Judy K. Chronister

Judy K. Chronister, 73, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2020, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

 

Judy was born on June 27, 1946, in West Plains, MO, to Oscar and Emma (Ellison) Lovan.

 

On June 24, 1968, in Willow Springs, MO, she married Billy Dean who preceded her in death.  Surviving are her children Bruce (Lisa) Chronister of La Porte, Mikel (Gena) Chronister of Hammond, and Brian Chronister of Tampa, FL; 6 grandchildren, Ryan and Zac Chronister, Robert and Cody Chronister, and Danielle and Nikki Szymkowski; as well as close friends, Charles and Jennifer Martin.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

 

Judy was a homemaker.  She was a member of the Harvest Time Church of God.  Judy enjoyed traveling, music, cooking, and sports.  She was a supporter of Irving Little League Baseball and the Hammond Shamrocks.  Judy was very active in her church and enjoyed spending time with friends.  She rarely met a stranger.  Judy left precious memories for her family, who loved her dearly.  

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  A Celebration of Life Memorial Service at Harvest Time Church of God as well as a graveside service in Willow Springs, MO will take place at a later date.

Norman J. "Moe" Smith, 52, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2020, at 1:23 pm in Franciscan Health - Michigan City.

He was born February 25, 1968, in Michigan City, IN to the late James and Thelma (Davis) Smith.

Surviving are three daughters, Shaman Smith of Michigan City, IN, Abigail (Ian) Boltze of Cadiz, KY and Bailey Smith of Michigan City, IN; two sons, Warren Smith of Bradenton, FL, Robert Madaras of Michigan City, IN; twin sister, Norma (Brian) Kealey of Mason, MO; two brothers, Allan Smith of Bradenton, FL and James Smith of LaPorte, IN; three grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

He was also preceded in death by his son, Alexander Smith; sister, Tammy Sobieski; and brother, Karl Smith.

Moe was a self-employed contractor who enjoyed staying busy.

Michael S. Mikulski, 66, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Monday, April 27, 2020, at 3:59 pm in his home.

Clem Sobieski

Clem Sobieski, 89, Westville, Indiana, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2020, at 12:00 am in his home.

Private family services will be conducted. A public memorial mass will be announced at a later date. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Otis, IN. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

He was born April 30, 1930, in Otis, IN to the late Frank and Helen Sobieski. On September 22, 1956, in Otis, IN he married Mary Jo Humphrey who preceded him on January 4, 2020.

Surviving are daughter, Mary Kesling of LaPorte, IN; son, Michael Sobieski of Westville, IN; four grandchildren, Brittany (Greg) Wireman, Katlyn (Justin) Nettoruer, Kyle Sobieski and Colton Kesling; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, John Sobieski and Frank Sobieski, both of Otis, IN.

He was also preceded in death by his son, Robert Sobieski; three sisters, Irene, Evelyn and Jean; and five brothers, Raymond, Alex, Frank, Jake, and Eddie.

Clem retired after 40 years as an electrician at U.S. Steel and was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church/Otis and the I.B.E.W. Local 531. He enjoyed traveling and Christmas.

Stephen J. Gawronski

Stephen J. Gawronski, 51, Michiana Shores, Indiana, passed away Monday, April 27, 2020, at 8:41 pm in, Michiana Shores, Indiana.

Private family services will be conducted. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana is handling arrangements.

He was born June 26, 1968, in Michigan City, IN to Theodore and Barbara (Retseck) Gawronski. On October 26, 2019, in Three Oaks, Michigan he married Erin Leonard who survives.

Also surviving are step-son, Kenny Kirleis; step-daughter, Mary Kirleis; sister, Mary (Nathan) Iverson; brother, Bill (Eileen Steinhiser) Gawronski; 4 nephews and 2 nieces.

Stephen was a self-employed businessman earning degrees from Indiana University, DePaul University, and the University of Notre Dame. Stephen was a brilliant businessman with a wonderful heart. He was loved dearly by everyone who knew him. Stephen enjoyed being outdoors and participating in hobbies such as golfing, cycling, and hiking. He also enjoyed spending time with his two dogs, "Lucky" and "Andre".

Alice Louise Stoll

Alice Louise Stoll, 91, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 11:30 p.m., Monday, April 27, 2020, at Aperion Care The Arbors, Michigan City.

 

She was born on October 27, 1928, in Michigan City, Indiana, to Reinhart and Isabell (Maxwell) Eikelberg.

