Rodrick McLean Jr.

Rodrick McLean Jr., 81, of Michigan City, Indiana passed away March 29th, 2023. Rodrick was born on October 13th, 1941, in Arkansas to the late Rodrick and Lucille (Bray) McLean. 

 

Rodrick and his wife Mary were the owners of Lakeshore Wholesale in Michigan City, La Porte, and Valaparasio, and McLean Auction Service.

 

He served his country in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Full Gospel Church of Deliverance in Michigan City and the Countryside Wesleyan Church in Alva, Florida where he spent many winters.

 

On April 18th, 1990, Rodrick married Mary Ekovich who survives. He is also survived by a son, Robert (Tracy) McLean of Michigan City; foster children, Amanda and Miranda Moore; grandchildren, Tommy and Chad Kaczmarek, Crystal Ramirez; great grandchildren, Sierra, C.J., Jalyn, Chole, Alexa, Jeremy, Hailey, and Hayden; a great great grandchild, Wren; siblings, Judy (Ray) Safirt of Michigan City, Debbie (Dan) Goodaker of La Porte, Jimmy (Louise) McLean of Stevensville, Michigan, and Gerald (Brenda) McLean of Benton Harbor, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents; children, Angela Kaczmarek, Anita Carol McLean, and Larry McLean; and siblings, James McLean, Sarah Parsley, Tony McLean, and Teddy McLean.  

 

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling  Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. following the visitation. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Roy J. Bergman Sr.

Roy J. Bergman Sr., 80, of La Porte, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, March 29th, 2023 at Franciscan Health Michigan City.

 

He was born in Chicago on December 31st, 1942, to John and Clara (Wille) Bergman.

 

Roy was a member of the PNA in La Porte. He enjoyed boating and most of all spending time with his family and friends.

 

Surviving are his two sons, Roy (Kaleena) Bergman and Ryan (Amber) Bergman; former wife, Penelope Bergman; brother, Neil (Helen) Bergman; four grandchildren, Zack Bergman, Mavrek Bergman, Reese Bergman and Vayda Cervi; and two great grandchildren, Kolton Bergman and Kooper Bergman.

 

Roy was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Tiffany Alice Bergman; sister, Dolores Powell; and longtime companion, Jerry Oswalt.

 

A memorial gathering will be held from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 1st, 2023 at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 West Johnson Road, La Porte, (219) 362-3100. Cremation will take place.

Sandra A. Justice

Sandra A. Justice, 84, of La Porte, Indiana passed away at home on Monday, March 27th, 2023. Sandra was born August 3rd, 1938, in La Porte to the late Elmer and Carita (Collier) Schoof.

 

On February 14th, 1958, Sandy married Tom Justice. Sandy is survived by her husband Tom Justice of 64 years; their three children, Susan (Steven) Burdine of Oklahoma, Steve (Shelly) Parker of Minnesota, and Carla (Scott) Siler of South Bend; grandchildren, Erin Justice, Tara Daley, Brandon and David Burdine, Adam and Parker Justice, and Rebecca and Matthew Siler; and a sister, Margo (Schoof) Brust. She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Douglas Justice. 

 

Sandy graduated from Union Mills High School in 1956, and went on to receive her Master’s degree in Education from Ball State University. She taught kindergarten for over 33 years in the La Porte County School System. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. 

 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1st, 2023, at the Union Mills Bethel Presbyterian Church, 110 E. Hamilton Street, Union Mills 46382. Pastor Bill Rogers will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the services in the church. 

 

Arrangements have been entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, in La Porte, Indiana.

Alice Jean "AJ" Helmken

Alice Jean "AJ" Helmken, a faith-filled, loving, and kind woman, passed away on March 26th, 2023, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born on March 22nd, 1947, in Michigan City, IN, Alice dedicated her life to her family, her work, and her community.

 

On May 11th, 2002, in La Porte, IN, Alice married the love of her life, Stephen Joseph Helmken, who survives her. Together, they created a beautiful life filled with love and laughter. Alice is also survived by her sister, Cathy L. (Jim) Underkoffler née Peterson of Indianapolis, IN; brother, Robin G. Peterson of Custer, WI; three nieces, Lauren (Laban) Runyon, Katy (Brandon) Meier, and Lisa (Jacob) Hill; and nephew, Eric Helmken. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glendon M. and Dorothy E. (Platt) Peterson.

 

Alice was a dedicated and hardworking employee at the Michigan City Department of Water Works, where she served as a head cashier and billing administrator. Her commitment to her work was evident in her attention to detail and her unwavering support for her colleagues. Alice's professionalism and kindness left a lasting impact on those who had the pleasure of working with her.

 

A woman of strong faith, Alice was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Michigan City. Her devotion to her faith was evident in her involvement in various church activities and her willingness to lend a helping hand whenever needed. Alice's faith-filled life was an inspiration to all who knew her.

 

AJ was also a proud and dedicated member of several organizations, including the La Porte Chapter #280 Order of the Eastern Star and served as past matron of the Lake Michigan Chapter #98 Order of the Eastern Star.  She honorably served the Eastern Star for 50 years. AJ's commitment to these organizations demonstrated her passion for service and her desire to make a positive impact on her community.

 

In addition to her involvement in the Eastern Star, Alice was a member of the Michiana Lions Club, where she worked tirelessly to support the club's mission of empowering volunteers to serve their communities. Her dedication to service was further exemplified by her role as a docent at Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City. Alice's love for animals, especially the backyard visitors, was well-known among her friends and family, and her work at the zoo allowed her to share that love with others.

 

Alice was a floral designer for over 10 years with Wrights Flowers and Joy of Flowers, both in Michigan City.  She had a special talent for arranging flowers, which she often used to brighten the lives of those around her. Her beautiful arrangements brought joy to countless people and served as a testament to her creativity and her generous spirit.

 

In her personal life, Alice was known for her loving nature and her unwavering kindness. She had a unique ability to make everyone around her feel special and loved, and her presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

 

As we remember Alice Jean Helmken, let us celebrate her life and the many ways in which she touched the lives of those around her. Her faith-filled spirit, her loving heart, and her kind soul will live on in the memories of her family, friends, and community members.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 3rd, 2023 at First United Methodist Church of Michigan City with Pastor Nancy Nichols and Pastor Phil Emerson officiating.  Burial will follow at Pinhook Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 2 - 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 2nd, 2023 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  At 3 p.m. an Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held.  Later, at 5 p.m., a Lions Memorial Service will be held.  Visitation directly preceding the service on Monday, will be held at 10 a.m. at the church.

Mary K. Collins

Mary K. Collins, 75, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Sunday, March 26th, 2023.

