Born on June 14, 1954, in La Porte, Vickie was the beloved daughter of the late Allen M. Dickson and Marjorie A. (McMahon) Dickson. She graduated with pride as a member of the La Porte High School Class of 1972. During her formative years, she was deeply involved in 4-H, an experience that nurtured her lifelong passion for creativity, community, and service. While in high school, she was also an active member of Salem Chapel United Methodist Church, where she served as President of the United Methodist Youth Foundation, an early reflection of her natural leadership and the beginning of a legacy defined by dedication and compassion.

Following high school, Vickie worked as a secretary for Allis-Chalmers in La Porte, where her diligence and warm spirit were evident to all who knew her. On Valentine’s Day in 1976, she married the love of her life, Mark Daniel, beginning a beautiful journey that would span fifty devoted years of marriage.

Gene Gierke

Gene Gierke of La Porte, Indiana passed away this week.

“I loved teaching! Seeing the light of understanding and appreciation were very valuable reactions to reading and hearing the discussions and lessons of the day. Most students reacted in an appropriate way, with some guidance, which was my part in the process. To understand and appreciate the lesson was the objective. You can’t appreciate something you don’t understand. The understanding was my part to impart and appreciation would follow.”

Gene Gierke spent most of his life in education, partly as a student, but mostly as a teacher, as the previous paragraph indicates. Gene graduated from LaPorte High School and served briefly in the Army before working and saving for college. He graduated from Purdue University where he studied English and Speech, driven by his lifelong love of reading. After graduating, he taught at North Judson High School before joining LaPorte High School, where he was an English teacher and faculty sponsor of the school newspaper, The High Times. After 27 years in education, Gene began a new adventure with a second career until his retirement. In retirement, he returned to the classroom for eight years as a substitute teacher.

Gene was especially proud of his personal achievements, particularly his 35 years in the teaching profession. He also served as president of the LaPorte Area Juvenile Aid Association, helping establish the Boys Country Home for young men in crisis. He led the Godparent Program through St. Joseph’s Church, which provided scholarships for families in need to attend St. Joseph’s Catholic School. He further advocated for both students and teachers during his term on the school board.

Gene was also proud of his family: his wife of 59 years, his three beautiful daughters, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Gene was a devoted Boilermaker sports fan and rarely missed a chance to cheer on Purdue, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bears. He was also an avid bridge player and had a special place in his heart for his golden retriever, whose companionship brought him daily joy.

It should also be noted that Gene wrote this obituary himself as a final gift of his words to share with those he loved.

Gene requested that memorial donations be made to Dunebrook and to the Garces Foundation. Donations can be submitted online or mailed to the addresses below. Dunebrook 7451 West Johnson Road Michigan City, IN 46360 or Garces Foundation, 1901 S. 9th Street, Room 205, Philadelphia, PA 19148.

Private family services will be at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel in La Porte, Indiana.

Rae Ann Brown

Rae Ann Brown, a spirited soul who weaved passion and creativity into the tapestry of her life, has completed her earthly journey.

Born in November 1947, La Porte, Indiana, welcomed Rae Ann into its embrace. On February 6, 2026, in the warmth of The Center for Hospice Care (Raclin House) in Mishawaka, Indiana, Rae Ann passed peacefully after a brief battle with cancer.

Rae Ann's life was a vibrant quilt of experiences and accomplishments. A proud graduate of Saint Mary's School of Nursing in Milwaukee, she donned her nurse's cap and dedicated several years to nurturing patients back to health at La Porte Hospital on "E" Street. Later in life, she also became a Certified Master Gardener through Purdue University North Central.

After her stint in nursing, Rae Ann held several jobs within her community. To name a few, she was a familiar face at the Body Boutique on Lincoln Way and soon after in the same location at Merle Norman, she greeted customers at the reception desk. At La Porte's own Beauty School, she enjoyed assisting both staff and students.

Later in life, Rae Ann found inspiration on the shores of Lake Michigan. There, she collected driftwood, transforming it into art and sculpture. This art, recently sold and showcased at The Hidden Gem in New Buffalo, Michigan, proved that one person's beach debris could be another's mantelpiece-masterpiece.