 

Alice was a loving homemaker to her husband and children. She was a past member of the First United Methodist Church, Michigan City, and La Porte Grange. Alice worked and organized the pancake breakfast for the La Porte Grange. Also, a past member of the Women of the Moose, where she also played the piano. She was a very talented pianist and organist, starting to play both from her childhood. Alice enjoyed playing cards, taking annual trips with the Moose Lodge to Las Vegas and regular cabin vacations, fishing in MI with her family.

 

On April 29, 1951, in Michigan City, Indiana, she married, Vernon B. Stoll, who preceded her in death May 20, 2007.

 

Also preceding in death were her parents, Reinhart Eikelberg and Isabell Eikelberg; three sisters, May Ames, Lucille Stoll, and Allene Gondek; and four brothers, Wayne, Ward, Robert and Everett Eikelberg.

 

Surviving are her two sons, Garry (Sue) Stoll and Greg Stoll both of La Porte; four grandchildren, Benjamin, Katherine, Erik, and Matthew Stoll; and one great-granddaughter, Maddison Stoll.

 

Cremation will take place. Alice will be laid to rest with her husband, Vernon, at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City. Lakeview Funeral Home & Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte, (219) 362-3100 is caring for the arrangements.

Larry L. Swiger

Larry L. Swiger, 77,  Trail Creek, Indiana, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2020, at 3:44 pm in Franciscan Health - Michigan City.

Private family services will be conducted. Burial will follow in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens. A public memorial service will be announced at a later date. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

He was born July 28, 1942, in Michigan City, IN to the late Lawrence and Gertrude (Peo) Swiger. On October 28, 1966, in Michigan City, IN he married Judith Ormsby who survives in Trail Creek, IN.

Also surviving are two daughters, Angela (Edward) Davis of Trail Creek, IN and Diana (Keith) Barkow of Middlebury, IN; son, James (Linette) Swiger of Benton Harbor, MI; seven grandchildren, Nicole Mitchell, Daniel Davis, Katherine Smith, Emily Barkow, Matthew Barkow, James P. Swiger, Jr., and Michael Swiger; and several great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in his grandson, Brian Swiger.

He had worked at Jim Vine Chevrolet and retired from Holt Equipment and also from Brandeis Inc. Larry was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge F&AM 83 and was a 33rd degree Mason with the Scottish Rite South Bend Valley. He volunteered at Franciscan Health-Michigan City and as a docent at the Old Lighthouse Museum. Larry enjoyed wood carving, stamp collecting, and making fishing flies.

Goldie Mae Decker

Goldie Mae Decker, 91, of Rolling Prairie, passed away peacefully at 11:06 a.m., Friday, April 24, 2020, at Community Hospital, Munster, IN.

 

She was born September 29, 1928, in Knott County, Kentucky, to Burn and Nancy (Brown) Combs.

 

Goldie was a member of Meer Road United Baptist Church, Michigan City. She was a nurse for 28 years, retiring from Mt. Sterling Clinic after 18 years of service. Previously she was employed, as well as her husband, William F. Hill, at Mary Chiles Hospital, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. She was the greatest baker there ever was and made delightful candies and fruit cakes. Goldie was also very talented at sewing, sewing like you could not believe. She was known to her family as always being right even when she was wrong. Goldie was a loving daughter, sister, and aunt that will be dearly missed.

 

On January 27, 1950, in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, she married, William F. Hill, who preceded her in death in 1984.

 

On September 5, 1992, in La Porte, Indiana, she married Arlo Gene Decker, who preceded her in death on January 15, 2002.

 

Also preceding in death were her parents, Burn Combs and Nancy Clemons; father, Milo Clemons; two brothers, Milo Clemons Jr. and Rev. Henry Clemons; and two sisters, Edna Louise Garrison and Lorene Childers.

 

Surviving are four sisters, Anna Ruth (Donald) Martin of Ocala, FL, Helen Fay (Lance) Whitefield of Eustis, FL, Bertha (Hershel) Patrick of Knox, IN and Juanita (Ray) Bellis of Rolling Prairie, IN; two brothers, Martin Clemons and A.D. (Agnes) Clemons both of Michigan City, IN; several nieces and nephews; adopted daughter, Jennifer Stacy; three grandchildren, Travis, Chantell, and Larry Spelts; and two great-grandchildren.

Brett Daniel Curry (Update)

Brett Daniel Curry, 26, of La Porte, passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2022.

  

Brett was born in La Porte, IN, on June 28, 1995 to Daniel and Marcy Kay (Makina) Curry. 

 

Surviving Brett are his parents; aunts, Lori (Gene) Guise of Mill Creek, Julie (Steve) Wisser Walkerton, and Debbie Wrobleski of La Porte; uncle, Dave (Priscilla) Curry of La Porte; as well as several cousins.

