Joyce  Barnes

Joyce  Barnes, 78, of Rolling Prairie, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at her home.

 

Joyce was born on March 21, 1942 in Chicago, IL, to Frank and Rose Marie (Vanek) Kebr.

 

On September 2, 1961 in Three Oaks, MI, she married Dale who survives. 

 

Also surviving are her children, Bonnie (Donald) Stoner of Rolling Prairie, Darlene Barnes of Rolling Prairie, Gary Barnes of South Bend, and Edward (Cindy) Barnes of Mill Creek; 10 grandchildren, Joshua (Rachel) Cummings of Crown Point, Adam (Ranai) Stoner of La Porte, Andrew Simmermeyer of La Porte, Lynnette (Benjamin) Thomas of Waldron, Tonya (Lee) Hansen of Champaign, IL, Capt. Nicholas Cummings, USAF of Oklahoma City, OK, Suzanne (John Kutscher) Simmermeyer of Rolling Prairie, Candice (Mark) Scott of Rolling Prairie, Kyle Barnes of Rolling Prairie, and Adriana (Michael Clizbe) Barnes of Sellerburg, IN; 11 great-grandchildren, Arianna and Caroline Thomas, Owen and Isabella Scott, Jacob Herma, Chase Duttlinger, Beau and Sloan Hansen, Noah Cummings, Waylon Barnes, and Jayda Simmermeyer; siblings, Richard Kebr of Burbank, IL and Mary (Frank) Horvath of Rolling Prairie; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Connie Cummings; and great-grandson, Levi Stoner.

 

Joyce worked as a bus driver for many years and was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church.  Earlier in her life, Joyce enjoyed sewing.  She enjoyed volunteering at the Share Foundation.

 

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date.

Della L. Stayback

Della L. Stayback, 80, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana passed away unexpectedly Sunday, August 30, 2020.

 

Della was born October 8, 1939, in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Louis and Rafka (Chamoun) Joseph.

 

On June 10, 1961, in Michigan City, Della married Lawrence J. “Casey” Stayback who survives along with two daughters, Jodi (Joseph) Pucel of Knox, Indiana and Melissa (Erik) Huhnke of Rolling Prairie, Indiana; a son, Lawrence J. (Christina) Stayback Jr. of Angola, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Andrew (Jackie) Stayback, Bradley (Lindsey) Stayback, Ryan (Taylor) Stayback, Robert Pucel, Rebecca Pucel, Christopher Huhnke, & Casey Marie Huhnke; a brother, Shomon Joseph Sr. of Yucaipa, California; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Della was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Rebecca Stayback; a son, John Stayback; sisters, Sarah Ackil, Mary R. Joseph, Raheal Chaffin; and a brother, Tony Joseph.

Della was a cafeteria cook with the New Prairie School system for 15 years. She was a member of St. John Kanty Catholic Church and the Altar & Rosary Society.

 

Due to the Covid-19 virus a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John Kanty Catholic Church will be celebrated at a later date.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.

James Richmond

James Richmond, 80, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, passed away Friday, August 28, 2020, at his home in Rolling Prairie, IN. surrounded by his family.


He was born July 17, 1940, in Michigan City, Indiana, the son of John W. Richmond and Anna (Adrion) Richmond. James was a member of the Harmon Gray American Legion Post 83, the VA of Mishawaka, the Eagles, and the IBEW Railroad. James was very fond and enjoyed karaoke and was better known as "Arizona."


He enjoyed fishing, camping with this family, coaching baseball, as he did with his grandkids. He was a fan of the WWE wrestling, anything to do with UFO's and Bigfoot Mysteries, and he was a stargazer.


On March 3, 1962, in La Porte, IN, he married Judith (Rosentreter) Richmond who survives.
He is also survived by his daughter, Christi Lyn (Larry) Richmond-Steinbeck of La Porte, IN; a brother, Levi (Tracy) Richmond of Mesa, AZ; three Grandchildren, Brittni Ann Marie Richmond-Steinbeck, Jessica Hall, and Larissa Steinbeck-Heath.


James "Arizona" was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Christopher Dean Richmond; a brother Ed Richmond, sisters, Nettie Koepke, Virginia Nauyokas, Agnes Lee, and Judy Raska-Scott.


Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends on Wednesday, Sept 3 from 4 -7 PM. A life celebration will be held at 7 PM at the funeral home with officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Cremation to follow.

Marian E. Hynek

Marian E. Hynek, 91, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Friday, August 28, 2020.

Marian was born May 3, 1929 in Chesterton, Indiana to the late Rossman and Gertrude (Schaff) Jensen.

 

On February 18, 1949, in La Porte, Marian married Raymond “Pete” Hynek who preceded her in death on July 29, 2013.

 

Marian worked as an office manager for Raymond P. Hynek Real Estate and she was the co-owner of Raymar Farms.  She was a very active member at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was a member of Sacred Heart Altar and Rosary Society.  She also was the secretary of Springfield Township 4-H Club.

 

Marian is survived by two sons, Thomas (Cindy) Hynek of Woodville, Texas and John (Terri) Hynek of Fort Wayne, Indiana; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; Pete; a son, Stephen Hynek; and two brothers, Roy Jensen and Donald Jensen.

 

Visitation will be from 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. 

