After moving to Oxford, Ohio, to be nearer to her loved ones, she continued to devote herself to her grandchild and great-grandchildren, showering them with affection and sharing her life lessons and stories, including the adventures from her favorite trip to Israel with her first husband-a journey she passionately recounted. Wilma's culinary skills were admirable, especially her famed zucchini bread, which brought comfort to those who tasted it. Beyond cooking, her love for animals, particularly her cats, was evident. She filled her home with warmth and laughter, creating an inviting space where stories were shared, and memories were made.

Joseph Robert Schilla

Joseph Robert Schilla, February 10, 1960 - December 9, 2024.
Joseph Robert "Joe" Schilla, 64, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2024, at 8:24 a.m. in his home, leaving behind a lifetime of laughter, love, and good-natured mischief.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held on January 4, 2025, at 2:00 pm at The American Legion Skwiat Post 451, 121 Skwiat Legion Ave., Michigan City, IN. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN, is handling arrangements.
Born on February 10, 1960, in Michigan City, Joe had a knack for bringing a smile to everyone’s face, whether they liked it or not. On April 3, 2004, in Michigan City, he married Donna Marie (Sims), who survives him. Joe is survived by his children, Robert (Amy) Schilla of La Porte, IN; Travis Schilla of Chicago, IL; Candice (Brett) Antisdel of Michigan City, IN; Benjamin (Christopher) Berg of Merrillville, IN; Britney (Joe) Bruhler of La Porte, IN; and Mariah (Jeffrey) Coffman of Michigan City, IN.

His pride and joy were his eleven grandchildren: Aubrey Schilla, Jaxon Schilla, Lane Vega, Leah Walterhouse, Emma Walterhouse, Bryon Berg, Emily Silvas, Blake Silvas, Liam Coffman, Colton Coffman, and Noah  Coffman. He is also survived by his mother Jeanie Mae (Messina) Peterich, and sister, Christal (George) Bevitori of Michigan City, IN.
Joe was greeted in the great beyond by his dad, Robert Arthur Schilla, and many beloved family members, no doubt cracking jokes the moment he arrived.
A businessman in the construction industry, Joe spent his days building more than just structures - he built friendships and a legacy of humor. He loved his family, especially his grandkids, who could do no wrong in his eyes (even when they did). He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bird watching, and a good hearty breakfast with anyone willing to join him. Joe had a talent for turning a normal conversation into a roast. Whether you were family, friend, or someone he’d just met, you were fair game for his teasing. It was his way of showing love, and if Joe wasn’t giving you a hard time, it was probably because he was planning something even bigger. He never met a stranger he couldn’t befriend-or tease mercilessly - and he leaves behind a community of people who will forever smile at the thought of his antics. Joe lived his life with humor and heart. Though he’ll be greatly missed, his stories and legendary one-liners will live on, ensuring he’s never far from a good laugh.

Dorothy was a homemaker and caregiver.  Mom had a very big heart. She was loved by all the family that she had and she loved them all very much. They are what she lived for each and every day. Mom was very proud that she was the oldest and lifelong member of  Zion Gospel Chapel which is now known as the River of Life Missionary Church. My childhood was very blessed to have her as a mother as we did a lot of very fun things together. She loved all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  She was especially close to Lizzy her granddaughter. She would tell me how much fun they always had together.  I'm so glad she had her in her life.  Mom will rest in peace now and be at ease with life and will be missed by everyone's life she touched.  With all of our love; Vickie, Lynda, Lizzy, Nikki, Helen, Manny, and everyone she knew.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.  Mom loved watching all of the little children on the TV she would tell me about them all the time.

Donna Kay Garwood

Donna Kay Garwood, 85, of LaPorte, IN, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family.

Donna was born on January 21, 1939, in LaPorte, IN, to Charles and Henrietta (Martinsen) Whitmer.

On December 27, 1959, she married the love of her life, Carl Garwood, who survives. Also surviving are her children, Brian (Carey) Garwood, David (Dixie) Garwood, Michael (Tina) Garwood, all of LaPorte, and Diane (Cash) Allison of Florida; along with her grandchildren, Cody (Elaine) Allison, Cory (Tayler) Allison, Ryan Garwood, and Rachel (Jay) Garwood; great-grandchildren, Acen, Eila, and Ozzy Allison; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Donna also had an exceptional caregiver and friend in Sarah Chikwasha for the last several months.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Leah (Clifford) Halter; and brother, Henry (Betty) Whitmer.