 

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Leo and Diana Makina; and paternal grandparents, Paul and Lucille Curry.

 

Brett was a caster at Howmet. He enjoyed sports, skateboarding and bowling. Brett also enjoyed music and playing guitar. He was a diehard Cowboys, Cubs and Irish fan.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2022,  at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Jason Burrick officiating.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.  Cremation will take place following the service.

Gerald "Jerry" W. Cramer

Gerald “Jerry” W. Cramer, 95, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Saturday, April 25, 2020.

Jerry was born January 4, 1925, in La Porte, Indiana to the late Peter and Marie (Essling) Cramer.

 

Jerry was a 1942 graduate of La Porte High School and the South Bend College of Commerce. He was a secretary/treasurer for 25 years at Voegler Distributing Company and previously worked at Reggie Pendleton Oldsmobile and Cadillac Dealership.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, La Porte American Legion Post #83, Knights of Columbus Post #1542, and a former member of Beechwood Men’s Golf Club.  He also was a United States Navy veteran of WWII.

 

On May 12, 1951, Jerry married Florence M. Bernacchi who survives along with their six children, Joseph Cramer (Mary) of Naples, Florida, James Cramer (Mary Jo) of Scottsdale, Arizona, Nancy Baugh (Michael) of Rancho Cucamonga, California, Barbara J. Miller of Denver, Colorado, Dr. John M. Cramer of Cedar Park, Texas, and Jane Cramer-Stevens (Brian) of La Porte, Indiana; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margaret Diffendorfer; and a brother, Norbert Cramer.

 

Cremation has taken place. Arrangements have been entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. Due to the Covid-19 virus, a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at a later date with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Nancy L. Huenecke

Nancy L. Huenecke, 87, of La Porte, Indiana passed away on Friday, April 24, 2020.  Nancy was born September 28, 1932, to the late Leo C. and Dorothy (Hoeppner) Schultz.

 

On February 12, 1952, Nancy married Gerhard Huenecke who preceded her in death on July 9, 2016.  Surviving are daughters, Linda (Andy) Coates of Louisville, Kentucky, Marsha (Michael) Tangen of Blue Grass, Iowa, Cynthia (David) Presley of Mattawan, Michigan; grandchildren, Robin (Jeremy) Haysley, Kevin Coates, Matthew( Katie) Tangen, Meredith (Casey) Schwartzlose, Mason (Paige) Tangen & Morgan Tangen, Nicholas (Miranda) & Brian (Debbie) Presley; great-grandchildren, Ashtyn & Madelyn Haysley, Harper & Hayden Presley, Jolee, Jordan & J.J. Tangen, and Emmitt Schwartzlose, ; and a cousin, Marian "Sis” Heath.   

 

Nancy worked at Low’s Clothing Store in the office for 25 years retiring in 1995.  She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in La Porte and enjoyed high school and college sporting events.

Jesse "Jay" Ramirez Sr.

Jesse "Jay" Ramirez Sr., 74, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2020, at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois.

He was born April 16, 1946, in Navasota, TX to the late Apolinar and Isidra (Pena) Ramirez. On February 14, 2020, in Michigan City, Indiana he married Maritza (Bee) Ramirez who survives in Michigan City, Indiana.

Also surviving are five sons, Apolinar Ramirez, Jay (Kim) Ramirez Jr., Jaime (Pamela) Ramirez, Joseph Ramirez, Agustin Ramirez; four daughters, Annette Ramirez, Anita Ramirez, Juanita Ramirez, Janette (Salvador) Chavez; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Beatrice Leal, Juanita Munoz, Margaret Feliciano, Josephine Montalvo.

Jesse was a member of Our Lady of Fatima in Chicago, IL. He enjoyed his job as a salesman and liked selling at flea markets. He also enjoyed playing pool and billiards.

Charles Augustus "Chuck" Sperry

Charles Augustus "Chuck" Sperry, 66, of La Porte, IN, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2020, at his home in La Porte.

 

He was born January 31, 1954 in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the son of Strephon Lloyd and Virginia (Brant) Sperry.

 

Charles, a retired Meat Cutter with Kroger, came to the La Porte area in 1996 from Sawyer, Michigan. He met Rebecca Barrett Kirk and they were married seven years ago.

Charles loved his work but found time to do all the landscaping at their home. He had a Bassett Hound, Molly, who loved her "dad" dearly.

