Julius Bauer

November 3rd, 1933 - March 27th, 2024,

Julius was born November 3rd, 1933, in South Bend, Indiana, the son of John and Helen (Masszi) Bauer.

He graduated Class of 1952 from Central High School in South Bend. He served in the Air Force from 1952 – 1960. He retired from U.S. Steel in Gary. After retiring from the Mill, he and his wife opened and operated J.I.B. Lawn and Cleaning Services.

On April 13th, 1957, Julius married Ilona (Kadi) Bauer, who preceded him in death on December 12th, 2014. Julius is survived by a son, Thomas (Lynsae) Bauer; a daughter, Mary (Greg) Bucy; four grandsons; seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, John Bauer, and a great-grandson.

John Harold Knoll was born on January 26th, 1947, to the late Harold and Betty (Merchant) Knoll in LaPorte, IN. He passed away on Tuesday, March 26 after a long illness. 

A proud resident of LaPorte, John attended St. Peter Catholic School, and LaPorte High School, and then returned to the area after attending Ball State University where he received his teaching and business degrees. John began his career as a teacher at St. Stanislaus Catholic School in Michigan City, then teaching at Wheeler Jr. / Sr. High School, where he advanced to the role of assistant principal.

On June 7th, 1969, John married Susan Fulton of Angola. The couple lived in Porter County and taught at Wheeler together until they moved to LaPorte in 1980 to run the family businesses, Harold Knoll & Son Contracting and Knoll Pool Supplies. John continued to be actively involved in the community through his parish, St. Peter Catholic Church, and with organizations such as the Jaycees, Rotary Club, LaPorte County Homebuilders Association, Habitat for Humanity, and the LaPorte County Draft Horse Club. 

John was a loving father to daughters Michelle (Kevin) Fessel of Depauw, IN, and Stephanie (Michael) Griesinger of Carver, MN, and grandfather to Brody, Bryce, Abigail, Jacob, and Alexandra, who survive. 

In addition to his wife of nearly 55 years, John is also survived by his sister Nancy (Richard) Ransom of Kent, OH, and sisters-in-law Marty Burns, Bobbie (Marty) Gilbert, Pat Fulton, Joanne McKeag, Connie (Jim) Crowl, Lori (Tom) Sanborn, Jeannie DeMato, and Stacy (George) Gilbert of the Angola, IN area. He is also survived by 65 nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his grandson, Benjamin Fessel, his nephew, Jeff Ransom, his niece, Christine Ransom, his mother and father-in-law, and brothers-in-law Al Burns and Richard DeMato. 

Visitation for family and friends will be held Monday, April 1st, 2024, from 4-8 pm at Haverstock Funeral Home 406 Maple Ave. La Porte, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church on Tuesday, April 2nd at 11:00 am with Father Gordan Kalil presiding. Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte, IN.

Therese Kaye Young, 81, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on March 25th, 2024, at Brickyard Health-La Porte Care Center.

Therese was born in Moline IL on October 10th, 1942, to Arthur and Isabel (Chapman) Folk.

Surviving are her 2 daughters, Jennifer (Ronald) Downs of La Porte and Anita (Ken) Rosentreter of Mill Creek; grandchildren, Wade Downs, Layden Scheidel, Ken Rosentreter, Bradly Rosentreter, and Niya Miller; 6 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Frances (Donald) Estep of La Porte and Mary (David) Medich of Granger; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, William Harold Miller; and roommate, Gabriel Camarillo.

In 1961, Therese graduated from New Carlisle High School. She then attended the University of Washington in Seattle.  Therese sold Avon and worked at Teledyne and The Lighthouse Place.  She loved to sell Avon and socialize at the local bar.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

A time of visitation will be held from 3 p.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.  Cremation will take place following the service.

David George Potter, son of George and Elsie (Bailey) Potter, was born in Orange, New Jersey, on October 14th, 1948, and departed this life on March 24th, 2024, at the age of 75.

He is survived by his two children, Ariane (TK) Durham of Springhill, Tennessee, and Joel (Becca) Potter of Norwich, Kansas; four grandchildren, Zane Durham, Sela, Emeth, and Jotham Potter; his sister, Sallie (Ray) Anderson; his nephews and niece, Michael (Michelle) Potter, Matthew (Shannon) Lewis, Ryan (Jackie) Anderson, and Lexie (Casey) Frazier; and two great-nephews, Jeffrey and Lucas Potter.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jeff (Mary) Potter.

Dave graduated from Livingston High School in 1966.  He was a talented pole vaulter and track athlete, as well as an excellent student.  He also enjoyed playing the banjo.  Dave and Lori (Staup) started their life together in 1973 and were married for 18 years.  In 1976, he graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma; after which he worked on airplanes at La Porte Municipal Airport throughout his lifetime.  After obtaining his pilot's license, even before his driver's license, Dave enjoyed years of flying and taking trips. He began work at Aero Metals as a mechanic in 1990 and retired in 2015 after 25 years.

Dave spent most of his adult life in La Porte, Indiana where he had valuable friendships at Falcons, and throughout the La Porte community.  He loved his children and grandchildren and was very proud of all of them.  You are welcome to join us as we take time to remember Dave and his life from 5 - 7 pm Wednesday, April 3rd, 2024, at the PRCU-620 Bach Street, La Porte, IN (21 and older).

Richard Matthew Cerajewski entered the gates of heaven at 11:02 a.m. on Friday, March 22nd, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.  Born on Sept. 12th, 1947, in Chicago, IL, he was adopted by Chester and Albina Cerajewski. Rich was the loving husband of 51 years to his wife Patricia (Toft) Cerajewski.  He was the proud father of Lindsay (Jimmy) Adams, Shannon (Joe) Walker, Courtney (Chris) Parthun, and Scott (Meagan) Cerajewski.  He was the adoring grandpa to Eva Walker and Cole Parthun, two of his very best friends.  He and his loving sister, Diane (Bob) Treski relied on each other.  They were blessed with incredible aunts, uncles, cousins, and neighbors who were guardian angels throughout their lives.

From an early age, Polka music became Rich's passion and purpose.  As Rich would say, "Polka music is happy music."  Known as "Sudsy," he played piano, accordion, concertina, and drums in several bands including "The Musical Aires."  He went on to play with Grammy Award and International Polka Hall of Fame-winning musician Eddie Blazoncyck and the Versatones as a studio pianist for 25 years.  He won several awards including the 1963 International Polka Association/Polka World's Fair Contest for best band, "The Musical Aires."  He was also named the United Polka Association's 1993 Piano Player of the Year.

Rich proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966-68.  When he returned home, his cousin, a pilot for American Airlines, urged him to apply for a job there.  It was at American Airlines (O'Hare/ORD - Chicago) where he began a decades-long career and met some of the most pivotal people in his life including his wife, Patti, and best friend, Dan Betlej. Starting as a "ramp rat" on the airport tarmac, Rich worked his way up the ranks.  He worked in almost every position at American Airlines except pilot or air traffic control. He eventually became known as the "Mayor of O'Hare."  Rich treasured his American Airlines family.  He remained close with colleagues across the country, enjoying regular breakfasts, reunions, and daily communication.

Rich grew up on the south side of Chicago and was the ultimate Chicago White Sox fan. He ensured his four children would be lifelong Sox fans.  When they were younger, he would take them to the old Comiskey Park where they would kiss the bricks for good luck before home games.  His dream came true when the 2005 Chicago White Sox won the World Series.

He lived in Chicago, IL until the family moved to their summer home in Fish Lake, IN in 1994. Fish Lake held a special place in Rich's heart from an early age.  His dad and uncles built the family cottage on the lake during the post-World War II era.  Rich recalled his time at the lake as some of the best moments of his childhood.  He was elated to create new memories at Fish Lake with his own family.  Retirement life on the lake was a dream come true for Rich.  Each day, he looked out at his beautiful view, calling Fish Lake, "a little slice of heaven."

Rich's family was his proudest accomplishment and his top priority.  Friends and neighbors became extended members of his close-knit family.  He was a loving and fiercely loyal friend.  He taught his children and grandchildren to be honest, hard-working, and live life with integrity.

