Clayton Jordan

Clayton Jordan, August 28, 1947-May 25, 2025.

Clayton Jordan 77, of Kingsford Heights, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home with his beloved dog by his side on May 25, 2025.

Born on August 28, 1947, to Chester and Kathryn Jordan in Huntington, TN, Clayton had no idea that his life would soon be filled with many achievements, awards, and devoted dedication to serving his country and community.

As a young boy, Clayton lived in Tennessee until he was 14. He then came to La Porte, IN., and this is when his legacy began. His love for basketball allowed him to become the first-ever black player to receive a scholarship for the Kesling Trailblazers. He would then play for Union Township school before it was consolidated with the La Porte High School system. Clayton is considered by many as LP Slicer's top defensive player of all time, scoring 35 points in a single game in 1966, the 7th-best performance in school history. From 1964-1966, his ability to score 1,054 career points made him the 6th on the list for all-time greatest players.

After graduating from high school, Clayton enlisted in the Marines and proudly served his country before being honorably discharged in 1973 with the title of Sergeant. Clayton then attended Davenport University and, upon graduation, started a career in law enforcement with the La Porte County Sheriff's Department. Clayton first started his law enforcement career as a photographer for crime scenes and later worked his way up the chain to jailer, patrolman, detective, jail commander, and sergeant. During his many years with the police department, he received many awards for his outstanding service and dedication. After retiring from the La Porte County Sheriff's Department, he continued working for law enforcement and became a process server until he fully retired in 2021.

Clayton, known by many as CJ, had a love for fishing, riding motorcycles, and helping those who had the honor of calling him their friend. He was also a consistent, loyal, and outstanding contributor to the accomplishments of the programs of the American Legion for over 40 years. He was very respected by many people & was well-deserved.

He leaves behind a family who cared and loved him very deeply, including his strong, beautiful, and amazing mother, Kathryn Jordan; daughter Cassandra Jordan; brother Dennis Jordan; sister Jacqueline Jordan; and grandchildren Joshua and Jerica Jordan; many nephews and nieces; and cherished friends. Clayton's legacy of dedication and commitment to serve his community will live on in the hearts of his family and those who had the honor of calling him their friend, ensuring that his memory will endure.

Jerry W. Howard

Jerry W Howard, September 12, 1950-May 20, 2025.

Jerry Wayne Howard, of La Porte, Indiana- a man whose strength was matched only by his heart- passed away peacefully at home, just as he wished, surrounded by his wife, Doreen, and daughters Arica and  Melissa.

Born on September 12, 1950, to Inez Jacobs Howard, Jerry was a man of grit, wit, and unwavering convictions. He lived a life defined by service, love and laughter. He proudly served his country in Vietnam 1967-1969, and carried his patriotism with quiet pride and unwavering loyalty. He didn't need to boast- his actions spoke for him.

In 1993, Jerry married the love of his life, Doreen Carlson, on September 11-that became a celebration of love, humor, and shared stubbornness. For over 35 years, they built a life filled with home improvements, welcoming hearts for their grandchildren, teasing jokes, heartfelt moments, and the kind of love that only grows stronger with time.

Jerry is survived by his adoring wife Doreen, who stood by his side through every challenge and joy, who somehow never changed the locks on him. He leaves behind his daughters Melissa Ann Szydlek (and late son-in-law Nick Szydlek, Jr.), Arica Kathleen Howard, and stepdaughter Rebecca LaRue, whom he raised as his own since toddlerhood.

He leaves behind his siblings Betty, Dottie, and Ronnie, along with nieces and nephews he considered his own- Rhonda, Kelly, Brittany, Cindy, Jaime, Wendy, Tom, Charley, and Mark. He is also survived by many in-laws whom he loved dearly: Carleen (Charles), Laureen (Danny), Keith (Clorissa), Scott, Brian (Trina), and Tonia (Scott)-as well as all of their children, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

Jerry is preceded in death by his mother, Inez; his dear sisters, MaryAnn and Sharlene; his son-in-law, Nick- a man he was proud to call family; his mother-in-law, Kathleen; his sister-in-law, Laureen; Grammy and George, and all others who went before him. We imagine they greeted him in heaven with a joyful, “Ready to party?”