 

Charles is survived by his wife, Rebecca Kirk-Sperry of La Porte; his son, Chad Sperry of New Troy, MI; and a grandson, Dalton Kirk. 

 

Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Stanley Sperry.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will have a private viewing before cremation.

Michael Steven Smith

Michael Steven Smith, 60, of La Porte, IN, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2020, at home surrounded by his family in La Porte.

 

He was born on February 4, 1960, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of George and Patricia (Baker) Smith.

On June 2, 1984, Michael married Rhonda Ehrick Smith, who survives. He is also survived by his two sons, Jeremiah (Brandy) Smith of Union Mills, IN and Zachary Smith of La Porte; three Grandchildren, Emma, Blake, and Natalie Smith; his father George (Beverly) Smith of South Bend; three sisters, Cindy Gastel, Jennifer Smith, Terri Baker; two brothers, Scott and Mark Mead. Michael was preceded in death by his grandparents and his mother Patricia Baker-Smith.

 

A member of the First Christian Church, La Porte, Mike honorably served in the US Army 11th A.C.R. in Germany. He was a member of the Michigan City Rifle Club and of the Kankakee Valley Bass Angler's Club, among many others. Mike coached La Porte Pop Warner football for 22 years.  He worked at the Smith Shell Service station, All Star Autos, Keller Limestone, and D&M Excavating as a mechanic and truck operator. Mike especially loved spending time with his family and friends camping, fishing, hunting, shooting, coaching, and woodworking. 

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Michael's Life will be announced at a later date.

Charles Eugene Smith

Charles Eugene Smith went to be with his creator on April 6, 2020 at the age of 87.  

He was born September 6, 1932, in Independence, Missouri, to Theodore Franklin Smith and Coila Alva (Tienken) Smith.

Charles was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and later ran for County Assessor for Buchanan County, Mo.  He moved to the Phoenix Metropolitan area in the 1970’s.  Charles joined the Camelback Mountain Lions club where Barry Goldwater was a member and became their President.  Through the Lions Club, Charles hosted a Foreign Exchange Student, Yasuko Matsumoto, who became a lifelong friend and part of the family.

He spent the rest of his career working in the financial services industry. He received many awards during his working career. Charles never met a stranger and always knew everyone in his neighborhood.  He loved having family and friends come to visit and he always had room for them to stay.  Charles loved to travel as well as just find a back road and spend time sightseeing.   One of his favorite places was Las Vegas for their shows and to show off his BlackJack skills.  Of course, he was always a WINNER!  He was an avid soccer fan. Charles played soccer until he was 65 years old.  He loved going and watching the kids and grandkids play. Charles also had a deep love for animals. He loved the routine visits from the local wildlife.

Charles is survived by his eight children, Patricia (Jim) Phillippe, Marcia Velazquez, Marc (Mary) Smith, Susan (Rick) Cary, Heather (Dave) Hacker, Matthew (April) Smith, Abby Smith, Sara Leathers; sixteen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Preceding in death were his parents, Theodore Smith and Coila Jones; sister, Billie Smith King, brother, Gerald “Chris” Smith; and grandson, Ben Velazquez.

Lauretta Ann Hanson

Lauretta Ann Hanson, 86, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Saturday, April 18, 2020.

Lauretta was born March 29, 1934 in La Porte, Indiana to the late Aloysius and Augusta (Daniel) Breitenbach.

 

Lauretta was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where she was on the Altar Rosary Society, St. Margaret Circle, and St. Joseph-St. Vincent DePaul Society.

On May 15, 1965, in La Porte Lauretta married Kenneth D. Hanson who passed away March 13, 2013.

 

Lauretta is survived by several nieces and nephews, among them Joan, Rick and Jeff; and two sisters-in-law, Pauline Breitenbach and Jackie Breitenbach.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; two sisters, Sister M. Judian Breitenbach and Margaret Majewski; three brothers, Sylvester Breitenbach, Brother Clarence Breitenbach, and Leo Breitenbach.

 

Due to the COVID-19 virus a private Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial took place at Patton Cemetery.

John Conners, Jr.

John Conners, Jr, 87 of Fish Lake, Walkerton, Indiana passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2020. He was born on June 22, 1932, in Chicago to the late John Sr. and Alice (Turner) Conners. 

John was a member of the Teamsters Union and was dedicated to his career as a truck driver for over 50 years.  Before that, he served in the United States Air-force and is a veteran of the Korean war.  He was a national life member and past commander of the VFW in Chicago, a member of the American Legion Post #400 at Fish Lake, past president and member of the Fish Lake Home Owners Association, the Fish Lake Conservation Club and the Canaryville Veterans Association in Chicago.