 

Mary was born August 2nd 1947, in Dayton, Ohio, to Harry and Dorothy (McGrath) Robinson. She was a homemaker and a school bus driver for the La Porte Community School Corporation retiring in 2004. 

 

On July 2nd, 1971, Mary married Harliss Collins who passed away March 16th, 2023.

She is survived by her sons, Michael (Lori) Collins of La Porte, Brian Collins, of Salyersville, Kentucky; and stepsons, Lynn (Sandie) Collins, of Pleasant Grove, Utah, Mark Collins, of American Fork, Utah, Greg (Jennifer) Collins, of Twin Falls, Idaho, Randy (Mari) Collins of Grovertown, Charlie (April) Collins of Grovertown; 15 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and a sister, Kristine (Michael) Marron of Clearwater, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother, Daniel Robinson. 

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. CST,  Thursday, March 30th, 2023, with a Celebration of Life following at 6:00 p.m., at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.

Rosalie Ann Talerico

Rosalie Ann Talerico, 85, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Sunday, March 26th, 2023. Rosalie was born February 22nd, 1938, to the late Joseph Derrick and Marjorie (Cowan).

 

On September 12th, 1959, Rosalie married John Talerico who survives. Rosalie is survived by her husband, John; three sons, Vincent J. (Shelly) Talerico of La Porte, Timothy J. (Linda) Talerico of La Porte, Mark A. (Nancy) Talerico of La Porte; grandchildren, Connor (Kandice) Talerico, Austin Talerico; and great grandchildren, Jackson and Amelia. 

 

Rosalie was a homemaker and member of Holy Family Parish, Sacred Heart Church. 

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, April 3rd, 2023, at Holy Family Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 201 Bach Street, La Porte, Indiana. Reverend Ian Williams will officiate. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the church prior to the Mass.

Diana L. Pavlack

Diana L. Pavlack, 73, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, March 22nd, 2023 at 10:20 pm in Franciscan Health - Michigan City.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, March 31st, 2023 at Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church, 1506 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN with Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 am - 10:00 am, Friday at the church. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

 

She was born March 18th, 1950 in Gary, IN. In Michigan City, IN she married Eugene Pavlack who survives in Michigan City, IN.

 

Also surviving are six sons, Edward (Debbie) Pavlack of Westville, IN, Michael (Fiance, Jenna Goodloe) Pavlack of Michigan City, IN, Marshel (Roxanne) Pavlack of Michigan City, IN, Bradley (Tabitha) Pavlack of Las Vegas, IN, Quenton Pavlack of Michigan City, IN and Nathan (Jennifer) Pavlack of Michigan City, IN; 15 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

 

She preceded in death by her two infant sons, David and Phillip Pavlack.

 

Diana enjoyed crocheting, quilting, knitting and sewing. She was the creative mind behind many a Halloween costume. She loved baking and decorating cakes for her grandchild. She was the best grandma and mother anyone could ask for.

Ann Marie Levendoski

Ann Marie Levendoski, 63, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, March 21st, 2023 at 2:45 pm in her home.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, March 30th, 2023 at Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church, 1506 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN with  Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial will follow in Saint Stanislaus Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 am - 10:00 am, Thursday at the church. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.    

 

She was born December 1st, 1959 in Michigan City, IN to the late Robert and Virginia (Senderak) Levendoski. 

 

Surviving are many cousins and other family members.

 

She was also preceded in death by sister, Gloria Jean Levendoski. 

 

Ann had worked as an accountant for the Indiana Department of Revenue and was a member of Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church. She enjoyed traveling, especially internationally and spending the holidays with her family. Ann was an active alumni of Purdue University who enjoyed watching all of their sports teams.

Carolyn S. Walter

Carolyn S. Walter, 80, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Wednesday March 22nd, 2023 at Golden Living Center in La Porte.

 

She was born December 11th, 1942 in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Donald Walter and Bernice (Luebker) Walter.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, Carolyn was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in La Porte. After graduating from high school, she worked at the La Porte license branch for 10 years and Howmet for 26 years, retiring in 2003. Carolyn was an avid reader and loved to watch old movies and soap operas on TV.  Old Maid was one of her favorite card games to play and she enjoyed a variety of crafts.

 

Carolyn is survived by her brother, Donald Walter of Portage, MI; nephew, Curtis (Karen Egge) Walter of Wheaton IL; niece, Michelle (Bill) Cavanaugh of Portage, MI; great niece, Emily Cavanaugh and two great nephews, Chris and Kyle Cavanaugh.

 

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Carol Walter.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 29th, 2023 from 11a.m. until service time at noon, with Pastor Dennis H. Quintin Alan Mayo

Quintin Alan Mayo, 22, of Mill Creek, Indiana, passed away Tuesday March 21st, 2023 in Lake County, IN after being involved in a motorcycle accident.

 

He was born December 22nd, 2000 in Michigan City, Indiana, the son of Richard and Carrie Mayo.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, Quintin graduated from La Porte High School in 2018, earning his Certified Mechanics License after his first year of High School and went on to work for Cleveland Cliffs Steel with his Dad, where he was a member of the Steel Workers local 6787.  He had many interests and enjoyed a variety of activities. Quintin was a 3rd degree black belt in Mixed Martial Arts, a member of the Fish Lake Baseball Club and a volunteer for the fish fry at the Fish Lake Conservation Club.  He built his own computer and loved video gaming. Quintin enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling with his dad, and riding his motorcycle.  He also proudly owned a 2019 Silverado truck which he upgraded with big tires and chrome.  Most of all, Quintin loved his family.  He often took his mom out for dinner and played with his niece.  He was a "Master Roaster", always joking around and acting silly but having fun.  He lived life to the fullest and will be sadly missed by those who survive him, including: his parents, Richard and Carrie of Mill Creek, IN;  grandfather, Sam Mayo of Michigan City, IN; brother, Scott P. Newman of MI; sister, Cheryl (Nathan) McCrudden of La Porte, IN; aunt, Stacie (Jeffrey) Harrison of Michigan City, IN; two uncles, Chris (Dea) Mayo of Munster, IN, Randy Mayo of Michigan City, IN; niece, Airadessa McCrudden and Yorkshire Terrier, Jack.

 

Quintin was preceded in death by his grandmother, Brenda Mayo.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a visitation on Monday March 27th, 2023 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, March 28, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Food will be served after the Tuesday visitation in the cafe at the funeral home. Cremation will take place.

Gerald N. Krcilek

Our beloved Father and Patriarch, Gerald N. Krcilek left this Earth on 3/22/2023 in LaPorte, IN at the age of 88. Gerald was born March 3rd, 1935 in Berwyn, IL to his parents Gerald J. and Jennie M. (Mannia) Krcilek. Gerald married Marlene (Beam) Krcilek October 12th, 1957 in LaPorte at St. Joseph Church and they celebrated 54 years together before Marlene’s passing in 2013.

