Robert G Schultz

Robert G. “Big Bob” Schultz  -  November 19, 1954 - August 18, 2024.
Robert G. “Big Bob” Schultz 69, New Buffalo, Michigan passed away Sunday, August 18, 2024, while surrounded by his wife and family at Franciscan Health Hospital, Michigan City.  Born on November 19, 1954, in Michigan City, Indiana to parents Gerald Emil and M. Elaine (Bukowski) Schultz, who preceded him in death.  Bob was a graduate of Rogers High School in 1973. After graduation, he moved with his family to Charlotte, North Carolina, and started his business career as a traveling air compressor serviceman at Air, Inc., a subsidiary of Sullair Corporation, working with his father, Gerry Schultz, also a long-time Joy and Sullair compressor businessman from Michigan City. With Bob’s experience and mechanical background, in 1986 he started and owned a compressor parts business, Lake Wiley Supply in Lake Wylie, South Carolina.
In 1992, while visiting friends in Michigan City, Bob met the love of his life, long-time companion/wife of 32 years, Jan Rupsis Freier, (whose past family members of 3 generations were also in the air compressor business at the original Sullivan Machinery and Joy Manufacturing of Michigan City). Bob relocated back to Michigan City in 1995. He re-established his parts business and “mechanical knowledge
library” as part owner of Lefco CPS which he later acquired and became owner and president. Michigan City is known as “air compressor country” and “Big Bob” was known as the compressor parts “guru” all over the United States. Bob enjoyed his daily customer conversations….They would say, “With Bob’s past serviceman‘s experience and knowledge, he could talk to us on the phone, ask a few questions
about a specific issue or problem and he almost always knew what part was needed to fix the problem”. Bob would say, “We’ll air freight the parts overnight and it should fix your problem”…and it did! “We have truly lost a compressor parts ICON. He was like a walking/talking encyclopedia of compressor manuals or in today’s terms, he was the “AI” (artificial intelligence) of the parts business.” Big Bob’s personality, smile, and big heart were as large as he was, “the gentle giant” always
laughing and having a good time. He treated his employees with respect and generosity… always saying “my employees are the business, the employees are what helped make this business so successful”.
Bob and Jan enjoyed multiple vacations and travel to Hawaii. On February 20, 1999, they were married in Kauai. Earlier this year, they enjoyed a month-long vacation in Hawaii celebrating their 25th anniversary. At home, he enjoyed his outdoor activities, caring for an amazing colorful wall of potted plants, flowers, and vegetables along with his big green John Deere riding lawnmower.  He regularly attended and supported the Michigan City “Sullair Disconnect” get-togethers at Galveston’s in July and December. He was also an avid collector of air compressor memorabilia, which he proudly displayed in his office and his company hallways. Bob supported Michigan City high school “Air Academy” and girls golf programs. He was a supporter and member of the Michigan City Chamber of Commerce, Elks Lodge 432, and was a former member of the Michigan City yacht club.
Bob will be greatly missed by family, friends, employees, and the business  community. He is survived by his wife, Jan Schultz, New Buffalo, sister Susan  Vissing, Michigan City, brother James Schultz, Coral, Springs, Florida; nephew Blake Vissing (Stefanie), Michigan City; nieces Jill (Paul) O’Bbagy Schererville, Indiana, Jennifer (John) Cifaldi, Quincy, Illinois and Megan Rupsis, Grayslake, Illinois,  along with several great-nieces and great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to the charity or organization of your choice.
Please come celebrate in Big Bob’s honor, “A Celebration of Life” on
Saturday, September 28th, 2024, 3:00-7:00 pm, at the Michigan City
Senior Center, 2 Lakeshore Drive, Michigan City, Indiana 46360.

Elizabeth "Betty" Cowgill

Elizabeth "Betty" Cowgill

August 10, 1930 - August 19, 2014

Elizabeth "Betty" Cowgill passed on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy of strength and prayer.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Leon Cowgill; her daughters, Julie Crick and Cheryl Cowgill; granddaughter, Carissa Crick; her parents; and siblings.

Betty's surviving family members include sons, Howard C. Cowgill, Michael (Donna) Cowgill, and Kevin Cowgill; grandchildren, Jeff (Tracy) Cummins, Theresa Holmes, Tracy Johnson, Candace Lindsley, Kelly (Todd) Underwood, Sarah (Jeremy) Hughes, Erica Cowgill, Howard A. (Lindsey) Cowgill, and Gunnar Cowgill; along with many great-grandchildren; great, great-grandchildren; nieces; cousins; and more. Betty was born August 10, 1930, in Monon, Indiana.