Wagner.  The couple has celebrated 67 anniversaries being as in love with each other as the day they married.   Ida survives to cherish his memory along with their eight children, John Conners III (Margie) of Chicago, Mary Wyatt (Doug) of Henderson, Tennessee, Cathy Dickman (Wally) of Fish Lake, Margaret Gach of Chicago, Pam Florence of Fish Lake, Bernie Conners (Jay) of La Porte, Ida Ludwig of La Porte, Fred Conners of Fish Lake; 17 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Judy Leonard of Alabama; and a brother, George Conners (Kathy) of Henderson, Tennessee.  John was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Rose Rice and Lorraine Stiller; and Sons-in-law, Chuck Gach, Glenn Florence, Jim Nelson, and Dan Hughes. 

 

John devoted his life to his family and lived every day with integrity.  He enjoyed playing pinnacle, working in his yard, watching a western, or was just happy to be with his family. John was also an avid Chicago sports fan who never missed a Sox or Cubs game and loved cheering on DA Bears!! He was known for his easy-going mannerism and was considered (dad) to many more than his own 8 children.  A truly giving heart.  His unconditional love, care, and encouragement will remain in the hearts of his family always.

Michael J. Miller

Michael J. Miller, 66 of La Porte, Indiana passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2020. He was born on October 13, 1953, in La Porte to the late Joseph T. and Ceycelia M. (Ellenwine) Miller. He was employed with New York Blower for 35 years. 

 

Mike is survived by sisters, Jo Herbst (Don) of Lisbon, North Dakota, Jane Slater (John) of La Porte; a brother, Dave Miller (Sherri) of Valparaiso, Indiana; nine nieces and nephews; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

 

Mike was a 1972 graduate of New Prairie High School where he lettered in baseball. He was a volunteer with the Kankakee Township Fire Department, and a supporter of his nephew and nieces sporting events. He enjoyed going to the casino with his cousins Alvie and Kristin. He also enjoyed softball and bowling and was an avid Cubs fan.

Dorothy Fackelman

Dorothy Fackelman passed from this life into the next on Monday, April 20, 2020.    

 

She was born May 16, 1923 in St. Paul, Minnesota and later married the love of her life,

Harold Fackelman, in 1950. Harold passed away in May 2019. They were blessed with eight children:  Margaret (Daniel) Lafree of Mishawaka, Indiana; Kathy (Jerry) Leek of Wanatah, Indiana; John (Maureen) Fackelman of Altamonte Springs, Florida; Lisa Fackelman of Fort Wayne, Indiana; David (Barbara) Fackelman of Mount Dora, Florida; Mary Fackelman of Wanatah, Indiana; Laura Fackelman of Valparaiso, Indiana; and Peter (Elizabeth) Fackelman of Davidson, North Carolina. Grandchildren surviving are three children of Margaret (Daniel) including Jacob (Lyssa) of Elkhart, Indiana; Kristina of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Jessica of Indianapolis, Indiana; and five children of Peter (Elizabeth) including Mallory (Zachary) of Burlington, Vermont; Heyden (Annie) of Charlotte, North Carolina; Adam of Atlanta, Georgia; Jay of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Eric of Davidson, North Carolina.  Great-grandchildren include Violet Marie of Jacob (Lyssa) of Elkhart, Indiana. Dorothy was preceded in death by parents Flora and Victor Ellacott and her one sibling, Catherine Stocksdale.       

 

Dorothy’s early years were spent in Minnesota and later in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. As a child, she

regaled in stories about Scotland from her mother. Dorothy took flying lessons, rode horses, enjoyed swimming and bicycling, and loved maps and geography. She was known to have her World Atlas right next to her each night. She adored Scottish poet Robert Burns and listening to her mother play piano. Dorothy attended business school and worked at Ball Band in Mishawaka, Indiana.

 

While later attending Indiana University in Bloomington, Dorothy met her future husband, Harold. These two were a match made in heaven and were married for 69 years. First and foremost, Dorothy was the epitome of what a wife and mother should be. Most important in her life were her eight children and wonderful husband. When people met with Dorothy, she always gave them her undivided attention—an impressive skill with so many children running around. 

 

The family would like to acknowledge the Seniors Helping Seniors caregivers who took wonderful

care of their mother. The family would also like to extend a heartful appreciation to daughters Laura Fackelman and Kathy Leek for their tireless, unfailing devotion to their mom. It’s really impossible to acknowledge all they did for her. They are deeply, deeply appreciated.