He was a devoted grandfather-“PaPa”-to Leah Christine LaRue and Chance James Monroe Rogers, who will miss his playful requests for foot rubs (he paid $5 a foot), his warm hugs, gentle advice, and the quiet wisdom he always seemed to have on hand. He cherished them more than anything in the world.

Jerry loved his country, his family, music, old westerns, and catching up on the news. One of his favorite pastimes was sitting on the back porch and “firing one up,” a small comfort that helped ease his pain, and tinkering in his garage.

Jerry’s heart was generous, even in the face of hurt. He believed in grace, in second chances, and in choosing love over resentment. Even when met with disappointment or pain, he carried himself with quiet dignity. He held on to hope, believed in the goodness of people, and always left space for forgiveness-even when it wasn’t always returned. He never closed his heart.

He will be missed more than words can express, but his love will live on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him. Never forgotten, always loved, and fondly remembered-especially every time the oldies play on the radio.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN, where the family will receive friends Wednesday, May 28, from 5 pm until 7 pm. Funeral service will be held on Thursday at noon, with Chaplain Missy Buche officiating.  Interment will follow at the Pine Lake Cemetery.

Online condolences may be made at www.haverstockfuneralhome.com.

The bus departed Benny’s at 3 am, there was breakfast at the Antelope Club in Indy at 7, and a police escort to the track at 9. Recollections after the race tend to fade.
His numerous friends will recall the generosity and support he showed them over the years. He had a remarkable ability to purchase unique and meaningful gifts for those he cared about. These will be missed by his family and friends.

Frank John Cains

In Loving Memory of Frank Cains, September 16, 1935 – May 19, 2025.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Frank John Cains, 89, of La Porte, IN.

Born on September 16, 1935, in Kokomo, Indiana, to Frank and Evelyn (Cunningham) Cains, Frank John Cains graduated from La Porte High School in 1955 before honorably serving his country in Korea from July 1956 to April 1958.

Frank was a proud father of six children: Mike (Debbie) Cains, Marty Cains, Diane (Richard) Bush, Paul (Sue) Cains, Denise (Steve) Bealor, and Linda (Jim) Thompson, whom he shared with ex-spouse Mary Harrison. In 1974, Frank married Dolores Castle and became a loving stepfather to her four children: Beth (the late Frank) Browder, Rita (John) Ryder, Kelly (Don) Sheidel, and Gerry (Cindy) Castle. Frank was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dolores, his parents, sister Cheryl (whom he never missed a chance to lovingly tease), and his half-brother, Bob. He is survived by his half-brother Carl (Carla) Cains, cousin Rich Cains, his children and stepchildren, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

For over 30 years, Frank served as a postal carrier in Michigan City, Indiana, where he became a familiar and friendly face along his route.

At home, Frank was happiest with a project in front of him. He had a passion for woodworking and loved spending hours in the basement, sanding, sawing, and building things with his hands. Often pictured with a camera on his shoulder, he enjoyed capturing family gatherings, silly shenanigans, and practical jokes on film, leaving behind a library of treasured memories in motion.

Frank loved to laugh and to make others laugh, too. He was always ready with a quick comeback, a clever joke, or a perfectly timed one-liner. His comedic heroes were some of the greats, including Jerry Seinfeld, Johnny Carson, Rodney Dangerfield, Richard Pryor, and George Carlin. His love for comedy was also passed down to his children, who inherited his distinctive, room-filling laugh and his knack for finding humor in life's everyday moments. Family gatherings were often punctuated by waves of laughter that anyone would recognize as uniquely 'Cains.'

Frank also had a playful spirit, especially when it came to Rhonda and Kim, each of whom firmly believed she was his favorite, and maybe, in Frank's eyes, they both were.

He had a soft spot for animals, too. As a child, dogs captured his heart, but later in life, cats became his companions, often found relaxing in the sun while dad sat in the backyard.