Rich was predeceased by his parents; his beloved Uncle Al and Aunt Madeline Cerajewski; and childhood neighbors who became like parents, Phil and Viola Jarvis.

A Celebration of Life and Honor Guard ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, at First Church of God, 2020 E. William K Wampler, 91, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, March 20th, 2024, at Miller's Health and Rehab in La Porte.
 
He was born November 2nd, 1932, in Michigan City to Russell and Mildred (Watkins) Wampler and lived in La Porte and Crown Point, IN. He married Phyllis (Pam) Millbern in Kokomo on December 19th, 1954, who preceded him in death on May 18th, 2017. 
 
Bill was the owner of several businesses throughout his life. For 25 years he was a distributor of Phillips 66 petroleum products. In 1978 he founded Perf-A-Lawn of Michana a lawn care company for LaPorte, Porter, & St. Joseph counties. In 1984 he bought McLauglin Golf and Ball Co. in Crown Point which manufactured golf balls for several of the leading sporting goods companies. He then founded Illiana Grinding and Machine, Inc. in Merrillville and subsequently sold that business to the employees. He began a career in commercial real estate that spanned 16 years. Bill served as an air traffic controller for the United States Air Force in Tacoma, WA. where they used the first computer to communicate with others. By using the computer to communicate they were able to guide the President's plane in for a safe landing.
 
Bill was a past Exalted Ruler of the La Porte Elks B.P.O.E. #396, a Director on the Board of the La Porte Bank & Trust, a member of the Jaycees of which he organized the initial popular US Air Force flyover to start the 4th of July Parade. He served on the first La Porte County Park Board. Bill graduated from La Porte High School in 1951 and graduated from Indiana University in 1955 with a BS in Business and was a Delta Upsilon Fraternity member. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, playing bridge, and flying his Cessna 182. Bill was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and also the La Porte Hospital Patient Advocate Program. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of La Porte for many years. 
 
William was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
 
Surviving are his children Teri (Robert) Singer of Ponte Verdra, FL; Marcia (Clyde) Brodhacker of La Porte; and David (Sheila) Wampler of Conifer, CO; along with eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and special Jane Stephani.

Sandra Kay McDaniel (Peterson), passed away at her residence on March 23rd, 2024, surrounded by family.  She was born in Lansing, Michigan on December 20th, 1941, to Frederick A. and Mary Bernice Balderson. Sandy graduated from DeWitt High School in DeWitt, Michigan in 1960. 
 
Sandy lovingly provided childcare for many years in Rolling Prairie and later worked in the Housekeeping Department at LaPorte Hospital from which she retired in 2007.  She was a dedicated member of the Rolling Prairie Methodist Church and later the La Porte New Church. Sandy was known for her loving and nurturing personality. She found joy in tending to her garden, delving into books as an avid reader, and spending hours engrossed in her Bible. Her skills as an excellent seamstress were matched only by her prowess in the kitchen - she was renowned for cooking and baking.

Sandy will be dearly missed by her surviving family and friends, including her son Shawn (Kim Younglund) McDaniel of Mustang, OK,  daughter Sue Krentz of LaPorte, IN, son Jason (Amy) McDaniel of Michigan City, IN, and her grandchildren Kathleen, Ellen & Bridget McDaniel, Rachel & Jacob Krentz, and Mira & Christian McDaniel.

She is preceded in death by her parents Frederick A. and Mary “Bernice”, her step-mother, Arlene (Lietzke) Balderson, and the father of her children, Spencer McDaniel.

During this time of mourning and reflection on a life well-lived, let us remember Sandy for the love she shared with those around her and the light she brought into the lives of many. May she rest in peace knowing she was cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Special thanks to her daughter Sue for taking such good care of her in her final months and Heart to Heart Hospice for their immense kindness and care.

Dorothy M. Trojan, 93, Michigan City, IN, passed away Friday, March 22nd, 2024, at 11:19 pm in her home.

She was born April 28th, 1930, in Michigan City, IN to the late Edward and Anna (Knoll) Foldenauer. On August 5th, 1950, in Michigan City, IN she married Edward Trojan who preceded her on August 9th, 2007.

Surviving are a daughter, Lynne (Radoica) Rutovic of Knox, IN; two sons, Edward J. Trojan and James (Juli) Trojan both of La Porte, IN; seven grandchildren, Derek (Shalane) Rutovic of Houston, TX, Natalie (Kris) Wiebe of Alberta, Canada, Katie (Daniel) Bostick of Indianapolis, IN, Michael Trojan of La Porte, IN, Matthew (Karly) Trojan of Indianapolis, IN, Kim Trojan of Indianapolis, IN and Kristine Trojan of Indianapolis, IN; and seven great-grandchildren, Ruthie, Caleb, Nolan, Kiersten, Elise, Olivia and Clara.

She was also preceded in death by her son, John S. Trojan; two sisters, Clara Kieszkowski and Ruth Pliske; and eight brothers, Leonard, William, Raymond, Carl, Elmer, Edward, Robert, and Joseph Foldenauer.

Dorothy had worked as a bakery and deli clerk at various area grocery stores. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Michigan City, IN.

Eva (Trotsky) Pierzakowski passed away peacefully at her home on March 20th, 2024.

She was born in Parchevichi Bevezovichi, Poland, on June 5th, 1926. Eva was a beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.

She is preceded in death by her husband Joseph Pierzakowski, her parents Roman and Pelageya Trotsky, and two brothers Adam and John Trotsky. Eva is survived by her sister, Maria Johnson, and her children Geneva Nudd, Bruno (Barbara) Pierzakowski, John (Pam) Pierzakowski, Don Pierzakowski, and Mike (Lisa) Pierzakowski.  Also surviving are ten grandchildren who brought light into her life as well as ten great-grandchildren in whom her legacy will live on.  She was a source of strength for them throughout their lives.

Eva's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, kindness, and devotion to her family. She emigrated to the United States in 1951 and settled in La Porte in 1964. Eva found solace and purpose as a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist church, where she dedicated many years to volunteering before the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Eva's green thumb was evident to all who knew her; she found joy in tending to her garden and nurturing a variety of fruits such as raspberries and strawberries. Her passion for gardening not only bloomed flowers but also cultivated a sense of tranquility and beauty around her.

Eva Pierzakowski's life was a testament to resilience, faith, and unwavering love for her family. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her memory be a source of comfort and inspiration during this time of sorrow.

Rest in peace, dear Eva. Your love will continue to bloom in our hearts forever.

Terry Lynn Shelton, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and loyal friend, passed away on March 17th, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter. Born on April 1, 1959, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Terry’s life was a testament to hard work, compassion, and unwavering devotion to his family and community.

After graduating from Doyle High School, Terry proudly served in the United States Army as a Military Policeman. While serving in Germany he met the love of his life, his beautiful wife, Julie (Blackard) Shelton. Their love story was one of devotion and admiration, spanning over 40 years of shared laughter, tears, and countless cherished memories.

Throughout his career, Terry found joy and fulfillment in construction, particularly working with concrete. His skillful hands and dedication to his craft left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of witnessing his work. Later in his career, Terry joined Burns Harbor Cleveland Cliffs, where he formed wonderful friendships and made significant contributions to the community.

Beyond his professional life, Terry’s true legacy lies in the profound impact he had on those around him. He possessed a heart of gold, always ready to help anyone. His caring nature, his love of telling a story, and his genuine kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Terry was preceded in death by his son, Joshua Thomas Shelton, his grandparents, Ed and Lucille Leffew, grandmother Lynn Hicks, and uncle Edward Leffew, his mother Mary Katherine Shelton, and his brother Tommy Shelton.

Terry is survived by his best friend and devoted wife of 40 years, Julie Shelton, and his heartbroken daughters, Tracy and Lindsey Shelton, as well as his cherished bonus daughter, Tonya Newton. He also leaves behind his adoring grandchildren, Max, Lucy, Sebastian, and Anka, who brought him immeasurable joy and whose lives he enriched with his love, wisdom, and kindness.

Terry will be deeply missed but forever remembered for the love he shared, the lives he touched, and the laughter he brought into the world. He will also be remembered for his love and dedication to his favorite game, Candy Crush Saga. Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph Church, 109 C. Street. La Porte, Indiana.