 

Due to the Covid-19 virus a private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial at Pine Lake Cemetery.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel in La Porte.

Rose M. Mackie

Rose M. Mackie, 91, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 7:20 p.m., Friday, April 17, 2020, at Hamilton Grove, New Carlisle, IN.

She was born August 18, 1928, in Baltic, MI, to Joseph and Theresa (Fabac) Mukavetz.

Rose met her future husband, William Mackie, while attending Suomi College, Hancock, MI. They married in 1949 and lived in Michigan until they retired to Florida in 1984. She was a homemaker who dearly loved caring for her family. Rose loved the companionship with her Shetland Sheepdogs. She also loved to crochet, making afghan treasured memories for her children and grandchildren. Rose was a devoted catholic and was a member of the Red Hat Society.

Surviving are two children, Mary (Dave) Bristow of Bentonville, Arkansas and Diane (David) Stamp of La Porte; two grandchildren, Will (Sirajah Raheem) Stamp and Ted Stamp; and one great-granddaughter, Merula Stamp Raheem.

Preceding in death were her husband in 1995; and three brothers, John, Rudy and Carl Mukavetz.

Barry Wayne Bush

Barry Wayne Bush, 81, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2020.

 

Barry was born on December 12, 1938, in Rolling Prairie, IN, to Frank and Eva (Collyer) Bush.

 

On July 16, 1988, in New Buffalo, MI, he married Glenda Dew who preceded him in death on September 3, 2000.  Surviving are his son, Jason Bush of Alpine, CA; daughter Beth Ann Smeaton of Taylorville, KY; son-in-law, Dennis Smeaton of Taylorville, KY; grandchildren, Seraphina Bush, and Jordan, Savannah, and Jarrett Smeaton; sisters, Barbara Hall and Bonnie Brainerd; as well as many nieces and nephews.  His closest nephews were like his own sons, Kenny Mossman and the Newland Boys--Donnie, Doug, and Dean.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and siblings, Lester, Meredith, Cyril, Frank, Sam, Lou Ann, Eva, Jeannie, and Betty.

 

Barry was a skilled carpenter and nurseryman for many years, owning different businesses.  Shortly after high school, Barry enlisted for a short stint in the United States Army Reserves.  He was a member of the American Legion, Post #83.  Barry was a master fisherman, history buff, avid reader, crossword puzzle extraordinaire, and had an uncanny knack for picking a good horse to win all the major races.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Margaret Lewis

Margaret Lewis, 81, of Michigan City, passed away peacefully at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, April 19, 2020, in her home.

 

She was born November 14, 1938, in Michigan City, to Walter and Grace (Butler) Coursel.

Margaret was a great cook and had many wonderful recipes.  It was a great joy for her to feed family and friends, especially during the holidays.  Margaret was an avid fan of Larry Bird, Notre Dame Fighting Irish women’s basketball and watching Jeopardy.  She will be remembered as a very warm and welcoming mom.

 

She married Donald Lewis, who preceded her in death in April 1986.

Also preceding in death were three brothers; two sisters; and one grandson.

Surviving are four children, Donna (Jeff) Pangborn, Wayne Lewis, and Cynthia “Cindy” Moisan all of Michigan City and Carla (Guy) Selman of Kouts, IN; two sisters, Helen Berndt of Valparaiso, IN, Marjorie Wood of North Liberty, IN; two brothers, Wallace (Pat) Coursel of Westville and Alfred (Cookie) Jumche of La Porte; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Kathleen Stafford.

Joan H. Borg .91, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Friday, April 17, 2020.

 

She was born on January 22, 1929, in La Porte to Hubert V. and Dorothy (Blakeman) Borg.  Joan was employed with NIPSCO for many years as a bookkeeper and later with Berkel, (formerly The US Slicing Machine Company).  She was an avid bowler on the senior and ladies’ leagues in La Porte and also enjoyed golfing. 

 

Joan is survived by her sister, Barbara D. Borg, and sister-in-law, Rose M. Peer both of Sarasota, Florida and a sister-in-law, JoAnn Borg of La Porte. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marilouise Arndt; and a brother, Hubert J. Borg all of La Porte.

Eleanor V. (Jones) DeMarco

Eleanor V. (Jones) DeMarco, 91, of La Porte, IN, passed away on Wednesday, April 15th, 2020 in Indianapolis, IN.

   

Eleanor was born in New Carlisle, IN, St. Joseph County, on July 3, 1928, to the late Ellis and Neva M. (Rodgers) Jones.

