Richard "Rich" Luther Pennington

Richard “Rich” Luther Pennington, 50, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at Northwest Health La Porte.
Rich was born on February 18, 1975, in La Porte, IN, to Roy and Tonya (Vermilyer) Pennington.  He grew up with a big heart, a contagious laugh, and an endless love for his family and friends.
Surviving are his 5 children, Cody, Cory (Charlie), Bailee, Brooklyn, and Reid Pennington, all of La Porte; mother, Tonya Pennington of La Porte; 6 siblings, Dora (Kalvin) Jones, Roy “Buddy” (Tiffany) Pennington, Amanda “Mandy” (Tim) Pennington, Carl (Nikole) Pennington, Lisa (David) Sanchez, and Alan (Jessica) Weaver, all of La Porte; his forever love, Kristen Timm and her 3 children, Maddux, Garrett, and Addison; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Harold Pennington, Sr., and grandparents, Janet Vermilyer and Luther and Dora Pennington.

Rich worked as a crane operator.  He enjoyed playing basketball, football, and visiting the casino.  Rich was the kind of person who could fill a room with laughter.  Always ready with a joke or a funny story, he had a gift for making people smile and loved being the one to lift everyone’s spirits.  A true jokester at heart, he shared his humor generously with his friends and family. As a teen, weekends were spent sneaking out of the house with his buddies to get into mischief, which usually ended in good fun most of the time.  Rich could be stubborn; that was part of his charm, but beneath that stubborn streak was a heart that cared deeply.  If you were in trouble, he was there!  You needed a laugh, Rich had the jokes, or if you simply needed him to be there.  Family meant everything to him. He was a devoted father who adored his five children and took pride in every moment with them.  Being a Dad is what he enjoyed the most on this earth, and he was good at it!  His nieces and nephews absolutely adored their fun-loving uncle, and his friends were like his family, too.  Rich’s warmth, laughter, and love will continue to echo in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Monroe Jones officiating.
A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service, where family and friends are invited to share stories and laughter in his memory.  Cremation will take place following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Rich by donating to a cause he cared about.

His laughter may be gone from our ears, but it will live forever in our hearts.
Condolences may be shared with the family on www.cutlercares.com.

After 10 years in Portland, Andrew moved back to LaPorte to be closer to family. He resumed working at All Star Autos again in the Detail Manager position, where he worked until he passed.

He wrote music, created unique drawings and works of art, he also authored short stories and poetry. He loved fishing and campfires, and riding his side-by-side around his parents’ property.

The most important thing to Andrew was his family. From the time he was young, he cherished annual family ski trips to Crystal Mountain. He loved family holidays, dinners, weddings, and getting together for birthdays. He never missed an event to support his family or close friends. He loved road trips, cooking, making the gravy for Thanksgiving, attending Cubs games, Chicago Bulls games, and relishing the get-togethers he talked about for months.

Crystal Mullins

Crystal Mullins, a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and fierce soul, passed away on October 22, 2025, in Laporte, Indiana. Born on January 16, 1978, Crystal lived every day in her own way. Bold, spontaneous, and full of fire.

Life didn’t go easy on Crystal, but Damn, she never backed down. She faced every storm with her head held high, a laugh that could break the silence, and a little spark of sass that made everyone around her smile. She was raw and real, no masks, no pretending what you saw was what you got: honesty, strength, and a heart that loved hard.

She wasn’t scared of much, maybe heights, but even then, she’d probably still climb, just to prove she could. She loved deeply and unapologetically, finding joy and simple freedoms: painting, cracking jokes, hopping on the back of a motorcycle, or hitting the road for an adventure. The world was brighter because she existed, and it’s a little dimmer now without her fire lighting it up.

Those who knew her will never forget the sound of her laughter, the twinkle in her eyes when she teased someone she loved, or her little quirks, like a Mountain Dew in hand and a bag of Funyuns with a Slim Jim close by, and that contagious energy felt in any room she walked into.

Crystal lived through her children, Nicholas, Kalee, Rhodes, Amber, Michael, Maruszczak, and Alexis Choromokos, and her grandchildren, Lucien, Ivory, Luna, Baker, and Gracie, who lovingly knew her as “Mimi.” She has also lived through her siblings, Josh, Kandye, Joyce, and Vonda Mullins…

She was called home to her parents, John and Elizabeth (Armstrong) Mullins, and her sister, Karen Mullins.

Crystal’s story is one of love, laughter, strength, and resilience. Though her time here ended far too soon, her spirit will live on through her family, her friends, and the memories that will forever carry her wild, beautiful, and unforgettable light…

Betty A. Heines

Betty A. Heines, 90, of LaPorte, IN, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Brickyard LaPorte Care Center with her daughter by her side.

She was born February 24, 1935, in Lockney, Texas, to Joel B. Nance and Jewel Pool. She lived in the community of Lone Star, Texas, attending Lone Star School until it closed. She finished high school in Silverton, TX, graduating in 1952. Betty attended a business college in Plainview, TX, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1953. Upon graduating boot camp in Bainbridge, MD, she headed to Jackson, FL, for Airmen’s School and from there to Pensacola, FL, to Photographer’s School. It was while attending Photographer’s School that she met the love of her life, G. Howard Heines. Betty loved to tell all who asked that she and Howard met in the “dark room.” Betty and Howard were married on November 13, 1954. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, Betty and Howard moved to South Bend, IN, for Howard’s employment. In 1957, the family moved to a small farm in Lakeville, IN.

Betty and Howard had three children, Richard, Joel, and Sheryl. After Sheryl entered elementary school, Betty began working for the Union North United School Corporation, where she worked for 32 years as a secretary-treasurer at the elementary school. She retired from the school system in 1999.

Betty had a heart of gold and loved serving people. She was involved in her church and wanted more than anything to share the love of her Lord and Savior with others. She served as facilitator for the H.O.P.E. prison ministry, which sent correspondence courses to the incarcerated. She was the co-founder of the Lakeville Chapter T.O.P.S. (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Club, where she lost weight to her goal in less than a year and kept it off for over fifty years. She earned several recognitions for this accomplishment and a trip to the national meeting on her 25th anniversary.

Betty was a member of the Red Hat Society. She exercised daily and loved doing water therapy at the Life Plex in Plymouth. She and seven other neighborhood women, called the “Club Gals,” met often to visit, play games, and eat, forming a bond that lasted for close to 50 years. She was a faithful member of the Marshall County Church of Christ. Always wanting to serve, she sent cards, made phone calls, and did various other things to bring encouragement and hope to their members and the surrounding community.

In the last few years of Betty’s life, she developed dementia. Even through her difficulties, she continued to be a bright light to her family and others who knew her. There was no doubt that when Betty’s light ceased to shine on this side of heaven, she had touched hearts, changed lives, and finished well. Left to cherish Betty’s memory are her three children, Richard (Marci) Heines, Joel (Elaine Cassala) Heines, and Sheryl (Ben) Baker; 15 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and a host of friends and loved ones.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Joel and Jewell Nance, her brothers and sisters, her husband Howard Heines, and her great-granddaughter Zaza Evangeline Heines.