 

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 201 Bach Street, La Porte, Indiana.  Reverend Ian Williams will officiate.  Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery.

Henry Stelter

Henry Stelter, 79, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Friday, August 14, 2020, at Golden Living Center in La Porte, IN.


He was born September 14, 1940 in Bridgman, Michigan, the son of Henry Stelter Sr.and Hulda (Krieger) Stelter.


Born and raised in Michigan, Henry was a carpenter in construction for most of his life.
He is survived by his brother, Richard Stelter of Bridgman, MI; sister Emily Cast; and a niece Judy
Spalding.


Henry was preceded in death by his parents.

Michael J. Miller

Michael J. Miller, 66 of La Porte, Indiana passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2020. He was born on October 13, 1953 in La Porte to the late Joseph T. and Ceycelia M. (Ellenwine) Miller. He was employed with New York Blower for 35 years. 

 

Mike is survived by sisters, Jo Herbst (Don) of Lisbon, North Dakota, Jane Slater (John) of La Porte; a brother, Dave Miller (Sherri) of Valparaiso, Indiana; nine nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

 

Mike was a 1972 graduate of New Prairie High School where he lettered in baseball. He was a volunteer with the Kankakee Township Fire Department, and a supporter of his nephew and nieces sporting events. He enjoyed going to the casino with his cousins Alvie and Kristin. He also enjoyed softball and bowling and was an avid Cubs fan.

 

A celebration of life will be held at 12 noon Thursday, September 10, 2020, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue La Porte, Indiana. Reverend Jerry Schweitzer will officiate. Family and friends may visit from 10 a.m. until 12 noon prior to the services.  Burial will follow at Rolling Prairie Cemetery.

Gary Lee McCleland Sr.

Gary Lee McCleland Sr., 67, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2020, at his daughter's residence in Rolling Prairie surrounded by his family.

 

He was born on October 14, 1952 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Farrell McCleland and Gladys (Troeger) McCleland.

 

First and foremost Gary's passion in life was his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The things he loved to do were, playing golf, metal detecting, collecting rocks, and was a history buff.

 

On October 14, 1992, in Niles, MI, he married Patricia (Simpson) McCleland who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his three daughters, Beth (Kip) Prast of Rolling Prairie, IN, JoedeCovyeou of Niles, MI, Raychel (Thomas) Bogaert of La Porte, IN; four sons, James (Kristin) McCleland of Tempe, AZ, Gary (Michelle) McCleland of Noblesville, IN, Seth (Tricia) McCleland of Noblesville, IN, Richard (Candy) Whitmire of Niles, MI; two brothers, Robert (Connie) McCleland, Michael (Paula) McCleland; sister, Karen (Bennie) Rison; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James McCleland.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Monday, August 31 from 9:30 AM until service time at 11 am.  A life celebration will be held at 11 am (CST), at the funeral home with Kyle McClelandofficiating.  A graveside service will then be held at 2 PM (EST) at Oakridge Cemetery in Buchanan, MI.

Margaret "Marge" E. Kollar

Margaret "Marge" E. Kollar, 88, of La Porte, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at Hamilton Communities.

 

Marge was born on February 17, 1932 in South Bend, IN, to Cyril T. and Bernice (Redpath) Herthog.

 

On May 24, 1952, in South Bend, IN, she married Otto G. who preceded her in death.  Surviving Marge are her daughter, Karen (Ric) Graf of La Porte; 5 grandchildren Carrie (John) Stalbaum of La Porte, Heather (Robert) French of Valparaiso, Tara (Jason) Payton of La Porte, Tim (Sharie) Graf of Jacksonville, FL and Patrick (Amber) Graf of Mishawaka; 15 great-grandchildren; 1 great, great-grandchild; brother, Cyril Herthog, Jr.; special friends, Robert (Nancy) McVay of La Porte; as well as a niece and nephew.

 

She was preceded by her parents; son, William Kollar; sister, Alice "Gloria" Herthog; and grandson, Brandon Scott Kollar.

 

Marge worked many years for American Home Foods. She was a member of Eastern Star Masonic Lodge Excelsior 41. 

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Roger Ash officiating.  Cremation will follow the service.  Burial will take place at a later date at Patton Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until the time of the service on Sunday at the funeral home.

Joyce Louise Schroeder

Joyce Louise Schroeder, 84, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2020, at La Porte Hospital and Health Services.

 

Joyce was born on December 17, 1935, in Freeport, MI, to William and Arvilla (Osborn) Boughner.

 

On October 16, 1954, in New Buffalo, MI she married Henry, who preceded her in death.  Surviving Joyce are her daughter, Debra Schroeder of La Porte, and many nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; 6 brothers, Mac, Bob, Bill, Wes, Jim and Fritz; and 2 sisters, Pat and Helen. 

 

Joyce was a homemaker.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.  Joyce enjoyed traveling and mothering people.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  A private family service has taken place.

Barry Vann Pittman

Barry Vann Pittman, 59, of La Porte, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2020, at Aperion Care Arbors at Michigan City.

 

Barry was born on February 2, 1961, in Ardmore, TN, to "Jack" Van Buren and Betty J. (Sprouse) Pittman.

 

Surviving Barry are his son, Josiah (Amy Bealor) Pittman of La Porte; siblings, Garry Robison, Sherry (Mike) Spencer, Vickie (Jimmy) Reeder, Diane (Mike) Phillips, and Rick (Cammy) Pittman, all of La Porte; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded by his parents.

