Porte, IN with his family by his side.

He was born July 8, 1935 in Caruthersville, Missouri, the son of Clyde E. Daniel and Jessie A. (McKinght) Daniel.

Charles retired from Howmet in La Porte after 33 years as a manufacturing engineer. He was a member of the American Legion Post 400 Fish Lake and the Stillwell Rod and Gun Club.  Charles enjoyed many things in his life. He loved to garden, was an avid reader, pretty good pool player, playing on many pool leagues throughout his life. He loved watching World Wrestling Federation and old westerns on TV. I'm told he was quite the handyman as well. He spent a lot of time learning about the history of our country and spend his vacations visiting Civil War battle fields. Charles spent years as a Boy Scout Master throughout his kid's childhoods. Many times, he would take his family on trips to visit the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee, usually camping by a flowing river. But Charles biggest passion in life was his wife, his family, grand kids, great-grandkids, and a great-great-grandchild.

On August 22, 1953, in La Porte, he married Mary B. Daniel who survives.

He is also survived by his six sons, Charles (Helen Gee) Daniel Jr. of La Porte, IN, Mark (Vickie) Daniel of Hebron, IN, William (Shelley) Daniel of La Porte, IN, Gerald (Shelly) Daniel of La Porte, IN, Clyde (Millie) Daniel of La Porte, IN, and Paul (Ramona) Daniel of Fish Lake, IN; a daughter, Julie (Greg) Spence of Walkerton, IN; two sisters, Judy (Butch) McPherson of La Porte, IN, and Patricia (Gary) Collings of La Porte, IN; fifteen grandchildren, Angie (Bill), Charles, III, McKenzie (Tom), Adam (Lindsey), Ryan (Jerome), Sarah, Danielle (Nate), Andrew (Erica), Mary, Paul, III, Robert, Megan, Nick, William, Jessie; twenty-three great-grandchildren, Jill, Savannah, Peyton, Johnathan, Raegan, Dillion, Jackson, Lane, Paige, Calvin, Allyana, Abigail, Lee, Bentley, William, Dennis, Annabelle, Clayton, Cameron, Michael, Korie Mae, Serenity, Wyatt; great-great-grandchild, Emerson;