 

Gerald loved spending time in nature, and for many years, his morning routine included walking his loyal pets in Fox Park.  Wherever he was, he was always on the look-out for American Indian artifacts, which he often found and collected.  His love of nature carried over into fishing, mushroom hunting, planting trees and feeding all the neighborhood birds!  Over the years, he enjoyed taking numerous road trips in his many station wagons.  (The minivan of the day!)  He always traveled with his large family in tow, along with a heart filled with faith and God.  His love of nature kept many animals safe and well-fed, and any turtle found crossing the road was certain to be rescued by Gerald!  As a proud patriot, not a day went by that he didn't put-out his American flag!  

 

He retired from Whirlpool, after 30+ years of working in their Quality Control Dept.  He was definitely OUR quality guy!  

 

Gerald is survived by his children, Christine (Richard) Ward, Juliet (Steven) Eaton, Gerald Matthew Krcilek (Pablo Montes De Oca) and Charles Krcilek. Grandchildren include Robert Sabie Jr., Erik (Jennifer) Sabie, Christopher (Raney) Sabie, Hannah Sabie, Nicholas Krcilek, Alexander Krcilek, Sarah Krcilek, Andrew Ward and Emily Ward (Ken Yarber). Great Grandchildren are Memphis Sabie and Egan Sabie. He’s also survived by his sisters Marilyn Levendoski and Shirley (Richard) Pietraszewski, several cousins and many nieces and nephews. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marlene, daughter Pamela Krcilek and brothers Michael and Donald Krcilek.

 

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 28th, 2023, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. A Vigil service will begin at 6:30 p.m.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 29th, 2023, at Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph Church, 109 C Street, La Porte. Reverend Nate Edquist will officiate. Family and friends may gather at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

Claudia Sue Breitzke

Claudia Sue Breitzke, 69, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Wednesday, March 22nd, 2023. She was born on March 15th, 1954, in La Porte to the late John Patrick and Virginia (Shroyer) Grace. 

 

Claudia retired from Miller's Merry Manor in La Porte as a Registered Nurse after many years of service. She had also served as a RN with La Porte Hospital and Memorial Hospital in South Bend. She graduated from La Porte High School and then Ivy Tech as a Registered Nurse. She enjoyed fishing and camping, but mostly her grandchildren.

 

Claudia was preceded in death by her parents; a husband, James Write in 2001; and a sister, Joyce Grace. She leaves behind a daughter, Amy Moore of La Porte; a son, Jerome Breitzke of La Porte; grandchildren, Scott (fiancee, Elin Boklund) Breitzke, Breanna (Russell) Miller, James Whitterberry, Mina (A.J.) Weigel, Lastat Parker, Tyler (Renee) Whitterberry, Ellie Marie Breitzke; great grandchildren, Mathew, Zane, David, and J.J. Whitterberry; and a niece Jeri Carol.

James "Jim" W. Shaw

James “Jim” W. Shaw, 73, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Tuesday, March 21st, 2023. Jim was born on July 28th, 1949, in La Porte to Walter and Charlotte (Berg) Shaw. 

 

Jim and his brother, Bill Shaw were the co-owners of Shaws' Auto Service in La Porte. Jim had also worked at Ace Hardware in Michigan City, and most recently Family Express in La Porte. He served his country in the United States Army. Jim was a volunteer with the 4-H Rabbit Club, and known for his delicious rabbit and noodles. 

 

On June 21st, 1969, Jim married Carol Smith who survives with their children, Schalonda (David) Pluta of South Bend, Jimmy A. (Deb LeRoy) Shaw of Rolling Prairie; grandchildren, Gregory Shaw, Jaedyn Shaw, Bailey Lyman, Ashton Lyman, Addison Lyman, Whitley Pluta, Waylon Pluta; Deb’s daughter, Sophia; and siblings, Lenore Howard of La Porte, Rowena Meyers of Michigan City, and Robert (Linda) Shaw of Knox. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bill Shaw, and a nephew, Wally Shaw.

Ronald Earl Curry, Jr.

Ronald Earl Curry, Jr., 62, passed away on Tuesday, March 21st, 2023.

 

Ronald was born on October 11th, 1960 in La Porte, IN, to Ronald Curry, Sr. and Carol (Wolfenbarger) Alward.

 

Surviving Ronald are his children, Jerome Curry of Fort Wayne, Jamie Berrum of Fort Wayne, Jody Curry of Fort Wayne, Jessica Curry of La Porte, and Ronald Curry, III of La Porte; grandchildren, Veronica, Elias, Anna, Jocelyn, and Ariana; and siblings, Deborah Curry, Jennifer Alward, Melody Kershman, and Eric Alward.

 

He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Curry Sr.

 

Ronald was a retired mechanic at Main Muffler.

Virginia H. (Shepherd) Taylor

Virginia H. (Shepherd) Taylor, 89, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Tuesday, March 21st, 2023. Virginia was born July 6th, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois to the late Sidney Ross and Helen Ida (Schultz) Shepherd.

 

On May 3rd, 1952, Virginia married John “Jack” Taylor who preceded her in death on December 3rd, 2019. Virginia was a graduate of La Porte High School Class of 1952. After raising her children, Virginia worked for the La Porte School Corporation for 20 years as a substitute teacher's aide in the Special Education Dept. She also was a member of Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph Church.

 

Virginia is survived by two daughters, Debra Kehoe of Dyer, Indiana and Patricia Cundiff of Lexington, Kentucky; two sons, Steven (Ella) Taylor and Jeffrey Taylor, both of La Porte, Indiana; nine grandchildren, Jason Gorman, Todd (Alicia) Gorman, Amy Gorman, Tara Bowling, Taylor (Beth) Cundiff, Janelle (Aaron) Taylor, Jayton (Abby) Taylor, Cole and Eli Taylor; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jack; and a little son, Donald in 1969; and a sister Sylvia Shepherd.

 

Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 11a.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Private burial will take place at Pine Lake Cemetery.

Mary Ann Huber

Mary Ann Huber, 85, of La Porte, passed away on Thursday, March 16th, 2023 at Trail Creek Place.

 

Mary was born on July 29th, 1937 in La Porte, IN, to Lester and Ruth (Parthun) Diederich.

