Robert E. Miller

Robert E. Miller, 93, formerly of La Porte Indiana, passed away on March 23, 2023, in Henderson, Nevada where he resided.

 

He was born October 23rd, 1929, to George E. and Gladys (McQuiston) Miller.  He lived most of his life here in La Porte before moving to Nevada after his wife Jean passed away.  After graduating from La Porte High School, he served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Leyte during the Korean war.  He worked as a letter carrier for the U. S. Postal Service for 28 years.  

 

After his retirement from the Post Office, he enjoyed being a volunteer at the La Porte County Museum.   He was a member of the Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph Church in La Porte and many different societies including NARFE,  I.V.F.A.,  N.A.L.C.,  Historical Society of La Porte County, and a Life member of Center Township Volunteer Fire Department serving for over 40 years in all ranks including Fire Chief. 

 

Robert married Jean M. Barnes on August 21st, 1953, and raised four children.  He is survived by a daughter, Diane Bayer Soroka (Mick) of Washington D.C.; sons Jerry Bayer (Allison) of Plano, Texas; Rick Miller (Marsha) of Henderson, Nevada; and Doug Miller (Joyce) of La Porte, Indiana;  six grandchildren;  and five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife Jean, sisters Mary Ellen Lounsbery and Dorothy Glanz, both of La Porte and his parents.

 

Visitation will be held 5 – 7 p.m. Monday, June 19th, 2023, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.

 

A Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 20th, 2023 at the funeral home.  Burial of ashes will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Center Township Volunteer Fire Department, 4504 West Johnson Road, La Porte, Indiana 46350.
