Charles McSurley Jr.

Charles McSurley Jr., 91, of Kingsbury, Indiana, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 14th, 2023 at Northwest Health La Porte.

 

He was born July 13th, 1931 in Emma, Kentucky, the son of Charlie and Emmie (Campbell) McSurley.

 

Charles worked as a coal miner and on May 29th, 1959, in Drift, Kentucky, he married Yvonne (Stambaugh).  Together they moved to this area in 1961 where he worked on an egg farm in the KOP.  He then got a job working for Cargill, running the feed mill until retirement. Charles was a member of the New Hope Baptist Chapel in La Porte, where he served as a Deacon and taught bible study on Wednesdays. Charles loved the outdoors where he found joy in fox hunting, mowing the grass, gardening vegetables and fishing with nephews Rodney and Gary. He was a passionate story teller, a wood worker who built many bird houses and an avid Cincinnati Reds baseball fan. Charles greatest love was serving the Lord and spending time with his precious grandkids. 

 

Along with his wife of 64 years, who he lovingly called Von, he is survived by his two daughters, Emma Renee (Jeff) Dowell of La Porte, IN, Sheila McSurley of La Porte, IN; two sons, Keith (Jennifer) McSurley of Hamlet, IN, David (Jen) McSurley of La Porte, IN; sister, Naretta Howell of Tippecanoe, IN; 12 grandchildren, Matthew, Leslie, Taylor, Cruz, Justin, Ashley, Dalton, Addison, Nathan, Madilyn, Miles, Micah; and seven great-grandchildren, Elijah, Paxton, Brian, Lincoln, Nelsa, Nina, and Aiden.

 

Charles was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Spears, Stella Mae Lafferty, Ruby Bates, Francis Alley, Charity McSurley and brothers, Herman and Thermin McSurley.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, LaPorte, IN. A graveside service and interment will take place at Kingsbury Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 18th, 2023, with Pastor Monroe Jones, New Hope Baptist, officiating.