 

On August 6th, 1955 in La Porte IN, she married Raymond Francis Huber, Jr. who preceded her in death.  Surviving are her sons, Terry (Sandra) Huber, Greg (Lisa) Huber, Tom Huber, and Cory (Amy) Huber, all of La Porte; 8 grandchildren, Zachary (Colleen) Huber of La Porte, Meridith (Spencer) Mansfield of South Bend, Sarah (George Iki) Huber of Placentia, CA, Carter Huber of La Porte, Summer Huber of Key Largo, FL, Connor (Brittney) Huber of La Porte, Bailey (Neiha Sanchez) Huber of Buchanan, MI, and Stephanie (Matt) Graham of La Porte; and 10 great-grandchildren, Maggie Welsh, Leo Welsh, Claire Huber, Elise Huber, Ellie Huber, Ramona Mansfield, Oona Mansfield, Iris Mansfield, Morgan Graham, and Chase Magnuson.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Norma Jean Barden; brother-in-law, LeRoy Barden; uncle, Lawrence Diederich; and niece, Vicki Young.

 

Mary was a paraprofessional for many years at Riley Elementary.  Her real passion and love in life was caring for and nurturing children of all ages.  Mary not only had her immediate family and grandchildren that she cared for, but she also cared for many other children and young adults, some who stayed at the family's home on Pine Lake for days, weeks, and even years.  She lived her life unselfishly and with endless energy.

 

A Private Graveside Service will take place at Pine Lake Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 23rd, 2023 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

Vernelle Jean Bush, 76, passed away on Thursday, March 16th, 2023 at Northwest Health - La Porte.

 

Vernelle was born on February 12th, 1947 in Chicago, IL, to Warren and Jean (Warren) Bush.

 

Surviving Vernelle are her brother, Lloyd (Bertha) Bush of Saint Joseph, MI; and nephew, Tim Bush of Saint Joseph, MI.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; and nephew, John Bush.

 

Vernelle was a financial consultant for many years.  She was a member of First Baptist Church and Fellowship Center, where she worked as a financial coordinator.  Vernelle enjoyed attending community concerts.

Harliss Collins

Harliss Collins, 82, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Thursday, March 16th, 2023.

 

Harliss was born November 22nd, 1940, in Salyersville, Kentucky to Lee Collins and Dolly Bailey.

 

On July 2nd, 1971, Harliss married Mary Kathleen Robinson. Harliss worked as a Heavy Equipment operator for the Railroad and retired in 1990. He served on the Stark County Sheriff’s Posse. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, gardening and also woodworking.

 

He is survived by his wife Mary; sons, Lynn (Sandie) Collins, of Pleasant Grove, Utah, Mark Collins, of American Fork, Utah, Greg (Jennifer) Collins, of Twin Falls, Idaho, Randy (Mari) Collins of Grovertown, Charlie (April) Collins of Grovertown, Michael (Lori) Collins of La Porte, Brian Collins, of Salyersville, Kentucky; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren; brothers, Haskell Collins, of North Judson, Hank Collins, of Dutton, Alabama; and sisters, Justine Salyers of Knox, Josephine Born of Winamac.

Sharon Ann Wathen

Sharon Ann Wathen, 61, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Thursday March 9, 2023 at Northwest Health-La Porte.

 

She was born January 8th, 1962 in Eldorado, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Wathen and Betty (Wiggins) Wathen.

 

Sharon truly enjoyed the company of her family especially her grandchildren, friends, and her dogs. She enjoyed collecting butterflies and an array of flowers. She will be greatly missed and will be forever in our hearts. 

 

She is also survived by her son, Eric (Lindsay) Wathen of La Porte, IN; daughter, Melissa Mueller of Pigeon Forge, TN; two brothers, Randy Wathen, Jim Wathen; five grandchildren, Viviannah Riley, Jordana Patten, Emma Wathen, Colin Wathen, Miles Wathen; and her dear family friend Larry Welch.

Heather Moore

Heather Moore, 41, of Walkerton, Indiana, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 12th, 2023 at her home with her family by her side.

 

She was born December 11th, 1980 in Lake City, Florida, the daughter of Jim Moore and Paula Oblinger.

 

A lifelong resident to the Plymouth area, Heather pursued an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Ancilla College. Heather enjoyed reading and listening to music of just about every genre. She had an interest in psychology and enjoyed researching case studies. She especially loved watching True Crime documentaries. Heather was a loving and caring mother and grandmother, who took most pride in spending time with her daughters and granddaughters.

 

She is survived by her four daughters, Patience Forsythe of Walkerton, IN, Zailey Hess of Plymouth, IN, Quincey Hess of Lafyette, IN, Jezzabelle Hess of Bourbon, IN; mother, Paula Oblinger; step mom, Ann Moore; brother, Troy Oblinger of Cincinnati, OH; and two granddaughters, Lilly and Violet Fisher of Walkerton, IN.

 

Heather was preceded in death by her father, Jim Moore and brother, James Moore.

Charles "Lucky" Stephenson

Charles "Lucky" Stephenson, 73, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully Saturday March 4th, 2023 at Northwest Health - La Porte.

 

He was born January 22nd, 1950 in Knox, Indiana, the son of Jack Stephenson and Jane (Brooks) Stephenson.

 

Charles was a lifelong resident of the area graduating from North Judson High School. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, and playing on his computer in his free time, but loved nothing more than to relax and listen to his CDs. 

 

He is also survived by his daughter, Marla Nine of Winamac, IN; two sisters, Lynn (Jose) Hernandez of Knox, IN, Bonnie (Joe) Velazquez of Water Burro, SC; four grandchildren, Kourtney Fitch of Winamac, IN, Mercedes Nine of Winamac, IN, Kendall Murray of Winamac, IN, and Randi Ingram of Medaryville, IN.

Lyle Schmidt

Lyle Schmidt of Crawfordsville, IN, passed away February 18th, 2023, at the Lane House with family by his side. He was 85 years old.

 

Born in La Porte, IN, he was the son of Norman & Eunice (Glassman) Schmidt. He graduated from La Porte HS and received a Bachelors’ Degree from Indiana State. He was awarded the Wabash Honorary Alumnus for the class of ’95.

 

He married Judith Johnson of Sheridan, IN, in 1958. Surviving family includes his wife, Judy; son, Jim Schmidt; 3 daughters, Laura Schmidt, Lucy Black, and Jill Schmidt; 6 Grandchildren, Zachary, Bruce, Daniel, Jaclyn, Kate and Will; and 3 Great Grandchildren, Maddox, Henley, and Naomi. Lyle was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Janet Yagelski.

 

Lyle was involved in many community activities. He helped found the Sugar Creek Ducks Unlimited Chapter, and he joined Judy in starting the “Community Friends” International Student Program at Wabash College in 1985 and it continues to successfully aid many international students at the college. Lyle’s seasonal occupations were The Strawberry Festival (signage and advertising), The Covered Bridge Festival (Parking/Security) and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Yellow Shirt Security). His hobbies were fishing, making and placing bluebird boxes across the golf courses, making his famous cookies for his family and friends, avid bird watching and was well known for his Hoosier Daddy Salsa that he made and sold locally every year.

