Daniel Brian Ulman

Daniel Brian Ulman, affectionately known as Danny to all who loved him, passed away tragically on January 16, 2026, in Key Largo, Florida, as the result of an automobile accident. He was 42 years old.

Danny was born on August 14, 1983, in Michigan City, Indiana. From the very beginning, he possessed a curious mind, a determined spirit, and a heart fiercely loyal to those he cared about.

A 2002 graduate of New Prairie High School, Danny continued his education at Ivy Tech Community College before answering the call to serve his country. In 2006, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served honorably until 2014 as a Culinary Specialist. While he enjoyed cooking, his true passion was technology—a passion that followed him throughout his life.

During his naval service, Danny was stationed in Hawaii as a submariner aboard the USS Bremerton, where he earned his coveted Dolphin pin, a distinction that speaks to his dedication, discipline, and perseverance. He later served aboard the USS John C. Stennis Aircraft Carrier, where his technical ingenuity left a lasting legacy. There, he not only managed food inventory but also designed an inventory tracking system that remains in use today—an enduring testament to his intellect and problem-solving ability.

After his military service, Danny continued to thrive in the IT field, working remotely for Online Statements in South Bend, Indiana. In August of 2022, he made his home in Key Largo, Florida, where he delighted in the warm weather and coastal life. Above all, Danny was proudly, unapologetically himself—a “super geeky computer guy” with a brilliant mind and a sharp sense of humor.

Danny found joy in the simple pleasures that made life rich. He absolutely loved Christmas—the music, the decorations, the gatherings, and the sense of togetherness it brought. He was known for his love of extremely spicy food, famously making chili so hot that only he could eat it. A local legend at Wings Etc., Danny conquered “The Wall” sauce and earned a place on the restaurant’s Wall of Fame in La Porte—an achievement he wore with quiet pride.

Those who knew Danny will remember him as honest, strong-willed, and deeply loyal—a man who stood by his principles and the people he loved without hesitation.

Danny is survived by his loving parents, David and Kathleen Ulman of Rolling Prairie; his cherished daughter, Becca Ulman of Omak, Washington, who was the light of his life; his sister, Tamara Ulman of Burlington, Vermont; his former wife and mother of his daughter, Calli Chase of Omak, Washington; his grandparents, Roger and Fay Koenemann of Decatur, Indiana; his uncle, Jeffery Koenemann (Cristine) of Silver Lake, Indiana; aunts Cynthia Gallmeyer of Decatur, Indiana, Rita Rorick (Paul) of Northville, Michigan, and Brenda Bunton (Mark) of West Lafayette, Indiana; along with many cousins and extended family members who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leo and Virginia Ulman, and his aunt, Jeanene Price (Jerry).

A visitation will be held on Monday, February 2, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. CST (6:00 to 9:00 p.m. EST) at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, La Porte. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, February 3, at 11:00 a.m. CST (12:00 p.m. EST) at Trinity Lutheran Church, 907 Michigan Avenue, La Porte, Indiana officiated by Rev. Richard Ungrodt. There will be 1 hour of visiting before the service. A private burial with military honors will be rendered at Rolling Prairie Cemetery, honoring Danny’s dedicated service to his country.

Memorial contributions in Danny’s memory may be made to an American Legion Post of donor’s choice or another organization of donor’s choice.

Danny Ulman lived with purpose, passion, and quiet brilliance. His legacy lives on in the systems he built, the service he gave, the love he shared, and the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Jackson "Jack" Paul Weir

Jackson “Jack” Paul Weir It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jackson “Jack” Paul Weir, age 68, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, following a courageous battle with illness.

Jack is lovingly survived by his children and stepdaughter: Laura Tremblay, Tyler Weir, and Courtney Weir; his sister, Yvonne Weir; his brother, Jonas Weir; former sister-in-law, Terry O’Neil; and nephews Jeffrey, Kenneth, and Kevin Weir. He will also be fondly remembered by his grandson, Kolby Tremblay.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Glendon Weir and Betty White.

Born on May 7, 1957, in La Porte, Indiana, Jack spent much of his life traveling both personally and professionally, ultimately dividing his later years between Port Angeles, Washington, and his hometown of La Porte, where he retired in 2023 after a 26-year career with Local 716 Pipefitters Union of Augusta, Maine.