Cathy M. Putz, 71, La Porte, Indiana, passed away Monday, March 18th, 2024, at 6:31 pm in her home.

Private family services will be conducted. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

She was born March 17th, 1953, in Michigan City, IN to the late Clarence and Joan (Bednarz) Putz. She married Nicholas Rebac who preceded her in death on August 25, 2022.

Surviving are her brother, Richard (Terry) Putz of Saint John, IN; two step-sons, Brian (Stacey) Rebac and Brett Rebac both of Michigan City, IN; niece, Rene (Chuck Gullett) Putz of Chicago, IL; and her nephew, Ryan Putz of Woodlands, TX.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jerome Putz.

Cathy had worked as a bookkeeper, and also the caregiver for her father, mother, and husband. She enjoyed pool time with many friends and most especially being a loving aunt to her nephew and niece whom she spent much time together.

Fayrene L. Brigance, 76, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, March 17th, 2024, at 8:46 a.m. in VNA Hospice Center, Valparaiso, Indiana.

A private family celebration of her life will be held. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

She was born on July 27th, 1947, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The daughter of James and Zelda (Calhoon) Wilson.

Surviving are three daughters, Juli (Meg Goodman) Swartzlander of Winfield, Illinois, Cyndi Swartzlander of Michigan City, and Jessica Bryan of Michigan City, Indiana; four grandchildren, Marcus Swartzlander, Alex Swartzlander, Jada Dabney, and Vasilis Bryan; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Belinda Renegar of Washington; step-mother, Ann Wilson of Arizona; step-brother, Doug (Sybille) Schlarbaum of Arizona; two dear friends, Maggie Bradley and Karen Darnell; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; James Wilson and Zelda Candaele; two sisters, Anna Serquinia and Betty Jo Chrastil; and step-brother, Dennis Schlarbaum.

Fayrene was a golfer, bowler, and homemaker, enjoyed running her own cleaning business, and loved her clients. She also worked in Quality Control for Winn Machine. In addition, she enjoyed gardening and small crafts. Fayrene’s most favorite job was being a mom and grandmother.

William "Bill" Walter Schultz, 62, of LaPorte, IN, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 16th, 2024, at Northwest Health, LaPorte, after a highly successful battle and courageous campaign against cancer over the last eight years. Bill continually baffled nurses, doctors, and specialists with various anomalies they had never seen before and persevered through ALL of them with dignity and grace.

William was born on November 23rd, 1961, in Michigan City, IN, to William and Arlene (Orzech) Schultz.

On October 15th, 1994, in Michigan City, IN, he married the love of his life and unwavering care magistrate, Darla Garbacik, who survives. Also surviving are his adored children, Kristen (TJ) Reed of Noblesville, IN, Jenna (Chris) Austin of Noblesville, IN, Braylyn Schultz and Brock Schultz of LaPorte, IN; grandchildren, Scarlett and Vincent Reed, Graham and Jack Austin; sister, Rebecca (Clifford) Sheeler; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Not to be left out, his beloved golden retriever daughters, LuLu and Daisy Mae.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Arlene Schultz; infant daughter, Stephanie Schultz; and parents-in-law, Daniel and Kay Garbacik.

He graduated from Elston High School in 1980. Bill received his bachelor's degree from Indiana Wesleyan University. He was a Financial Analyst at Sullair Corporation for 29 years and worked 16 years as a Plant Controller and Costing Manager for UGN, Inc.

Bill was competitive and enjoyed sports, including golfing with Caddy Shackers Golf League and bowling with the Civic League for numerous years alongside lifelong friends. He also played recreational softball for many years. Bill most loved watching all of his children excel in their respective sports throughout their school years. He enjoyed playing cards and games with family and friends, as well as casino games of chance. Bill faithfully cherished his beloved White Sox, the Bears, and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Although never formally trained, he was a Grill Master and Mixologist extraordinaire!

Bill was an exceptional father, husband, friend, and man; his absence will be deeply felt.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, IN.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at noon on Friday, March 22nd, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.

Steven J. Kraus, 67, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Saturday, March 16th, 2024, at his home in La Porte, IN. with his wife by his side.

He was born September 13th, 1956, in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Ernie Kraus and Lora (Orcutt) Kraus.

Steve loved to go fishing and go to the park with his dog Joey. Steve retired from New York Blowers after many years of service.  

Steve is survived by his wife Anita, his children Julie (Matt) Hopkins; son Josh Kraus; 2 grandchildren Kristopher and Corinna Hopkins; 2 sisters, Christina (James) Caudill and Nikki (Shawn) Bush; brother Roger Kraus; as well as many uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews; also his beloved dog Joey. 

Steve was preceded in death by his father Ernie, and two brothers.

Barbara Ann Fort, 83, of Union Mills, passed away on Sunday, March 17th, 2024, at her home, surrounded by her family.

Barbara was born in Campbell, MO, on May 10, 1940, to Norman "Clyde" and Katherine (Propes) Cooper.

She is survived by her husband, Russell W. She retired from Rexam in 2006 after more than 30 years of service to the company. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as well as visiting with other family members. She loved doing word find puzzle books and reading. Barbara and Russell were married in, and spent all 65 years of their life together, attending the Assembly of God Church in Kingsford Heights.

Richard Earl Smith, known affectionately as Dick to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 16th, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois. Born on November 27th, 1941, in Rushville, Indiana, Dick's journey through life was marked by his intelligence, faith, and passionate spirit.

Dick graduated from Rushville High School and furthered his education at the Wilmington Delaware Art Institute, which set the stage for his successful career. He retired from the Whirlpool Corporation after 30 years of dedicated service, where he made his mark as a talented graphic design artist. His creativity and keen eye for design were not just his profession but also his calling.

Beyond his professional life, Dick was deeply involved in his community and church. He was a valued member of the La Porte JayCees, where he contributed to numerous community service initiatives. His commitment to his faith was evident in his long-standing involvement with the Bethany Lutheran Church choir, where he sang with devotion for 40 years. Richard also led a Promise Keepers group at Bethany Church, inspiring many through his leadership and unwavering faith.

Dick's artistic talents were not confined to his work. He was an accomplished artist whose passion for art was contagious. He found great joy in teaching his artistic techniques to his grandchildren, leaving behind a legacy of creativity and a love for the arts. He shared his talent etching monuments for Kovenz Memorials in La Porte. His interests were diverse; he was the lead singer in a contemporary band, an avid downhill skier, and a sailing enthusiast who owned several sailboats over the years.

Family was the cornerstone of Dick's life. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 46 years, Ann (Pentis) Smith. Their partnership was a testament to enduring love and mutual support. He was a cherished father to his daughter, Beth (Pat) Mahoney, and his son, Scott (Kristen) Smith. His grandchildren, Dilynn, Liam, and Quinn Mahoney, and Eden and Shepherd Smith, will miss their grandfather's guidance, but his influence will continue to shape their lives. Richard's sisters, Sandy Rogers and Dinah Thalheimer, along with Troy (Elaine) Smith and family, will remember him as a beacon of light in their lives.

Preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Kathryn (Bever) Smith, his daughter Dawn Smith, and his special aunt and uncle, Helen and Harold Hardin, Richard's memory will be a comfort to those who knew him.

Richard Earl Smith's life was one of purpose and joy. His intelligence was matched by his faith-filled heart, and his passion was evident in every aspect of his life. He touched many lives with his artistry, his voice, and his dedication to his family and community. Dick's legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will be treasured forever.

As we bid farewell to Dick, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of accomplishments, love, and unwavering faith. His story does not end here but continues in the lives of those he loved and the many he inspired. Rest in peace, Richard Earl Smith, a man of many talents and an even greater heart.

Edward Anthony Ryba, 85, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, March 16th, 2024, at Northwest Health La Porte

Edward was born in Hammond, IN, on December 6th, 1938, to Chester and Sophie (Adamczyk) Ryba.

