Anthony " Amaris" Rosa Alvarado

Anthony " Amaris" Rosa Alvarado, May 21, 1986-November 27, 2021, 35, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Saturday, November 27, 2021, as the result of an automobile accident in La Porte.

 

He was born May 21, 1986 in Caguas, Puerto Rico, the son of James Rosa Martinez and Luz Delia Alvarado.

 

Anthony moved to La Porte only 5 months ago from Massachusetts and went to work for B and B Manufacturing in the shipping and receiving department. He was a member of the Baptist religion.  Anthony enjoyed playing pool and darts with his friends and working on cars.  He loved kids and was always helping others in any way he could. Anthony was an up-and-coming musician who wrote music and instrumentals on his laptop, as well as doing a little singing and rapping. 

 

He is survived by his parents; his grandmother, Daniela Martinez; brothers, Jaime Rosa and Samuel Rosa Alvarado; sisters, Ana Lidia Rosa and Jessica Rosa and several nieces and nephews.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN. The family will have a private viewing before flying Anthony to Massachusetts for burial.

Hirian Clifford Wiltfong

Hirian Clifford Wiltfong, 66, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital on Saturday, November 27, 2021.

 

Hirian was born on May 5, 1955 in LaPorte, IN, to Hiawathia Merle and Mildred Ava (Sutton) Wiltfong. 

 

He was preceded in death by both his parents and brother-in-law, John Otto.  Surviving Hirian are his daughter, Jennifer (Wiltfong) Gidcomb of Fayetteville, TN; 4 grandsons, Trenton, Nicholas, Brayden, and Jackson; siblings, Vanasa Otto of La Porte, Darla (Tom) Schroeder of Brownsville, IN, Pamela (Larry) Schmalfeldt of Indianapolis, and Harlan (Nancy) Wiltfong of La Porte; 2 nieces, Mollie (Ryan) Hawkins of Watkinsville, GA and Tara (Tony) Lemus of New Palestine, IN; 2 great-nieces, Olivia and Miley; and 2 great-nephews, Brady and Carter.

 

Hirian was a Travel Analyst at the Defense Finance and Accounting Service in Indianapolis, IN.   He enjoyed all kinds of sports, spending time with his friends and family, and the simple things in life. Hirian battled several chronic health issues over the past several years. However, he was a fighter!  Through it all, he never became bitter or let his illnesses change the person he was. Hirian always kept a positive attitude, right up to the very end.

 

Hirian was dearly loved by his friends and family.  He will be greatly missed.

 

He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1976 - 1979, serving 6 months in Germany.  While in the Army, he completed the Medical Specialist Course and earned Sharpshooter (Rifle) and Expert (Hand Grenade) badges.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, where Full Military Honors will take place.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home. 

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Heart and Vascular Hospital, 8075 North Shadeland Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46256.

Denah A. Childress

Denah A. Childress, 69, of Rolling Prairie, passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2021.

 

Denah was born on July 4, 1952 in La Porte, IN, to Fred and Garnet (Meyers) Simar.

 

On May 8, 1971 in La Porte, IN, she married Bradley Michael, who survives.  Also surviving are her sons, Mark (Wendy) Childress of La Porte, Michael (Jennifer) Childress of La Porte, and Adam Childress of La Porte; 6 grandchildren, Kimberly (Steffen) Morseau of South Bend, Jordan Childress of La Porte, Kira and Tyler Childress of La Porte, and Patrick and Ben Childress of La Porte; brother, Charlie Simar of CA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, David Simar; and sister, Edris Stout.

 

Denah worked in retail as a cashier.  She loved spending quality time with her family, particularly her grandchildren.

 

A Private Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

Judith L. Ritchie, 79, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at 10:22 am in Golden Living Center - Fountainview Terrace , La Porte, IN.

Shelly Ann Lapczynski (Services Update)

Shelly Ann Lapczynski, 50, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 7, 2021.

 

She was born on August 29, 1971, in Michigan City to Arthur Lapczynski of Rolling Prairie and the late Phyllis J. (Schneider) Lapczynski who preceded her in death on January 15, 2021.

 

Shelly was employed as an LPN with Life Care Center of Michigan City. She attended Purdue Northwest and graduated from Ivy Tech as an LPN. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in New Carlisle, Indiana, the American Legion Post 297, New Carlisle, Indiana and enjoyed traveling.

 

Shelly is survived by her children, Alvie (Sarah) Ellenwine of Niles, Michigan, Bronson (Destiny) Ellenwine of La Porte, Drake Ellenwine of Hudson Lake; a granddaughter, Ivyanna Ellenwine; a sister, Gina (Scott) DeMeyer of New Carlisle; and her fiancé, Kevin Rood of Rolling Prairie, Indiana. She was preceded in death by a son, Dustin Ellenwine, and her mother.

 

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, December 5, 2021 at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, December 6, 2021 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 55756 Tulip Road, New Carlisle, Indiana 46552. Betty Ruth (Jardine) Kessler

Betty Ruth (Jardine) Kessler, 95, of La Porte, Indiana passed on Wednesday, November 28, 2021, surrounded by family.

 

Betty was born August 25, 1926, in Kansas City, Kansas and adopted as an infant by Edmund and Alvina (Malchow) Jardine. 

 

Betty was a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a life member of the St Paul’s United Church of Christ. She was a secretary for both the La Porte County Fair Board and for the Michigan City Schools Superintendent. She served as a cub scout and girl scout leader and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and LaPorte County Democratic Party. 

 

On April 4, 1948, Betty married Robert Walter Kessler who preceded her in death along with her parents. She is survived by one daughter, Karen (Mark) Hoffmann of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; two sons, Garry (Jeanne) Kessler of La Porte, Indiana and Barry Kessler of La Porte, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Brett (Heather) Kessler, Erik (Alexis) Kessler, Dr. Chris (Jessica) Kessler, Kathryn (Chris) Dragan, Clint (Sara) Kessler, Alison Kessler, Jon (Kathleen) Hoffmann, and Dr. Jennifer Hoffmann; and ten great-grandchildren. 

 

Visitation will precede the funeral from 9:30 a.m.-12 noon, on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.

 

Funeral services will be at 12 noon on Tuesday December 7, 2021, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

Cindy D. Eggert

Cindy D. Eggert, December 10, 1958-November 25, 2021, 62, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Thursday November 25, 2021 at her home.

 

She was born December 10, 1958 in Michigan City, Indiana, the daughter of William H. Wallen and Betty J. (Upp) Wallen.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, Cindy graduated from La Porte High School and received her Asso. Degree in nursing at Commonwealth.  She worked as an LPN at Lakeland Family Medical Center, La Porte. On September 10, 1977, Cindy married the love of her life, Ronald L.Eggert.  She had many interests, including baking and crafting, creating flower arrangements and quilts. Cindy loved animals and had three of her own, 2 dogs, Brook and Remi and a cat, Lacy. She also loved birds, especially hummingbirds and had several feeders in the yard.  Cindy thoroughly enjoyed everything about Christmas, especially having her family around her. Her special joy was her grandchildren, who she loved with all her heart.

 

 Cindy is survived by her husband, Ronald Eggert of La Porte; two sons, Joshua (Christina) Eggert of SD, Christopher (Maggie Levendowski) Eggert of La Porte, IN; daughter, Stephanie (Jake Shelton) Eggert of La Porte, IN; brother, Greg Wallen of La Porte, IN; seven grandchildren, Allison, Nathan, Wyatt, Evan, Colton, Jonathan and Coraline.

 

Cindy was preceded in death by her parents.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN where the family will receive friends on Thursday, December 2, 2021 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  The family will have a private funeral service after which cremation will take place.

Maria Elsa Esper, 90, Las Cruces, New Mexico, formerly of Michigan City, IN passed away peacefully in her home Monday, November 8, 2021 at 8:05 am in Las Cruces.