A man of quiet strength and quick wit, Frank lived a full and meaningful life, marked by service, family, and humor. While he will be missed dearly by all who knew him, there is comfort in imagining the joyful reunion now taking place in heaven with his love, Dolores, mom and dad, Cheryl, Bob, and so many other beloved family and friends.

Visitation will be held from 11 AM to 1 PM on Friday, May 23, 2025, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana, with funeral services to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Frank's memory by sharing a laugh, telling a story, or spending time with someone you love.

Joseph was born August 18, 1952, to Joseph and Josephine Bachani in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Joe attended Bishop McCort High School and graduated in 1970. He obtained his associate's degree in specialized electronic and computer technology in 1972. He was an electrician and worked at Bethlehem Steel at Burns Harbor, Indiana. He happily retired after 47 years of service in 2019.

Shortly after he obtained his degree in 1972, he moved to Michigan City, Indiana. Joe went on to meet his beloved wife, Peggy Parsley, in 1977. They were married on September 21, 1979. They spent 46 years together and had two cherished daughters, Alexandrea and Melissa. Joseph was a devoted Catholic, completed all of the Sacraments, and often found serenity at church throughout his life. Joseph retired in 2019 and afterwards followed his dreams and moved to Arizona, where he regularly enjoyed many trips and adventures in the state and national park system, including Sedona Red Rock State Park, Zion, the Colorado River, Grand Canyon, Arches, the Smoky Mountains, and Canyonlands. He enjoyed hiking, biking, camping, and rafting. His most memorable hikes, which are both classified as “once in a lifetime,” were Angels Landing at Zion National Park and Phantom Ranch Hike at the Grand Canyon National Park. He was very passionate about all these experiences and loved to speak to his family and friends endlessly about them. He instilled a love for these adventures in his daughters as well. Joseph enjoyed photography and often was found taking pictures and videos of his adventures, the scenery, as well as all of his family's important moments throughout their lives. Joseph, in his spare time, loved watching and going to sports games, mostly everything Pittsburgh, including the Steelers, Pirates, and the Penguins, as well as Penn State. Joseph held many titles in his life, but his most cherished role was being a father. He was always there for them, whether it was helping prepare for school, cheering them on at sports competitions, taking us to our many endeavors, or just spending time throughout their lifetime into adulthood. Joseph’s kindness, generosity, and love for his family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

Joseph is survived and greatly missed by his loving wife Peggy and his two daughters Alexandrea (Steve) Burnett of New Carlisle, Indiana, and Melissa (Chris) Oberg of Indianapolis, Indiana; one brother Robert (MaryAlice) Bachani; one sister, Karen (Jim) Martin; and many cousins, niece, nephews and friends. Joseph is also survived by his most dearest dog, Australian shepherd Annie, who enjoyed hiking and walks just as much.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Josephine. There are no words that can express how grateful and blessed we are to the neighbors who were there for my mom the night of his passing. We would also like to send a heartfelt thank you to Clarkdale EMS and Police, specifically Officer Derek Johnston, for their compassion that night. Arrangements are being handled by Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood, Arizona. A private service will be held with immediate family, and cremation is taking place. Edward "Ed" Louis Zweibahmer

Edward “Ed” Louis Zweibahmer, 74, of Michigan City, Indiana, died suddenly Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at his home.

Ed was born Sept. 26, 1950, in Decorah, Iowa to Albert and Doris (Warthan) Zweibahmer. He grew up in Calmar, Iowa, and graduated from South Winneshiek High School. In 1969, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and was later honorably discharged.

On April 24, 1971, Ed married his wife of 54 years, Karen Kovarik, in Protivin, Iowa. They soon welcomed their daughter Donna.

Ed worked for the railroad for a short time before beginning his 45-year career as a heavy equipment operator. Many younger operators looked up to him in his years of service to the Local 150 International Union of Operating Engineers, of which he was a lifetime member. He was a legend in his profession.

