James E. Brashear Sr.

James E. Brashear Sr., a kind and friendly soul, passed away on May 15th, 2023, at the age of 86 in Mishawaka, Indiana. Born on September 6th, 1936, in Palestine, Illinois, James was the son of the late Graydon and Goldie (Climber) Brashear.

 

James' life was defined by his love for his family, friends, and community. On November 7th, 1959, he married the love of his life, Mercedes (Dye) Brashear, who survives him. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising six children who brought joy and pride to their lives.

 

A successful businessman, James owned J & M Amusement and dedicated over 20 years of his career to working at Joy Manufacturing. His strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family were an inspiration to all who knew him.

 

James proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. His dedication to his fellow veterans continued throughout his life as he was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.), the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.). In addition to his service to his country, James was deeply involved in his community. He was a member of the Terre Coupee Masonic Lodge in New Carlisle, Indiana, where he held the esteemed position of Past Master with the former Rolling Prairie Masonic Lodge. His dedication to the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth were evident in his daily life, as he consistently extended a helping hand to those in need.

 

James is survived by his wife, Mercedes; children, James Jr. (Christy) Brashear, Daniel (Leslie) Brashear, Gail Brashear, Marsha (Alan) King, Christina (Mark) Schult, and Sandee (Martin) Covey; 16 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Curtis Bradley Brashear; siblings, Virginia White, Ruth Carter, Joanne Shonk, Thomas, John, Bill, and Russell Brashear.

 

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Monday, May 22th, 2023, at Frank L Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana 46350, where a Masonic service will begin at 6:45 p.m.

 

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 23th, 2023, at the Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel. Burial with Military honors will follow at Heckman Memorial Cemetery in La Porte.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Terre Coupee Masonic Lodge, 54522 Timothy Road, New Carlisle, Indiana 46552.