 

Barry was an extruder operator for many years.  He enjoyed Alabama Crimson Tide football, long hair, The Rolling Stones, and back scratches.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2020, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Roger Ash officiating.  Burial will follow at Patton Cemetery.

Lisa M. Pinkstaff

Lisa M. Pinkstaff, 52, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Friday, August 21, 2020, at La Porte Hospital in La Porte, IN.

 

She was born September 20, 1967, in Gary, Indiana, the daughter of Alan B. Pinkstaff and Linda (Larzelere) Pinkstaff.

 

Lisa was a member of the Grace Baptist Church of La Porte, IN.  She was Head of Music Ministry at her church, involved with the Women's Bible Study Group, the Youth Group, and the AWANA for Kid's. She was gifted at playing the piano and the guitar. For 24 years she was the Manager of Surgical Services at La Porte Hospital. Lisa loved the work she did as well as her cats Primrose and Pierson.

 

Lisa is survived by her mother, Linda Pinkstaff; a brother, Bruce A. (Marisa) Pinkstaff; niece, Morgan Pinkstaff; and nephew, Mason Pinkstaff; and a half brother and sister; and a special family friend Anita Phillips.

 

Lisa was preceded in death by her father Alan B. Pinkstaff.

David Allen Voltz

David Allen Voltz, 58, of La Porte, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2020.

 

David was born on April 18, 1962, in Michigan City, IN, to Kenneth Voltz and Leanita "Skeeter" (Turner) Scott.

 

Surviving David are his children, Terry Voltz of Chicago and Amber Voltz of Michigan City; mother, Leanita "Skeeter" Scott; siblings, Dale Scott of La Porte, Debra Staples of Three Oaks, MI, Deann (Joe) Toth of Gulf Shores, AL, and Patrick Voltz of Michigan City; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his father.

 

David was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in both Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom.  He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves and U.S. National Guard.  David was a truck driver for many years.  He enjoyed working on cars and discussing anything military-related.

 

A Celebration of Life Service with Full Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2020, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Jay Loucks officiating.  Cremation will follow the service.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 4 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Ruth S. Miller

Ruth S. Miller, 94, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2020.

 

Ruth was born January 3, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois to the late Frank and Bessie (Fee) Schmich.

On April 12, 1947, Ruth married John J. “Jack” Miller who preceded her in death on April 15, 1987.

Ruth retired from the La Porte County Auditor’s office where she was a clerk.  She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, St. Peter Joan of Ark Circle, and Beta Theta Tau Sorority.  Ruth also enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, crocheting, oil painting, and sewing. 

 

Ruth is survived by her three sons, Patrick Miller of South Bend, Indiana, James (Angie) Miller of La Porte, Indiana and Bob Miller of La Porte, Indiana; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Norene Quartuccio of La Porte;  and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; and a brother, Robert Schmich.

 

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 22, 2020, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 1101 Michigan Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.  Reverend Nate Edquist will officiate.  Cremation has taken place. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery.

Ronda Jean Pearish

Ronda Jean Pearish, 73, of Knifley, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, August 15, 2020, at the Women's and Children's Hospital of St. Matthews in Louisville, KY.


She was born January 13, 1947, in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of John Shoupe and Mildred (Foster) Shoup-Groves.


On Oct 9, 1974, in La Porte, IN, she married Lawrence Pearish who preceded her in death.
Ronda was involved with The Fellowship of Christians and Jews, and the Pat Robertson 700 Club. She was a Christian who enjoyed reading her bible and being involved in bible study. She loved cooking but her passion in life was her love for her family.


She is survived by her son, Paul (Candace) Pearish of Campbellsville, KY; two daughters, Marcie Martin, and Shannon (Daniel) Martin; eight grandchildren, Nathaniel Martin, Autumn Burton, Chase Martin, Kyle Martin, Kody Martin, Kayla Martin, Alexis Pearish, Korissa Pearish; and 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.


Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Friday, August 21 from Noon until service time at 1 pm. A life celebration will be held at the funeral home at 1 pm with Pastor Hoffman of the Apostolic Church officiating. Interment will follow at the Rolling Prairie Cemetery.

William "Bill" C. Hyde

William "Bill" C. Hyde, 93, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2020, at Hamilton Grove, New Carlisle, IN. 

   

Bill was born in Gary, IN, on April 25, 1927, to Frank and Aletha (Quinn) Hyde. 

 

On September 1, 1951, Bill married Marcella Yurchak, who preceded him in death.

 

On February 17, 2003, he married Elaine Quirk, who survives. Also surviving are his daughters, Peggy (Dave) Dew of La Porte, Susan (Tim) Topa of Sebring, FL, Amy (Tom) Campbell of Melbourne, FL, and Pam (Cory) Dunn of Albany, OR; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Pat Kepchar of Highland, IN; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition, he is survived by Elaine's family of whom he had grown very fond and were of much support.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; son, William Quinn Hyde; and great-granddaughter, Jasmine Morris.