Retirement allowed him to spend more time enjoying life with the love of his life, Ann Sabinas, who survives.

Jack grew up in Rolling Prairie, Indiana, and graduated from New Prairie High School in 1975. He enjoyed playing hockey and baseball and remained a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. After serving nearly two years in the U.S. Army specializing in helicopter maintenance, he returned home in 1977 and went on to build an impressive career in welding. His work took him across the country as a commercial diver and later as a highly respected pressure welder and pipefitter in the oil, gas, and nuclear industries.

Jack’s adventurous spirit defined both his work and his personal life. He had a gift for helping others discover and appreciate new places, whether on a union job in an unfamiliar city, an outing with family and friends, or a favorite bike ride starting right from his driveway.

Jack was always looking toward the horizon, curious about what lay ahead. Known for his easy laughter, generosity, and approachability, Jack connected effortlessly with people—whether through shared service as a veteran, thoughtful conversations, or simple moments of humor. He was deeply committed to his values, proud of his blue-collar roots, and believed strongly in civic responsibility. Despite his extensive travels, skill, and intelligence, Jack remained humble and content with life’s simple pleasures: good food, a comfortable place to rest, familiar comforts, and his signature long white socks.

Jack was a truly unique and remarkable man. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, and his memory will live on always.

A Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.

Nicholas Aaron VanHook

Nicholas Aaron VanHook, age 24, of Rolling Prairie, passed into eternal peace on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Born on August 13, 2001, in La Porte to William T. “Bill” and Tammy (Peterson) VanHook, Nicholas’s time on earth was far too brief, yet his life was full beyond measure.

He walked gently through this world, leaving behind love, kindness, and a light that will never fade from the hearts of those who knew him. A 2020 graduate of New Prairie High School, Nicholas found his calling beneath open skies. Spending time outdoors brought him joy and purpose, and through his career with Tree Care Plus as an Arborist, he used this love to serve his community and grow an even deeper connection with nature.

Nicholas was defined by his gentle and sensitive spirit. He had a calming presence and a generous heart, offering kindness freely and without condition. He listened more than he spoke, loved deeply, and moved through life with humility and grace. His compassion made others feel seen and valued, and his genuine spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who met him.

He is survived by his loving parents, Bill and Tammy VanHook of Rolling Prairie, whose hearts’ are forever marked by the love of their son; and by his brother, William M. VanHook, his closest confidant and lifelong friend. Nicholas shared a profound and enduring love with his fiancée of five years, Jaclyn Maleckas, the love of his life and his constant companion. Their bond was one of devotion, tenderness, and shared dreams, a love that continues on beyond this life. Their love is a beautiful testament to the warmth and goodness he carried within him. Nicholas lived a life that mattered. One defined by love, kindness, and the deep impression he left on everyone who knew him.

His gentleness was evident in the way he treated others, always leading with compassion, patience, and an open heart. He had a rare gift for making people feel seen, valued, and safe, and his kindness reached far beyond words; this kindness and care extended to animals as well. Nicholas cherished his four cats, Monty, Maverick, Rusty, and Rambo, and loved to search for and look at insects and amphibians outside, especially frogs and praying mantises.

He would excitedly take photos of wildlife he found and share them with his loved ones. Nicholas is also survived by his maternal Nana and Papa, Harold and Terry Peterson; his uncles, Jonathan VanHook, Brent (Elizabeth) VanHook, and Steve (Sara) Peterson; his great uncle and aunt, Craig and Paula Waltman; and his cousins, Joshua (Kianna) Peterson, Kaitlyn Peterson, Kyle VanHook, Grace VanHook, Matthew VanHook, and Debbie (Leonard) Stanford. He was dearly loved by many great aunts, uncles, and cousins whose lives were brighter for having known him. He was welcomed into heaven by his maternal grandparents, William J. and Ruth VanHook, who now hold him in eternal peace.

Family was the foundation of Nicholas’s world. He cherished his many aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family, each relationship held with loyalty, warmth, and quiet strength. He shared a special bond with his Nana and Papa, treasuring time spent camping and fishing with them, wrapped in laughter, stories, and love that will echo forever. Their love and guidance shaped who he became. Nicholas found joy in simple blessings; fishing and kayaking (sometimes at the same time), as well as golfing under blue skies, and tending to his plants in the spring and summer. His growing faith, kindness, and gentle love remain a beacon of light, a lighthouse guiding his loved ones through this sea of grief.