 

Lyle’s career started in management at Kroger and in 1965 he started at R.R. Donnelley’s. He retired in 1996 as a Senior Customer Service Representative.

Daniel R. Gordon, 79, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Sunday, March 12th, 2023 at 10:25 pm in Franciscan Health - Michigan City.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, March 17th, 2023 at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, 606 S. Woodland Ave., Michigan City, IN. He was born January 21st, 1944 in Michigan City, IN to the late Arnel J. and Katherine (Volk) Gordon Jr. On November 20, 1965 in Michigan City, IN he married Joy Ann Furois who survives in Michigan City, IN.

 

Also surviving are two sons, Richard (Kristy) Gordon of La Porte, IN and Scott Gordon of Michigan City, IN; six grandchildren, Nicholas Fogarty, Adam Fogarty, Abigail Gordon, Clarissa Gordon, Aidan Gordon and Sophia Gordon; two great-grandchildren, Marlie Fogarty and Cooper Fogarty; three sisters, Patricia (John) Kubik of Trail Creek, IN, Cecilia Granzo of La Porte, IN and Lucy Barden of La Porte, IN.

 

He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Theresa Fogarty; and two brothers, Douglas and Kenneth Gordon.   

 

Daniel retired as a mechanic and was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran. He was a member of Queen of All Saints Catholic Church and St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Daniel enjoyed fishing and working of cars.

Arnold "Arnie" Schoof

Arnold (Arnie) Schoof, 85, passed away on March 12th, 2023, in the home he built, with his family by his side.  He was born December 28th, 1937 in LaPorte, Indiana, the son of Lawrence and Gladys (Wilhelm) Schoof.  He was baptized, confirmed and married in St. Paul United Church of Christ and graduated from Union Township High School.  He married Dorothy (Dottie) Arndt on March 17th, 1978.

 

He grew up on the family farm and helped work the ground from an early age into adulthood, until the family farm was sold.  It taught him the value of manual labor, the love of the outdoors, responsibility and maintenance.  He could fix almost anything.

 

Arnie retired, after 50 years of service, from Larson Danielson Construction Company where he was an accountant.  He was most grateful for the many friendships he found within the construction community.

 

Devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren, the time he spent with them enjoying activities were his fondest memories.  He enjoyed woodworking, deer hunting, fishing, bowling, gardening and golf.  He also enjoyed watching the Cubs and Purdue basketball.  Arnie played basketball in high school at Union Township but most importantly in his life, were his loving wife, his family and especially his grandchildren.

 

He is survived by two daughters, Julie (Jeff) VanLiew, of Bradenton, Florida, Janet (Bob) Archer, of LaPorte, Indiana, brother, Larry (Liz) Schoof, two grandchildren, Kyle VanLiew and Jessica (Donald) Miller, as well as several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Gene, daughter Pamela and brother Melvin.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, LaPorte, Indiana, where the family will receive friends on Sunday, March 26th, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.  The celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 27th with Pastor Matthew Becker officiating, followed by internment at Tracy Lutheran Cemetery.  A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Monday.

Daniel Woodruff

Daniel Lee Woodruff, Sr. 86 of Westville, passed away Friday, March 10th, 2023 in Walkerton, Indiana.

 

He was born on June 5th, 1936 in Michigan City, Indiana to Louis and Dorothy (Crawford) Woodruff. On May 25th, 1970 he married Alice Beaty who passed away April 19th, 2021.

 

Daniel is survived by his children Cindy (Dennis) Kreske, Wendy Woodruff, Valerie Houghton, Danny Woodruff, Mark (Charlene) Woodruff, Sherry (Jeff) Amor, Barbara (Todd) Miller, Joe (Maggie) Metts, and Brady (Karen) Metts; many grandchildren, several great grandchildren and his brother Edward Woodruff. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter Brenda Woodruff, his son Steven Woodruff, his brother Dick Woodruff, and his sisters Nancy Childress, Sue Woodruff, and Pat Risner.

 

Daniel loved camping, fishing, the outdoors and spending time with his family.

 

Funeral services will be at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, March 14th at Newhard Funeral Home in Westville. His son Mark Woodruff will officiate. Burial will be in Hanna Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the time of services on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Leonard "Len" John Urban

Leonard "Len" John Urban, 76, of La Porte, passed away on Thursday, March 9th, 2023 at Northwest Health - La Porte, surrounded by close family members.

 

Len was born on April 23rd, 1946 in Melrose Park, IL, to Richard and Emily Urban.

 

On September 13th, 1969 in East Chicago, IN, he married Cecilia Ann Sobolewski, who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Tammy (Tom) Myers of Terre Haute, IN and Adam Urban of La Porte; 2 grandchildren, Taylor and Trenton; 3 great-grandchildren, Paislee, Kynlee, and Jamison; one great-grandchild on the way; sisters, Carol (LeRoy) Stayley of AZ and Deloris Short of La Porte; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Linda (Jerry) Evans; brother, Richard Urban; and brother-in-law, Glen Short.

 

Len worked as a millwright for U.S. Tobacco and Local 1693.  He proudly served in the United States Air Force.  Len will be fondly remember for his patriotism.

 

Known as "Snowflake" for his brilliant white hair, Len loved having fun, in a goofy sort of way, with his family.  His humor could be smart, sarcastic, and even dark at times.  Family holidays, especially those that included food, were at the top of Len's favorites list.  In his early years, Len enjoyed fishing, but later grew into a homebody, especially spending time sitting around Adam's pond affectionately called "Lake Minnetonka".

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 15th, 2023 at Saint Peter Catholic Church with Father Nate Edquist officiating.  Burial with military honors will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the church.

Jean Aldona Clagg

Jean Aldona Clagg, 80, of La Porte, passed away on Thursday, March 9th, 2023 at Brickyard Healthcare- Terrace Care Center. 

   

Jean was born in Lithuania, on September 27th, 1942 to Joseph and Elena (Elsteris) Rudzinskas.  She married Don Clagg in January 1961.

 

Surviving Jean are her daughter, Aldona "Cris" C. Clagg of La Porte; sisters, Ann Ziegler and Donna Hathcock, both of La Porte; brother, Joseph (Mary Ann) Rudzinskas of Savannah, GA; 7 nieces and nephews, which includes beloved niece and Goddaughter, Jeni McGuire.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Kenneth Clagg on February 11th, 1994; and husband Don Clagg on March 7th, 2023.

 

Jean was a Certified Nurse Assistant for 30 years between Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton, IL and Jordans Nursing Home in Bridgman, MI.. She was a member of Christ Church.  Jean loved birds, animals, and being with her family,  but her greatest love was Jesus. 

