A selfless, yet private soul, Marilyn chose not to burden others with knowledge of her condition, she has left many unaware of her 16-month courageous battle against the torment of terminal cancer. In accordance with Marilyn’s wishes, a private inurnment of her cremains will ensue in the near future in the family plot situated at Pine Grove Cemetery in New Buffalo, Michigan, with final arrangements being executed by Ott Haverstock Funeral Chapel. A celebration of Marilyn’s life and essence will be announced in the upcoming late Spring.

A 1976 graduate of New Buffalo High School, Marilyn further earned a degree from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan in 1979. Immediately thereafter, she became the Official Verbatim Court Reporter in La Porte Superior Court No. 4 until 1983 when she assumed the role of Official Court Reporter for La Porte Superior Court No. 2 for the next 11 years. During those 15 years, she served under presiding judges Keppen, Harner, and King.

In 1995 she left government employment to form the firm of Marilyn M. Jones and Associates, Ltd. Court Reporters and Videographers, which she ran until just days prior to her passing. During her 45-year career, she further earned an associate degree as a paralegal from Indiana University South Bend, achieved licensed certification as a CSR and RPR Court Reporter as well as recognition as a professional videographer. In addition to membership in various national and multiple state court reporting associations, Marilyn was elected and served three terms as President of the Indiana Court Reporters Association.

Early in her career, Marilyn became one of the first court reporters in northern Indiana to pioneer the use of and become certified in CAT (Computer Aided Transcription). As a result, she was repeatedly called upon to report and transcribe complicated state and federal trials such as capital murder cases which required real-time reporting and daily copy transcription. A sampling of her regular clients included the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Chemical Safety Board, various U.S. Congressional field hearings, as well as numerous municipalities, and corporations in northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan.

In addition, Marilyn placed under oath and reported testimony by numerous noted individuals such as Donald Trump, Muhammed Ali, Congressmen, and famous performing artists.

The service she was most humbled by, and proud to often offer, was the pro bono stenography and transcription service for aging military veterans from both World Wars. Her work product will forever memorialize the sacrifice and contributions of those patriots for a multitude of family members and veteran organizations.
In her spare time, Marilyn was an accomplished photographer, jewelry designer, and artist/crafter in multiple mediums. She was an ardent line dancer throughout the 80’s and 90’s. She relished the opportunity to transform, by elaborate costume and make-up, into the Purple Good Witch every Halloween for the Washington Park Zoo’s Trick or Treat festivities. By spousal osmosis, she became an avid Purdue football and basketball fanatic, including chauffeuring Coach Gene Keady whenever he came to town. She and Atley traveled extensively, achieving notoriety as having journeyed on every Amtrak route in the country at least once.

For over 25 years Marilyn and Atley together most enjoyed being Santa and Mrs. Claus for thousands of children in northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan. Most notably, for at least ten years, always made appearances in Michigan City’s Christmas Parade followed by welcoming all believers to the downtown Santa House in the weeks preceding Christmas.

In addition to her husband and immediate family, Marilyn also leaves an unfathomable void in the hearts of special friends Becky Lempa and William Richey, as well as faithful feline companions Jonesy and Gracie.

In lieu of flowers or gifts please make any desired donations in Marilyn’s honor to either the La Porte County Small Animal Shelter, 2855 West State Road 2, La Porte, IN 46350, or the Michigan City Zoological Society, P.O. Box 315, Michigan City, IN 46360.

As time marches on carrying her further from us all, Marilyn will always beseech us:
“Do not stand at the location of my mortal remains and weep, for I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sun shining on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain.”

Matthew Mercier

Matthew Mercier, 62, of Lansing, Illinois passed away Wednesday, April 10th, 2024. Matt was born on July 28th, 1961, in Chicago, Illinois, to his parents Ray and Dolores Mercier. Matt spent his life in the South Suburbs of Chicago. His early life was spent in Roseland; at the age of 4, his family moved to Riverdale.

Matt attended several schools during his early education years due to his specialized needs and the emergence of rights for the disabled and special education laws. He attended New Hope School in Dolton, Illinois, Oak Glenn School in Lansing, Illinois, and Patton School in Riverdale, Illinois. Matt ultimately attended ECHO (Exceptional Children Have Opportunities) School in South Holland, Illinois. Matt remained at ECHO School until the age of 21 when he achieved a Certificate of Completion in 1982. Following his completion at ECHO, Matt went on to LARC for “After 21 services for the developmentally disabled,” which included working in the Sheltered Workshop and learning functional adult skills.