She married Howard Leon Cowgill on August 12, 1950, in La Porte, Indiana. They were married until his passing in 1983, at the age of 53. Although it was short lived, Betty and Howard were a love affair to remember. Even through the loss, Betty continued on with her vibrant, feisty spirit, always loving her husband, but continuing to live life to the fullest.

She was active in church, spent time with her family, and kept the neighborhood on their toes watching from her front porch. She was commonly known in the area as Mama Betty to many, always willing to share a smile, a joke, a prayer, love, and a little sass.

Betty only loved one other more than her family, Jesus. She was the ultimate Prayer Warrior, spending hours a day praying over friends, family, church requests, her community and more. Her relationship with Jesus was strong and very personal. We take comfort knowing she is with Him now. Even at the end, unable to speak and limited in movement, she was able to make her wishes known. She left this world as she wished, nails painted, and dolled-up to see her husband.

Betty falls into the category of "they don't make them like that anymore". She will continue to be loved and missed.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at First Church of God with Pastor Jeff Zigler officiating.

Bailee Nicole Hoops

Bailee Nicole Hoops

November 18, 1993-August 9, 2024

Bailee Hoops, 30, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Friday August 9, 2024. She was born November 18, 1993 in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Jimmy Randall Hoops and Maria Lynn Smith.

Bailee was a lifelong resident of La Porte, Indiana. When she was young, she loved to act, sing the ABC's in "opera form", karaoke contests, riding her bike, playing softball and bowling, and if there was a chance for her to get in the water, she would- a trait her daughter enjoyably inherited. She also loved dolls and Barbies and all things Disney- especially The Little Mermaid (Ariel). She always loved to go shopping and would model her outfits as soon as she got home. You would often find Bailee baking and cooking with her mom or cleaning (which she loved and was SO good at). She loved making her famous pasta salad for all to enjoy. She always loved smiley faces, peace signs, rainbows, unicorns, sunshine, and the color yellow.

As she got older, she began to travel the unfortunate road of addiction. While her death may be unexpected, she suffered from the addiction for so long that it would have her family always wondering in fear if she was going to succumb to her addiction.

There's no way to encapsule her life in just a blurb. Although her adult life may have mostly been consumed by drugs, she was still a beautiful person who we wish could've seen what we all seen in her. There were still great moments in between the rough times that will always remain near and dear.

Above all, Bailee's humor, beauty, and silliness will remain at the forefront of our hearts forever.

She is survived by her parents; two daughters, Ellie Nicole and Heaven Rose; sister, Jordin Rose Hoops of La Porte, IN; her "cat nieces", Kisha and Misha; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Bailee was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Jesse Ray Hoops, Sr., paternal grandmother, Norma J. (Flory) Hoops, and brother, Damien Randall Hoops.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where family will receive friends for a memorial service on Saturday, August 24, 2024, with a gathering from 1:00 until service time at 2:00 p.m.

Thomas McComas

Thomas W. McComas

April 20, 1938 - August 8, 2024

Tom McComas, author and independent filmmaker, died on August 8 in Michigan City, Indiana. He was 86.

Tom was born on April 20, 1938 in Rocky River, Ohio to Elizabeth (McHugh) McComas and Cloral (Charles) McComas. Tom’s family moved from Ohio to Wilmette, Illinois when Tom was three, and when he was fifteen they moved to Lake Forest, Illinois. Tom attended Loyola High School but transferred in the beginning of his sophomore year to Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Maryland. Tom was a skilled athlete and played baseball and football in high school.

At Georgetown Prep, Tom’s record of kicking the longest field goal in the school’s history still remains unbroken. After graduation, Tom studied at Xavier University, in Cincinnati, Ohio and earned a Bachelors Degree in Business. The summer after graduation, Tom played Legion Baseball in Chicago. No matter what team Tom played on, he was always the shortstop and also a powerful line drive hitter. That summer

Tom was spotted by a Pittsburgh Pirates scout, and offered a contract to play on one of their farm teams, but Tom chose a different path and joined the United States Marines. Tom was proud of his military service, and believed those years in the Marine Corp taught him persistence, self-respect, and discipline - three qualities that were essential components of Tom’s approach to life.

Tom loved movies. After his honorable discharge from the Marines, Tom moved to Hollywood and worked for nine months at Desilu Productions as an assistant director. That was where he decided to become an independent filmmaker, and he moved back to Chicago and began working on “No Game Today,” his opus to the Chicago White Sox and a young boy’s dream of becoming a major league baseball player.

Tom’s film was a success at the Chicago Film Festival, and he began producing television commercials. Tom understood the wisdom of ‘find a need and fill it’, when one of his clients was short of funds and paid for a commercial with Lionel Trains. Tom played with trains as a boy, but had no idea what these trains were worth and couldn’t find any information on their value.