Jason Charles Christopher Pease

Jason Charles Christopher Pease, 48, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2021.

 

Jason was born January 28, 1973, in Franklin, Indiana to the late Monte Pease and Linda (Brehm) Pease of La Porte, Indiana.

 

He is survived by his mother; children, Korin Bell of Rockwood, Tennessee, Jacob (Jamie) Pease of Wartburg, Tennessee, Baley Pease of Cookeville, Tennessee, Connor Stalbaum of La Porte, Indiana, Carson Stalbaum of La Porte, Indiana; grandchildren, Easton, Piper, Hannibal, Phoenix, Harper, Dahlia, Sterling,; a sister, Tammy Decker of La Porte, Indiana, and a brother, Jonathan (Le Ann) Pease of New Carlisle, Indiana; his fiancé, Rebecca Kamradt of La Porte, Indiana; and her children, Taryn Spahn of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, Ethan Spahn of Okinawa, Japan; and many nieces and nephews.

 

Jason was an avid bowler having bowled a 300 game 57 times.  He was a professional poker player which took him to Reno, Nevada.  Unfortunately, his diagnosis with cancer changed his career path and he returned home to La Porte to be with family.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be announced at a later date.

Carol Jean Padgett

Carol Jean Padgett, 72, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, November 25, 2021.

  

Carol was born in La Porte, IN, on January 5, 1949 to Louis L. and Frieda M. (Hapner) Solmos. 

 

On December 2, 1967 in La Porte, IN, she married Gary L. Padgett who preceded her in death on May 22, 2012.  Surviving are her 2 sons, Scott (Christine) Padgett of La Porte and Michael (Julie) Padgett of Michigan City; 8 grandchildren, Trenton (Deanna) Salzer-Padgett, Jeffery Michiaels, Corey Heinen, Jazmine (Tyler) Jonas, Jessica (Scott) Webb, Spencer Padgett, Kyle Heinen, and Sadie Padgett; 7 great-grandchildren, Sterling, Charlotte, Ariella, Lola, Carter, Maverick, and Annistyn; brother, Dennis Solmos; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Linda Lorencz and Charles Solmos.

 

Carol worked as a banquet server.  She was the "crafter" of the family.  Carol enjoyed eating Little Caesars Pizza and watching game shows and the Cubs.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Kathleen M. Dolohery, 63, passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at Fountainview Terrace in La Porte.

 

Kathleen "Kathy" was born on June 8, 1958 in La Porte, IN, to Alfred "Ted" and Judith "Judy" I. (Schroeder) Dolohery.

 

Surviving are her parents of La Porte; sister, Julia; and 2 nephews, Michael and Ryan.

 

Kathy graduated from La Porte High School in 1976 and from Purdue University North Central with an Associate Degree in Business.  She worked as a secretary at Sullair in Michigan City and several other businesses in the area.  Kathy enjoyed snow skiing, swimming, the beach, music, and art.

Phyllis "Jeanne" I. Humes

Phyllis “Jeanne” I. Humes, 84, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2021.

 

Jeanne was born May 11, 1937, in Norton, Virginia to the late Sidney M. and Edna (Smith) Jones.

 

Jeanne worked at the former Union Cigar store in La Porte. 

 

Jeanne is survived by three sons, Michael L. (Donna) Craft of Indianapolis, Indiana, Douglas A. (Tracie) Humes, of La Porte, Indiana, and Gary W. (Stacy) Humes of South Bend, Indiana; many grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Okrezsik of La Porte, Indiana; a brother, Reverend Monroe Jones of La Porte, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Billy Jones and Russell Jones.

Henry Dean Stacy

Henry Dean Stacy, September 18, 1986-November 20, 2021, 35, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Northwest Health-La Porte.

 

He was born September 18, 1986 in Jackson, Kentucky, the son of Joe and Roxie Mae (Pelfrey) Stacy.

 

Henry spent many years in Kentucky before moving to La Porte 11 years ago.  He worked as a security guard at Howmet and was a member of the Salvation Army. He loved horseshoes and used to pitch at Park St.(Charles Lindewald) park every Wednesday.  Henry enjoyed fishing and was a tattoo artist. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his son. On October 26, 2019, in La Porte, he married Missy (Miller) Stacy, who survives.

 

He is also survived by his son, Kayden Stacy; step-son, Jacob Hamlin; step-daughter, Charlee Ingle; brother, Jimmy Joe Stacy; three sisters, Goldie (Josh) Stacy-Turner of KY, Clara (Jessie) Haggard of KY, Angela Stacy of MI and several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN where the family will receive friends on Tuesday November 30, 2021 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm, with a funeral service following at 3:00.  Cremation will take place. Gertrude A. Losiniecki

Gertrude A. Losiniecki, 55, La Porte, Indiana, passed away Monday, November 22, 2021 at 4:26 am in Northwest Health-La Porte, La Porte, IN.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN.  Visitation will be from 9:00 am - 11:00 am, Saturday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.

 

She was born June 15, 1966 in Michigan City, IN to the late Roy and Doreen (Greening) Moore, Sr. On June 21, 1985 in Michigan City, IN she married Robert Losiniecki who survives in La Porte.

 

Also surviving are three daughters, Tina Losiniecki, Teresa Losiniecki and Tiffany Losiniecki all of La Porte, IN; son, Timothy Losiniecki, Sr.

of La Porte, IN; four grandchildren, Timothy Losiniecki, Jr., Ashton Burrows, Brynnley Marshall and Baker Marshall; and her sister, Penny

(Alec) Ramey of Michigan City, IN.

 

She was also preceded in death by her brother, Roy Moore, Jr.

 

Gertrude enjoyed crocheting, puzzles, word searches, fishing and spending time with her family.

Ewa Maria Barteczko

Ewa Maria Barteczko, 46, of La Porte, passed away on Friday, November 19, 2021 at Center for Hospice Center-Mishawaka. 

   

Ewa was born in Lumbomia, Poland, on March 24, 1975 to Karol and Brygida (Mikolajec) Godoj. 

 

Surviving are her children, Amanda (Thomas) Fielden, Justin Barteczko, and Kyle Barteczko; sister, Malgorzata (Gregor) Koczy; sister-in-law Nancy (Tim) Daniels; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, Meik Koczy, Jennifer Koczy, Patryk Godoj and Pawel Godoj.

 

She was preceded in death by her father, Karol Godoj, and father-in-law, Hubert Barteczko.

 

Ewa enjoyed listening to country music, going to the beach, and watching Norte Dame football. She also loved watching Justin play sports.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

 

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 10 a.m. (CT) on December 4th 2021 at Door Village United Methodist Church, 3502 W. Joliet Road La Porte, IN, with Pastor Sam Polito officiating.

Betty Jane Herrold

Our Beloved mother, Betty Jane Herrold, 92, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Sunday, November 21, 2021.

Betty was born December 9, 1928, in Frazee, Minnesota to the late Cleveland and Edith (Stillings) Graham.

Betty married James Henry Herrold on October 15, 1949, who passed away January 10, 1979.

Betty worked at many jobs throughout her life including Allis Chalmers, Westville Lumber Company, and the Swanson Center helping with many activities.  She loved baking, cooking, and most of all her family.

Betty is survived by a daughter, Leslie (Dennis) Lantz of La Porte, Indiana; three sons, James Herrold of La Porte, Indiana, Ross (Michelle) Herrold of Chesterton, Indiana, and Robert (Teffany) Herrold of La Porte, Indiana; eight grandchildren,  Graham (Jennifer) Ault, James (Becky) Herrold, Stephanie (Christopher) Dobecki, Melanie Herrold, Robert (Sam Charles) Herrold, Jacob Herrold, Angel Herrold, and Raymond Herrold; and six great-grandchildren, Isabella, James, Clark, Grant, Chevy, and Sunny.  She was preceded in death by her siblings, Pat Graham, Bob Graham, Bernice Bridges, and Jean Cole.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday, November 29, 2021, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.  A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m.  Pastor Dennis Meyer will officiate.   