Rae Ann's spirit was as untamed as her gardens, and her creativity boundless. She was a master at turning the mundane into the magnificent, whether it was through her driftwood art, her pride in her Italian heritage or her ability to make even the most stubborn of plants bloom and grow.

Though her passport was well-stamped, Rae Ann's greatest journey was through life itself. She traveled through it with much enthusiasm. Collecting memories with friends and family while leaving many smiles in her wake. Through the years her many beloved pets were fortunate to know her boundless love and affection.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter with her husband of 55 years Roger Brown, daughter Kelly Boston, son-in-law Jeremy Boston and her grandchildren, Campbell and Mase Boston; who each carry on her legacy of passion and artistry in their own unique way.

Rae Ann's light will continue to shine in the stories shared, the gardens blooming, and the art that adorns the walls of those who knew her. Her life was a masterclass in living fully, loudly, and loving deeply.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.

Nancy Lee (Renfro) Biller

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Nancy Lee (Renfro) Biller, who peacefully left this world on February 5, 2026.

Her laugh was loud and contagious; her dancing enthusiastic and joyful; and her presence lit up every room. She had a way of making people feel welcome, seen and loved, whether they were family, lifelong friends, or complete strangers.
Above all else, she was an amazing mother and a wonderful grandmother. Her love for her family was fierce and unconditional. Nancy found her greatest joy in time spent with those she loved most. She taught us how to laugh through hard times, how to show up for one another, and how to live with heart and humor.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories that will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, and all who were blessed to know her. Nancy will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Nancy was born on May 19, 1939, in La Porte, IN, to Hiram and Pansy (McDonald) Renfro.

Chares J. Keene

Charles J. Keene, September 1, 1945 - February 4, 2026.
Charles Joseph Keene’s final wish was to pass away at home, surrounded by love and family, not monitors and strangers. It was a promise that his wife, Connie, fulfilled in the early hours of February 4, 2026.
“Chuck,” as he was known to most people, was born September 1, 1945, in Michigan City, Indiana, where the couple met and fell in love. Their parents lived just a few blocks from each other. Chuck and Connie married on  February 13, 1965, raising one son, Joseph (Dawn) Keene, and enjoying a granddaughter, Jennelle Keene, and a great-granddaughter, Anneliese Keene, who called him “Papa.”
Chuck earned a living for decades as a central storekeeper at NIPSCO continuing his career at Material Sciences Corp. in East Chicago,  retiring in 2020, with a drive-by party outside his beloved home during the pandemic.
Chuck loved bowling, playing golf, and watching sports on TV, “anything with a ball bouncing around,” he once joked. He was a diehard fanatic for the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bears, proudly sporting their colors and emblems in public. So much so, that his final outfit after death was in his favorite Bears sweatshirt, sweatpants, and socks.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Clarence, and two
brothers, Raymond and John.

He is survived by two sisters, Karmen and Carol, his brother Jim, brothers- in-law Rick, Steve, Mark and Dean and sisters-in-law Helaine, Debra, Kim and Edith. His loved ones, including many nieces and nephews, were always there for him, just as he was for them during his life of 80 years.
Chuck never hesitated to help anyone in need, whether it was a neighbor or coworker or stranger. He was kind, funny, and lovingly ornery at times. He loved a tasty hamburger, a cold beer, and taking care of his lawn where leaves and high grass were always the enemy.
Chuck kept his word to others, just as Connie kept her word to him for his final wish - to be home. His other wish was to be cremated, with his ashes buried near his mother and brothers at Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City. He insisted on not having a funeral or memorial service, but a celebration of life will be held at a future date for family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, food, or other generous gifts to his wife, Connie, she asks that donations be made to Moose Family Center 980, 2107 Welnetz Rd., Michigan, IN 46360 or to VNA Hospice Association, 501 Marquette St., Valparaiso, IN 46383.

Marilyn J. (Krcilek) Levendoski

Marilyn J. (Krcilek) Levendoski - Born November 1, 1937 – Died February 4, 2026.

It is with deep love and heavy hearts we announce that Marilyn J. (Krcilek) Levendoski– fondly called “Auntie Mame” by all three generations of her nieces and nephews – departed this earthly realm on February 4, 2026, at the age of 88 in La Porte, IN.

Marilyn was a person that people remembered - and she herself was a “people person”! Her bright smile, encouraging words, optimism and intuition would always connect and go straight into your heart from hers and be EXACTLY what your soul needed at that time.