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

 

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 25th, 2023, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Peter Bailey officiating.

Lisa Brown, 46, of La Porte, Indiana passed away at her home after a brief battle with cancer on March 11th, 2023. 

 

Lisa was born on October 6th, 1976, in La Porte to Richard and Linda (Bowlby) Mrkva.

 

She married Ricky J. Brown on December 16th, 2000, who sadly preceded her in death on February 23rd, 2010. She was a homemaker and enjoyed her grandbabies. She also enjoyed old movies, history, and music.

 

Lisa is survived by her parents, Linda (Richard) Mrkva of La Porte; a daughter, Jessica (Cleston Caudill) Boone of La Porte; a son, Joshua (Roseva Cheeks) Brown of La Porte; granddaughters, Athena and Nova Caudill; and a sister, Kelly (Joseph) Krause of Hendersonville, Tennessee.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Janna Brown on April 10th, 2014.

Gary Lee Havens, 78, of La Porte, passed away on Thursday, March 9th, 2023 at Brickyard Healthcare - Terrace Care Center. 

   

Gary was born in La Porte, IN, on February 14th, 1945 to Eugene Alfred and Dorothy O'June (Lashbrook) Havens. 

 

Surviving are his children, Christopher (Robin) Havens of La Porte and Juli (Jason Gohsman) Verkler of Wheatfield; 2 grandsons, Connor and Robert Hageniers of La Porte; brother, Terry (Judy) Havens of Arvada, CO; special friends, Eli (Gina) Russi of New Carlisle; former wife, Susan Havens of Granger; and grandpup, Addy.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joy Deken; brother, Larry Havens; and son-in-law, Bryan S. Verkler.

 

Gary worked as a foreman at American Home Foods for over 20 years.  He was a devoted member of La Porte Assembly of God.  Gary enjoyed watching Notre Dame football.  He was admitted to the La Porte High School Football Hall of Fame.  While in high school he was nicknamed "Tuffy".

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, March 17th, 2023 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Jeffrey Hines officiating.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 10 am until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.  Cremation will take place following the service.

Barbara "Barb" J. Hooper

Barbara "Barb" J. Hooper, 73, passed away on Thursday, March 9th, 2023 at Settlers House.

 

Barb was born on September 5th, 1949 in Queens, NY, to Anthony and Lillian (Walthers) Wroblewski.

 

Surviving Barb are her sisters, Linda Askew of Amsterdam, NY and Jayne DeBois of Mastic, NY; and dear friends, Cindy Ault, Lorraine Tighe and Marissa Jongkind, all of La Porte.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents.

 

Barb taught physical education and health at Kesling Middle School in La Porte for 40 years.  While there, she also coached and was the Athletic Director for many years, retiring in 2018.  Before coming to La Porte schools, Barb taught for several years in the South Central School Corporation.

 

Barb was an avid dog trainer for over 40 years and even competed with her dogs in flyball and Frisbee competitions.  She was an active member and taught many classes through Trail Creek Dog Training Club, as well as, sharing her skills at Camp Gone to the Dogs.  Barb's love for dogs was so deep that she helped organize a group of therapy dogs, including her own pets, that made monthly visits to La Porte Hospital for over 20 years.   She also personally raised seven puppies for Leader Dogs for the Blind.  Her dogs are guiding people all over the U.S.

 

She faithfully served on the board of the La Porte County Small Animal Shelter for several years and would aid people in wildlife rescues.

 

Many people recognized Barb with her miniature horse, Libby, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army during the Christmas holiday.  Libby loved to ring the bell and entertain her fans at the La Porte Post Office.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  A Private Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at a later date.

Robert A. "Bob" Shriner, Sr.

 Robert A. "Bob" Shriner, Sr., 83, United States Marine, of Greenfield passed away at 3:51pm Wednesday, February 28th, 2023 at the Franciscan Health Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. 

 

A celebration of life gathering will be from 5pm-8pm Wednesday, March 15, 2023 for family and friends at the American Legion John Franklin Miller Post 37, 756 East U.S. Highway 20, Michigan City, IN. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

 

Bob was born on April 20th, 1939 in Mishawaka, IN to Howard and Marie Shriner.  He married Patricia Sommer and was father to Robert Jr. and Christopher.  He is survived by a brother, Errol (Stephanie) Shriner of Florida; a sister, Bonita (Dave) Wyatt, of Mishawaka; his son, Robert (Kristal) Shriner, Jr., of Greenfield; a step-daughter, Diane Martin, of Michigan City; a former wife, Myrna Caddo-Shriner, of Laporte; and four grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his parents, a wife, a sister, a son, and grandson. 

 

Bob joined and served in the U.S. Marine Corps., and, upon honorable discharge, provided over 25 years of service in several areas of the Indiana Department of Correction, served as Deputy Sheriff in Noble County, and owned the 52nd Street Pub & Ale House in Indianapolis. He enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing, visiting the Smoky Mountains, and spending time with family and friends. Bob was a member of the Marine Corp League and American Legion. 

 

He was a caring brother, devoted father, proud grandfather, and steadfast friend with strong values, who knew no strangers. His legacy will carry on reminding us that we control our attitudes.

Daniel Robert Hosna

Daniel Robert Hosna, 72, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away at 6:59 p.m. on Saturday, January 28th, 2023, in his home after a hard-fought battle with cancer, surrounded by family and loved ones.  

 

Dan started his adventure in Berwyn, Illinois on April 26th, 1950. He was born to Lorraine D (Timm) and William R. Hosna and was raised by his mother and her husband Charles T. Leach. Dan is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Janet (Amberg) Hosna, his two children, T.C. Hosna (Jon Voelz) of Westminster, Colorado and Carolyn Hosna of Austin, Texas.  His pride and joy were his succession of Bulldogs and Schnauzers. 

 

A graduate of Indiana State University with a degree in journalism, Dan was an award-winning senior sales executive with a printing company for over 40 years. He leaves behind many cherished colleagues and clients.

 

An avid boater from an early age, Dan acquired his first boat in high school. With Sea Scout Troop 132 he co-skippered a sailing cruise of the Out Islands of the Bahamas, and later returned to cruise the Islands with family and friends. Dan was a founding member of Hobie Fleet 126 and took part in several Chicago-to-Mackinac Island sailboat races. Dan and Jan created the first Dingy Derby treasure hunt held at the Washington Park Marina that grew in popularity for more ten years. He loved weekends on Lake Michigan and taking summer cruises along the eastern shoreline in his SeaRay cruiser with his family. A long-time member of the Michigan City Yacht Club, Dan was the Club’s Commodore between 1996 and 1998. The camaraderie he shared with his boating friends produced a real joy in Dan’s life. 