Private burial will take place at a later date.

Garland Mullins

Garland Mullins, 81, of La Porte, passed away on Friday, November 19, 2021 at Northwest Health La Porte.

 

Garland was born on February 9, 1940 in Waldo, KY, to Jasper and Eva (Hale) Mullins.

 

On June 9, 1979 in Fish Lake, IN, he married Margie Fisher who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Kim (Kimberly) Mullins, Michelle (Bill) Mullins-Land, Tina (Dave) Naughton, Julia (Donald) Tibbs; grandchildren, Brandon, Hollie, Lauren, Kennedy, Jackson, Daniel, Austin, John, and Christy; numerous great-grandchildren; siblings, Annie Conn, Roger Mullins, Cleda Mae Lawson, Dirl Mullins, Ray Mullins, Juanita Howard, Vaughn Bailey, Ellerie Collins, Rondal Mullins, Danny Mullins, Harlen Mullins, James Mullins, Larry Mullins, and Vickie Link; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded by his parents; stepson, John Fisher; granddaughter, Amy Lynn Douglas; sister, Imogene Prater.

 

Over the years, Garland worked as a machine operator for Indiana Molding, Arno Tapes, and retired from Dwyer.  He enjoyed family get-togethers, playing corn hole, visiting his stomping grounds in Kentucky, and attending grandchildren's sporting events.  Garland was a self-taught musician playing the banjo, guitar, mandolin, ukulele, violin, bass, and piano.  He sang and played bluegrass and gospel music in the "Bluegrass Messengers" with his wife, Margie.  Garland was a passionate vegetable gardener sharing his bounty with family and friends.  Garland loved the Lord and was a member of Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Michigan City.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Brother Brian Parker and Brother Brandon Martin officiating.  Burial will follow at Patton Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Marian Heath

Marian Heath, 91, of La Porte, passed away on Friday, November 19, 2021 at Fountainview Terrace.

 

Marian was born on April 20, 1930 in La Porte, IN to Raymond Homer and Edna Emma (Hoeppner) Link.

 

On June 3, 1953, she married Harold Otha Heath who preceded her in death on March 14, 1972.  Surviving are her children, Thomas (Kathy) Heath, Holly (James) Catron and Merri Heath; 3 grandchildren, Scott (Sarah) Surber, Todd (Rachel) Surber and Heidi (Ethan) Herbert; 7 great-grandchildren, Adalyn, Kallie, Landis, Lilyann, Alaina, Alexis, and Zane; dear friend, Richard A. Miller; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded by her parents, husband, and brother, Ralph Link.

 

Marian was a 1947 graduate of La Porte High School.  She attended classes at Purdue North Central.  Marian lived her entire life in the La Porte area.  In the early years of her marriage, Marian was a stay at home mother.  After her children were all in school Marian returned to work at GTE, eventually retiring as a supervisor with 30 years of service.

 

Marian was a member of First United Methodist Church in La Porte and a past member of Naomi Circle and Parish Shepherds.  In addition to enjoying church activities in her retirement, Marian liked traveling and volunteering for the La Porte Hospital Auxiliary.  She enjoyed getting together with her friends, playing cards, going out to eat, and watching NFL and NBA sports.  Marian loved her grandkids, horses, and her dogs.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Bob Vale and Pastor Evan Lash officiating.  Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.  Family requests that all attending would please wear a mask.

 

The family would like to give a special thanks to Marian's friends, Libby, Lou, and cousin Nancy (who recently passed away), who stayed in touch with her until her passing.

Dr. Victor Contri

Dr. Victor Contri, 73, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 10:40 a.m., Wednesday, November 17, 2021 in his home.

 

He was born December 13, 1947, in East Chicago, Indiana, to Hugo and Millicent (Obradovich) Contri.

 

Dr. Contri graduated from Merrillville High School, Indiana University, and IU School of Medicine with honors. In 1976, he moved to Michigan City to work in the ER at St. Anthony Hospital and later opened his private family practice there.

On August 18, 1972, in Merrillville, Indiana, he married Sue (Daugherty) Contri, who survives.

 

Also surviving are his five children, Victor H., William, Karin, Michael (Amelia) and Carolyn (Doyle Martin) Contri; one grandson, Noah Contri; one sister, Teddy (Ron) Thompson; one sister-in-law, Susan Contri; one nephew; several nieces; and his dog, Bear.

 

Preceding in death were his parents; and one brother, Nickolas Contri.

Robert  Taylor Jr.

Robert  Taylor Jr.,  May 26, 1958-November 13, 2021, 63, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Saturday November 13, 2021 at Northwest Health-La Porte.

 

Robert was born on May 26, 1958 in Winter Haven, FL, to Ruie Taylor.

 

Surviving Robert are his sons, Nic Ferguson and Chris Taylor, both of La Porte; 5 grandchildren, Tata Taylor, Tabby Taylor, Tommy Taylor, Kam Ferguson, and Rhett Ferguson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his mother and sister, Rebecca.

 

Robert proudly served in the U.S. Army from March 1978 to May 1983. He was an E-5 in the Army Corp. of Engineers.

 

Robert was a truck driver fro 20 years. He later worked as a stockman for Ollies. He enjoyed bowling, softball, and all Chicago sports. He loved spending time with his family, finding pride in his children and helping his grandchildren. His friends were also very important to him.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Wednesday, November 24th from 10 am until service time at 12 Noon. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home at 12 Noon on Wednesday, November 24. Interment will follow at the Pine Lake Cemetery with military honors.

Mary Beth Watterson

On Friday, September 24, the Lord's angels carried Mary Beth Watterson's soul to meet Him and be reunited with her parents.

 

She was born May 16, 1949, in La Porte to Jim and Helen Reed.

 

She married the love of her life, Charles Watterson Jr., who survives, on July 3, 1992.  They moved to Rutherfordton, NC in 2019.

 

Mary Beth and Charlie had a very strong, loving and supportive relationship throughout their years together.  They took many trips throughout the United States and loved rock concerts.

 

Mary Beth has a soul that loves unconditionally.  That love was mirrored by the love that affected everyone who ever knew her - all of her family and friends – and she loved to make all of us laugh.

 

She is survived by her beloved blended family: daughter, Audra (Chuck Watterson) and their children, “Boo” Charles IV and wife Natalie, great-grandchild, Eleanor Ivy (who brought Mary Beth great joy); Jake Watterson and Maddy Watterson – and son, Joe Lewinski (Angela Pearce). 

 

Also, Tim (Melissa) Watterson and their children, Emma, Jared, and Grant Watterson; and Ben Watterson and his daughter, Sadie Watterson; and Mary Beth’s brother, Jim (Phoebe) Reed of Mills River, NC and sister, Janis (Richard) Rosenbaum of Rutherfordton, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

The family plans a private service and a memorial at later dates.

David Airy

David Airy, 69, of La Porte, passed away on Tuesday, November 16, 2021.  He was born in Iowa on June 7, 1952 to J. Eldon and Marjorie (Huff) Airy.  David graduated from Iowa State University in 1974 and married Christene Cook on June 7, 1975.

 

David was a Representative for ABS Global and retired in 2015.  He was a long-time wrestling coach at Boston Middle School.

 

David is survived by his wife and two sons, Todd and Brett (Tara) Airy.  He was a loving grandfather and is survived by granddaughters, Giana and Vivian Airy and grandsons, Bain and Quinn Airy.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

 

A Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering will be held from 3 - 5 p.m. on Friday, November 19, 2021 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

Winifred R. Kolar

Winifred R. Kolar, 98, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Monday, November 15, 2021. 