Though we grieve in the shadow of his loss, we give thanks for the bright light of his life. Nicholas taught us that gentleness is strength, that love is meant to be held boldly and unapologetically, and that even a short life can leave an everlasting mark.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (CST) on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, LaPorte, Indiana.

Message from Mom and Dad: From the moment we first held you, Nicholas, our lives were forever changed. Being your parents was the greatest honor of our lives. You taught us what true kindness looks like; how to love gently, live humbly, and care deeply for others.

Your quiet strength, compassionate heart, and unwavering goodness filled our days with pride and gratitude. Though our hearts ache in your absence, we trust you are at peace, surrounded by God’s perfect love. You will always live on in our prayers, in the stories we share, and in every act of kindness done in your name. John L. Leinweber

John L. Leinweber, September 28, 1945 - January 10, 2026.
John Lloyd Leinweber, a larger-than-life force, passed away on January 10, 2026, at Firefly Farm in LaPorte, Indiana, following a courageous journey with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 80 years old.
Born on September 28, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, John grew up on the South Side where he learned early the values that would define his life: hard work, independence, ambition, and an unwavering belief that anything worth doing was worth doing big. Entirely self-made, John loved to dream, build, create, and improve, whether in business, community, or family life.
John was a proud graduate of Thornridge High School and went on to earn
his Bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University, where his leadership and magnetism were already evident. He served as President of the Interfraternity Council and was a proud member of Tau Kappa Epsilon. He later attended Kent Law School for two years and proudly served in the United States Army Reserves from 1968-1972.
A true entrepreneur and businessman, John’s career reflected his drive and vision. He began his career at Xerox and A. B. Dick, then began his entrepreneurial journey with Apeco in New Jersey, and went on to found American Office Equipment in 1978, which he successfully sold to Danka in 1994. Never one to slow down, John never retired. He later formed Imagine Technology Group, continuing to innovate and lead well into later life. Beyond business success, John was a philanthropist, believing deeply in giving back and supporting causes that mattered.
John lived fully and passionately. An avid competitive handball player, cyclist, golfer, and world traveler, he embraced adventure at every turn. He participated in multiple AIDS benefit bike rides during the 1990s, cycling across routes from Boston to New York City and San Francisco to Los Angeles, combining his love of physical challenge with his deep compassion for others. He loved horses, had a cowboy spirit, and spent time at places close to his heart including Firefly Farm and Briar Leaf Golf Club.
John was deeply committed to his community. He served on the boards of the Lubeznik Center, LaPorte Hospital Foundation, and Barker Mansion. His greatest community passion was the Friendship Botanic Gardens, where his vision, generosity, and enthusiasm helped cultivate beauty, connection, and growth for all.
Above all else, family was John’s greatest joy. He was married to Patricia Niemi in 1969, with whom he had three daughters. He later found enduring love with his husband James A. Laughlin, whom he was with since 1978 and married in 2013. John was the proud father of Triecia (Bobby) Roberts of La Porte, Indiana; Melissa (Isaac) Triska of Elmhurst, Illinois; and Jeanie (Jeff) Shuck of Niles, Michigan. He was a devoted grandfather to nine grandchildren (Haley, Jordan, Kayla, Zachary, Anna, Matthew, Johnny, Ellie, and Danny) a delighted great-grandfather of five (Kennedy, Fiona, Gemma, Lucas, and Olivia) each of whom brought him immense pride and joy.
John is survived by his sister Christine (Lawrence) Leugoud and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Margaret Leinweber, and sisters Gladys and Gail.
Those who knew John will remember him as energetic, charismatic, generous, loving, passionate, deeply caring, and the undeniable life of the party. He had a rare ability to make people feel seen, inspired, and welcome, often all at once. Whether through laughter, leadership, or  loyalty, John left a lasting impression everywhere he went.
John lived in many places over the years, Chicago’s South Side, South Holland, Dolton, Lemont, Long Beach, LaPorte, Indiana, and Naples, Florida, but wherever he landed, he built community, friendships, and a life rich with purpose.

A pause in what’s to be,
A resting place along the road,
To sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
But never meant to stay…
Our destination is a place
Far greater than we know.
For some, the journey’s quicker,
For some, the journey’s slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We’ll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the Lord.
