Obituaries Archives for 2024-11

Fran Thompson

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Fran Thompson, our loving and devoted mother, and friend to all whose lives she touched, on November 26, 2024, surrounded by family.

Born in Tangier, Morocco, on April 7, 1953, Fran began her journey into this world as a fighter, overcoming Scarlet Fever as an infant and continuing to face life's challenges with unyielding strength until her final days.

Fran was preceded in death by her beloved husbands Joe Gniadek and Jeff Thompson, and her cherished parents, Kenneth and Angie Kier. She is survived by her three children, Monica McCombs (and her “favorite son-in-law” John), Kenny Thompson, and Brie Thompson, whom she adored wholeheartedly. Her legacy of love and laughter also lives on through her siblings: Angie Kier, Aimee Lincicome, John Kier, Kenny Kier, and Marta Kier.

Fran never met a stranger. Her warmth was felt through her spontaneous hugs, her infectious laugh, and the joy she brought to everyone she encountered. She lived for life's simple pleasures: baking treats, music, attending concerts, cherishing her fur grandbabies, taking long walks, making snow angels, celebrating the 4th of July, and sharing time with her dear friends. A social butterfly, she was always up for a good party.

She held a special place in her heart for our nation’s veterans and was deeply proud of their service. In honor of Fran's memory, her family requests donations be made to the VFW or American Kidney Fund in lieu of flowers.

Fran was taken from us far too soon, but her radiant spirit and unwavering love will forever remain in our hearts. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A memorial service will be held at 3 PM on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Ave. Visitation will be from 1 PM until the time of service at the funeral home on Sunday.

Mayme Marie Stump, 91, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully with family at Brentwood on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

Mayme was born August 25, 1933, to Walter and Mina (Faris) Ewert in Vincennes, IN.  She studied at Lanphier High School in Springfield, Illinois, graduating as the valedictorian.  After, she attended Indiana Central College (now the University of Indianapolis) and graduated magna cum laude in English Education in 1955.  At Indiana Central, Mayme was featured in the 1954-1955 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."  She also served as editor-in-chief of the campus yearbook, president of the English Club, and president of the Philalethea Literary Society.  She was nominated Campus Queen from 1954 to 1955.

Mayme married the love of her life Perry Stump on August 27, 1955, who preceded her in death on December 4, 2020, after celebrating 65 years together.  They are survived by all four of their children: Terri (Jeff) Hundt of La Porte, IN; Greg Stump (Bunny Nash) of Concord, NC; Tammy Stump of La Porte, IN; and Wendy (Stump) McNamara of Evansville, IN.  Also surviving are their two grandchildren: Sarah Hundt (Blake Childs); and Kevin Hundt.

After settling in La Porte with her family in 1961, Mayme taught English at Boston Junior High School, Kesling Junior High School, and La Porte High School, educating thousands of students over her decades-long career.  Early in her teaching tenure, Mayme attended graduate school, receiving her Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Valparaiso University in 1969.  Impressed by her teaching abilities, businesses at Kingsbury Industrial Park asked Mayme to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to some of their employees.  Her first class, held in 1978, was comprised of adult learners from Poland and Mexico, growing over the years to include students from twenty-four different countries.  In a time when few ESL teaching materials were available, Mayme created her lesson plans to ensure each of her students excelled.

Mayme was listed in the 1989-1990 edition of "Who's Who in American Education," and she retired from full-time teaching in 1991.  She also received a Certificate of Achievement for outstanding contributions to English Works in Indiana, conferred by Governor Frank O'Bannon on August 26, 2000.  The La Porte Herald-Argus highlighted Mayme's commendable teaching experience in a feature article in 2001.  She joined a prestigious international society for women educators as a member of the Gamma Kappa Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, once holding the role of Secretary.

An active member of her community, Mayme belonged to the Ruth Andrew Coffeen Poetry Club and served on the board of the La Porte chapter of People to People International, planning international tours for members.  Wishing to spread the joy of music, she was a board member of the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra and a member of Friends of the Symphony.

Mayme belonged to the First United Methodist Church of La Porte, teaching Sunday school for several years.  She served as a chairperson of the Wesley Ann Circle and led the United Methodist Women as President.  For many years, she played in the Gloria Handbell Choir with her daughter and granddaughter, helping to arrange a performance tour for the handbell choir in 1995 to churches in England, Wales, and Scotland.