 

Surviving are her beloved children, Davelle E. DeMarco of Indianapolis, IN and Dawn E. DeMarco of Mechanicsville, VA; precious granddaughters, Kristin (Stu) DeMarco, Mikhala Sheets, Karlee DeMarco, Madeline Potter, India Potter, and Zoë Potter; great-granddaughter, Townes Brown; as well as numerous loved nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, David E. DeMarco; brothers, Kenneth, George and Keith; sisters, Marvel, Virginia, and Eloise; and nieces, Marilyn and Neva Kay.

 

Eleanor graduated from New Carlisle High School as Salutatorian and continued her education at Indiana University where she received a B.S. and M.S. in Elementary Education focusing in music.  She was an avid Indiana University basketball fan and rarely missed a game.

 

Her teaching career began in New Carlisle where she taught elementary education for 18 years.  After moving to La Porte, she taught elementary music and served as department head for 22 years.  She loved her students at school as well as at home where she taught private piano lessons.

 

Eleanor was an active member in the La Porte community, including La Porte First United Methodist Church where she filled in as organist/pianist, sang in the choir, served on the Board of Trustees, and belonged to Wesley Ann Circle.  She filled in as organist/pianist at several churches in the area.

 

Eleanor served as the Grand Mother advisor of Rainbow Girls Order of Easter Star, was a member of the IN Retired Teachers Association, and received the Gleaners award for community service in 2002.  She and her great-nephew, Andrew Jones, were recognized for performing numerous benefit concerts for Friends of the Handicapped in Aruba, an organization founded by her brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Wilma Jones.

 

She was co-president of AAUW La Porte, member of Women’s Literacy Association, served on the LP Co. Symphony Orchestra board as chairperson of the Young Artists Competition, past-president of LP Service League where she played music and acted in several plays, belonged to Elizabeth Miriam Clyburn Chapter of Questers, performed with the “Ragtag” group once a month at nursing homes, and belonged and served in countless other groups and organizations.

 

Eleanor was so appreciative of her friends and volunteers, especially Debbie Bremer, Tina Geyer, Bonnie Quigley, Lucy Vergo, Sandy and Terry Burkhart, Lois Eversman, and her devoted friend and neighbor, Nancy Adkins.

 

Cremation has taken place with Keller Mortuary in Indianapolis, IN.

  

A Celebration of Life Memorial Reception will be held at a later date, to be announced.

Courtney Lynn Deming, 25, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.

Courtney was born on March 24, 1995, in Michigan City, IN, to David and Cheryl (Metheny) Deming.

 

Surviving are her sons, Jordan and Josiah; nephew, Isiah; parents; siblings, Cydney and Derrian Deming; grandparents, David N. Deming, Bud (Patty) Metheny, and Jim (Linda) Vance; great-grandmothers, Mary B. Hamilton, and Ruth Rudd; aunts, Morgan Vance and Vicki Pasaye; and uncles, Robert, James and Gregory Metheny, James Vance, and Daniel Deming.

 

She was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, Richard Hamilton and great-grandparents, Joan "great-grandma Kota" Horine, Carter Metheny, Glen (Gearldine) Miller, and Nelson (Dorothy) Deming.

 

Courtney had a passion for music of all varieties, but she especially loved to play the piano and sing.  She enjoyed cutting and styling hair and worked as a hairstylist at the Hair Cuttery in La Porte.  She was extremely artistic and always thought "outside the box".  Courtney had a contagious smile and a personality that drew everyone to her.  She had a heart of gold and enjoyed helping others.  She had tons of friends and family that truly love and adore her.

 

Due to guidelines established by the State of Indiana in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private viewing will be held with immediate family members only and a Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Pastor James Bouslog

Pastor James Bouslog, 66, of New Buffalo, MI, went to be with his glorious Lord and Savior Thursday, April 16, 2020. A wonderful husband, loving father and proud grandfather that will be greatly missed.

 

He was born December 30, 1953, in Elwood, IN, to Jack Richard and Rosa Marie (Bryant) Bouslog.

 

Jim attended Madison Heights High School with many of his friends and graduated in 1972. He met his wife Louann in 1969, his freshman year of high school. Jim graduated from Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Watertown, WI, in 1980 and attended two years of Seminary School. The Lord blessed Jim and Louann with five wonderful children and twelve precious grandchildren.

 

Jim was fortunate enough to travel to several countries for mission work. Telling others about Jesus Christ was very near and dear to his heart. He exemplified the love of Christ to others everywhere he went.

 

Jim served as Associate Pastor in Watertown, WI as well as West Hartford, CT. He served as Senior Pastor in Watseka, IL and was currently serving at Bible Baptist Church in New Buffalo, MI for the last 23 years.