Donna may have been best known for her two decades of real estate brokerage.  As one friend said, "Donna was a real estate icon." Owning the RE/MAX franchise and helping sellers and buyers make real estate dreams come true was a passion for Donna from 1987 into the 2000s. Not just for the sale, but truly to help people. She donated services to charitable organizations and knew this county's homes, farms, and properties better than many.

She dressed in style and worked nights, weekends, and many holidays. She was a success... but not just personally - she mentored and encouraged others and set a better standard for real estate agents throughout the area. She loved being a REALTOR, but there was more to what Donna was known for and a background that shaped that career.

Donna grew up on a farm in North Liberty, learning about hard work and a strong love for family. She was especially close with her brother, Hank.

She was strong, tenacious, and feisty! As a child, she broke her collar bone swinging on a church railing and fought off polio at a young age. In an era where few women went to college, she had parents who encouraged her to further her education at Purdue (as long as she never drank - which she would remind her family often... she never did). She had a love for creatures large and small from that farm life, which led to many beloved pets for future family.  And family... that was her crowning joy - her legacy.

Donna met her future husband, Carl, at Purdue, and was smitten. A new farm life was yet to unfold for her at Garwood Orchards. While she began the marriage as a Phys-Ed teacher, she of course helped in many ways at the Garwood farm.  Born in quick succession after marriage were Brian, Dave, Mike, and Diane. They were loved and raised by Donna and Carl with that same hard work, commitment, and strong family love that was instilled by the farm families who raised them.  Each of them - her pride and joy.  That is... until the grandchildren came.  Children, vacations, real estate, self...everything took a back seat to her grandchildren.

Her love for Cody, Cory, Ryan, and Rachel could be compared to that of any grandparent... and yet it was unique. As a grandmother, she had a special interest in who they were and who they would become. She encouraged them and loved all that they loved, without judgment or expectation. Like her children, Donna loved everyone who came into the lives of her grandchildren. Every person who ever mattered to a member of her family - mattered to her.

As a mother, grandmother, and REALTOR, Donna was always available. Her business cell message for years said she would "take calls until 9 p.m.". Perhaps that's why her last call was from God when she passed away at 9:01 p.m.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at noon on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Bethany Lutheran Church with Pastor Dennis Meyer officiating. Burial will follow at Carmel Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

Yet, nothing brought him more joy than being surrounded by his family.  Whether it was holidays, sporting events, birthday parties, cookouts, or trips to Chicago, if his grandchildren were there, Danny made sure he was there too.  Always up for a shopping trip or trying a new restaurant, he relished every moment spent with loved ones.  Danny took immense pride in providing for his family.  He was the first to step up to fix anything, always dependable and ready to lend a hand. Christmas, however, held an especially dear place in his heart. For Danny, it wasn’t about the presents - it was about sharing the day with those he loved most.

Daniel Keene will be remembered as a joyful soul who loved to laugh and celebrate life. His spirit and kindness have left an indelible impression on all who had the privilege to know him. His legacy will live on through the memories he created and the love he shared with his family and friends.

Robert John Behler, Jr.

Robert John Behler, Jr., June 15, 1940 - December 4, 2024.
Robert John Behler Jr. (84), former Mayor of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his residence in Encinitas, California, on December 4, 2024, surrounded by his family. Bob passed away following a valiant four-year battle with Stage 4 prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones. His journey with this illness was marked by resilience, humor, and love, with much of his time lived joyfully and fully. His devoted wife of 55 years, Janice, honored her promise to keep him at home, taking on the role of primary caregiver with unwavering strength, patience, and love. Even in his final months, Bob’s humor and
spirit shone brightly, as he rallied to enjoy life’s moments, including a round of golf just two months before his passing.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Robert John Behler and Irene Kniola Behler.