 

A World War II veteran, Bill proudly served his country in the US Navy.  He loved the dairy business, having worked many years for Bowman Dairy in Gary, Lenick's Dairy in La Porte, and retired as a Sales Manager from Scholl Dairy in Michigan City.  Bill was an avid reader, but his passion was baseball, particularly Chicago Cubs baseball.  Over the years, Bill coached many different leagues of youth baseball.  He also was passionate about and a lifelong fan of  Notre Dame football. 

 

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, at St. Peter's Catholic Church.  Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery where Full Military Honors will be presented.

 

Due to the recent Governor's Order, anyone attending the service is required to wear a mask.

Geraldine Marie Guard

Geraldine Marie Guard, 64, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2020 at her home.

 

Geraldine was born on April 3, 1956, in Chicago, IL, to James and Myrtle (Graham) Dempsey.

 

Surviving Geraldine are her children, David (Kristen Schroeder) Guard, Matthew Guard, and Wendy (Kevin) Dolson, all of Michigan City; 6 grandchildren, Ayden Schroeder, Alice Guard, Victoria Guard, Sean Holloway, Kendra Dolson, and Oliver Dolson; siblings, James (Louise) Dempsey and Judith Lipe; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Daniel Guard; and siblings, John J. Dempsey and Cleo Haggard.

 

Geraldine was a bus driver for many years for Michigan City School District.  She enjoyed reading and the Chicago Bears.

 

The family wishes to express a special thank you to Geraldine's niece, Desiree (Rusty) Hoaglan for their special love and care for Geraldine.

Donald "Don" J. Dolezal

On Monday, August 10, 2020, Donald "Don" J. Dolezal lost his battle to Pancreatic Cancer.

 

Don was born on November 13, 1946, in the Metropolitan Area of Chicago, IL.  He was raised in La Porte, IN by his loving parents, Donald and Grace Dolezal.

 

Don received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Marquette University.  He was a teacher for the Chicago Public School District for 25 years.  In addition, he was a member of the Chicago Board of Education and a coach for girls volleyball, basketball, and tennis.  Although he never married or had children of his own, Don dedicated himself to educating underprivileged youth in Chicago. 

 

Don was a passionate man who loved his family, friends, Lake Michigan, the Chicago White Sox, and engaging in spirited conversations with ANYONE.  Upon retiring, Don lived in Michigan City, IN on his boat, and worked for the Michigan City Port Authority.  He spent his winters in Bradenton, FL with his friends.  Don will be missed by all those who loved him.

 

Don is survived by his sisters, Eleanor Hopper and Dona G. Ward.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  A private family service will take place at a later date.  Services for friends and those who wish to pay tribute to Don will be held at a later date, which will be posted on his Facebook page.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Children First Fund, The Chicago Public Schools Foundation, 42 W. Madison Street, Chicago, IL  60602.

Cali Rose Kinsey

Cali Rose Kinsey, 7, of La Porte, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

 

Cali was born on June 20, 2013 in La Porte, IN, to Bobby Lagene Kinsey.

 

Surviving Cali are her father, Bobby Kinsey; stepmother, Rachel Rozinski; siblings, Chelsea, Skyler and "J Boy" Kinsey; grandmas, Teresa Kinsey, Roseabella Cochran, and Nancy Kinney; Nonnie, Boots Mains; Paw Paw, Kenneth Cochran; Papa, William Rozinski; step-grandma, Missy; aunt, Brit Brat; step-aunt, Angel ; and numerous friends.

 

She was preceded by her Grandma Lilly.

 

Cali loved cheeseburgers, movie night, pigs, unicorns, rainbows, and the color pink.  Most importantly, she loved her Daddy.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2020, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Sarah Samson officiating.  Burial will follow at Patton Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 4 - 8 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2020, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Jerry B. Keim

Jerry B. Keim, 83, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 14, 2020.

 

Jerry was born on April 22, 1937, in South Bend, IN, to Charles T. and Sue (Roush) Keim.  He attended La Porte High School and graduated in 1955.  Jerry served his country in the US Navy. 

 

On June 28, 1958, at Bethany Lutheran Church in La Porte, he married Judy Hibner who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Jeffery Keim, Brian Keim and Karen (Steve) deBruyn; 7 grandchildren, Ryan Keim, Alex (Kim) Keim, Sarah (Joey) Lupresto, Nick deBruyn, Stephen (Norma) deBruyn, Sean deBruyn, and Madison Leslie; 3 great-grandchildren, Charlotte Lupresto, Dylan and Dalton deBruyn; sisters, Marcia (Duane) Fritzen and Judy Jorgenson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded by his parents and granddaughter, Amanda Marie Keim.

 

Jerry started his career at Inland Steel, owned and operated Keim Buffet Restaurant & Catering Service, worked in construction and operated The Goods Antiques.  Before retirement, Jerry worked as a warehouseman at La Porte Community Schools.

 

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and Phi Delta Kappa.  Jerry was a kind and fun-loving person who was always ready to help family and friends.  He dearly loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. 

 

A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2020, at Carmel Cemetery with Pastor Dennis Meyer officiating.  Full Military Honors will be held.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 12 - 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  A procession to Carmel Cemetery will follow at approximately 2 p.m.

Lee Joseph Wuthrich

Lee Joseph Wuthrich, 58, of Walkerton, Indiana passed away Thursday, August 13, 2020.

 

Lee was born on October 24, 1961 in Chicago, Illinois to Leroy Joseph and Marge (Curran) Shoemaker.