 

Winifred was born Thursday, March 15, 1923, in La Porte to Jacob and Rose (Mizar) Dreiner and resided here all her life. 

 

On July 5, 1947, she married George E. Kolar who preceded her in death on September 17, 2007.  Winifred and George were married 60 years.

 

Winifred was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.  She also worked many years as a legal secretary and was a member of Holy Family Parish, St. Peter Catholic Church.  She was a Cub Scout Leader, an avid swimmer who also enjoyed oil painting, reading, traveling, and was a member of the YMCA.

 

Winifred is survived by her daughters, Lynn A. Kolar of La Porte, Joan M. (Robert) Pisto of Comox, British Columbia, Canada; sons, David J. Kolar of La Porte, Michael D. (Helen) Kolar of Naperville, Illinois, Jan E. (Judy) Kolar of Wall Lake, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Timothy J. Kolar; sisters, Rosemary Sauers, Gertrude Boklund, Dorothy Hofherr, Jessie Bancsi; and brothers, Donald, Daniel, and Arthur Dreiner. 

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, November 19, 2021 at Holy Family Parish, St. Peter Catholic Church in La Porte. Reverend Nate Edquist will officiate.  Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery.

James "JB" Scooter Bigler

James "JB" Scooter Bigler, 46, of La Porte, passed away on Monday, November 15, 2021 at Northwest Health - La Porte.

 

JB was born on December 28, 1974 in Fort Morgan, CO, to Dennis Bigler and Pamela (Hall) Lackey.

 

Surviving JB are his children, Taylor Bigler, Cameron Bigler, Mason Bigler, and Stella Bigler, all of La Porte; 3 grandchildren, Tristen Oda, Leo Carmarillo, and Celina Carmarillo; significant other, Susan Rist; mother, Pamela Lackey; siblings, Louie Bigler, Bo Bigler, Matt Bigler, and Samantha Coon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Bigler.

 

JB was a painter for many years.  He enjoyed listening to Grateful Dead and Limp Bizkit.  JB was a sports fan, particularly the Cubs, Bears, and Broncos.  His family knew not to disturb him when he was watching Round the Horn.  JB will be fondly remembered for his great Chris Farley impersonation.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  Cremation will follow the service.

John  E. Houser

John  E. Houser, 76, passed away on Monday, November 15, 2021 at Life Care Center of Michigan City.

 

John was born on May 21, 1945 in Garrett, IN, to Wilson and Dora (Surfus) Houser.

 

On February 18, 1963 in Auburn, IN, he married Victoria "Vicky" who survives.  Also surviving are his son, Mark (Mary) W. Houser of Columbia City, IN; 2 granddaughters; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Janice E. Leas of Auburn, IN; sister-in-law, Deloris N. Houser of Auburn, IN; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Todd M. Houser; and brother, Marvin W. Houser.

 

John was a marine technician for many years and later retired from Bass Pro Shops.  He was a member of  the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association).  John built and enjoyed flying his Skylite ultralight aircraft.  He also enjoyed fishing and collecting model trains.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  A private family service and burial will take place at Cedar Creek Cemetery, Garrett, IN at a later date.

Douglas Neil Watson

Douglas Neil Watson, December 7, 1957-November 12, 2021, 63, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Friday, November 12, 2021 at his home.

 

He was born in Rensselaer, IN, on December 7, 1957, the son of Edward and Dorothy (Snow) Watson.

 

Doug served in Germany in the United States Army as a PFC, working in communications. He was honorably discharged in 1979 as a sharpshooter and M16 expert. While in Germany he worked with German Shepherds, having a love for them ever since. He moved to La Porte 34 years ago from Hope, Arkansas. On December 3, 1988, he married Charlotte (Stacy), who survives him. Doug was a chief inspector for Teledyne Casting. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, bagging deer, boar and coyotes, and was a huge Packers and Yankees fan.  Doug also rode a Harley and had a classic Chevelle convertible. He loved and was very happy bird watching and spending time with his precious grandchildren and very spoiled German Shepherd, Porter.

 

Along with his wife, Doug is survived by his son, Charles Anthony (Desiree) Stacy, Walkerton, IN; daughters, Tricia Watson, Magnolia, AR, Sarah (Cole) Drake, Magnolia, AR, Stefani Howard, Alabama; brother Lauren Sprague Jr.; sisters, Marina(Matt) Blivens, San Diego, CA, Coral Graham, St. George, Utah; grandchildren, Aubrey Stacy, U.S. Marine in training Nathan Stacy, Hunter Stacy, Paige Stacy, Emma Drake and Coby Drake.

 

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Lauren Sprague Sr.

Roger L. Pedzinski

Roger L. Pedzinski, 83, of La Porte, passed away unexpectedly at 6:53 p.m., Tuesday, November 9, 2021 in his home.

 

He was born November 20, 1937, in Michigan City, Indiana, to Louis and Beulah (Heins) Pedzinski.

 

Roger worked at the Budd Company in Gary for many years and then at PNC, where he took early retirement to care for his longtime companion, Kathleen Seip, when she became ill, until she preceded him in death in 2015.

 

Also preceding in death were his parents; and two siblings, Myron Pedzinski and Gayle Hart.

 

Surviving are his four children, Darlene (Scott) Games of Bacliff, TX, Brenda Perrin of Michigan City and Deanna Butzler-Pedzinski and Greg (Venise) Pedzinski both of Michigan City; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren.

 

He shared a special bond with granddaughter, Amber Grantham and cherished the time they spent together.

Donald Gene Miller, 87, passed away on Friday, November 5, 2021 at Golden Living Center La Porte.

 

Donald was born on May 12, 1934 in Crawfordsville, IN, to Wayne and Vera (Brown) Miller.

 

On August 27, 1956 in Ladoga, IN, he married Evelyn Bullock, who survives.  Also surviving are his children, James (Patty) Michael Miller, PhD of Portsmouth, OH, Steven Gene Miller of Canon City, CO and Melissa (Art) Lilly of La Porte; 4 grandchildren, Megan (Josh Artis) Miller of Portsmouth, OH, Michael Miller of Portsmouth, OH, Laramie Lilly of La Porte, and Liam Lilly of La Porte; brother-in-law, Paul Largent; sister-in-law, Janet Bullock; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents. 

 

Donald was a retired machinist from Grimm Mold & Die.  He was an avid reader and spent hours observing nature.

Barbara J. Hyde, 93, of La Porte, passed away on Friday, November 12, 2021 at Miller Health and Rehab. 

   

Barbara was born in La Porte, IN, on April 23, 1928 to Laurel J. and Edna (Fritzen) Weidman. 

 

On August 28, 1949 in La Porte, IN, she married Jack M. Hyde, who preceded her in death on December 27, 2019.  Surviving Barbara are her daughters, Sharon (Ken) Shilt of La Porte and Teresa (James) Turk of Valparaiso; 5 grandchildren, Brian (Kim) Jones of Toledo, OH, Jaime Jones of Plano, IL, Nathan (Chelsea Sunnarborg) Shilt of La Porte, Matthew Turk of South Bend, and Alyssa (Tyler) Nash of Carmel; 5 great-grandchildren, Zachary, Avery, Caleb, Kaylee, and Madison; as well as numerous nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Cynthia Hyde; and sister, Dorothy Lindborg.

 

Barbara was an elementary teacher for 17 years at Kingsbury Elementary.  She was a member of Beechwood Golf Club and Tri Kappa.  Barbara loved playing golf, but more importantly, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Mary Ann Finney

Mary Ann Finney, 64, of Walkerton, passed away peacefully at 10:20 a.m., Tuesday, November 9, 2021 in her home.

 

She was born February 21, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Marion (Armarlis) Gilroy.