He is survived by his wife, Janice (Haack) Behler; his daughters, Gwynne Behler and Beth Behler; his only grandchild, Charlotte
Behler; and his sisters, Barbara Duncan, Sally Czubik (Bob), and
Anamarie Fedder (Jeff); as well as Janice’s siblings Kathleen Hartley, David Haack (June), Char Johnson (Jim), and Diane Kalogridis (George).  Bob is also lovingly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  His family’s hearts are heavy as they navigate this profound loss.  Bob lived a life so full, that it felt like he had lived ten lives in one.
Born and raised in Michigan City, Indiana, Bob attended St. Mary’s Grade School and High School (now Marquette HS), where he graduated in 1958 as a National Merit Scholar and celebrated athlete, holding the single-game basketball scoring record. At 18, Bob enlisted in the United States Marine Corps while walking home from his last day of high school.  His mother was astonished when he announced he was passing up a
full-ride scholarship to Tulane University to enlist.  Later in life, Bob earned an associate’s degree from Vincennes University and was proud to be honored as the inaugural recipient of St. Mary’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
His 26-year military career began with four years of active duty,
including tours in Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Italy, and Guantanamo Bay. He continued his service for 22 years in the Indiana Army National Guard.  In 1994, Bob was named La Porte County’s first “Veteran of the Year.”  During his military service, Bob earned over 40 honors, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army and Indiana Commendation Awards, and the Joint Military Achievement Award.  In 2000, upon retiring as
First Sergeant, Bob was honored by the governor with Indiana's highest military award, the Distinguished Service Medal, as well as the state's highest civilian award, the “Sagamore of the Wabash,” in recognition of his exceptional service to Indiana.
An adventurer at heart, Bob was also an avid race car driver in his young adult life. He competed in Formula Vee and Alfa Romeo road races across the Midwest, eventually earning a starting spot in the prestigious 1968 American Road Race of Champions in Riverside, California.  Janice served as his pit crew during this exciting chapter of their lives.
Bob’s contributions to Michigan City were profound.  Bob began his career as a successful businessman, owning Behler Floorcovering, before dedicating himself to public service. He served 12 years on the Michigan City Common Council, followed by two terms as Mayor (1988-1995). During his tenure, he championed numerous transformative initiatives, such as
the creation of the Watershed Management Plan (recognized by the EPA), the Trail Creek Improvement Plan, the opening of Franklin Square, the riverboat evaluation process, the 4th of July Patriotic Program, and the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza.  Bob never considered himself a politician but rather a devoted public servant who truly cherished his role as Mayor of Michigan City.
Bob served as president or member of numerous boards, commissions, and organizations, including the Northern Indiana Regional Planning Commission, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway Commission, and the Northern Indiana Mayor’s Roundtable. He was also involved with community and service organizations such as the American Legion Post 451, American
Legion Post 0416 (Encinitas, CA), the Chamber of Commerce, St. Joseph Young Men’s Society, the Exchange Club, Moose Lodge 980, and the Fraternal Order of Police Dunes Lodge 75. Additionally, Bob contributed to the Michigan City Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Advisory Board of the Great Lakes Museum of Military History, and the St. Mary’s Parish Pastoral Council.
After serving as mayor, Bob took on diverse roles, including
coordinating military security for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, working as a sales manager and on-air personality at WEFM radio, and serving as County Treasurer and County Clerk. A man who wore many hats, Bob approached each role with unwavering dedication and purpose.  A talented artist, writer, and storyteller, Bob’s creativity was a hidden gem to many who knew him. Throughout his life, he was particularly inspired by the legend of King Arthur, Camelot, and the Knights of the Round Table. His family remembers him as a loving husband, a devoted father, and a grandfather who taught by example, a fun and adventurous “kid at heart,” and a kind, witty man with a knack for
building or fixing anything in unconventional yet efficient ways-earning him the nickname “MacGyver.”
Bob spent his retirement years in Encinitas, California, where he and Janice relocated in 2008 to be near their only grandchild. At the end of the day, Bob took the greatest pride in his family, his beloved hometown on Lake Michigan, his military and public service, his Chicago Cubs, his Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and his golf scores.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Bob’s oncologist, Dr. Anjali Bharne, and her staff, and the compassionate team at The Elizabeth Hospice, whose exceptional care and kindness brought comfort and dignity to Bob in his final years.
A Mass celebrating Bob’s life will be held in early spring at St. Mary’s of the Immaculate Conception Church in Michigan City, followed by the interment of his ashes with full military honors at Greenwood Cemetery.
Bringing Bob home to Michigan City is a heartfelt tribute to the life he lived and the roots he cherished.  Bob Behler was a man of integrity, humor, and adventure, whose legacy lives on in his family, his stories, his community, and the countless lives he inspired and touched.
Memorial contributions may be sent to The Behler Family in the care of Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN 46360.