Mayme loved to travel with her husband and family, having visited all the continents except Antarctica.  Some of her favorite trips included Australia, New Zealand, China, and Sweden.  She was a fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls and held a lifelong passion for game shows and chocolate.  Mayme especially loved spending time with her family and hosted exchange students Jan, Cecilia, and Nici, continuing these treasured relationships for over 45 years through the present day.

Norma L. Gushrowski

On Saturday, November 16th, 2024, Norma Lucille (Knoll) Gushrowski passed away peacefully with her family at her bedside. As a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandma, Norma spent 94 wonderful years spreading joy to all around her.
Norma was born on May 28th, 1930, in Michigan City, Indiana, to Andrew and Helen (Lasky) Knoll. She was the fourth of ten children. Known for her charm, Norma caught the eye of a groomsman, Alfred Gushrowski, while standing in as a bridesmaid for his little sister and her dear friend, Arlene.  Despite the priest thinking they didn’t pair well to walk down the aisle together, Alfred pursued Norma, and within six weeks of dating, they were engaged to be married.  As the first couple to be married at Queen of All Saints Church, their strong commitment to their faith carried them to nearly seven decades of love and devotion to QAS
serving as a home for many special family moments.  Together they raised their five children in the Catholic faith surrounded by an extensive, loving, and boisterous extended family that grew into many grandchildren. While it was known her laugh could be heard from miles away, Norma also lit up her kitchen with the sound of music, dancing along to Polka Hour every Sunday.  Her talents were far and wide, ranging from serving as one of the founders of the Trail Creek Booster News in the community to the creator of the most delicious chicken noodle soup and tasty grasshopper pie in her own home. She was always very dedicated, never missing one of her grandchildren’s school or sporting events or an opportunity to babysit.  Her fridge was always stocked with treats and her camera was full of film, capturing every moment including the infamous annual family Christmas photo.  Her love for pictures continued as she moved into Rittenhouse Assisted Living and was known by the staff for her wall bursting with pictures of her family.  A loving, witty, and wonderful woman until the very end, she will be greatly missed.
Surviving is her sister, Alberta “Bert” Clouse; five children Mary Kay (Jeffrey) Hanke, Thomas (Stacey) Gushrowski, Linda (Daryl) Pomranke, Jerry (Kathy) Gushrowski, and Jim Gushrowski; 11 grandchildren, Mara (James) Kasuboski, Joseph (Lindsey) Gushrowski, Courtney (James) McNeill, Elizabeth Fowler, Benjamin Hanke, Andrew (Annie) Pomranke, Matthew Pomranke, Kristen (Trent) Kern, Megan Gushrowski, Emily Gushrowski, Nicholas Gushrowski; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mary Estelle Hausen

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mary had a way about her that could be very whimsical and magical. She had a sense of humor that could range from light and breezy where you just sat there amused to dry with a touch of macabre. One of her favorite pranks was to wait for you to leave the room and call you back. After you went back, she would simply ask how far you would have gotten if she hadn't called.  She would wake you up by singing, "Good morning to you, Good morning to you, We're all in our places with bright shiny faces".  Mary had a love for her family that couldn't be matched. She always worked hard at keeping in touch and letting you know she was thinking of you. She made time for her kids, her siblings, and her parents no matter what.

Mary was very creative and artistic. She would make fun things for people just to brighten their day. One year, she made everyone Christmas ornaments to celebrate her favorite holiday. The greatest gift Mary gave was the ability to create and the ability to see the world as it could be with hope. That gift has been passed down to her grandchildren. She made the world a better place leaving the best parts of her to live on in others.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte. A private family service will take place at a later date.

1438 Transportation Co., Elkhart, Indiana. Most who knew Dick would agree he was a ‘Priest without a collar’ - it was not I who served, but Christ, whose yoke I bore (Matthew 11:29). His kindness and willingness to selflessly serve his family, friends, and strangers alike was undeniable. From childhood until recently annual fishing trips and Dells excursions with his family in Wisconsin were dear to his heart (Psalms 37:3). Dick was a good steward of his beautiful wooded property in Trail Creek (Genesis 2:15), and over the years he generously adopted several dogs, fed raccoons, birds, and deer, exemplifying a fierce and faithful love for all God’s creatures (Proverbs 12:10).  Dick would often say, “Look to the heavens” (Isaiah
40:26), but this time look closely because you can see this merry soul driving a green and yellow John Deere tractor, pulling children over the lush, grassy hills of paradise (Luke 23:43).