 

Mary was an avid biker and motorcycle enthusiast. She was a dedicated wife, daughter, mother, sister, grandmother, and aunt.

 

On April 26, 1985, in the town of Pines in Indiana, she married her husband, Larry N. Finney, who survives.

 

Also surviving are her mother, Marion Mack of Hudson Lake; two children, Joshua Allen Finney of Westville and Elaine Marie Finney of Michigan City; one sister, Gwen Stayback of Mishawaka; three brothers, Sean Gilroy of Romeoville, IL, Jon Mack of Saugany Lake and Robert Gilroy Jr. of Hudson Lake; six grandchildren, Steven Lewis II, Stephanie Lewis, Sophie Lewis, Ajia (Anthony) Dominguez and Kayden and Dreden Finney; four great grandchildren, Syrus Finney, Steven Lewis III and Avalyn and Adrian Dominguez; special nieces, Tinisha (Travis) Wireman and Kyleigh Dickens; and nephew, Michael G. Finney.

 

Preceding in death were her father; and one sister, Heather Gilroy.

Troy Robert "Bob" Sanford

Troy Robert "Bob" Sanford, February 15, 1961-November 8, 2021, 60, of North Judson, Indiana, passed away Monday November 8, 2021 at Northwest Health-La Porte

 

He was born February 15, 1961 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Troy and Roberta (Hastings) Sanford.

 

On October 22, 1994, in Glenview, IL, Bob married Melissa Chapman Sanford.  Together they lived in Rolling Meadows, IL before moving to their dream farm in North Judson, IN., where Bob loved tending his goats and relaxing on his deck.  He was a member of the Rolling Meadows Christian Fellowship, the local IUOE Union 399, Chicago, and the Brushmasters, who did charitable work for Ronald McDonald House.  Bob was a Chief Engineer for McCormick Place, Chicago, but his true passion was cars. At one time he owned M & B Auto Body, Elgin, IL and Flatline Kustoms, Bloomingdale. IL. He was a member of the Voodoo Kings Car Club and was known to other car guys as "Santucci" or "Bondo Bob".  He loved drag racing, going to car shows, and restoring cars, adding as much color as he could.

 

Along with his wife, Melissa, Bob is survived by his father, Troy (Sue) Sanford; four daughters, Krystal (Scott Szpekowski) Sanford of Plymouth, IN, Jamie (Oleg) Krylov of Chicago, IL, Dena (Garrett) Laufenberg of Pewaukee, WI, Nikki (Jose Garcia) Sanford of Rolling Meadows, IL; sister, Sandie Sanford of Rolling Meadows; sister-in-law, JoAnne Sanford; eight grandchildren, Cody Szpekowski, Damian Garcia, Chandler Works, Melanie Garcia, Garrett Laufenberg, Owen Laufenberg, Alexander Krylov, Mila Rose Krylov; nieces, Krista and Jessica Sanford and Brittany(Alex) Hunter; great-niece, Renae.

 

Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Roberta Sanford and his brother, John Sanford.

Arthur Mathias

Arthur Mathias, July 31, 1942 - September 21, 2021, 79, of Dunedin, passed away on September 21, 2021 in St. Petersburg, FL.

 

Arthur (Art or Butch) was born in Michigan City, Indiana to Arthur and Margaret (Yeaney) Mathias on July 31, 1942. He graduated from LaPorte High School in Indiana. He worked as a technical writer for the Whirlpool Corporation in LaPorte, IN for 35 years before retiring to Tampa, Florida. Art was a sportsman - fishing, hunting, golf, bowling, basketball and baseball were some of his favorites. He also enjoyed drawing, taking his grandchildren to Busch Gardens, playing Yahtzee, completing Sudoku puzzles and watching game shows, especially Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and Price Is Right. He was a fan of the Bucs, the Lightning and the Rays and enjoyed watching them bring championships to the city.

 

Art is preceded in death by his parents, sister Patricia Janosky, brother Mike Mathias and nephew Brian Janosky.

 

Art is survived by his daughters, Julie (Jeff) Van Liew of Bradenton, FL; Janet (Bob) Archer of LaPorte, IN; grandchildren Kyle Van Liew and Jessica Van Liew; niece Terri Wisler; nephew Jason (Kelly) Mathias, cousins Claudia Green, Sheila Fikes and Diana Hunt.

Phyllis M.Waymire,  February 1, 1934 - November 6, 2021, 87, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2021 at her daughter's home in Lake Station, IN.

 

She was born February 1, 1934 in Fargo, North Dakota, the daughter of Russel Pownell and Gertrude (Spietz) Pownell.

 

A resident of the area since 1955, Phyllis moved here from North Dakota.  She was a Process Inspector for Howmet, retiring after 35 years in 1997.  On February 28, 1989, Phyllis married Herschel Waymire, who preceded her is death on Aug. 19, 2002.  She was a member of the Mill Creek First Baptist Church, The American Legion Auxiliary in Fish Creek, the VFW Auxiliary in North Liberty and the La Porte Moose. Phyllis amassed a huge collection of 3000 cookbooks, enjoyed going to the Senior Center to exercise, tending to her yard and rose bushes and listening to music

 

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Goodman of Lake Station, IN, Sheryl Tabor of Evansville, IN; two sons, Steven Mead of Knox, IN, Garry (Lou Ann) Waymire of Lady Lake, FL; grandchildren, Jason, Jakala, Jessica, Justin, Jessica, Doug, Donna and Gykala; and 10 great-grandchildren.

 

Along with her husband, Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Karen Bathaur; brother, Duane Pownell; three sisters, Bernice Arrett, Lois Falk, Evelyn Henry.

Judith Ann "Judy" Fredenburg, 81, of La Porte, passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2021 in La Porte, Indiana.

 

Judy was born on May 16, 1940 in Michigan City, IN, to George P. and Mary E. (Ingersoll) Finney.

 

Surviving Judy are her children, Laura Beach of La Porte, Kevin Carr of North Fond Du Lac, WI, and Lisa (Greg) Beebe of Goshen; and 4 grandchildren, Nick (Sarah) Beach, Ryan Beach, Zach Beebe, and Emma Beebe.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Juliann Scheberle.

 

Judy worked as an Administrative Assistant.  She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking, and gardening.  Judy was a big Chicago Cubs fan.

 

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 5 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  Cremation will follow the gathering.  Burial at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens will be scheduled at a later date.

Eleanor Marie Glenn, 72, of Walkerton, passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2021.

 

Eleanor was born on October 21, 1949 in Evergreen Park, IL, to Joseph John and Wanda Lee (Mick) Yagoda.

 

On December 20, 1980 in La Porte, IN, she married James Dale Glenn, who survives.  Also surviving are her children, Karen (Rick Wallace) Harness of Kingsford Heights, Donna (Michael) Spoth of Mentor, OH, Don (Roxanne) Gunter of Kingsford Heights, Kim Garay of La Porte, and Karen (Larry) Kneifel of Kingsbury; daughter-in-law, Jenny Gunter of La Porte; 16 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; siblings, Pat (Richard) Vermilyer of La Porte, Joe Yagoda of Niles, MI, and John (Lea) Yagoda of La Porte; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded by her parents; sister, Carol Lloyd; brother, Tom Yagoda; and son, Jerry Gunter.

 

Prior to becoming a homemaker, Eleanor worked hard at Howmet for almost 15 years and others before Howmet.  She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary.

 

Eleanor was a loving wife and sister.  She was an awesome mom.  Eleanor loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  No one could escape getting their photo taken for her memories.  Her family loved spending time with her as often as they could.  Eleanor made everyone laugh, whenever the family gathered.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Jere' Gowin  officiating.  Cremation will follow the service

On April 4, 1964, in La Porte, Janice married Melvin Hahn who preceded her in death on January 2, 2013. Surviving are her children, Lori (Tom Bagley) Lambert of La Porte, Jeff Lambert of Macon, Georgia, Kristi Hahn of La Porte, Jay (Chrissy) Hahn of Winnetka, Illinois; and grandchildren, Evan, Gannon, Taylor, Connor, Erin, and Alanna.