 

In addition to boating, Dan loved non-fiction history books, walks on the beach with his dogs, and playing pranks. His family will miss his sly sense of humor, favorite sayings, inspiring work-ethic, heartfelt correspondence, and his skippering skills at the helm that always made them feel confident and safe. 

 

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, March 11th, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Michigan City, Indiana.

Richard J. Bechinski

Richard J. Bechinski, 68, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, February 25, 2023 in Apache Junction, AZ.

 

Funeral services will be held at 6:30 pm, Monday, March 13, 2023 at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.

 

He was born July 1st, 1954 in Michigan City, IN to the late Joseph and Phyllis (Kaczka) Bechinski. On July 5th, 1975 in Michigan City, IN he married Cynthia Jones who survives in Michigan City, IN.

 

Also surviving are two daughters, Lisa (Edward) Rompca of Schererville, IN and Stacie Bechinski of Rock Hill, SC; two grandchildren, Josephine Rompca and Lincoln Rompca; sister, MaryAnn Bynes of Johnson City, NY; sister-in-law, Ronda Bechinski, Decatur, IN; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Maggie.

 

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jeffrey Bechinski.

 

Rich retired after 42 years as a millwright at ArcelorMittal. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Masonic Lodge F&AM 83, York Rite, the Scottish Rite and the New Buffalo Gun Club. Rich enjoyed riding his Harley, driving his Corvette and spending his free time in his pole barn and with his family.

Edward William Dennett

Edward William Dennett, 72, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Sunday, March 5th, 2023 at 11:52 a.m. in Franciscan Health - Michigan City.

 

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 9th, 2023 at Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek. A celebration of life reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 9th, 2023 at St. Joseph Young Men's Society, 2001 Franklin Street, Michigan City, Indiana 46360. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements.

 

He was born September 18th, 1950, in La Porte, Indiana, to the late Victor and Emily (Pospishil) Dennett. On March 3rd, 1973, in Michigan City, Indiana, he married Laura Lee (Ashcraft) Dennett, who survives.

 

Also surviving are three daughters, Theresa (Terry) Greetham and Jennifer Thomas both of Michigan City, IN, and Sandra Heuer of La Porte, IN; one brother, Jim Dennett of Michigan City, IN; two sisters, Deb Campbell of Union Mills, IN, and Jean (Stan) Szymanski of SC; nine grandchildren, Laura Dennett, Scottie Thomas, Samantha Thomas, Kasondra Thomas, Tyler Westman, Matthew Westman, Savannah Heuer, K.J. Heuer, and Jax Heuer; and six great-grandchildren.

 

Preceding in death by parents; four sisters, Rose (John) Timm, Lorraine (Gene) Younggreen, Patricia (Donald) O'Connor, and Victoria (John) Rienke; and one brother, Mike (Valerie) Dennett.  

 

Edward was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He loved being with family and friends especially at cookouts and bon fires. Edward had a passion to make soup and prime rib dinners to feed any size army. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, playing guitar, listening to different types of music, and watching concerts (Loud!) on DVDs. Edward also enjoyed playing golf and softball. He avidly watched the Chicago Cubs and Bears, NASCAR, and his favorite television shows (CSI, Criminal Minds, SVU, Blue Bloods, Homestead Rescuers, and Gold Rush). He will be greatly missed.

Mary Ann Carr

Mary Ann Carr, 79, of La Porte, passed away on Wednesday, March 8th, 2023 at her home.

 

Mary Ann was born on June 10th, 1943 in Chicago, IL, to Phillip A.and Helen Jean (LaMarche) Frye.

 

Surviving are her beloved daughter, Patricia Carr of La Porte; 6 grandchildren, Grace Elkins, Senn Zellers, Andrew Revak, Kiya Long, Elliott and Abby Carr; 1 great-grandson, Jackie Zellers; siblings, William Frye of Lake Tahoe, CA, Timothy Frye of Warsaw, and Joseph Frye of La Porte; many nieces and nephews; and dearest friend, David Kirkby.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughters, Mary Jeanne Elkins, Elizabeth Ann Zellers, and Kathleen Long; grandsons, Jerry Zeller and Willis Elkins; 3 brothers, John, Thomas, and Phillip Frye; and sister, Kathleen Johnson. 

 

Mary Ann worked as the headmaster secretary at La Lumiere School and then as a secretary and accountant for Saint Andrews Products.  She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a volunteer at La Porte Hospital, and served on the Salvation Army Meals Committee.  She was an avid fan of the Cubs, Black Hawks and Michigan State teams.  Mary enjoyed reading, sewing and especially time with her kids and grandkids.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 16th, 2023 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Nate Edquist officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be from 4 - 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15th, 2023 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  The reciting of the rosary will take place at 5:30 p.m.

Sandra Parker

Sandra K Parker, 82, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, March 7th, 2023 at Northwest Health-La Porte in La Porte, IN.

 

She was born February 26th, 1941 in South Bend, Indiana, the daughter of Kenneth Bealor and Lois (Pearson) Bealor.

 

Sandra was a longtime member of the Door Village United Methodist Church.  Sandra was a fun-loving person enjoying many things in life. She even had the patience to drive a school bus for many years. She loved to bowl, camping with her family, baking her favorite goods and hosting all her holiday family get togethers at her home. She also loved playing cards, especially euchre, doing puzzles, going to the casino and watching her favorite programs on the Hallmark channel. But Sandra's true passion in life was just being with her family most importantly her grandchildren. 

 

On May 14th, 1961, she married Larry L. Parker who preceded in death March 3rd, 2011.

 

She is survived by her two sons, Douglas (Tina) Parker of La Porte, IN, James (Nicole) Parker of South Bend, IN; daughter, Lori (Scott) Ehrick of La Porte, IN; two sisters, Iona Gring, Sue Smith; eight grandchildren, Kenneth (Katie) Parker, Erin Parker, Matt (Sarah) Lilly, Dustin (Hailey) Parker, Jessica Parker, Alannah Walsh, Tyler (Chloe) Ehrick, Cody Ehrich; three great granchildren Lilly, Penny, and Oliver Parker.

 

Sandra was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, Gene, Richard, Williard, David, Clifford, and Robert Bealor.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Friday, March 10 from 11 am until 1 PM. A life celebration will be held at the funeral home at 1 PM.  A private interment will follow at the Swan Lake Cemetery at a later date.

Charles F. Glassman

Charles F. Glassman, 79, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Wednesday, March 8th, 2023. He was born on June 29, 1943, in Michigan City, Indiana to Harry and Lydia (Irk) Glassman. 