Surviving Edward are his 2 sons, Greg (Kathy) Ryba of Glen Ellyn, IL, and Mark (Maria) Ryba of Schererville; 6 grandchildren, Zachary, Ryan, Jacob, Mitchell, Alex, and Andrea; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sophie Ryba and Chester Ryba; brother, Mike Ryba; sister, Alice Cornell; and brother-in-law, Joe Cornell.

Edward proudly served in the United States Navy.

He worked as an electrical technician for many years. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and competitive team sports.

Harold was born on May 26th, 1947, in LaPorte, Indiana to Harold Allen Bennitt Sr. and Helen M. (Martensen) Bennitt.

He passed away on November 14th, 2023, in Palm Bay Florida at home with his daughter, Michele, and son-in-law Dan, by his side.

Harold graduated from Rolling Prairie High School in 1966. Where he played football for four years. After graduating high school, he attended Sam’s Technical Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana. There he majored in drafting, graduating in 1968. He joined local 172 Plumbers and Pipefitters. While living in LaPorte he worked for Dye Mechanical and ran Comfort Control. He was Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge in LaPorte. He was also a member of the LaPorte Yacht Club.

After retiring Harold moved to Palm Bay, Florida where he enjoyed playing golf. He was so proud when he got his Chef’s license. He really loved to BBQ. He worked as an outside Chef at his friend’s restaurant. He enjoyed flipping his burgers and his specialty was Prime Rib. For breakfast, he made a mean eggs benedict.

Harold is survived by his daughter, Michele (Dan) Troche, and sister Judy (the late Ron) Harenza. Nieces Dana Ehrich and Tara Harenza. Nephews Darrin Eigenmann and John Harenza.

Harold is preceded in death by both parents, Harold and Helen. Sister Thelma Eigenmann and both sets of grandparents.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 23rd, 2024, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.

Lorena M. Ritter, 85, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Thursday, March 14th, 2024, at Brickyard Healthcare- Fountainview Terrace in La Porte, IN.

She was born August 12th, 1938 in La Porte, Indiana. Her parents were Floyd E. Scott and Maxine (Kirkham) Scott, both of whom preceded her in death.

A lifelong resident of the area, Lorena was a graduate of La Porte High School, class of 1957. On August 3rd, 1957, she married George Ritter, who passed away in 2002. A homemaker, Lorena was a past member of the Pine Lake Grange. She loved crafts like knitting, crocheting, quilting, sewing and decoupage. Lorena was an avid reader and a huge Elvis fan who finally got to see him in concert. More recently, she enjoyed traveling with senior bus groups and belonged to a card club with lifelong friends.

Lorena is survived by her two sons, George (Kim) Ritter Jr. of La Porte, IN, Gary Ritter of La Porte, IN; daughter, Gayle (Pete) Hill of Crowley, TX; four grandchildren, Erik (Michelle) Ritter, Andrea (Brent) Samford, Andrew (Talitha) Hill, Courtney Hill; five great-grandchildren, Talon Samford, Rhys Ritter, Emily Ritter, Emma Hill and Landyn Hill;

Lisa Renee Darcusio, 58, of La Porte, Indiana, formerly of New Jersey, passed away Monday, March 11th, 2024 at Community Hospital Munster, IN. 

She was born March 23rd, 1965 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the daughter of Ruth (Garrison) Slocum.

Lisa lived in La Porte for the past 3 years. Her faith and love for God were strong, never doubting that His plan guided her life and brought her through many difficult times. Lisa lived and loved with great strength and spirit. As a child, she learned to craft and make jewelry while on long stays in the hospital due to a lifelong illness. She mastered those skills along with becoming an expert cake decorator. She enjoyed giving gifts and used her talents throughout her life to bless her friends and family with offerings that showcased her artistic flair. Lisa was also known for her cooking and loved when folks gathered to eat and celebrate. Lisa was happiest with animals. She studied to be a vet tech and raised many dogs over the years, calling all of them her “babies.” She is survived by her last three, Tiana, Adonis, and Moana. She dreamed of opening a rescue farm with her sister. With love and kindness, Lisa took care of both of her grandmothers in their golden years, knowing that this was part of God's plan. She was loved and cherished by many and will be greatly missed by all whose lives she touched.

Shurla Richardson was born in La Porte, Indiana on September 19th, 1936, to Charles and Helen (Surowiec) Smith. She was the second born of four siblings whom she fondly adored and often talked about. They kept busy being creative, playing outside, and helping the family as much as possible.

Shurla worked at the local dime store, Kresge’s. One evening in high school, she went to the La Porte Roller Rink to “watch the roller skaters do their tricks''. Shurla couldn’t keep her eyes off this one guy out on the floor, ‘rexing, dipping, and spinning’ to electronic organ music. Just the same, she caught his eye. He asked her to couple’s skate, she laughed and told him he would have to hold her up the whole time, and the rest is history. 

Gerald and Shurla Richardson married on June 6, 1954, and went on to have four boys, Bruce (Laura) Richardson, Brad (Dawn) Richardson, Byron (Dana) Richardson, and Brian (Jackie) Richardson. Shurla often reminisced of these times when the boys would play sports, Jerry would film everything, and she would take care of the home and domestically provide for her family. It gave her a sense of purpose, and everything made sense. 

When the first grandchild, Kelly (Norah) Richardson was born she said that began, “…the best years of my life.” Her grandchildren thus followed: Nolan (Lana), Dahlia, Malone Richardson, Christopher (Callie Bolster) Richardson, Lindsay Richardson, Kyle (Mila) Richardson, Mallorie (Brian), Rylee, Maddox Knapp, and Brock (Ashley), Harper Smith.

Shurla thrived when she was with her grandkids. They went camping all over in their camper, rode bicycles, took breaks in corn field sprinklers, made homemade play dough, shot pool, swam and ate snacks outdoors in the summer, listened to music, played dress-up, cuddled and laughed at her witty jokes, went shopping or just hung out to talk, but most of all, they all got to feel a love that was so magical and so special that only Grandma Shurla could give.

Shurla never spoke of her resilience and perseverance, how she is a breast cancer survivor, or how her pregnancies were a miracle. She never liked to be the center of attention or to be fussed over. She was a listener, kind and generous, poised with dignity, and had a sense of humor that would seemingly come from nowhere. Her comedic timing was perfect. 

However, her life began to change after her Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis in 2013, and she began to slow down physically and spend more time at home. The disease is not instantaneous, there is no cure. It’s “patiently waiting to maybe get worse” or “impatiently waiting to maybe be better.” Yet, Shurla seemed to stay ahead of the emotional toll of the disease.

She continued to serve lunch at noon for all her boys, would watch the great-grandkids whenever she could, and still had her daily talks with her brother on the telephone. Yet in 2020, Gerald’s health abruptly declined, and he passed away peacefully with Shurla by his side. His death took a part of her heart that could never be replaced.

The sorrow and strain these last four years have taken on Shurla have shown just how strong she was, even to the end. Parkinson’s Disease not only takes away the simplicity of daily functioning, but also mentally deteriorates those who suffer. The woman who once took care of everyone else ended up relying on everyone else to take care of her.

The support of her boys, daughters-in-law, grandkids, and Kim Rose, her niece, whom she fondly called the daughter she never had, to the end showed how beautiful life had come full circle. She felt comfort in her familiar surroundings, knew who she could be stubborn with and couldn’t, and could still throw in some quick wit here and there. In the last few days, Shurla was surrounded by those who meant the world to her and whose lives she impacted so greatly. She was beautiful, angelic, and finally, at peace.

On Friday, March 8th after an 11-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease, Shurla Richardson, 87, of La Porte, Indiana comfortably passed away in her home. She has taken Jerry’s hand, joined him on the rink and can now roller skate alongside her forever. “Love you, more” 

She is survived by her sons/spouses; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Cheech Lawson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; siblings, Elenor Levandowski, and Michael Smith; and great-grandson, Lennox Richardson.

Mary Ruth Laymon, 97, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on Monday, March 11th, 2024, at Avalon Springs Health Campus

Mary was born in Plymouth, IN, on October 25th, 1926, to Alfred and Gertrude (Poor) Dolohery.