Shirley A. Berg,  April 29, 1944-November 4, 2021, 77, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Thursday, November 4, 2021 at her home at Aperion Care-Arbors of Michigan City.

 

She was born April 29, 1944 in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Lawrence Wright and Jennie (Stenson) Wright.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, Shirley graduated from La Porte High School. On June 16, 1978, she married Harley Berg, who preceded her in death on August 29, 2007.  Shirley retired from Walmart in La Porte after 18 years. Over the course of her life, she enjoyed bowling in leagues, playing Bingo, reading and doing word searches. You might find her at The Blue Chip or Four Winds Casino, playing a little poker, or sitting in her favorite chair, sipping a Pepsi and having a snack cake.

 

She is survived by her daughter, April (Joe Mark) Kuzmin of Michigan City, IN; son, Kyle (Elisabeth) Berg of La Porte, IN; three grandchildren, Brittany Bogart, Brandy Bogart, Chloe Kuykendall and great-grandchild, Chandler Bogart.

 

In addition to her husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and her 3 brothers, Melvin, Ken and Charles Wright.

Martin David Brennan, January 9, 1951-October 29, 2021,  70, of Knox, Indiana, passed away Friday October 29, 2021 at Northwest Health-La Porte in La Porte, IN.

 

He was born January 9, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Gerald Brennan and Dorothy (Hoynes) Brennan.

 

Martin was a Life-Long Canaryville resident. Martin was a rider and loved to ride his motorcycle. He attended many bike events throughout Illinois and heard he made the trip to Sturgis for the "World's Largest Motorcycle" Rally. Once he was unable to ride his bike, he took up 4-wheelers and golf carts. But everyone will agree that Martin's passion was his family truly enjoying his time with them. He will be greatly missed.

 

He is survived by his two daughters, Christine (Kelly) O'Neill, and Sandy (Brian) Gagen; two brothers, Kenneth (MaryAnne) Brennan, Joseph Brennan; three sisters, Judith Biesek, Dorothy (Joe) Boyd, Bernadine (John-Deceased) Ryan; five grandchildren, Ashley O'Neill (Zak), Michael Gagen (Heather), Kelly O'Neill, Jr., RiannaGagen (Bailey), Amber Freeman (Tony); three great-grandchildren, Angel, Abel, Amias (Smiley).

James Robert Shei

James Robert Shei, 74, of Hanna, Indiana passed away Wednesday, November 3, 2021.

 

James was born September 22, 1947, to Harold Les and Rose Mary (Mills) Shei. 

 

On July 24, 1970, James married Sherry Beahler.  James and Sherry were married for 51 years.  After High School he served in the US Army as a Sergeant.  He was employed with Co-Alliance (formally Ag-Reliance) and was a lifelong farmer.  He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wanatah, the American Legion, Post #472 in Hanna, and the DAV Chapter 102.

 

James is survived by his wife Sherry; a son, Jason Shei of Hanna, and daughter Jenifer (Randy) Filo of Hanna; his father, Harold Les Shei of Hanna; grandchildren, Sydney Shei, Sara Shei, Kylie Filo, Taylor Filo, Michael Filo, Andrew Shei; a brother, John (Connie) Shei of La Porte; and a sister, Mary Beth (Jerry) Harness of Hanna.  He was preceded in death by his mother.

Stephen "Steve" Dwight Edgington, 68, of Michigan City, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at Northwest Health - La Porte.

 

Steve was born on September 17, 1953, in Hammond, IN, to Miles and Mary (Fancil) Edgington. 

 

On May 31, 1975, in La Porte, he married Hazel E. Moore who survives.  Also surviving are his daughter, Brande Edgington of Warsaw; granddaughter, Ashlynn Potter of Michigan City; 2 great-grandchildren, Zaidin Carter and Zamiah Hunt: sister, Carolyn Shields; brother, Jerry Gomez; girlfriend, Carlene Kniola; Carlene's children, Debbie, Scottie, and Mike; Carlene's grandchildren, Carson, Collin, Liam, Aiden, McKaila, Marquan, Destiny, and Jackson;  as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded by his parents and sister, Debbie Moser

 

Steve attended grade school at Kingsford Heights Elementary School.  He later attended and graduated from La Porte High School.

 

Steve proudly served in the U.S. Army for 3 years.  He worked at and retired from the railroad; working as a signal maintainer for 15 years.  After the railroad, Steve owned his own construction company for 27 years.

 

He was a member of Full Gospel Church of Deliverance for 7 years, under the teachings of Pastor Dennis Pickens.  Steve was also a member of the Kingford Height's American Legion.

 

Steve loved to play golf and work outside in his lawn.  He took great pride in his lawn care.  Steve was a die hard Chicago Bears fan.  He loved family cookouts and enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, especially giving them tractor rides.  Steve's friends were also a priority to him.

 

Steve was married to his wife, Hazel, for 45 years.  His daughter, Brande, will always be "Daddy's little girl".  Steve would do anything for his daughter.  When younger, he affectionately called Brande, "Little Boo Boo".  Steve's granddaughter, Ashlynn, will always be his "Babygirl"  His great grandson, Zaidin, will always be his "Little Man", while his great granddaughter, Zamiah, will always be his "Little Princess".  Steve loved to take walks on the beach with his girlfriend, Carlene, the love of his life, and had a great relationship with Carlene's daughter, Debbie.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 15, 2021 at Full Gospel Church of Deliverance with Pastor Dennis Pickens officiating.  Cremation will follow the service.  Burial will follow at a later date.

Kathleen Lorraine Schimmel

Kathleen Lorraine Schimmel, 53, of New Carlisle, passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at Northwest Health - La Porte. 

   

Kathleen was born in Michigan City, IN, on July 13, 1968 to David Cripe and Betty Jean McIntosh. 

 

Surviving Kathleen are her children, Anastasia Bailey of New Carlisle, Zachary Bailey of North Liberty, and Benjamin Schimmel of La Porte; 16 grandchildren; mother, Betty Jean McIntosh; father, David Cripe Sr; 2 sisters; 1 brother; partner, Ron Gerald; hundreds of loved ones; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was a Landscape Architect for many years.   Kathleen enjoyed landscaping, bargain shopping, and being outdoors.  She also enjoyed baking Christmas cookies, baking thousands of cookies each year.  Kathleen loved feeding everyone, including hosting Sunday family dinners.  To her children, she was a counselor, hero, their "go-to", and the strongest, bravest woman that they knew.  For her partner, Ron, she was his sunshine, his life and his one and only.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Claire Marie (Cannon) Passafume

Claire Marie (Cannon) Passafume was born June 17, 1945, in Saint Joseph Hospital to William and Florence Cannon of South Bend, Indiana. One month later, she was baptized at the Church of St. Joseph in South Bend, Indiana by Father Salvatore Fanelli.

 

Claire graduated from Rolling Prairie High School on May 20, 1965 and married her beloved Dan in St. Peter’s Catholic Church on October 1, 1966. They would spend the next 53 years together working and living in Florida, Michigan, and Indiana, traveling throughout North America in their trusty travel trailer, and even cruising to the Caribbean on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.

 

As an adult, Claire liked baking and canning, collecting dolls, playing online games and word searches, reading, traveling with her husband Dan to some of their favorite places like Mackinac Island and Frankenmuth in Michigan and Niagara Falls in New York, and spending time with friends, family, and the many fur babies they cared for along the way.

 

Claire was a loving and playful daughter, sister, niece, wife, aunt, and friend who left her husband, Dan, too soon.

