Linda Katherine Krause

Linda Katherine Krause, 70, of Mill Creek, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her home with her devoted husband, Robert Slap, and an assembly of sisters at her side on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

Linda was born on February 11, 1955, in Michigan City, Indiana, to the late Frank and Bunny Krause.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Slap, her brother Glenn (Joan) Krause, and five sisters: Diane (Jim) Weiler, Corinne (Krause) Smith, Debbie Krause, Donna (Lou) Piludu, and Kahne (Ira Lichtman) Krause.  A special thanks to our sister Donna (RN), whose selfless care has been a source of strength and comfort for us all.
Now for the fun part - Linda graduated from the nursing program of Indiana University. She was an extraordinary nurse who spent her professional career in Southern California and Indiana. Linda met the love of her life, musician Robert Slap, in Scottsdale, AZ. They settled in Ventura County for the next decade. They eventually returned to Northwest Indiana, where they enjoyed life on a beautiful farm and celebrated 36 years of marriage. Linda was a master gardener, delighting her family and friends with bounty from her incredible garden. With her natural affinity for animals, she opened her heart and home to many rescued dogs and cats. Of the seven Krause kids, she had a wicked sense of humor, leaving her siblings in hysterics on many occasions. Her culinary skills inspired those around her to gather, savor, and celebrate. While she may be gone in body, her vibrant spirit continues to shine.
Private family services will be held at a later date. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN 46360, is handling arrangements.
Contributions may be made to the Michiana Humane Society, 722 Indiana Highway 212, Michigan City, IN 46360.

Robert M. "Bob" Daum

Robert M. “Bob” Daum, September 25, 1955 - August 26, 2025.
Robert M. “Bob” Daum, 69, of LaPorte, IN, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on August 26, 2025, after a courageous eight-year journey with cholangiocarcinoma.
Bob lived a life full of curiosity, kindness, and adventure. For more than 35 years, his favorite adventure partner was his wife, Diane. Together, they crisscrossed the country exploring National Parks, hiking trails, and backroads - always with Bob’s camera in hand and a story (or question!) ready to share.
He was a proud dad to Kevin (Liz) Daum of Mt. Pleasant, MI, and Rose (John) DiTillo of South Bend, IN, whom he shared with their mother, Mary Anne Kryscio, and a loving “bonus dad” to Chris Schaefer of Michigan City, IN, Rachel (Jason Drake) Schaefer of St. Cloud, FL, and most recently, Danny Frazier of Hebron, IN. His greatest joy was being Grandpa Bob to Eliana and Jubilee Daum and Joe and Nora DiTillo, who always knew him as a loving, thoughtful presence who was quick to ask questions and offer support, encouragement, a joke, and his love of nature.
The middle child of 11, Bob, grew up in a bustling, loving household in Oak Lawn, IL, and is survived by his siblings Don “Murph” (Diane), Rich (Sheila), Dave (Lee), Tom (Molly), Jim (Suellen), Mary (Tom) Knight, Phil (Patty), John (Mary), Tim (Laurie), Julie (Pat) Hynes, and a big extended family of nieces, nephews, and in-laws who cherished his warmth and humor. He is preceded in death by his parents, Don and Joan (née Roethel) Daum.
Bob dedicated over 36 years of his career to the National Park Service, where his work at the Indiana Dunes, Big South Fork, and Cumberland Island left a lasting impact. Even after retirement in 2015, his devotion to nature never slowed - he kept exploring, photographing, and sharing the beauty he found outdoors.
When diagnosed with cancer in 2017, Bob approached it with the same determination and curiosity that guided his life. He researched tirelessly, sought out new treatments, and mentored others facing the same disease, becoming a source of hope and wisdom to many.
Bob will be remembered for his generosity, his gentle spirit, his boundless interests, and his way of making people feel truly seen and loved.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN, with a visitation from 10:00 am till service time.
In lieu of flowers, Bob’s family invites you to honor his life by enjoying a hike outdoors or by supporting a cause he cared deeply about - the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation, the Shirley Heinze Land Trust, or The Nature Conservancy.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, curiosity, and adventure, and will be forever missed by all who were blessed to know him.

John Kenneth Becker

John Kenneth Becker, June 8, 1950-August 18, 2025.

John Becker, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on August 18, 2025, in La Porte, Indiana, in the home he proudly built with his own two hands 20 years earlier.

Raised on a horse farm in rural Wisconsin, John’s childhood was marked by humble beginnings. School never quite captured his interest—he preferred the honest work of the farm and the joy of playing music.

After high school, John attended mechanical vocational training and went on to spend over 30 years as a heavy machinery mechanic on the railroad with Conrail. Living with a strong sense of urgency, he brought an exceptional work ethic to every job — sometimes leaving those around him wondering if he ever slowed down to take a breath.

John was known far and wide for his ability to build or fix just about anything. Confident with a unique sense of style and humor, John had a presence that always seemed to leave a lasting impression.

He built his primary home in 2005, followed by a second home he completed in 2022 — proof that his hands and mind were always busy. John preferred the outdoors, often spending hours in the garage caring for his many tractors - primarily his backhoe, welding, or bringing new projects to life. If there was a way to improve it, John would find it.