On November 4th, 1949, in La Porte, IN, she married Robert Laymon, who preceded her in death. Surviving Mary are her children, Robert (Carrie) Laymon, Patrick (Carla) Laymon, John (Anne) Laymon, Catherine Messman, and Steve (Beth) Shank; grandchildren, Sarah (Howard) Schenck, Robert (Allison) Clark, Abigail (Jonathon) Stickford, Darcey Laymon, Kyle Anne Laymon, and Jeffery (Tiffany) Shank; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Evan and Grace Anne Nelson and Matilda and August Stickford; sister, Joan Kammler; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son-in-law, Richard Messman; sisters, Margaret Hamilton, Patricia Thate, and Sharon Conley; and brother, Alfred Dolohery.  

Mary was a bookkeeper for 25 years at Russell's Clothing Store. She was a member of PhiWives.   Mary was a voracious reader, who loved to travel and visit with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She will be fondly remembered for her delicious Italian beef and Christmas cookies.

Robert C. Scott, 79, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Sunday, March 10th, 2024, at Northwest Health-La Porte.

He was born June 26th, 1944, in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Charles Scott and Kathleen (Heisler) Scott.

Robert spent much of his life in La Porte, working for 35 years at Berkel as a Machinist, then moving to Columbus, Ohio for 15 years to work as a foreman at Eagle Crest, where he retired. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Crisis. On October 8th, 1977, in La Porte, Robert married the love of his life, Carol Delonis, and together they raised their three daughters.  He took the family camping every year and taught them his favorite things, like fishing and riding motorcycles, boating, and water skiing. Robert enjoyed cruising on his golf cart, and had a wonderful vegetable garden, growing a tomato as large as a dinner plate. Robert was a member of the PRCU, the PNA, the American Legion Post 83 in La Porte, and the VFW Post 4044 in Columbus. His family and friends were his life, and every year he would throw a big fish fry and cook out and invite everyone. He never met a stranger that didn't become a friend and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of over 46 years, Carol, his three daughters, Debbie Whickcar of Valparaiso, IN, Dawn "Sissy" (Brian) Blackman of La Porte, IN, Diane (John) Lambert of Dublin, OH; brother, Larry (Patricia) Scott of La Porte, IN; four grandchildren, Cory (Diane) Whickcar, Addison Lambert, Amelia Lambert, Ainsley Lambert and great-grandchild, Chase Whickcar.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Norma Jean Grinstead; son, Bobby Scott and grandchildren, Christopher Whickcar and Adeline Lambert.

Nicholas Thomas Bubalo, 82, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on March 10th, 2024, at Southlake Methodist Hospital.

Nicholas was born on December 19, 1941, in Chicago, IL, to Rudolph and Katherine (Popovich) Bubalo.

On February 27th, 1971, in Chicago, IL, he married Loreen Wagner, who survives. Also surviving are his 3 children, Rosie Michiaels of New Carlisle, Michael Bubalo of La Porte, and Karla (Joe) Buda of La Porte; 8 grandchildren, Allie (Derick) Nesvold, Taylor Martin, Nick Shei, Samantha Shei, Savannah (Eddie) Gehrmann, MacKenzie Bubalo, Luke Bubalo, and Julien Bubalo; 5 great-grandchildren, Wynton, Rohen, Cooper, Aria, and Caroline. 2 sisters, Millie Cueller and Dorothy Blazek; 2 brothers, Steve (Lucile) Bubalo and Mike Bubalo; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Kaitlynn Shei; daughter-in-law, Amber Bubalo; son-in-law, Brent Martin; and nephew, Nick Bubalo.

Nicholas was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps.  He was honorably discharged in 1966 as a Corporal.

He was a member of the American Legion 295, VFW, 48/8, and DAV.  Nicholas enjoyed working on cars, attending auctions, cooking, and, most importantly, spending time with his grandchildren.  He loved collecting and antiquing.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15th, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Jeff Zigler officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Door Village Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.

William Floyd Garner, age 97 of Hanna, IN passed away Wednesday, March 6th, 2024, at Northwest Health, LaPorte Hospital following an illness.

He was born on March 18th, 1926, in Gibsonburg, OH to Donald and Ellen (Frankfather) Garner and was 97 years old at the time of his death. He moved to the area as a young boy and lived here most of his life.

Bill graduated from Hanna High School in 1944, after which he immediately joined the Marines where he served in World War II.

On September 14, 1946, in Rolling Prairie, he married the love of his life, Doris Ellen Selby, sharing 77 years of marriage.

After the war, Bill continued his community service in a huge way. He served on the Hanna Volunteer Fire Dept. and Hanna Lions Club both for 77 years; was a member of the Hanna Cemetery Board, Hanna United Methodist Church, the South Central School Board, Gleaner Life Insurance, and Gleaner Arbor of Hanna; served as Justice of the Peace for Hanna Township; was the Chairman of the Illuminarie Jugs for Christmas Eve in Hanna; built and ran the Hanna KOA Campground from 1965 until around 1975; owned and operated his own construction business for 33 years; was a participant in the honorary flight for World War II Veterans to Washington D.C.; and in 2009 was named Gleaner Fraternalist of the year.

Before his death, he went to Indianapolis on February 26, 2024, and met Governor Holcomb where he was honored for 77 years of service on the Hanna Volunteer Fire Dept.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife Doris Garner of Hanna; five children Lois (Dave) Boyd of Sulphur, OK, Diana (Robert) Bailey of Union Mills, Terry (Elisa) Garner of South Bend, Deborah (Robert) Clark of Wanatah, and Pam (Jim) Glasgow of Union Mills; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and one sister Sharon Warner of Florida.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister Vera Grace; three brothers Merle, Ray, and Allen; one daughter-in-law Susie Garner; and one grandson Clint Bailey.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 PM CDT on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at the Hanna United Methodist Church (101 W. Hopper ST., Hanna, IN 46340). Private burial will take place in Hanna Cemetery.

Jesse Leonard Bair, 73, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on March 5th, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Jesse was born on November 24th, 1950, in Lafayette, IN, to Jess and Evelyn (Reed) Bair.

On March 3rd, 1973, in La Porte, IN, he married Vicki Lewis, who survives.  Also surviving are his son, Jacob Scott Bair of La Porte; brother, John Robert Bair of La Porte; sister-in-law, Teresa Bair of La Porte; sister, Ruth Anne Campbell of La Porte; brother-in-law, Charles Lee Campbell of La Porte; 2 nieces, Carrie Ann Hendricks and Amanda Christine Beaudoin, both of La Porte; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and niece, Katie Marie Dolan.

A lifelong musician, he played drums and sang in numerous bands.  An Elvis fanatic, he also jammed The Eagles and Pink Floyd.  He was a huge Bears, Bulls, and Cubs fan...Bear Down.  Jesse was a semi-truck driver and enjoyed muscle cars.  He loved to play cards with friends and hit the casino.  Jesse had endless jokes to tell as he "never met a stranger".

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 2 - 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 17th, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  Cremation will follow the gathering.

Beloved former Mayor of LaPorte, Elmo Gonzalez, passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on Friday, March 8th, 2024, in the comfort of his home in Arlington Heights, Illinois. His adored wife, Paula, and children at his side.

Born on June 26th, 1925, in Fort Worth, Texas, Elmo grew up with a sense of duty and honor that would define his life. As a little boy, he worked tirelessly helping his grandparents with their tailoring business, found odd jobs in the neighborhood, and performed in a trio at fairs and nightclubs displaying his charming personality. He would give all of his earnings from his endeavors to his mama, Ophelia, to help support him and his little brother Jackie.

The bombing of Pearl Harbor inspired Elmo to drop out of high school and bravely enlist in the Navy. He served his country during World War II as a radioman aboard the USS Bunker Hill aircraft carrier. He demonstrated immense courage and resilience when his ship was struck by two kamikaze pilots in the Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W.

After returning home, he headed north to Indiana where he worked in the steel mills. The roots of his political aspirations sprouted as he rallied behind local candidates who wanted to improve working conditions and championed for the underdogs of society.

Elmo then went on to become an extraordinary salesman. He sold vacuums door to door before moving on to retail at the Montgomery Ward department store.

He was the manager and eventual owner of Alan Furniture Mart in Michigan City, Indiana, and ES Kesslers in LaPorte, Indiana. He enjoyed many years of meeting the families within the community that would come to his stores.