 

Lee was a foreman with the La Porte County Highway Department for many years.

 

Lee is survived by his father, Leroy; his children, Jennifer Ann Wuthrich of South Bend, Indiana, Michael Lee Wuthrich of Bass Lake, Indiana, and Stephanie Marie Wuthrich of La Porte, Indiana; siblings, Tim Mortenson, Karen Duvall, Sue Itter, Steve Bell, and Kristie Garner.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Marge; and sisters, Carolyn Miles, Sharon Eckart, and Patty Stout-Eckart.

Earl A. Kievert

Earl A. Kievert, 89, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Monday, August 10, 2020, at Miller's Health and Rehab, La Porte.

 

He was born April 11, 1931, in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Leo and Louise (Wilhelm) Kievert. On November 11, 1961, in La Porte, Earl married his wife of 58 years, Marlene HeidenKievert, who survives.

 

He is also survived by his two sons, Robert (Sally) Kievert of Lemont, IL, Rick (Pam) Kievert of La Porte, IN; three grandchildren, Nate Kievert of Phoenix, AZ, Zak Kievert of Ann Arbor, MI, and Jennifer Kievert, who is currently in college in Ft. Wayne,  and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Augusta. 

 

Earl served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1955.  A long-standing member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in La Porte, he worked for the U.S. Post Office until his retirement.  After retirement, Earl delivered flowers for Angelo Bernacchi Greenhouses and Thode Floral. Earl trained and drove harness horses for over 40 years, known in the industry as one of the best for young trotters. In addition, Earl was on the board and served as director of the La Porte County Fair for many years.   He was a member of the American Legion Hamon Gray Post 83 and the Polish Falcons, La Porte, where he served as a bartender.  Earl was a Chicago Cubs fan, enjoyed doing word search puzzles and reading mystery novels, especially by James Patterson.  He truly loved his family, his grandkids, and his grand dogs!

 

 Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN.  A private interment of cremated remains will take place in Pine Lake Cemetery, with a Celebration of Life announced at a later date.

Robert Lee Wilson

Robert Lee Wilson, 76, of Kingsford Heights, Indiana passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2020.

 

Robert was born July 19, 1944, in La Porte, Indiana to the late George and Betty (Wilhelm) Wilson.

Robert worked at Roll Coater and was a butcher for 20 years. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of American Legion Post 434 in Kingsford Heights, and he loved to hunt, fish, and plant his acre garden.

 

On January 8, 1966, Robert married Joyce Carol Upp who survives. He is also survived by a son, John Wilson of Amite City, Louisiana; daughter, Juli (Rick) Boisvert of North Judson, Indiana; grandchildren, Corey (Christine) Hill, Todd (Ashley) Hill, Gaston Combs, Phillip (Ashley) Alexander, Courtney Pinks, Nathan Tyler (Lindsay) Wilson; 17 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Norma (Don) Pennington of La Porte, Indiana, George Wilson of Plymouth, Indiana and Mike (Cindy) Lower of La Porte, Indiana.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Larry Wilson, Jerry Wilson, and Roger Lower.

Joseph Keyak Jr.

Joseph Keyak Jr., 73, of Walkerton, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, August 11, 2020.

 

Joseph was born February 15, 1947, in Gary, Indiana to the late Joseph Sr. and Mary (Lamitz) Keyak.

 

Joseph was the co-owner of Triangle Steel in Gary, Indiana with his brother, Michael.  He was a 1969 graduate of Purdue University and a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.  He was an avid Chicago and Purdue sports fan, loved animals, puzzles, poker, and collecting sports memorabilia. Most of all he loved his three daughters and grandchildren.

 

Joseph is survived by his children, Meredith (David) Chlupacek of Walkerton, Indiana, Christina Lee of South Bend, Indiana, and Joey (Eric) Braden of Valparaiso, Indiana; grandchildren, Edie Chlupacek, Vincent Chlupacek, Carson Braden; step-grandchildren, Chase, Trevor and Gavin Braden; sisters, Judith Keyak of South Pasadena, Florida, and Barbara Livingston of Clearwater, Florida; Sister-in-law, Kathryn Keyak; nieces, Lori Davis, Lisa Livingston; and nephew, Michael Keyak Jr.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Michael Keyak Sr.

Everett "Mike" Michael Binder

Everett "Mike" Michael Binder, 69, of La Porte, passed away on Monday, August 10, 2020 at La Porte Hospital and Health Services after a long series of health issues. 

   

Mike was born in La Porte, IN, on May 20, 1951, to Everett Franklin and Marguerite (Skinner) Binder. 

 

Surviving Mike are his son Beau (Cassidy) Binder of La Porte; 3 grandchildren, Todd, Blake, and Allie Binder of La Porte; sister, Peggy (Don) Constance of La Porte; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Barbara Peacock; and sister, Ginger Dittewiler.

 

Mike was a Supervisor for many years at NIPSCO.  He enjoyed baseball and was a past La Porte High School Slicer player.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2020 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Roger Ash officiating.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.  Cremation will follow the service. Interment will take place at a later date.

Jerry L. Jones

Jerry L. Jones, 85,  Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Monday, August 10, 2020, at 12:10 am in his home.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 15, 2020, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana with Rev. Kevin Huber officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Friday and from 10:00 am - 11:00 am Saturday at the funeral chapel.