Above all, John dearly loved his grandchildren and played a meaningful role in their lives. In the years leading up to his passing, he helped care for them with steady hands and a generous heart — offering not just his time and labor, but wisdom, laughter, and unconditional love.

John is survived by his beloved wife, Carol; daughters Mellissa Becker and Jenny (James) Hedges; and cherished grandchildren Ethan Becker, Grant Becker, Jackson Hedges, and Charles Hedges. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Becker and Geraldine Thode.

John touched many lives with his humor, tireless work ethic, inventive spirit, and unwavering dedication to family. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him—and in every project that bears the mark of his handiwork.

Jon P. Miller

Jon P. Miller, August 29, 1963 – August 12, 2025.

Jon P. Miller, 61, of La Porte, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2025.

He was born in La Porte, Indiana, on August 29, 1963, to Walter J. and Patricia M. (Pekofske) Miller.

Jon graduated from La Porte High School and later went on to graduate from a professional diving school — a passion that reflected his love for the water. Growing up on Pine Lake, Jon was often found swimming, boating, or fishing with friends, soaking in the joys of lake life.

After the loss of his parents, Jon’s life took a difficult turn, and he became unhoused. He spent about a year as a guest at the Nest Community Shelter in Michigan City before returning to La Porte in October 2024 to be closer to his hometown, staying at Nest La Porte Community Shelter. Despite life’s hardships, Jon brought light and connection wherever he went.

He was famously known as “the guy with the deck of cards” — always ready to play a game of Rummy at a moment’s notice. A man of few words, Jon’s quiet presence could quickly open into laughter and camaraderie with just a simple, “I like to play cards.” His trademark phrases, “Oh shucks” or “Oh darn,” often signaled that his hand wasn’t going well, sparking laughter among friends.

Sundays at State Street Church, Jon’s eyes lit up — not just at the sweet table, but in the company of friends who felt like family. Jon and his friends would happily fill a plate, the joy of fellowship far outweighing dietary caution.

Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Patricia Miller; his brother, Jason Miller; as well as aunts, uncles, and many cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 6 PM, Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.

Friends may visit from 5 PM to 6 PM before the Celebration of Life.

Cremation has taken place, and Jon’s remains will be laid to rest with his parents at Pine Lake Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nest Community Shelter, 1001 W 8th Street, Michigan City, IN 46360, whose mission and compassion meant so much to Jon and others in need.

Though Jon faced challenges, he will be remembered for his quiet strength, his love of cards, his gentle humor, and the friendships he built. His story is a reminder that every life has value, and every person carries moments of joy worth sharing.

Born on May 23, 1928, in the small town of Welnianka, Poland, Zenon was the beloved son of the late Piotr and Katarzyna (Olech) Resiak. His life was a testament to the values of hard work, dedication, and the pursuit of knowledge.

Zenon's intellectual curiosity led him to earn a Chemistry degree in his native Poland, furthering his education with a Mechanical Technology degree from Purdue University. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a successful career as a Mechanical Engineer with Joy Manufacturing, where he worked until his retirement in 1989. Zenon's intelligence, quick wit, and adventurous spirit made him a respected and humorous colleague, whose contributions to the field were both significant and lasting.

On October 6, 1979, Zenon's life was enriched by his union with Michelle M. Majka, who survives him. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and travel. Zenon was a dedicated father to daughter Katarzyna (Janusz) Marciniak of Michigan City, son Zbigniew "Zig" (Angela) Resiak of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, stepdaughter Margaret Picur of Michigan City, Indiana, stepdaughter Irene Morgan of Noblesville, Indiana, and stepson Roman (Ellen) Dziaba of Buffalo Grove, Illinois. His legacy continues through his 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, who will remember him for his wisdom and the joy he brought to their lives.

Born into a world on the brink of war, Zenon's resilience was tested early on. As a young man, he survived the horrors of World War II, a testament to his courage and tenacity. In a daring feat that would later be replicated by the Polish Navy to demonstrate its difficulty, Zenon, along with his long-time friend Witold Jarzyna, who survives, crossed the Baltic Sea in a canoe, a harrowing three-day journey that would become a defining moment of their lives.

Zenon's adventurous spirit knew no bounds. His passion for exploration led him to travel to every continent on Earth, each journey adding to the rich tapestry of his experiences. A highlight of his travels was a private audience with the Dalai Lama, an encounter that exemplified Zenon's deep respect for diverse cultures and his quest for wisdom.

A skilled aviator, Zenon was an active member of the BD-5 aircraft network, sharing his passion with fellow enthusiasts. His piloting prowess was showcased in an impressive feat when he flew a twin-engine airplane from Michigan City to India and back, a journey that spoke to his fearless nature and technical expertise. Zenon's camaraderie with fellow pilots extended beyond the airstrip. He shared a memorable meal with the legendary musician and pilot John Denver at his home, an experience that underscored his ability to connect with people from all walks of life.

A member of Holy Family Parish, Sacred Heart Church in La Porte, Zenon's faith was a source of strength and guidance throughout his life. His commitment to his church community reflected the deep values he held dear and the legacy of kindness and compassion he leaves behind.

Zenon Resiak lived a life that many could only dream of—a life marked by bravery, intelligence, and an unquenchable thirst for adventure. His story will continue to inspire those who knew him and those who will come to know of him through the tales of his remarkable exploits.