While living outside of Protivin, Ed enjoyed pheasant opener with his dad, and taking Donna squirrel hunting and fishing to the trout stream or Lake Meyer. Each year, he’d host “The Dubuque Guys” for their annual deer hunting trip that always included lots of beers, stories, and laughs.

He loved the water. In their younger years, Ed and Karen were able to spend many winters oceanside in Florida and enjoyed trips to Copper Harbor, Michigan.

In 1999, Ed’s work took him and Karen to Michigan City on the shores of Lake Michigan, an ideal location to settle for a man who loved the water. Drives to the local marinas included the occasional dumpster dive, bringing home many treasures.

Nancy L. Mason

Nancy L Mason, October 8, 1937-May 1, 2025.

Nancy Mason, beloved mother and cherished friend, passed away on May 1, 2025, at St. Anthony's Majestic Care Center in Crown Point, Indiana. She was 87 years old. Born on October 8, 1937, in Rockford, Michigan, Nancy lived a life full of love, laughter, and memories that those fortunate enough to know her will forever cherish.

Nancy was the second oldest of nine children in the Funk family, blessed with a natural ability to connect with people. Her warmth and vivacity drew others in, and she delighted in sharing stories from her life, each tale a testament to her rich and textured experiences. She owned her own business, where she cleaned houses for local judges, demonstrating both her entrepreneurial spirit and her unwavering work ethic.

Her love for country music ran deep, rooted in her childhood experiences following her father, who played in a country music band. These early memories fueled her passion for the genre, which became a soundtrack to her life and a story she loved to share with those around her. Music was not just a pastime for Nancy; it was a language she spoke fluently, a connection she created with friends and family alike.

Nancy is lovingly remembered by her sons, Andrew Heiss, Daniel Heiss, and Steven Heiss, and her daughter, Mary. She is survived by her siblings, Gary (Cindy) Funk, Wendy (Owen) Stuerzinger, and Jean Toner, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward her spirit of generosity and storytelling. Though she faced the heart-wrenching loss of her daughter Suzie and the passing of her parents, Donald and Hattie Funk, as well as her brothers Donald and Rex, and her sister Patricia Horner, Nancy's heart remained open and full.

Her legacy of kindness, resilience, and love will continue to resonate within the hearts of her family and friends for generations to come. Nancy Mason's life was a beautiful tapestry woven from the threads of family, music, and community—a tapestry that will never fade but will rather grow richer as those who loved her recount her stories and celebrate her memory.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN. Interment of cremated remains will take place at a later time.

Suki Cho

Suki Cho passed away on April 19, 2025, at the age of 82 in Baraga, Michigan.

Born in Yonan, North Korea, she escaped to South Korea with her Christian family in 1951.  Separated from her parents and older brother shortly after escaping, she spent the Korean War orphaned on Gyodong Island, where, at eight years old, she lived with her four-year-old brother until her family was finally reunited three years later.

Suki received her education in South Korea and worked at the U.S. Air Force Base Library in Osan until immigrating to the United States in 1976, earning her American citizenship in 1980.  She was employed at the La Porte County Public Library for 23 years and was a member of the Speakers Bureau.  Suki also served as a Korean Language Interpreter for the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles. She was a Board Member of the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra and was granted lifetime Board Membership in the La Porte County Salvation Army. Additionally, she was a member of the La Porte Presbyterian Church.

In 2024, she moved to Baraga to live with her daughter and son-in-law. Her beloved Saint Bernard/Mastiff mix, Archie, was a constant companion throughout her time in Michigan, staying by her side until she passed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Chilson. Survivors include daughter, Michelle (Bryan) Krallman of Baraga; son, Joshua (Tobi) Mattingly of Chicago; nephews, Gyuhwan (Canada) and Junghwan (Germany); and niece, Jieun (South Korea).

Suki's only regret was never reconnecting with an American soldier she met during the war, who wanted to adopt her and her brother and often checked in on their well-being when they decided to stay on the island in hopes of reuniting with the rest of their family. She wished for him to know that she was okay, that she was safe, had moved to America, raised a family, and lived a wonderful life.
