Obituaries Archives for 2023-10

Paul Allen Konieczny

On Wednesday August 2nd, his 66th birthday, Paul Allen Konieczny suddenly and unexpectedly passed away.

Born to Stephen and Mary in La Porte, Paul attended Sacred Heart School prior to entering the public school system and graduating from LPHS in 1976.

Out of a deep admiration for his uncle Joe Vargyas, Paul followed Joe’s lead and proudly served in the Marines upon graduating high school.

After his service, Paul worked many years traveling the country as an independent contractor for Ceiling and Floor Restoration. This suited him well as he loved making new acquaintances, finding beauty and kinship in even the most unlikely of places.

Of course, it never took long before those around him knew he was a true Green Bay Packers fan. As an avid golfer, he always had his clubs at the ready to shoot a round wherever he happened to be.

Paul was preceded in death by his father and mother, brother Mark, and nephew Kristopher, all of La Porte. He is survived by his son Jason; stepdaughters, Amanda and Andrea; partner Dawn Nelson; sisters Barbra (Robin), Sally and Ann; as well as brother John (Ali); niece, Katelyn; nephews Brian and Stephen; great nieces, Raegan and Nova; and 10 grandchildren.

The family asks friends to join them in celebrating Paul’s life at the Knights of Columbus in La Porte on November 11th from 2 to 5 PM.

Paul loved all animals large and small, helping critters in need however he could. As such, the family asks for donations to be made in his name to the Independent Cat Society of Westville or the La Porte County Animal Shelter.

“Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference in the world. But the Marines don’t have that problem.” – Ronald Reagan.

Joan Lofgren

Joan Lofgren, 80, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Sunday, October 15th, 2023 at her home, with her loving family at her side.

She was born January 22nd, 1943, in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of John Lofgren and Mary (Hughes) Lofgren, both of whom preceded her in death.

Joan grew up in La Porte and graduated from La Porte High School. She began her career as a secretary for Attorney John Belom Sr. and moved to Joliet, Indiana. More recently, Joan enjoyed reading mysteries and science fiction and played a mean game of Farkle.  She was lovingly referred to as "direction challenged" and readily admitted that cooking wasn't her best attribute. She was, however, a social butterfly and loved having others cook for her. She was a kind woman who would do anything for anybody, but most especially for her wonderful family and friends.

Joan adored her dogs, Wheedle, Glory, Frizette, and Rudy, all of whom preceded her in death.

Joan had 5 brothers and sisters, Carole (Richard) Wampler (d.), Jay ( Bonnie) Lofgren, Richard Lofgren (d.) Julien Isaac Hernandez

It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our dear Julien Isaac Hernandez on October 13th, 2023 at the age of fifteen years old. Born to Aurea Rose Torres and Ebenezer Silva Hernandez on March 14th, 2008, a LaPorte Hospital prize champion, weighing in at 10lbs. 10oz, he came into our lives and immediately earned his first of many nicknames, “Ten-ten.”

According to Dr. Mustafa, Julien was always advanced for his age. At his one-week checkup, “Ju-Ju” was able to hold his head up and look around and later was walking by nine months. He was an early talker, speaking full sentences by sixteen months and memorizing/singing his favorite songs in perfect pitch by age three. At four years old, he taught himself to read and by the age of five, he was riding his bicycle with no training wheels. He promptly turned around and taught his beloved little brother, Elias Xavier Hernandez, to do the same.

A bright, shining light of gentle kindness, joy, and love, Julien could quickly turn a stranger into a friend. As he grew older, children gravitated towards Julien’s playful spirit. He always made them feel special, willing to play games, shoot Nerf guns, throw water balloons, and play on a playground.

Julien was a sophomore at LaPorte High School and a member of 4-H Shooting Sports. He was a natural athlete and had a special skill for technology. You could catch “J-Boogie” skating with his dog Lexi, playing with his cat Timmy, working out at the YMCA, or doing tricks on his scooter at the local skate park. He also loved hiking, biking, geocaching, and kayaking. Together with Zak Williamson, they were the undefeated kayaking duo, “Team Ram-Rod”. Julien was an amazing chef, making his favorite dishes and often experimenting with new recipes and ingredients.

“J-Bug” would often visit his dear friends, the Filsons, where he learned construction techniques, worked on cars, and did flips with their girls on the trampoline. One of his most favorite activities was making memories with his numerous beloved cousins from both sides of his family. Whether it was hanging out at A Whole World of Good coffee shop, hitting up an escape room or just chilling together in their bedrooms, Julien always loved being around family and friends. The love that was shared is what we will all hold onto forever.

Julien was preceded in death by his great abuelita Polita. He is survived by his mother, father, and brother, by his grandparents Joaquin “Yogi” & Linda Torres, and Marlene Almaraz & Raul Ramos.  He is also survived by his Aunt Angela Ruiz (Oscar) and cousins Oliva & Little Oscar, Aunt Amy James (Chris) and cousins Emiela, Little Chris and Rocco, Aunt Yajaira Vasquez, and cousins Jesse, Josh, and Lianna, and by his uncle and Godfather Ken Diedrich II (Godmother Jennifer) and cousins Ken III, Cameron, Emily and Lauren, Uncle Jeremy Torres and cousins Blake (Britney) and Little Axle, Uncle Angel Almaraz (Britney) and cousins Lorenzo and Lotti, Uncle Danny Almaraz and cousins Isabella and Giovanni.

Visitation will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Avenue, La Porte, IN 46350 on Saturday, October 21st, 2023 from 11 am to 2 pm.  A memorial service led by Father Nate Edquist will begin after the visitation at 2 p.m. followed by the burial at Patton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made into the “In Memory of Julien Hernandez” account at any branch of the LaPorte Community Federal Credit Union, so that we may establish a memorial at his favorite skate park in his honor.

Sonja's memory will be cherished by her devoted daughters: Candy (Charlie) Evans and Tami (Larry-deceased) Heimer, both of La Porte.  She was blessed with and adored by her precious grandchildren, Jennifer (Brent) Neulieb, Hollie (Randall) Collette, Nate (Carrie) Evans, and Blake (Amanda) Evans; great-grandchildren, Alexis (Michael) Bubalo, Mason Neulieb, Jordan (Ian) Downs, Kali Collette, Riley Collette, Gavin Hundt, and Reece Evans; and great, great-grandchildren, Nicholas Bubalo, Walker Bubalo, and Bodhi Brant.  Sonja was blessed to have a stepdaughter, Sherry (Dan-deceased) of Hartville, OH, and is grandma to Sherry's 3 children, Tom, John, and Penny.  Additionally, she leaves behind many dear nieces and nephews.

Regrettably, besides her husband, Sonja was preceded in death by her parents, her son Michael Mathis, and her brother, Rex G. Harrison.

Alongside Willie, Sonja co-owned Harrison Engine Service. She relished the adventures she shared with her husband during their travels. Describing Sonja as merely an "animal lover" wouldn't do justice to her passion; she had a special place in her heart for her treasured dog, Peanut, and her rescue dogs Daisy and Jessie "Squirt". Family was the cornerstone of Sonja's life, but she also deeply valued her friendships. Known for her nurturing spirit and boundless generosity, Sonja's legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched.

Those who knew Sonja well knew she loved jewelry and bling.  They will fondly remember Sonja for her playful sense of humor.

A Celebration of Life Service for Sonja is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 6th, 2023, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, with Dennis Galloway presiding. Subsequently, she will be laid to rest at Pine Lake Cemetery.