Then the idea took hold to do a book on Lionel Trains. He enlisted his good friend James Tuohy, a well-respected Chicago journalist, and the two of them formed TM Books & Video and began researching and writing what would become a six-volume set, A Collector’s Guide and History to Lionel Trains. They became respected authorities on Lionel Trains and went on to publish numerous price and rarity guides, and in 1987 they wrote the Great Toy Train Layouts of America book that featured Frank Sinatra’s layout among others. Tom’s love of filmmaking returned in 1988, when he made the video, Great Toy Train Layouts of America, and traveled across the country filming the layouts in the book. People Magazine reviewed this show and later selected it as one of the top 10 videos of the year.

During the next 36 years, Tom achieved his dream and became an independent filmmaker. Tom was an auteur, and TM Books & Video was licensed by Lionel Trains, John Deere, CAT, International Harvester, Ford Motor, and Boeing to make entertaining and informative special interest videos. Tom also created the popular children’s series I Love Toy Trains. For over two decades, Joseph Stachler was Tom’s creative partner, and they created outstanding work that was enjoyed by thousands. TM Books & Video was located on a farm surrounded by Indiana cornfields near the shores of Lake Michigan. Tom would laugh about his commute, which entailed walking from the house to his studio in a renovated barn. His rush hour consisted of seeing two squirrels and sometimes a rabbit. Tom loved model trains, baseball, the Chicago White Sox, the Great American Songbook, BMW motorcycles, movies, E.B. White, good writing, and his 1972 BMW 3.0 CS Coupe. Loyalty to his family, friends, and the beloved BMW Coupe were mainstays of his life. Tom was quick to laugh, passionate, persistent and his wit was legendary. In baseball terms, he always kept swinging for the fences.

Tom is survived by his wife, Charyl Lane (Havens) McComas; his former wife, Mary (Laney) McComas; his sons, Thomas William McComas, Jr., Christopher Mack (Michelle) McComas, and Jeffrey Charles McComas; stepson, John L. (Naz Sanders) Lane; his nephew, Marc (Eva) Devereux (great niece and nephew, Sophie and Oliver Devereux); sister-in-law, Kara Wetherby Schmidt; brother-in-law, Heimo Schmidt; and sister-in-law, Debra Havens (nieces, Sophia and Elisabeth).

Preceding him in death was his sister, Patricia (McComas) Devereux Tillinghast, passed away in 2020; and nephew, Patrick Devereux, passed away in 2023. In keeping with Tom’s wishes, burial will be private.

Condolences may be left at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel (otthaverstock.com) or the TM Books & Video Facebook site.

Sharon "Dianne" Fuller Cornett

Sharon "Dianne" Fuller Cornett

January 15, 1936 - July 18, 2024

Sharon "Dianne" Fuller Cornett, age 88, passed away at home on July 18, 2024.

She was born January 15, 1936 in Phenix City, Alabama, also at home. Dianne had a natural gift of singing and by age 13, had her own radio show which showcased her voice and her darling personality.

She would later attend Wesleyan College in Macon, GA to learn to hone and strengthen her vocal skills. Her voice and charm would do her great favors. She graced the stage at the Springer Opera House in Columbus, GA in roles in multiple plays, almost all being musicals.

Later, she would win Miss Columbus in the Miss America pageant and go on to win the talent portion of the Miss Georgia contest.

One of the cutest stories of Dianne was that when they brought her on stage for her Miss Columbus crown, the emcee asked "Well, Miss Fuller, what are your plans now?". And she said, in her sugaryish Georgia drawl "I'm go'ne marry John Cornett just as fast as I can!"

Dianne was a social person who would rather have a chat than $100. She was kind, gregarious, had a warm, inviting smile and did everything she could to make one 100% comfortable. She was filled to the brim with sweet Georgia peach.

And that peach crossed state lines when her husband John, who preceded her in death by 10 years, was promoted to new business opportunities.

When Dianne arrived in a new neighborhood, it wouldn't be long before she was making sweet tea and cobbler for the neighbors.

Dianne was a devout Christian. Her faith was tremendously special to her. She was highly involved in church activities, of which she always assigned the most to herself. Wherever she landed, she usually had a Bible study going on in her home. In fact, the Bible study she started in her home in around 1982 in Valparaiso is still going!

She is survived by her two children, Virginia "Ginny" and John (Mandi) Cornett; three grandchildren, Peterson "Peter", Thomas "Tom" and Margaret "Maggie" Cornett; and three great-grandchildren, Peterson"PJ", Isaac, and Jude Cornett; two brothers, William (Zella) Fuller and Michael (Brenda) Fuller; cousin, Sue Vining; and niece, Jennifer (McVay).

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.