 

Charles served his country in the United States Army. He retired from the La Porte County Highway Department after serving 20 years as a Truck and Heavy Equipment Driver. Charles and his wife were known for providing Hog Roasts. They also provided firewood for many customers over the years. 

 

On August 25th, 1965, Charles married Sharon Hungerford who survives with daughters, Penny (Steve) Gross of La Porte, Cheryl (Ricky) Morris of La Porte; grandchildren, Jennifer Wuthrich, Michael Wuthrich, Stephanie Wuthrich; sisters, Rose Dosher, Franny Pollard; and a brother, Lawrence Glassman. He was preceded in death by brothers, Harvey Glassman, George Glassman; and a sister, Beth Clark.

 

Cremation has taken place with Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home Essling Chapel in La Porte, Indiana. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Rosalie Brettin

Rosalie June Brettin, 92, of La Porte, passed away on Tuesday, February 28th, 2023.

 

Rosalie was born on June 21st, 1930 in Chicago, IL, to John and Rose (Kirschenstein) Rademacher.

 

On November 5th, 1949, she married Edward Brettin, who preceded her in death on November 7, 2007.  Surviving Rosalie are her children, Carolyn Brettin of La Porte, Edward (Tama) Brettin of Madison, WI, Linda (Robert) Shepro of Carlsbad, CA, and Paul (Jennifer) Brettin; 7 grandchildren, Rob and Amanda Allen, Andrew Brettin, Nick and Meg Shepro, and Jacob and Noah Brettin; 1 great-grandchild, Carson Allen; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tim and Peg Brettin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded by her husband; parents; 2 brothers, John and Robert Rademacher; and sister, Dorothy Peterson.

 

Rosalie was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she volunteered in numerous activities with both the church and school.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 13th, 2023 at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Albers officiating.  Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the church.

Stanley Kukla

  

Stan was born in La Porte, IN, on April 25, 1963 to Stanley Adam and Pauline (Mrozinski) Kukla. 

 

On May 31, 2008,  in La Porte, he married Tammy who survives him.  Also surviving are his sons, Stanley (Becky) Kukla of La Porte, Stephen (Kristen) Kukla of Plymouth, and Garrett (Sarah) Kautz of La Porte; daughter, Mallory (Brett Buckingham) Kautz of Chicago, IL; grandchildren, Amanda Kukla, Kade Kukla, Kenzie Kukla, Jenna Kautz and Amelia Kautz; brother, Chris (Pam) Kukla of La Porte; sisters, Debbie (Dave) Orszulak of La Porte and Andi (Jim) Fabrowicz of La Porte; sister-in-law, Mary Kay Kukla of Georgia; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as Sis, his cat.

 

Stan was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Kukla.

 

He was a mill attendant at US Steel for many years.  Stan loved Disney and spending time with his grandchildren  He enjoyed his Harley Davidson motorcycle, camping, and looking for shark teeth on the beach in Florida..

 

Stan also proudly served his country in the United States Navy.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

 

A Memorial Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

LeRoy "Roy" Langford

LeRoy "Roy" Langford, 91, passed away on Friday, March 3rd, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his family.

 

He was born on January 6th, 1932 in Rose Hill, AL, to Eula Mae (Moore) and Hugh Langford.

 

Roy was a 1950 graduate of Straughn High School and a 1956 graduate of Auburn University.  Between high school and college, Roy served in the Alabama National Guard, where he received an honorable discharge in 1953.

 

After graduating from Auburn, Roy worked as a project engineer with Allis-Chalmers in Gadsden, AL.  He was then transferred to their plant in La Porte, IN.  While working at Allis-Chalmers in La Porte, Roy met a summer intern, Jane Applegarth.

 

Together, they enjoyed a courtship and 61 year marriage.  Roy spent much of his career at Allis-Chalmers until the plant closed in 1985.  He then continued as an engineer at Wheel Horse/Toro in South Bend, IN.  He eventually retired as a lead engineer from Toro in Bloomington, MN.

 

For many years, Roy was active in Jaycees and in his church, First United Methodist Church, where he served on numerous committees and boards, as well as serving as a weekly counter, newspaper stuffer, and usher.

 

Roy is survived by his wife, Jane, who was his parenting, gardening, and life companion.  Together, they built a life and wonderful home for three children, eight grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Trudy Hammett, Kirk, Hugh B, Rabon, Exa Jordan, Janie Clark, and Reba Merrill.

 

Roy is survived by his wife, Jane; sons, John (Katrina) and Eric (Jody); daughter, Melissa (Doug) Beck; grandchildren, MaryBeth (Kole), Jack, Sarah, Sam, Tom, Caroline, Anna, and Luke; great-granddaughter, Kit; and sisters, Sara Bell, Lucy Davis, and Frances Barnett.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  A Celebration of Life Memorial Service is being planned for later in the spring.

Arlene Rose Solmos

Arlene Rose Solmos, 84, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Friday, February 24th, 2023. She was born on August 7th, 1938 in Fowler, Indiana to George and Leona Marcella (Etter) Cota. Arlene was a homemaker to her husband and six children.

 

She was a member of Holy Family Parish, St. Peter Church in La Porte and the Sagamore Parkway Association.

 

On November 11th, 1961, Arlene married Joseph Solmos who survives. She is also survived by her children, Michele (Phillip) Solmos-Zwickl of Boston, Massachusetts, Michael (Ronna) Solmos of Denver, Colorado, Colleen (Jim) Faulkner of Jefferson City, Missouri, Tricia (Bill) Turner of Indianapolis, Indiana, Joele (Richard) Jones of Melbourne, Florida, Kris (Christina) Solmos of Columbus, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and siblings, Miriam Thomson, Diane (Tom) Brown, and Tom (Patty) Cota.

Timothy M. Gielow

Timothy M. Gielow, 42, Trail Creek, Indiana, passed away Saturday, February 25th, 2023 at 4:48 pm in Franciscan Health - Michigan City.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, March 6th, 2023 at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN with Brother Shaun Gray officiating. He was born May 27th, 1980 in Michigan City, IN to Thomas and Marcia (Wizieck) Gielow.

 

Surviving are his father, Thomas Gielow of Port Charlotte, FL; daughter, Maggie Gielow of Trail Creek, IN; sister, Sarah (Michael) Shore of Port Charlotte, FL; nephew Aaron Parrett of Port Charlotte, FL; girlfriend, Crystal Hodges and her children Jordan Hodges and Jayden Hodges-Jones all of Trail Creek, IN; and many extended family, friends and loved ones.

 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Marcia Gielow; and nephew, Ryan McCleery.

 

Timothy was an operator foreman for the Michigan City Department of Water Works. He enjoyed golfing, playing pool and spending time with his daughter and family.