He was born September 28, 1934, in Michigan City, IN to the late Clark and Jola (Hester) Jones. On January 14, 1956, in LaPorte, IN he married Barbara A. Kashmer who survives in Michigan City, IN.

Also surviving are four daughters, Jeri Ann (Eldon) Juby of Michigan City, IN, Pam (Rick) Voss of Michigan City, IN, Judy (Bill) Steiner of Livingston, TX and Jennifer (Daniel) Buckner of Bell Buckle, TN; son, Mark (Kathy) Jones of Bull Shoals, AR; eleven grandchildren, Amanda (Doug) Juby, Claire (Nick Krause) Juby, Ryan (Lana) Voss, Scott (Christy) Voss, Corey Voss, Katy (Brian) Shea, Kelsey Steiner, Abby (Greg) Steiner, Allison (Harley) Rowell, Jerrod Buckner and Max Buckner; and five great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Kramer, Leo Kramer, Clark Voss, Simon Voss and Felix Voss.

He was also preceded in death by his grandson, Christopher Juby; and five sisters and four brothers.

Jerry retired as a service engineer at General Electric. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Phi Delta Fraternity Gamma Lambda Chapter, Michigan City Senior Center, and the Elk's Lodge 432 where he was a Past Exalted Ruler and District Deputy. He was a former member of the Michigan City Exchange Club and was an avid Elston Red Devils fan. For he's a jolly good fellow, which nobody can deny.

 

Due to COVID 19 concerns; his services will now be private and a Celebration of Life announced at a later date.

Harvey V. Adams Sr., 86, of La Porte, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2020.

 

Harvey was born on December 26, 1933, to Goldie (Wolf) and Solomon H. Adams.

 

Harvey served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.  He owned Adams and Sons Roofing.

 

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents and his son, William Lee Adams.

Vega Iantria

Vega Iantria, 104, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Hamilton Grove in New Carlisle, Indiana.

 

She was born on November 29, 1915 in Smaland, Sweden, the daughter of Carl D and Sigrid L (Linden) Gustafson.  With her parents, she came to America in 1924 and settled in Chicago. Vega married Anthony L. Iantria on December 1, 1940, in Chicago.

 

Vega and Tony lived for many years in the Fish Lake and La Porte area.  She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church for more than 50 years where she taught Sunday School and one of the longest Bible Study Classes at the church.  She was active in many church organizations as well as being an Administrative Assistant for the La Porte County Library.

 

She is survived by her son, Constantine (Virginia) Iantria of South Bend; two daughters, Linnea Iantria of Springfield, Missouri and Jeanne (Jim) Kolar of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Cindy (Christian) Brickman, Michael (Angie) Iantria, Christina (Mike) Brinker, two great-grandchildren Ashley and Megan, and one great-great-grandchild, Tate.

 

Vega was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Anthony; two brothers, Carl and Hugh Gustafson.

Reverend Nellie M. Vardaman

The Reverend Nellie M. Vardaman, 74, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Friday, August 7, 2020, at La Porte Hospital.

 

She was born July 26, 1946, in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Vernon R and Eleanora (Vermilyer) Vardaman.

 

Nellie served as the Pastor of the First Spiritual Church of Prayer in South Bend for many years and continued as Pastor during Covid-19, streaming services on-line.  She was a member of the Moose Lodge Aux, La Porte VFW Aux, and The Independent Spiritual Association.

She had many friends and cousins who cared for her during her life, including Caregiver, John Hammond.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Friday, August 14 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.  A Celebration of The Reverend Vardaman's Life will follow at 5:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home, with The Reverend Phillip Falcone, Nellie's Associate Pastor, officiating.  Cremation will take place.

Hilda M. Ohime

Hilda M. Ohime, 89, of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2020, at Brentwood of La Porte.

 

She was born on October 16, 1930, in Michigan City, Indiana, the daughter of William and Mary (Liscomb) Menke.

 

On January 22, 1950, in La Porte, she married William Ohime who preceded her in death.

A lifelong resident of the area, Hilda worked for Scott Foresman Co. until her retirement in 1993. She was a volunteer "Candy Striper" at the hospital for many years, enjoyed doing puzzles, crosswords, solving things, and bowling. But her passion in life was her family. She truly enjoyed her children, grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren.

 

She is survived by her son, Michael (Debra Dhoore) Ohime of LaPorte; daughter, Theresa (Manuel "Bub") Spencer of La Porte; four grandchildren, Matthew (Kendra) Ohime, William (Rachele) Spencer, Sommer (John) Lewis, and Molly (Vester) Lemons as well as 13 great-grandchildren.

 

Along with her husband, Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Helen Haugen and Frieda Timm; brothers, William and Donald Menke, and a great-grandchild.

Robert "Bob" L. Marker

Robert "Bob" L. Marker, 69, of La Porte, passed away from this life to his eternal heavenly home on Thursday, August 6, 2020, at Franciscan Health, in Crown Point following complications from lung surgery.

 

Bob was born on September 9, 1950, in La Porte to Leonard P. and Betty L. (Reiter) Marker.

 

After graduating from La Porte High School in 1968, Bob became an Operator Plasters and Cement Mason of Local 692 Area 438 and worked as a cement finisher for over thirty years.