Matt was very active in religious education from an early age. He participated in SPRED (Special Religious Education Division) at Mendel in his early years. He made his first Communion and was Confirmed by Cardinal Cody in 1968. He continued to be involved with the SPRED adult program for many years until it was disbanded several years ago. Matt enjoyed learning about scripture and loved singing religious songs.

Matt remained living at his home in Riverdale until the Fall of 1991. At the age of 30, he moved into a LARC CILA (Community Integrated Living Arrangement) in Lansing, Illinois. Matt lived in only two CILA homes during his 30+ year residence at LARC until his death. Matt loved living at the LARC CILA. He enjoyed learning, working, making friends, and being a part of all the opportunities that LARC provided him.

Matt enjoyed and participated in many activities throughout his life. Early on, Matt participated in Special Olympics Track and Field events at Soldier Field in the 70-80’s. As an adult, Matt joined the Special Olympic Swim Team for LARC. During his years competing in Special Olympics, Matt earned numerous medals at both the local and state level.

Above all, Matt loved interacting with people and being in the middle of all things. In the summers as a young boy, Matt went to Handy Camp, a day camp in Harvey for disabled children supported by teen volunteers, where he was exposed to a variety of stimulating summertime activities and wonderful group interactions.

Throughout his adulthood, Matt was blessed to attend Sharing Meadows Camp in Rolling Prairie, Indiana. Sharing Meadows is a Christian organization that was founded and developed by Fr. Dennis Blaney, that supports and provides opportunities to ‘other abled’ adults. Matt absolutely loved his weeks and weekends at camp. He enjoyed participating in scripture lessons, crafts, swimming, campfires, dancing, and the Talent Show Finale.

Matt was an avid sports fan, especially for his favorite teams: Notre Dame, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, and the Chicago Blackhawks. But more than anything, Matt loved being with his family, especially at Saugany Lake in Rolling Prairie, Indiana. He loved the beach, swimming, boating, cruising on the golf cart, and just living summer life within the Saugany Lake Community. Matt was instrumental every year in making sure all summer preparations and fall cleanup around the cottage were completed–lending a hand, but mostly, keeping us all on task. He loved and looked forward to the Annual Saugany Lake Dance each year, where a long line of dance partners was always waiting. Really, Matt loved any and all chances to dance.

Matt was preceded in death by his father, Ray Mercier, his nephew Forrest Mercier, and many aunts and uncles. Matt is survived by his mother, Dolores Mercier of Rolling Prairie, Indiana; his sisters, Michelle Fey and Maureen Mercier of St. Charles, Illinois; his brother Mark Mercier (Emily) of Kathleen GA; his two nieces, Erin Fey of Chicago, Illinois and Courtney Amerine (Tyler) of Westfield, Indiana; his nephew, Tucker Mercier of Kathleen, GA. and many cousins.

Matt will be remembered by all who know him as a kind and welcoming guy, with a warm smile, a great sense of humor, a happy disposition, and just the right amount of moxie. Matt, we love you and we will miss you!!

His passion for photography and cameras, computer programming, and Big Band music, especially the works of Buddy Rich and Stan Kenton, brought joy to his life and to those around him.

Lisa Ann Mosher

Lisa Ann Mosher, who will haunt her family from beyond if they reveal her true age, passed peacefully on March 31st, 2024. She is survived by her two siblings, Wendy Church (Terry) and Nick (Sara Lister), two nephews, Quentin and Trey, her four-legged feline daughter, Trouble, numerous furry nephews, and the lady who made her widowed father happy again, Patsy Spahn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Gyneth (McCoy) Mosher, all four grandparents, and several other furry children who came her way. Lisa never met an animal she didn’t like, and it was usually mutual.

Lisa was a teacher and an amazing one. She taught English as a Second Language. She was honored as Teacher of the Year once, surprising no one. Lisa was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus at a young age. Her doctors told her parents that she wouldn’t survive past 21, but she did, celebrating the anniversary of her 21st birthday over, and over, and over, and over, again. But we won’t talk about her age. During her life, diabetes threw many roadblocks at Lisa. She never got a break, but she never gave up. Lisa had the great fortune of meeting some fantastic people in her medical journey: from the doctors and nurses to the fantastic staff at Trail Creek Place and Dunes Hospice who made Lisa’s transition as peaceful as it was possible to be. Her family will be forever grateful to all of those who treated Lisa with care and compassion over the years.

If you’ve read this far, thank you. Lisa just can’t be summed up in five lines or less. She was greatly loved and will be forever missed.