 

Claire is survived by her brothers Michael (Dee) Cannon and John (Mary Ann) Cannon both of Rolling Prairie, Indiana and sisters, Kathleen (Curtis) Holmes of Elkhart, Indiana, and Karen (Ray) Garrett of LaPorte, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents William and Florence (DeVleeschower) Cannon and her sisters, Margaret Carlson and Mary Hites.

 

Claire and Dan planned to spend the rest of their golden years exploring the sites and sounds of North America from their travel trailer. Since they can no longer venture on this journey, they hope that you can provide this journey to children in need by donating to KOA Care Camps in their memory.

Daniel "Danny" Charles Passafume

Daniel “Danny” Charles Passafume was born January 12, 1942, in Holy Family Hospital to Angelo and Josephine Passafume of La Porte, Indiana. Seven months later, he was baptized at St. Joseph’s Church in La Porte, Indiana by Father August Van Rie and exactly five years to the day of his birth on January 12, 1947, he received a baby sister.

 

As a child, Danny enjoyed swimming, watching cartoons, playing baseball in Warsaw field, and keeping his little sister away from his toy trains. As a teen, he enjoyed playing basketball, singing in choir, and participating in a few practical jokes with his older brother, Michael, at Central Junior High School. He also enjoyed playing football at La Porte High School and spending some summers with his Uncle Frank, Aunt Thelma and cousins Billy and Mary Passafume in Spring Valley, Illinois.

 

As a young adult, Daniel enjoyed swimming, horseback riding, and golfing with his father, Angelo. He was a gym teacher at St. Joseph School, a lifeguard at Deluxe Swim Club and a coach for the three parish Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) all-girls baseball team. He and Jim Sweeney, who wound up serving as best man at his and Claire’s wedding, chaperoned their sisters, Sally and Dee, and family friend, Pat Fagan, at the CYO national convention in New York City, New York.

 

On October 1, 1966, Danny married his beloved Claire in St. Peter’s Catholic Church. They would spend the next 53 years together working and living in Florida, Michigan, and Indiana, traveling throughout North America in their trusty travel trailer, and even cruising to the Caribbean on their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.

 

As an adult, Danny liked collecting model trains, baking, cooking, and eating frog legs, listening to music, playing board games, meeting new people, traveling with his wife Claire, spending time with friends, family, and the many fur babies they cared for along the way, like Fifi and Mandi, watching cartoons, Christmas movies, home improvement shows, Olympic sports and Notre Dame Football and beating his sister every year at their annual birthday contest. You could hear the smile on Danny’s face as he greeted his sister at 12:01 a.m. every January 12 with, “Happy birthday to me.”

 

Danny was a loving and playful son, brother, nephew, husband, uncle, and friend. He loved life and wanted the best for everyone he met. Unfortunately, Danny lost his Claire on November 26, 2019, and joined her shortly thereafter on June 30, 2021.

 

Danny is survived by his sister Sally Passafume (Peting) of La Porte, Indiana, five nieces - Daniella Nicol Peting of Chicago, Illinois, Gabriella Lucianna Dobinson of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Alliegra Christiana Hand and Raphaella Francesca De La Fuente both of La Porte, Indiana, and Kellie Brown of Orange City, Florida, four great-nephews - Walter Gerald Dobinson IV of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Francesco Luis De La Fuente and David Jonah Hand both of La Porte, Indiana, and Brandon Brown of Orlando, Florida, one great-niece - Samantha Passafume of Detroit, Michigan and two nephews - Tony Passafume of La Porte, Indiana and Michael Passafume, Jr. of Franklin, North Carolina.

 

Danny is preceded in death by his wife, Claire (Cannon) of Elkhart, Indiana, his brother, Michael Passafume of Orlando, Florida, and his parents, Angelo and Josephine (Trojanowski) Passafume of La Porte, Indiana.

 

Before Claire passed, Danny and Claire made plans to travel the U.S. in their recreational vehicle. Since they enjoyed traveling and spending time in KOA campgrounds, they’d like to be remembered by donating to KOA Care Camps.

Ronnie H. Preston

Ronnie H. Preston, 74, of New Buffalo, Michigan, passed away at 9:10 a.m., Thursday, October 28, 2021, at Northwest Health, La Porte, Indiana.

 

He was born August 24, 1947, in Oneida, Tennessee, to Elmer and Edith (Hall) Preston.

 

Also preceding in death his parents; three sons, Roy Vittatoe, Mitchell Preston, and Cary Walker; and one brother, Thomas Preston.

 

On May 21, 1970, in La Porte, Indiana, he married Margie Lena (Davis) Preston, who preceded him in death on January 5, 2000.

 

Surviving are his four children, Doug (Kathy) Walker of Elkhart, Margie (Robert) Shepard and William Vittatoe both of Johnson City, TN and Julie (Jody Glossinger) Preston of New Buffalo, MI; one brother, Harrison Preston; six sisters, Wanda, Tiny, Dixie, MaryRuth, Margaret and Michelle; 19 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

 

Ronnie worked for Independent Steel Castings, New Buffalo, MI, for 30 years, as Foundry and Factory Supervisor. He was a devoted member of the American Legion Post 169, New Buffalo, MI. Ronnie volunteered his time and helped with the fish fry for the legion.  While volunteering at the legion, he made a lot of friends and memories along the way. He enjoyed hunting, shooting pool, fishing, time with family and friends, scratch-off tickets, and the daily news.

 

Every day for the past 8 years he has been the best papaw to Jayce Glossinger and Holleah Preston. Giving so much love and memories to cherish, from bouncy chairs to kissing booboos, playing unicorn, and watching Monday Night Raw. Rest in heaven papaw, thank you for all the love that filled our family.

 

Cremation will take place. A celebration of his life will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday, November 13, 2021 at American Legion Post 169, 19121 US HWY 12, New Buffalo, Michigan, 49117. Randall J. Gould, 55, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2021.

 

Randall was born on April 25, 1966, in Pomona, California to Joseph Gould and the late Gayle (Hilton) Gould.

 

On April 25, 2008, Randall married Tina Marie Wilson who survives.  Randall and Tina were married for 13 years. 

 

Randall is survived by his children; Jennifer (Stephen) Suthard, of Rochester, Janelle (Daniel) Whitaker of La Porte, Callie Jordan of Walker, Minnesota, Tosha (Amy) Sailors of Michigan City, Starla Lynch of La Porte, and Randall Gould ll of La Porte; his father, Joseph Gould of Walker, Minnesota; brothers, Jeffery Gould of Elkhart, Russell (Elisa) Gould of Elkhart, Rodney (Sonja) Gould of La Porte; and a sister, Laura Gould-Smith of Walker, Minnesota.  Randall had several grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his mother and sister Tina Gould.

Antoinette "Toni" de Rover

Antoinette “Toni” de Rover, 92, of La Porte, Indiana passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Sunday, October 31, 2021. 

 

Toni was born on February 4, 1929, in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Carl and Sophia (Kominiarek) Wisnieski.

 

On June 15, 1957, Toni married Robert de Rover who preceded her in death on December 25, 2010. She is survived by daughters, Renee (Doug) Buell of Michigan City, Indiana, Janet Wegiel of La Porte, Laura de Rover of La Porte, Nancy de Rover of Michigan City, Indiana; grandchildren, Dylan, Damon, Keith, Brianna, Cheyenne, Mallory, Natalie; great grandchildren, Calem, Noah, Molly, Nickolas, Roman, Maverick, and Tripp; a brother, Wallace (Joann) Wisnieski of La Porte; and a sister, Barbara Moritz.  She was preceded in death by her siblings, Carl Wisnieski Jr., and Charlotte Wallen.