Throughout this time, he loved to coach baseball, he volunteered in many organizations and clubs, and he became the President of the New Buffalo School Board. He had an obvious passion for making a difference and touched the lives of countless individuals. Elmo was a selfless public servant who wanted to help people. He radiated positivity, showing kindness and compassion to all who knew him.

Elmo served as two-time Mayor of LaPorte from 1988-1996. He noted his biggest accomplishments as starting the citywide recycling program and bringing the government to the people. He began Saturday morning open-door hours, where the public was encouraged to come to see him and share their concerns.

Always an entertainer, Elmo delighted his fans when he would sing and dance. His famous and energetic renditions of “La Bamba” and “Fly Me to the Moon” will always be remembered.

At the young age of eighty-five, he retired as the Director of Customer Service from the Indiana Department of Transportation. He moved to Illinois to enjoy his family, always spending time with his dog Lulu and watching the Chicago Cubs.

Beyond his career and public service contributions, Elmo cherished every moment spent with his beloved wife, children, grandchildren, and extended family. His love and guidance will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind, serving as an example of strength and inspiration in their lives. Elmo was preceded in death by his mother Ophelia (Ruiz) Avila, brother Espiridion “Jack” Gonzalez, and children Vanessa Kavanaugh and Elmo Gonzalez. He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Paula (Zolkowski) Gonzalez, his daughters Lorelei (Jon) Ihasz, Holly (Bob) Lockley, Kami Tharp, Dee Dee Mascarenas, Melissa (Shawn) Donaldson, Cindi (Al) Walus, and Laura (Adam) Gonzalez-Escoto. His sons, Erik (Linda) Gonzalez, Edward Gonzalez, and Stephen (Nancy) Gonzalez, Twenty-six grandchildren, Ashland, Beckett, Greyson, Lachlan, Erin, Ethan, Kai, Kassidy, Cole, Laiken, Gage, Dashel, Gabe, Merrill, Katie, Elizabeth, Rio, Camille, Marissa, Gabrielle, Amy, Brian, Eric, Paige, Jade, and Stefan, Twenty-two great-grandchildren, Shelby, Samantha, Isabel, Emiliano, Dylan, Maddox, Archie, Mae, Jenna, Jordan, Kealan, Tristan, Juni, Lincoln, Addison, Brianna, ShongQuan, Brian Jr., Bianca, Layla, Julian, and Mila, and seven great-great grandchildren, Leonardo, Birdie, Nailea, Darrien, Angela, Aliana, and Javon.

Carol (Allen) Vitale, a cherished matriarch and beloved member of the La Porte community, passed away peacefully on March 7th, 2024, at the age of 93. Born on August 11th, 1930, in La Porte, Carol lived a full life characterized by love, kindness, and a passion for her family and friends.

Carol was the loving wife of the late Daniel Vitale Sr., whom she married on June 21st, 1946. Their enduring partnership was a testament to their shared values and commitment until Daniel's passing on October 18th, 1999. Together, they raised a family that would be Carol's greatest pride and joy. She is survived by her devoted children, Alice Compton, Pam McCarty, Tamara Joe (Mark) Frame, Jeana Kane, and Bob (Liz) Vitale. Carol was a guiding light in the lives of her several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry her legacy forward with fond memories and lessons learned from her wisdom. Carol was preceded in death by her mother, Martha Allen, her children Marsha Lamb, Dan Vitale, and Jim Vitale, and her four sisters. Despite these losses,

Carol's strength and love never wavered, and she continued to be the cornerstone of her family. For 42 years, Carol dedicated her professional life to American Rubber, where she was not only a committed employee but also a friend to many. Her work ethic and positive attitude left a lasting impression on her colleagues and contributed to the company's warm and collaborative environment. Outside of work, Carol's interests brought joy to both her and those around her. She played dice every Tuesday, a tradition that was much more about laughter and camaraderie than the game itself. Carol was also an exceptional cook, known for her chicken and noodles and spaghetti and meatballs, dishes that became synonymous with comfort and love in the Vitale household. Her culinary skills were just one of the many ways she expressed her love for her entire family, which she absolutely adored.

As we remember Carol, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and generosity. She was a beacon of love and kindness, touching the lives of all who knew her. Her spirit will continue to inspire those she leaves behind, and her memory will be cherished forever. Visitation for Carol will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Thursday, March 14th, 2024, at Frank L. Edwarda Juszkiewicz, 86, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Thursday, March 7th, 2024.

Edwarda was born in Stary S?cz, Poland on August 17th, 1937, to the late Roman and Zofia (Ci?ciel) Majka.

On July 17th, 1955, Edwarda married Jozef Juszkiewicz who preceded her in death on March 3rd, 2004. Edwarda was a homemaker.

Edwarda is survived by her daughter Maria (Tom) Otolski of La Porte, Indiana; three sons, Mitch (Linda) Juszkiewicz of La Porte, Indiana, Ted (Kay) Juszkiewicz of Mill Creek, Indiana, and Wes (Monica) Juszkiewicz of La Porte, Indiana; nine grandchildren, Noah, Zofia, Anna, Ryan (Jennifer), Michelle (Christopher), Tony, Josh, Nicholas (Sierra), and Christopher; great-grandchildren, Gideon, Jozef, Mitch, Amelia, Zella, K’senia, Wes, and Wiesiu; a sister, Michelle (Zenon) Resiak; and a brother, Kazimierz Majka.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jozef; a sister, Krystyna Paterka; and two brothers, Tadeusz Majka and Lesaw Majka.

Delbert Joseph Allen, known affectionately as Delbert to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2024, at his home in Hanna, Indiana surrounded by his family. 

Born on January 2nd, 1951, in La Porte, Indiana, Delbert was a beacon of kindness and courage throughout his 73 years of life. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who left a lasting impact on the hearts of those he touched.

Delbert was born to the late Joseph and Annie (Webb) Allen. He graduated from South Central High School in 1969, and his passion for learning led him to Ball State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in education in 1973. Delbert's commitment to education was not just academic; it was a lifelong pursuit that he shared generously with others.

On August 2nd, 1975, Delbert married the love of his life, Deborah (Hardin) Allen. Their union was blessed with three sons: Derek J. (Megan) Allen of Union Mills, Indiana, Darren J. (Naoka) Allen of Highland Park, Illinois, and Daniel J. (Jessica) Allen of Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Delbert was a devoted husband and father who instilled in his sons the values of integrity, hard work, and compassion.

His legacy lives on through them and his beloved grandchildren, Evan, Caitlin, Lui, Desmond, and Malcolm, who will forever cherish the memories and lessons he imparted. Delbert's siblings, Lois Proud of Niles, Michigan, Janice (David) Warner of Michigan, and Melvin (Patricia) Allen of Florida, will remember him as a supportive and loving brother.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Swanson, but his memory will continue to be honored by his many nieces and nephews, who looked up to him as a role model and confidant.

Professionally, Delbert dedicated 35 years of service to NIPSCO, where he was known for his reliability and strong work ethic. He retired with the respect and admiration of his colleagues, having made a significant contribution to the company and the community it served.

Delbert's commitment to his faith was evident in his active membership at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah, Indiana, where he participated in various church activities and formed lasting friendships.

As we say goodbye to Delbert Joseph Allen, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life filled with love, service, and unwavering faith. He will be deeply missed, but the memories he created will continue to bring joy and solace to all who were fortunate enough to know him. Delbert's spirit will live on in the stories told, the lessons learned, and the love he shared. May he rest in peace, knowing that his legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come.

Walter (Bucky) M. Hines, known affectionately as Bucky to his friends and family, passed away on March 6th, 2024, at the age of 62.

Born on November 8th, 1961, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, Bucky was a man whose zest for life and boundless creativity left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He departed this world in the peaceful surroundings of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and innovation.

Bucky was preceded in death by his parents, Walter M. and Florence M. (DuBois) Hines.