She was a LPHS graduate in 1956 (“Year of the fix”) and her years there nurtured and encouraged her innate abilities, as she excelled in the “lost art” of shorthand, typing and other secretarial and organizational skills. Those skills, along with her bubbly personality, work ethic and attention to detail, led into a career as an Executive Secretary for several local and out-of-state companies such as: Bastian-Morley, Allis-Chalmers, NY Blower, Whirlpool, La Porte Mayor Everett Koomler, Counts & Co. Investment and Securities (Atlanta), Hot Springs Village (Arkansas) and finally retiring from Beatty Memorial Hospital (Westville, IN) after 28 yrs. of service.

Marilyn’s love of nature and flowers (especially roses!) was evident in her personal gardens and her membership in the Michigan City Rose Society for many years. Playing the piano was a joy and gift, as Marilyn could “play by ear” even the most complex of melodies, as well as reading music. One of her favorites: “You are My Sunshine” continued to be played until very recently. Attending a 1954 Liberace piano concert in Chicago was a memorable highlight for a teenaged Marilyn!

Marilyn was the third child born to Gerald J. Krcilek and Jennie M. (Mannia) Krcilek on Nov. 1, 1937, in La Porte, IN.

Marilyn overcame a severe hip deformity in early childhood, and after many surgeries, went on to walk and live a healthy, normal life. Those hardships as a young child solidified her inner resolve of courage, gratitude, patience, optimism and a steadfast faith in God.

She married Joseph H. Levendoski on May 10, 1975 at St. Joseph Church in La Porte. Joseph passed away in 2013, after 38 years of marriage together.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joseph, her three brothers: Gerald N. (Marlene) Krcilek, Donald (Mary) Krcilek, Michael W. Krcilek and two nieces. She is survived by her sister Shirley (Richard) Pietraszewski and many nieces and nephews. Auntie Mame was always that “Special Aunt”!

Arrangements are being handled by the Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel in La Porte, IN.  Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at Holy Family Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 201 Bach Street, La Porte, Indiana.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the Church following the visitation.  Burial will take place at Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte, IN, with her husband.

No flowers or donations are requested. Instead, Marilyn would be so happy if everyone would slow down, be kind to one another and most importantly, take time to smell the roses! We Love you forever Auntie Mame!

A wonderful life was lived and lost when Mary Magdalene “Mimi” (Boardman) Toschi took her last breath on January 13, 2026. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her daughter and her cherished caregiver Janyl. Everyone who had the pleasure of meeting Mimi said she never spoke a harsh word and was the sweetest woman.

Mimi was born in La Porte and spent sixty-eight years teaching the joy of music to children. She began her career at Boston Middle School as a music teacher and continued to teach children in Hollywood, New York City, and Spain. She gave her last music lesson when she was 83.

Besides music, Mimi loved adventures. When women weren’t traveling alone seventy years ago, Mimi pioneered throughout Europe, Egypt, and even spent Christmas Eve in Bethlehem by herself in 1959.

While music and adventure were her passions, her greatest love was her family and God.

Mimi is preceded in death by her husband Alessandro Umberto Toschi, her parents, siblings, and nephews, Michael and Stephen Boardman.

She is survived by her children Alessandro (Debbie), daughter Mia and grandchildren Alexander (Melanie), Michael (Camille) and Gabriela and great-grandchildren Alexander, Mia and Ella. Mimi also had the joy of a large extended family in La Porte which included nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces and even numerous great-great nephews and nieces. She was graciously welcomed into many of their homes for Sunday family dinner which the family so appreciated.

Mimi and her husband Alessandro were married in St. Joseph Church in La Porte, Indiana, but raised their children in New York City and New Jersey. They also had a home in Arizona, where they enjoyed spending time with their son’s family.

After her husband’s death, Mimi moved back to La Porte. Her family owned a beloved cottage on Pine Lake and Mimi was remembered by many as a top water skier who even swam across Pine Lake in her earlier years.

One of her favorite songs was Frank Sinatra’s “I Did it My Way.” Mimi taught people to be kind and gracious and truly lived a selfless life.

There will be a celebration of life in the Spring with a Catholic Mass at St. Joseph Church and burial at Pine Lake Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel in La Porte.