 

Toni graduated from Ball State University in 1952 with a Bachelor of Education degree and a minor in music.  She taught elementary school as well as music and art. Toni was an accomplished violinist.  Upon graduating from Ball State, she became Concertmistress of the South Bend Symphony. She was a founding member of the La Porte Symphony Orchestra where she was the Concertmistress for many years.  Additionally, she gave private violin lessons in her home. She opened the Learning Express in La Porte.  In 1984, she was awarded Woman of the Week.  When she turned 80, she began knitting scarves to donate to the shelters, elementary schools, or anyone in need.  She also knitted booties which she sent to St. Jude's Hospital.  She continued this until her passing.  In all, she knitted and donated over 1200 scarves. 

 

Toni never stopped thinking about her daughters.  Frequently, she would text them pictures of articles from magazines with all kinds of advice- from which vitamins to take to which foods to avoid. Every Monday night her daughters would receive a text message reminding them that America's Got Talent was on.

Her grandchildren were her pride and joy.  When they visited, they knew Grandma would have plenty of food.  It made her smile to see them enjoying her homemade meals. She introduced all of them to her passion of playing video games. She was always young at heart.

 

In 1983, Bob and Toni bought a house on Lake Whittmer and nothing made them happier than having the whole family there.  In recent years, she enjoyed playing with her great grandchildren, teaching them songs, and swinging with them on her deck.  She will be missed dearly.

 

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, November 5, 2021, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana, where a Parish Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 6, 2021, at Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph Church, 109 C. Street, La Porte, Indiana. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in La Porte.

Donald George Helmken

Donald George Helmken, June 10, 1933-October 30, 2021, 88, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Northwest Health-La Porte.

 

He was born June 10, 1933 in Michigan City, Indiana, the son of Harold Helmken and Ann (Hansen) Helmken.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, Donald graduated from Elston High School in Michigan City, before serving in the United States Navy, helping to protect our country during the cold war.   A baptized and confirmed Catholic, he was a member of the St Stanislaus Church in Michigan City, where he was involved in the St. Joe Club. On September 14, 1963, Donald married his loving wife of 58 years, Phyllis (Witowski) Helmken, who survives him.  Don retired over 20 years ago as a machinist with Joy Manufacturing. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and fishing. Donald's greatest passion was his family, especially his grandchildren and his beloved Maltese, Bella. 

 

In addition to his wife, Donald is survived by his son, Brad (Lisa) Helmken of La Porte, IN; daughters, Penny (John) Utpatel of Michigan City, IN and Valerie Cuzick of Knoxville TN; sister, Sue (Jack) Keller of Michiana Shores, IN; ten grandchildren, Brandon (Ariana) Helmken, Katelin Helmken, Luke Helmken, Stephanie (Corey) Gadd, Nicholas King, Hunter Friedrich, Cody Friedrich, Collin (Jennifer) Dingman, Casie Dingman, Cayla Dingman and 9 great-grandchildren.

 

Donald was preceded in death by his parents and his baby daughter, Tamara Marie Helmken.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN where the family will receive friends from 11:00a.m. -1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2021, with a Rosary at 12:45.  Interment will follow at the St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Michigan City, Indiana.

Rose M. Gerrish March 19, 1920-October 31, 2021101, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Sunday, October 31, 2021 at Aperion Care-Arbors of Michigan City, IN.

 

She was born March 19, 1920 in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan, the daughter of Clifford LaJoice and Flora (LaMieux) LaJoice.

 

She was a long-standing member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Michigan devoted to her Catholic faith. Rose was honored to be the longest living member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Michigan before moving to Indiana. She was a member of the Women's Bowling League in Sault Saint Marie, MI. for 54 years. She was a member of the country club, golf leagues, and bridge club. She enjoyed golfing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, reading and gardening.

 

On April 11, 1940, in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan, she married Andrew Gerrish who preceded in death.

 

She is survived by her two daughters, Ann Marie (Thomas) Bour of La Porte, IN, Brenda (William) Stratton of Norton Shores, MI; a son, Robert (Fran) Gerrish of Jackson, MI; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

 

Rose was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Florence Braun, sister, Ellma Rand, and a son Paul Gerrish.

Wayne Kemker

Wayne Kemker, June 11, 1945 - October 26, 2021, 76, of Henderson and formerly of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021. 
 
He retired from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department in 1999 as a Homicide Detective after serving 30 years on the department. He was a Navy Veteran and was a trained parachute rigger.  He also was employed by the Golden Nugget where he retired in 2019.
 
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Angela; one daughter, Jennifer of Las Vegas and one son, Thomas of Las Vegas.
 
Palm Mortuary-Boulder Highway is in charge of funeral arrangements.  There will be no viewing.  A mass will be said at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 2300 Sunridge Heights Pkwy., Henderson, NV on November 9, 2021. 

 

Richard L. Games

Richard L. Games, 70, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Sunday, October 31, 2021.

 

Richard was born April 25, 1951, in La Porte, Indiana to George J. and Delores A. (Crutchfield) Games.

 

Richard was a 1969 graduate of La Porte High School and he attended Purdue University.  Richard was a professional truck driver.  He was a member of Moose Lodge 980 in Michigan City, an Eagle Scout, and a member of the First United Methodist Church.

 

Richard is survived by his mother, Delores Games of New Carlisle; a sister, LeAnn (Richard) Craig of Estero, Florida; a brother, George C. (Kathy) Games of Portage, Indiana; nieces and nephews, Lindsay (Matt) Sterling, Courtney (Dennis) Lashbrook, Ryan Clem, Tyler (Rachel) Games, and Alexa (Patrick) Copeland. He was preceded in death by his father, George J. Games.

Robert Lewis Chance, Jr.,  65, of Rolling Prairie, IN passed away on Friday, October 29, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his family; Father Paul Silva, LC; and Father Robert DeCesare, LC.

 

Robert was born on January 9, 1956 in Detroit, MI, to Robert Lewis and Margaret Therese (Gelineau) Chance.

 

On April 13, 1985 in Spokane, WA, he married Colleen Cools who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Melissa (Frank) Lindquist of Rolling Prairie, IN, Catherine Chance of Buffalo, NY, Hannah (Ben) O'Brien of Laconia, NH, Thomas Chance of Rolling Prairie, IN, and Rosemarie Chance of Rolling Prairie, IN; 2 granddaughters, Amelia and Violet; siblings, Julia Gustafson of Wooster, OH

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janet Hanneman; and brother-in-law, Brian Gustafson.

 

Robert was a teacher for 13 years at Sacred Heart Apostolic School.  Prior to that, he taught for 16 years at Marquette High School in Ottawa, IL.  Robert loved teaching and the students he taught!

 

Robert was a member of St. John Kanty Catholic Church.  He was a man of great faith, making it central to his whole life.

 

He enjoyed camping, reading, and playing chess and pinochle.  Robert especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 5, 2021, at St. John Kanty Catholic Church with Father Heimer officiating.  Burial will follow at St. John Kanty Catholic Cemetery.

Jennifer Rae Wunder, 34, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Thursday, October 28, 2021. 

 

She was born on April 25, 1987, in Munster, Indiana.

 

Jennifer holds a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Ivy Tech, Valparaiso, Indiana. She was employed with Franciscan Health in Michigan City as a Registered Nurse. She was a member of Tracy Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hamlet, Indiana.

 

On September 18, 2010, Jennifer married Matt Wunder who survives with their son, Jackson Albert Wunder; her mother, Terry Byrns-Earle of Lowell, Indiana; siblings, Dawn (Bill) Boldman of Bremen, Indiana, Mike Bultema of Lowell, Indiana, Greg (Jen) Bultema of Chesterton, Indiana, Kristina Earle of Loveland, Ohio; niece and nephew, Victory and Vaughn Boldman; and her in-laws, Bud and Jacquie Wunder of Kingsford Heights, Indiana.