He is survived by his loving brothers, Robert Hines (married to Barbara) and Thomas Hines (married to Marcia); his sisters, LuAnn Smith (married to Robert Smith) and Catherine Halter (married to Jeffrey Halter); as well as his adored nephews, Adam Hines (married to Megan), Jim Schwingendorf (married to Amanda), Mark Halter (married to Jessica), and David Halter; and his cherished nieces, Allison Haley and Lauren Hines (married to JD Huff).

A proud graduate of Holy Rosary Elementary School and Marist High School in Chicago, Bucky's academic journey culminated in a degree in Industrial Design from Lewis University. His educational background laid the foundation for a remarkable career. Bucky's tenure as a Senior Structural Designer at Outform, (formerly Rapid Displays) in Chicago since 1988 was marked by numerous awards and national recognition, a testament to his exceptional talent and dedication to his craft. Beyond his professional achievements,

Bucky was a passionate member of the U.S. Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association. His love for the skies was most evident when he was soaring above Saugany Lake, his favorite place and the backdrop for many of his adventures. Bucky's love for life was infectious, and he had an uncanny ability to touch the lives of many with his adventurous spirit, innovative mind, and humor. The tales of Bucky's creations at Saugany Lake are legendary. His imaginative spirit knew no bounds, from water slides to steam-powered popcorn machines, remote-controlled alligators to life-sized cannons, hamster bubbles to remote hot air balloons. Each new invention was a source of excitement and curiosity, leaving friends and family in awe and anticipation of what he would dream up next. Bucky was the embodiment of a modern-day Peter Pan, a man who never lost the joy and wonder of childhood. Those who knew Bucky would describe him as adventurous, funny, and intelligent. His ability to see the world through a lens of endless possibilities made him a beacon of inspiration. His humor was a gift that he shared generously, bringing smiles and laughter to even the most ordinary of days. His intelligence was not just in his ability to design and create but in the way he understood and cared for those around him. As we say goodbye to Walter (Bucky) M. Hines, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, a life filled with adventure, laughter, and love. Bucky's story does not end here; it carries on in the legacy he leaves behind—a legacy that will continue to inspire and delight for generations to come.

Marilyn Jeannine Dunham, 94, passed away on Tuesday, March 5th, 2024.

Marilyn was born on February 13th, 1930, in Harper, IA, to Lawrence and Marjorie (Besser) Striegel.

On July 25th, 1954, in Gary, IN, she married Fredrick Dunham, who preceded her in death.

Surviving Marilyn are her 3 children, Dale (Derwin) Ratzlaff of Colorado Springs, CO, Christine (Bill) Facciponti of Nazareth, PA,  and Brian (Jamie) Dunham of La Porte; 14 grandchildren, Nikki, Hannah, Ellis and Ivy Dunham, Britney and Bobbi Dunham, Shane, Toni, Freddy, and Theo Facciponti, Dillon and Shelby Ratzlaff, and Angelina and Matt (Betsy) Dunham; 10 great-grandchildren, Orson, Blair, Norah, Josh, Lilliana, Ethan, Aowyn, Jace, Evvy, and Lydia; brother, Lawrence Striegel of Scottsdale, AZ; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Eric and Robert Dunham; and sister, Carol Fara.

In addition to being a homemaker, Marilyn was an executive secretary. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, Service League of La Porte, and Questers Preservation.  Marilyn was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, actively involved in teaching Sunday School, serving on the Altar Guild, ECW, and more.

Marilyn was an avid walker, often logging over 3 miles a day.  She loved to do needlepoint, crochet afghans, and was a skilled bridge player, baker, and seamstress. 

Marilyn will be fondly remembered as the "hostess with the mostest" and for setting the most beautiful tables.  She had a knack for shopping and always found the exact item to keep herself and her home dressed to the nines.

She exemplified and ultimately, through her example, gifted her children with the values of hard work, responsibility, and dutifulness.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 11th, 2023, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1000 Michigan Ave., La Porte.  Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects from 10 - 11 a.m. on Monday at the church.

Linda L. Kuchik, 80, Noblesville, IN, formerly of Michigan City, IN, passed away Tuesday, February 27th, 2024, at 8:55 am in Prairie Lakes Health Campus, Noblesville, IN.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. (EST) on Friday, March 8th, 2024, at the Prairie Lakes Health Campus, 9730 Prairie Lakes Blvd. E., Noblesville, IN 46060. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.    

She was born March 26th, 1943, in Plymouth, IN to the late Chester and Beulah (Keltz) Jones. On August 22nd, 1961, in La Porte, IN she married Robert Kuchik who preceded her on February 8th, 2012.

Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca (Matthew) Porter of Noblesville, IN; four grandchildren, Sarah (Lance) Irwin, Luke (Sarah) Porter, David and Ashley; four great-grandchildren, Porter Irwin, Nora Irwin, Malcolm Porter and Minnie Porter; and her brother, Donald Jones of Valparaiso, IN.

David R. Fischbacher, 77, La Porte, Indiana, passed away Monday, March 4th, 2024, at 3:30 am in the Life Care Center of Michigan City.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, March 8th, 2024, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN with Pastor Kim Cole officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 am - 11:00 am, Friday at the funeral chapel. 

He was born February 23rd, 1947, in Michigan City, IN to the late William and Chrystal (Majot) Fischbacher. On July 4th, 1980, in Michigan City, IN he married Joyce Baines who survives in La Porte, IN.

Also surviving are a daughter, Lisa (David) Hunter of Burbank, CA; son, William (Melody) Fischbacher, II of Des Moines, IA; five grandchildren; sister, Jean Ann Doyle of Michigan City, IN; and brother, Jack (Sharron) Fischbacher of Indianapolis, IN.

He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, John Doyle.  

David was a retired mechanical engineer having worked at Gateway Industries, Midwest Metal Products, and MCTD. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of Vietnam and enjoyed photography, computers, and NASCAR.

Elizabeth Mullins, 68, of Kingsford Heights, Indiana, a beacon of warmth and love in the lives of all who knew her, passed away Saturday, March 2nd, 2024, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN.

She was born May 13th, 1955, in Tecumseh, Michigan, the daughter of Seldon Armstrong and Martha (Fletcher) Armstrong.

On September 18th, 1971, in La Porte, Elizabeth married John Mullins, who preceded her in death on March 21st, 2021. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Mullins, and her sister, Brenda Armstrong.

Elizabeth is survived by her four daughters, Vonda Mullins of Detroit, MI, Joyce (Jason Dudeck) Mullins of La Porte, IN, Kandye Mullins of La Porte, IN, Crystal Mullins of Kingsford Heights, IN; six brothers, Steve Armstrong of Kingsford Heights, IN, Jerry Armstrong of Kingsford Heights, IN, Clyde Armstrong of Mill Creek, IN, Larry  Armstrong of Galien, MI, Brad Armstrong of La Porte, IN, Ricky Armstrong of Kingsford Heights, IN; sister, Patty Cabler of Watertown, SD; eleven grandchildren, Josh, Kyle, Zach, Cody, Matt, Elizabeth, Alec, Braydon, Nicholas (Kayla), Amber (Mike), Alexis; ten great-grandchildren, Lucien, Ivory, Luna, Leo, Daizee, Gracelynn, Baker, Emerson, Myla, and Ryder.

 A long-time resident of La Porte, Elizabeth was a Christian and a homemaker who enjoyed many activities. She loved to fish and camp and was an avid craftsperson and painter. Elizabeth enjoyed flower gardening and playing Facebook games. Dancing brought her joy-when the children were little, she would play Polka music and encourage them to dance with her. She could also do a pretty mean Texas Two-Step. Family was everything to her and she will be greatly missed by them all. Elizabeth was more than just a title to those around her; she was a cherished wife, a nurturing mother, an adored grandmother and great-grandmother, a supportive sister, and a loyal friend. Her kindness knew no bounds, and her spirit was as generous as it was gentle. In her life, Elizabeth touched many hearts with her unconditional love and unwavering support. She was the kind of person who brought light into every room and left a lasting impression on every soul she met. Her absence is a void that cannot be filled, and her memory is a treasure we will hold onto forever.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a viewing from 11:00-12:00 noon on Saturday, March 9th, 2024.  A service will follow at noon at the funeral home. Cremation will take place, with burial at Salem Heights at a later date.

