Jim Miller

Our beloved father and champion passed away unexpectedly on December 17th.

He was the youngest of four rambunctious boys, and he married the love of his life at an early age.

Our mother, Marilyn, was the center of his universe and he never wanted to go anywhere without her. Together for almost 60 years (married for almost 58), my mother could not have married a more doting husband. At one of his anniversaries, he sent me an email where he calculated the number of hours he had been married to her. He taught us that loving your spouse to that degree meant that you had so much more love to give to everybody else. Our father was a civil engineer by trade.

In his younger days, he played softball and went camping. He could always be counted on to make the repairs around the house. And rocks… don’t get me started on the rocks. He moved them around the yard to whatever new place my mother needed them to go. It was the best workout plan ever.

Our father believed in the importance of family and spent decades as an amateur genealogist, researching one branch of our family tree back to 100AD. We learned that we are the 40th great-grandchild of Charlemagne and related to the kings and queens of Sweden. That never got us far today. He loved visiting his hometown in Indiana and all of his relatives.

I am so unbelievably blessed to have had such a wonderful dad for all of these years. I fear there is a hole in my heart that will remain forever unfilled.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Baker Miller, and his three children: Laura Kesner, Patti Huth, and Tom Miller, and two grandchildren: Tara and Riley Huth.

(Nanette) Dudeck and Thomas (Vera) Dudeck; nieces, Angela (Mike) Blankenbaker, Stephani (Kristopher) Pullins, Crystal Garriott, and a nephew, Scott Mackey. He was preceded in death by his father.

Rich is a veteran who served four years in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed tractor pulling, attending car shows, and cruising around in his T-bucket. He enjoyed antique shopping and reminiscing about old toys, TV shows, and other items from his childhood. Rich was thoughtful and generous and loved showering his family with unique, funny, and unforgettable gifts. He always loved making family and friends laugh with his animated stories and expressions. Rich was a wonderful uncle to children in the family, blood-related or not. He will be remembered not only by the funny memories he made but also by the many special gifts he has given over the years that may be seen all around our homes. He was greatly loved and will be hugely missed.

Susan E. Warnke

Susan E. (Turk) Warnke, 69, of Koontz Lake, Indiana, beloved and loving wife, mother, sister, and hero, moved on to heaven on December 7th, 2022, after a brief illness.

Sue was born to the late Robert and Eleanor Turk on June 26th, 1953, graduated from LaPorte High School in 1971, and attended Indiana University. Sue married Paul Warnke in 1971, in Augsburg, Germany, and they made their lives and raised their sons in Germany, LaPorte, New Salisbury, and Koontz Lake, Indiana.

She is survived by Paul and their four sons: Adam (Rachael) of Carmel, Indiana; Robert (Maha) of Hurstbourne, Kentucky; Aaron (Linda) of Singapore; and Andrew of Koontz Lake, and two granddaughters, Anna and Grace. She is also survived by five siblings: Richard, Charles, James, Peter, and Nancy.

She led by example and was humbly proud of always working harder than was required. She liked to garden, cook, fish, plan parties, listen to music, watch her favorite shows, and always found a reason for an adventure - hopefully in or on the water. But more than anything, Sue taught people to selflessly love unconditionally, cherish family and friends, never meet a stranger, or leave a kind word unsaid, always find a reason for a party, and always fight for one more day to do it all again.

She was her family’s heart, conscience, and inspiration. Sue was perhaps the strongest and most loving woman we will ever know, and an abundant mother to many who opened her heart and home to all. Sue’s favorite holiday was Thanksgiving, and her eyes absolutely lit up with pride whenever she was with or talking about her boys and viewed them as her greatest accomplishment.

Pursuant to Susan’s wishes, there will be no ceremony at this time. There will be a raucous celebration of her life in the summer during weather more consistent with her disposition and personality, and because celebrating her life with the sun reflecting off the water and the wind in your hair is the only way it should be done.

John A. Doyle

John A. Doyle of Michigan City, IN passed away on Wednesday, December 7,
2022.

John A. Doyle was born on September 20, 1934, in Cassopolis, Michigan to the late John and Florence Doyle.  From there his family moved to Laporte, Indiana, and finally settled in Michigan City, Indiana.

He had two main passions in life, taking care of his family and his civil engineering and land surveying business.  In October of 1955, he met his mentor Donald C. Ford when he applied for a job. Later, Mr. Ford colluded with his wife’s grandmother and made it possible for him to attend college (Although he was unaware of Mr. Ford's part in the plot until much later.)  John graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1961 from Indiana Technical College. Prior to his attendance at college, he had worked as a member of the survey crew for the City Engineer of LaPorte, Indiana, and in the same capacity for the construction of the cross-country Standard Oil pipeline. Those experiences led to his teaching first-year courses in both the Civil Engineering and Land Surveying programs during the last two years of college.

In 1962 he established the first phase of his business as an associate firm with Donald C. Ford, Engineers, and Land Surveyors until he incorporated John Doyle & Associates as an independent entity in 1973. He was a Registered Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor in both Indiana and Michigan.

During his 60 years in business, he has had an impact on everyone’s lives who visits or lives in northwestern Indiana.  He may have planned and designed the roads you drive on and the storm and sanitary sewer systems you use.   There is a chance that the design of the subdivision you live in, or the shopping centers you visit may have been a project in which he was involved.  Even the bridge you cross, the highway interchange you drive on, or the grocery store parking lot you park in may have been the product of his pencil. His eldest daughter use to joke that you can park your boat, build your home in a subdivision, and flush your toilet because of her dad.

This is especially true for the Town of Trail Creek Indiana, where John served as consulting engineer from 1968-2021.  He was the City Engineer for the City of LaPorte, IN from 1961-1962, and the City Engineer for the city of Michigan City, IN from 1969-1972.  From 1972-1984 he was a principal in the firm of United Blacktop Pavers.  He continued working until 2 weeks prior to his death on December 7, 2022.

Around 1967 Mel Fath began planning the construction of New Durham Estates in Westville, IN and selected John Doyle & Associates at random from the phone book.  That was the beginning of a lifelong friendship between the two men and their wives, Jean Anne, and Thelma.  Mel and John talked every morning for over 40 years until Mel’s death in 2020.

He enjoyed old cars, Indy and NASCAR car racing, Stroh’s beer, the Green Bay Packers (sometimes the Chicago Bears), and Jim Beam with soda and the “fur-bearing beast(s)” in his home.  He was an honest and loyal man who inspired loyalty in others, especially Darryl Wright and Jeff Swanson who have worked for him for over 20 years.

John leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Jean Anne, his daughters Eileen and Kate, his “favorite” nephew Tom Doyle, his dog Cooper, grand dogs Morgan and Thumper, and grand kitties Blossom and Hermes.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Michigan City Salvation Army or the Humane Society of your choice.

Visitation will be at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel at 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, Indiana on December 13, 2022, from 4-8 pm, and on December 14, 2022, from 11 am-1 pm.  John loved a good story, and the family would like nothing more than to hear your memories of him during visitation hours, in writing and/or on the tribute wall on the Ott/Haverstock website (www.otthaverstock.com).  The burial will be private.  There will be no service
