George Edward Lasky

George Edward Lasky, 80, of La Porte, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2020, at Porter Regional Hospital.

George was born in Little Falls, MN, on July 30, 1939, to Walter H. and Mary K. (Matis) Lasky.

On December 27, 1974, in La Porte, IN, he married Phyllis (Hunt) Wright who preceded him in death on March 10, 2019.  Surviving George are his 9 children, Robbie (Cindy) Lasky of Jacksonville, FL, Scott Lasky of TX, Shauna (Jack) Sandig of TX, Sheryl (Ricky) Turner of Nenana, AK, Teri (Rick) Strieter of Rolling Prairie, Su (Douglas) Glesner of La Porte, Toni (Fred Moryl) Lenard of La Porte, Richard "Rick" Wright of La Porte, and Dale (Karen) Wright of Orlando, FL; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; 1 great, great-grandchild; sister, JoAnne Thompson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and twin brother, Jerry Lasky.

George graduated from Gary Lew Wallace High School in Gary, IN.  After graduation, he became a store manager and served as same for nearly his entire working life.  He began at Kroger in Lansing, IL, and in the mid-'70s moved to La Porte, where he was the manager at 5-Star Grocery.  George was a member and regular attendee of St. Joseph Catholic Church, La Porte.

George had a passion for a variety of sports--as a participant and spectator.  In high school, he played football and basketball but it was his love for bowling that continued from his teen years to his mid-seventies.  George's bowling career included participating in numerous bowling tournaments throughout the country with teams made up of friends and family.  Shortly after retiring his bowling ball, he took to competitive horseshoes.  His bowling skills must have carried over because he helped carry his team to a first-place victory the past 2 years.

As a spectator, George and his friends could often be seen supporting our La Porte High School Slicers at football, baseball, and basketball games.  This love of sports carried over into professional and college teams as well.  George had a long tradition of attending Chicago Cubs games in person with friends and family, each season.  When not watching sports, he dedicated time supporting community events like building stage sets for La Porte Little Theatre plays or making and selling popcorn at their famous play "Bleacher Bums", while decked out in his Chicago Cubs garb and yelling "Popcorn here!".

Continuing to show an interest in sporting events, George frequently volunteered for the La Porte County Convention and Visitors Bureau, where he worked the Michigan City Grand Prix and bicycling tours as well as sponsored fishing tournaments on Lake Michigan, to name a few.

George greatly enjoyed the La Porte 4th of July celebrations, as it was a type of reunion for him with many friends and family.

George and his wife were no strangers to traveling and became known for their love for cruises.  They always planned at least a year in advance and were known for their spectacular cruise attire...they were always "decked out"...George even owned his own tuxedo!

On the more personal side, George's love could be seen by his dedication to providing care for his wife for many years prior to her passing in March 2019.  He was a wonderful husband and father.  George was definitely one of the best.

A time of visitation will be held from 4 - 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, 2020, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 9 - 9:45 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home before proceeding to Saint Joseph Catholic Church.