Melissa Elin "Missy" Nash, a cherished member of the La Porte community, passed away peacefully on March 5th, 2024, at the age of 52.

Born on May 5th, 1971, she was a lifelong resident of La Porte, Indiana. Missy grew up surrounded by a loving family, including her parents, James and Karen (Boklund) Burden, her brother Matthew (Varvara) Burden, and later, her own daughters, Cordelia and Isabella Nash. She was beloved by her lifelong friend and fiancé of many years, Greg Gropp, as well as her nephew Samuel (Burden) and niece Katherine (Burden). Her family circle was wide, with many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Professionally and personally, Missy was known for her sharp intellect, quick wit, and amazing memory. She spent many years as a paralegal with Friedman and Associates, and later for the Law Firm of Alan J. Sirinek.

Growing up, Missy attended St. Joseph School, and she was a member of Holy Family Parish, St. Peter Church. She was a graduate of LaPorte High School, where she ran track for two years, and attended two years of college at Purdue North Central. She played the French horn with the La Porte City Band alongside her mother, brother, and father as conductor, and had an extensive knowledge of music trivia. In addition to her musical talent, Missy was also known for her love of cooking.

Missy spent many years volunteering and teaching at her daughters’ schools, and she was always there whenever anybody needed help. She was a loving, caring, and generous soul, and her memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories we share and the love we continue to hold for her.

Luella Anderson, (93 ), of La Porte, Indiana passed away Monday, March 4th, 2024. Luella was born at Holy Family Hospital on April 28th, 1930, to Raymond and Eulalia (Foldenauer) Anderson.

Luella was a lifelong resident of La Porte. She graduated from St. Joseph Grade School and La Porte High School class of 1948. She was employed by La Porte Community Schools, Allis Chalmers Sales Branch, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and Universal Woodcrafters and retired from GTE in 1989 with 17 years of service as a service and repair representative.

Luella stayed active after retirement. She was a member of Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church. She volunteered or was a member of several organizations including; La Porte County Historical Society, AARP, St. Joseph Rosary Sodality, La Porte Hospital Health Porte Auxiliary and Foundation, Meals on Wheels, La Porte Hospital, and VNA Flu-Clinics. She was a Norte Dame Fan.

Luella is survived by several cousins and special friends. Her cousin, Judy; and her special friends, Roger and Sue with mention.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her best friend and companion, James Supanik; and cats, Mittens, Andy, and Maisie.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 7th, 2024, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 7th, 2024, at Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church, 109 C Street, La Porte, Indiana following the visitation. Reverend Nate Edquist will officiate.

Robert "Bob" Shaw, 78, of Knox, Indiana, passed away Sunday, March 3rd, 2024, at his home. 

He was born June 20th, 1945, in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Walter J. Shaw and Charlotte M. (Berg) Shaw.

Bob graduated from La Porte High School and served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. A plumber by trade, he worked for a while for H&G Plumbing, retiring from Dye Plumbing and Heating.  Bob loved to farm, loved his horses, and country music. He collected and restored antique Allis Chalmers tractors, which he displayed at the county fair. When Bob married his second wife, Judy Ainsworth, he became involved in 4-H with his children, volunteering with the Horse and Pony Club and the La Porte County Drill Team. He and Judy were 25-year members of the Moose Club in La Porte, and with the family, they enjoyed camping, trail riding, snowmobiling, and bowling. After Judy's death, Bob met and married the late Linda Henoch Shaw on July 13th, 2002, in Pioneer Land. Because of Bob's love for farming, they bought a farm in Knox, IN, and spent 20 years there. Together they enjoyed dancing and eating out, especially at the Bass Lake Pub. In addition, Bob was a member of the VFW Post 748 in Knox., as well as the La Porte County Mounted Sheriff Posse. He also enjoyed duck, geese, deer hunting, and raising Beagles.  

He is survived by his daughters; Michelle (Dave) Looney of Northport, FL, Deanna (Dale) Wyatt of Cadiz, KY, Yvonne Curless of La Porte, IN, Lori (Jerry) Hamlin of La Porte, IN; two sisters, Lenore Howard of La Porte, IN, Rowena Meyers of Michigan City, IN; four grandchildren, Hannah Looney, Nicholas Curless, Aliesha Hohalek, Bryan Curless; six great-grandchildren, Lane Hohalek, Lyla Hohalek, Autumn Curless, Aiden Curless, Jericho Curless, Jay Curless.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, wife Judy Shaw on April 10th, 2001; wife Linda Shaw on September 27th, 2023; brothers, Elbert "Bill" Shaw and James Shaw.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a viewing on Thursday, March 7th, 2024, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.  Cremation will take place, then burial at Door Village Cemetery at a later date.

Ronald W. Scherer, 88, passed away on Saturday, March 2nd, 2024, at Millers Health and Rehab in La Porte.

Ronald was born in La Porte, Indiana on January 17th, 1936, to Wilbur and Pearl Scherer.

On January 23rd, 1954, in La Porte, IN, he married Joan Elaine Luther who preceded him on December 20, 2020.  Surviving are his 3 sons, Terry (Renee) Scherer, Greg M. Scherer, and Jeff Scherer, all of La Porte; 6 grandchildren, Noelle Anderson, Nicole McIntire, and Brittany, Andrew, Kathryn, and Curtis Scherer; 4 great-grandchildren, Daven, Tatum, Willow, and Faith Anderson; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Curtis Scherer; and grandson, David Matthew Scherer.

Ronald worked as a civil engineer at Midwest Steel in Portage, Indiana.  He was an usher and the chairman of the board of elders at St. John's Lutheran Church.  Ronald enjoyed fishing, golfing, camping, and family get-togethers.  He was very active and busy with his family and friends.  Ronald was the assistant coach for Little League, was active in Boy Scouts, and pitched fast-pitch softball for the Lucky Cigars.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 13th, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Ken Schaeffer officiating.

A time of visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Edna "Diane" Childress, 66, passed away on Friday, March 1st, 2024 at Franciscan Health-Michigan City.

Diane was born on July 10th, 1957, in Peru, IN, to Joe and Sarah Ferguson.

On May 16th, 1982, in La Porte, IN, she married Robert Childress, who survives. Also surviving are her 2 children, Keshia Childress and Kevin Childress, both of Rolling Prairie; step-son, Jason Childress of Fort Myers, FL; 2 grandchildren, Landen Carriveau and Payten Bulger, both of Rolling Prairie; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Sarah Ferguson; son, Keith Childress; brothers, Charlie, James, and Roy Ferguson; sister, Betty Christian; father-in-law, Bill Childress; mother-in-law, Margie Childress; brother-in-law, Bill Childress, Jr.; and best friend, Theresa Bernacki.

Diane was a Loan Officer for many years at La Porte Community Federal Credit Union. She loved cooking, watching Food Network, and dragonflies.  Most importantly, Diane loved time spent with and caring for her family.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering will begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 9th, 2024, at Union Mills American Legion Post #295, 710 Water St., Union Mills, and will last until the last guest desires to show their respects.

Bernadette Sue Nizinski, 94, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, March 1st, 2024.

Bernadette was born in Terre Haute, IN, on December 23rd, 1929, to Edward and Marie Fischer.

In 1948, she married L. Gene Landes who preceded her in death.  In Terre Haute in 1975, Bernadette married her second husband, Norbert Nizinski who also preceded her in death. 

Surviving are her children, Felicia Dee Landes of Bonnerdale, Arkansas, Durenda (Mark) Lovas of Beaufort, South Carolina, Letitia (George) Steinfels of Jupiter, Florida, Brian (Kelly) Landes of Auburndale, Florida, and Gregg A. (Vicky) Landes of La Porte; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Amy Landes Lieberman; and grandson, Gregg Landes, Jr.  

Bernadette was an entrepreneur who managed Sales & Catering at McCormick Place International Trade Center in Chicago.  She was a professional roller skater and Master gardener.  She loved her cars and animals.  Bernadette was an avid fisherman, a carpenter creating woodworking sculptures, and an artist creating porcelain sculptures as well.  

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 10th, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Bob Vale officiating.

A time of visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until the time of service on Sunday at the funeral home.