 

Bob was a dedicated member of La Porte Missionary Church, volunteered for First Steps of La Porte, served as an advocate for Baptist Children's Home, received training in Biblical counseling, and held regular Bible studies in his home.  He enjoyed fishing, riding his motorcycle, playing cards, watching the Bears and the Slicers, and spending time with his family and church family.  For those who knew him, he was a dependable and faithful friend.  Although he had several ongoing health issues, Bob never complained and bore his chronic pain bravely with hope.  For many, Bob was a great example of what it looks like to follow Jesus; cheerful, helpful, hopeful, and loving.  He always looked for ways to share the life-changing grace of God through Jesus Christ.

 

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Kay Hynek and Jackie Kray; brother, Rick Marker; nephew, Jeff Kray; and lifelong friend, Jeannine Bowell.

 

He is survived by the close family friendship of Janalee (Shawn) Brown and their children, Samuel, Luke, Anna (Luke) Brechner, Jael, and Susanna and Ryan (Sharmion) Bowell and their children, Cameron, Austin, Madeline, and Aidan.  He leaves behind 2 brothers-in-law, Stan Hynek and Denny Kray; 1 sister-in-law, Liz Laramie; several nieces and nephews, Debbie (John) Mott, Eddie (Jennifer) Hynek, Doug (Kelly) Hynek, Brian (Rebecca) Kray, Misty (Will-fiance) Marker, Mindy (Noble) Smith, Jimmy Marker, and Aaron (Sherry) Banic; as well as several great-nieces and nephews.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2020, at La Porte Missionary Church with Pastors Steve and Carl Galloway officiating.  Burial will follow at Door Village Cemetery in La Porte.

Christopher Lee Schultz

Christopher Lee Schultz, 61, of La Porte, died peacefully at his home Saturday, August 1, 2020, after a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his friends and family at his living wake and celebration of life, laughter, and music.

 

Thank you to all that shared their music and love to walk Chris home. Chris found joy in his family and creating music and sharing his art. He will be missed by many.

 

On July 31, 1959, in La Porte, Indiana, he was born to Donald and Janice (Hammonds) Schultz.

 

On November 22, 2001, in La Porte, Indiana, he married Claudia (Young) Schultz, who survives.

 

Also surviving are Christopher’s three children, Amanda Craig, Samantha, and Jamie Schultz all of St. Joseph, MI; Christopher’s three grandchildren, Miles, Margo, and Max; one brother, Robin (Joyce) Schultz of La Porte; he also shared Claudia’s family, Claudia’s children, Monica (Don) Francis, Coco (Erik) Penfold and Anna (Steve O’Kray) Ortiz all of La Porte; Claudia’s grandchildren, Cody, Nigel, Eva, Lilly, Nadia, Jaxson, Josie and Donovan; and Claudia’s great-grandchildren, Vincent, Azealea, Silas, Scarlett, Rosalie, and Selina.

 

Preceding in death were his parents; one sister, Melody Schultz; and one grandchild, Ayden Penfold.

Myrva A. Hobbs, 87, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at her home, surrounded by her family.

 

Myrva was born on March 3, 1933 in East Chicago, IN, to George and Anne Sevulka.

 

On January 11, 1951 in Gary, IN she married James D. Hobbs, who preceded her in death.  Surviving Myrva are her children, Nancy Rusnak of Miller Beach, Susan Williams of Valparaiso, James (Merle) Hobbs of New Carlisle, Chuck (Lisa) Hobbs of La Porte, Laurie (Mark) Pleva of Michiana Shores, Kathy (Mark Murphy) Hobbs of South Bend, and Donna Muchesko, who was like family; 11 grandchildren, Jim (Anda) Rusnak of Colorado Springs, CO, Steve Rusnak of Valparaiso, Amy Perry of Valparaiso, Erin (Jack) Lively of Valparaiso, Renee (Ryan) McKinnon of Valparaiso, Michelle (Jim Shellito) Hobbs of Michigan City, James (Tracy) Hobbs of Valparaiso, Jennifer (Tom) Cooper of Cleveland, OH, Michael (Lindsay) Vaiceliunas of Colorado Springs, CO, Steven Pleva of Michiana Shores and Megan Pleva of Michigan City; 17 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Alex, Nicholas, Lucas, Micah, Cameron, Natalie, James, Maggie, Landon, Elliott, AJ, Benny, Julianne, Sophia, Michael, and Lily; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

 

Myrva was a homemaker, who enjoyed art.  She took classes at the Art Institute while in high school and continued doing oil paintings all her life.  Myrva enjoyed spending time with her family, going antiquing, and meeting family and friends for lunch.  She loved dogs and watching Notre Dame and Chicago Bears football.  Myrva was a member and past President of the Ladies Auxiliary at Methodist Hospital in Gary, IN.

 

A private family celebration has been held.  Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Karen S. Drake

Karen S. Drake, 62, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Sunday, August 2, 2020, at La Porte Hospital.

 

She was born June 3, 1958, in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Daniel and Jo Carolyn (Gower) Drake.

 

Karen was a lifelong resident of La Porte, and a member of the Agape Church here. Most recently a customer service representative for Kohl's, she was also the owner of HairForce Salon for 10 years. Karen enjoyed gardening and loved taking pictures. Her true love in life was her family, especially her nieces and nephews. 

 

Preceded in death by her mother on August 1, 2013, Karen is survived by her father Daniel Drake of  La Porte; her sister, Pam (Bobby) Schoch of Rolling Praire; brother, Danny (Angie) Drake of La Porte; aunts, Mary Kay Barkow and Dortha Sue Gower both of La Porte; her beloved nieces and nephews, Ashley (Matt) Nelson of La Porte, Lindsey Schoch of Knox, Kyle Schoch of La Porte, Sarah Drake of La Porte, Taylor Drake of La Porte, Josh (Emily) Kayser of La Porte,  Zach (Taneesha) Kayser of Texas, Andrew Kayser of La Porte, and several great-nieces and nephews. 

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to noon Thursday, August 6  at the Agape Christian Church, 16011 "I" Street, La Porte, IN.  A life celebration will be held at 12 NOON at the church with Ben Crostreet, officiating.  Interment will follow at the Pine Lake Cemetery.

Lyle W. Bentley

Lyle W. Bentley, 91, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Saturday, August 1, 2020, at 6:54 pm in his home.

A celebration of life service will be held at 5:00 pm, Saturday, August 8, 2020, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Saturday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.

He was born December 11, 1928, in Michigan City, IN to the late Albert and Mabel (Ryckman) Bentley. On April 14, 1951, in Waterford, IN he married Alberta Heisler who preceded him on November 17, 2012.

Surviving are daughter, Linda (Anthony) Keogh of Dublin, Ireland; son, David (Deanna) Bentley of Rosemount, MN; four Grandchildren, Abbey (Gene) Chambers of Michigan City, IN, Bryan (Amy) Bentley of Lakeville, MN, Joseph Bentley of Rosemount, MN and Mitchell (Chelsea) Nieland of Burnsville, MN; seven Great-Grandchildren, Brooklyn Chambers, Benson Chambers, Madelynn Nieland, Raiden Nieland, Kyla Bentley, Kase Bentley, and Claire Bentley; and his sister, Betty Ungrait of Indiana.

He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Ralph Bentley and Robert Bentley.

Lyle retired after 70 years as a plumber with the U.A. Plumbers Local 597 and was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, and the outdoors.

Robert C. McGinnis

Mr. Robert C. McGinnis, 81, of La Porte, passed away on Friday, July 31, 2020, at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

 

Robert was born on May 10, 1939, in Michigan City, IN, to Joseph and Alice (Peiffer) McGinnis.

 

On July 1, 1960, in La Porte, IN, he married Patricia K. Baity who survives.  Also surviving are one daughter, Katherine (Glen) Todd and one son, Michael (Stacy) McGinnis, both of La Porte; 12 grandchildren, Elizabeth Bline of Goshen, Jeffrey (Amanda) Bline of Goshen, Stephanie Bline of Elkhart, Andrew Todd of La Porte, Angela (Dane) Lowry of La Porte, Aimee Todd of La Porte, Allison (Paul) Sanford of Elkhart, Austin Todd of La Porte, Pierceton (Parker) McGinnis of La Porte, Victorian McGinnis of La Porte, Quinton McGinnis of La Porte, and Keegan McGinnis of La Porte; four great-grandchildren, Juniper Dial, Roxy Bline, and Jack and Gabriella Lowry; and two brothers, Earl (Carol) McGinnis of Michigan City and Lawrence (Marge) McGinnis of New Buffalo, MI.

 

Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter, Debra Bline; sister, Edna Poor; and three brothers, Joseph, Jack, and Charles.

 

Robert proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps.  He worked at Dwyer Products in Michigan City and Wirekraft in Rolling Prairie.  Robert loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, which he taught his family to do also.  He taught Sunday School and Youth Group was a Sunday School superintendent, was involved with Gideons, and was a hospital chaplain.  Robert was an avid member of the Wal-Mart Coffee Club and loved to socialize.  He, along with his family, would like to thank all the aides from Comfort Keepers and Help At Home for the many services they provided over the last several years.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2020, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor J. Kenneth Grace, of La Porte Assembly of God, officiating.  Burial with full military honors will follow at Patton Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 4 - 8 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2020, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.  Per the CDC and Gov. Holcomb, please follow the guidelines set forth, including facial masks which are required for all attending the visitation and/or service.

Sandra Ann Parish (Sandi), 77, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Friday, July 31, 2020 at 8:26 pm in LaPorte Hospital, LaPorte, IN.

Private family services will be conducted. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

She was born December 6, 1942, in Monterey, CA to the late Harry and Jacqueline (Kohanek) Holder.

Surviving are a daughter, Evonne (Jeffrey) Higdon of Lakeville, IN; four sons, Albert Parish of Michigan City, IN, Edward (Kisha) Parish of South Bend, IN, Kenneth Parish of Michigan City, IN and Harry Parish of Michigan City, IN; 6 grandchildren Jeffrey Higdon II, Lashanda Higdon, Tyler Parish, Kenny Parish Jr., Byran Parish, Stephanie Parish, and Tyler Parish; 2 great-grandchildren Jeffrey Higdon III and Jordan Higdon; two brothers, Walter Haugen of Kent, WA and Gerald Haugen of Arizona.

Sandra had worked as a certified nurse's assistant. She enjoyed watching game shows, spending time with her friend, and until her illness enjoyed going to the casino.