 

Jim enjoyed serving on the staff at Lakeview Funeral Home for the last ten years.

 

He enjoyed spending time with his family, but especially his grandchildren. They spent many hours fishing, boating, hiking, and riding scooters. Jim was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and was able to recently attend the season opener for the 100th season. Jim and Louann shared almost 49 years of marriage and were blessed to live life and serve Christ together side by side.

 

Jim loved life and was a shining light to all that were blessed to know him. He was loved by all who met him and he genuinely cared about people. Jim’s goal in life was to share Christ to others, so they could be assured of a home in Heaven.

 

On August 28, 1971, at Eastland Christian Church, in Anderson, Indiana, he married his sweetheart and love of his life, Louann (Bassemer) Bouslog, who survives.

 

Also surviving are his greatly loved children, Pastor Mark (Lori) Bouslog of Wyoming, MI, Michelle (Ryan) Hobart and Marsha (Barry) Hooker both of Bloomington, IL, Melissa Bouslog of La Porte, IN and Melanie Bouslog of Bloomington, IL; beloved brother, Randy (Tracy) Bouslog of Anderson, IN; his treasured grandchildren, Ashtyn Bouslog, Garrett Hooker, Stephen Bouslog, Landyn Baker, Cole Hobart, Jaiden Baker, Hoyt Hobart, Lily Tevoert and Baby Lake Hobart; and his extended treasured grandchildren, Alaysha Smith, Elijah and Adam Ferrell.

 

Preceding in death were his parents, Jack Bouslog and Rosa Bouslog Bruce; paternal grandparents, Earl and Mary Bouslog; maternal grandparents, Cecil and Dora Bryant; beloved brother, Fred Bouslog; precious infant nephew, Joshua Bouslog; and in-laws, Jack and Beverly Bassemer.

Rodney Dale Williams, 65, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2020, at La Porte Hospital and Health Services.

 

Rodney was born on June 27, 1954, in Chicago, IL, to Wilbur and Jennie (Simpson) Williams.

 

On March 29, 1982, in Union City, TN, he married Maureen Bell who preceded him in death.  Surviving Rodney are his children, Teresa (Travis) Vinson of La Porte, Kevin Williams of New Carlisle, and Cynthia (Zeth) Wolfenbarger of La Porte; 5 grandchildren,  Kevin, Xavier, Ayrianna and Jayden Vinson all of La Porte and Alexis Williams of New Carlisle; siblings, Shirley Coots and Debbie Garcia both of Channahon, IL and Russ Williams of Sardis, TN; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and brother, Mike McCall. 

 

Rodney was a laborer for many years at Alpha Bakery.  He enjoyed playing pool, listening to music, relaxing in front of the tv, tinkering with his car, and taking long drives.  Most importantly, Rodney enjoyed spending time with grandchildren.

Lewis had worked at Joy Mfg. and retired as a correctional officer at Westville Correctional Facility. He also retired from Blue Chip Casino and was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Lewis was a member of the John Franklin Miller American Legion Post 37 and he enjoyed golfing.

Beverly June Bergeron

Beverly June Bergeron, 86, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2020.

Beverly was born February 15, 1934, to George and Mary (Theurer) Varsanik of Seymour, Connecticut.

 

Beverly graduated from Seymour High School in 1952. On July 25, 1953, she married Philip Hyde Jr. who preceded her in death on May 23, 1980. They moved to Florida in 1979. On April 24, 2004, she married Armand Bergeron in Florida who preceded her in death on February 2, 2012.  After his passing, Beverly moved to Hamilton Grove Assisted Living in New Carlisle, Indiana.  She held several secretarial positions, and was a fun-loving person who enjoyed traveling, entertaining and cooking.

 

Beverly is survived by two sisters, Laura (Richard) Murphy of Cataumet, MA and Joyce Grohs of Phoenix, AZ; two brothers, Paul (Joann) Varsanik of Derby, CT and Fred (Carol) Varsanik of La Porte, IN and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lois M. Govert

Lois M. Govert, 77, of Schererville, Indiana passed away Thursday, April 16, 2020, at the Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana.  She was born on October 5, 1942, in La Porte, Indiana to Delmer F. and Nona Lea (Flynn) Oestreich.

 

Lois retired from the Westville Correctional Facility as a secretary and previously held positions in the school and as a guard.  She was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church in Merrillville, Indiana. 

 

On November 13, 1999, Lois married Joseph Govert who survives.  She was married to her first husband, Alfred Govert who preceded her in death on December 31, 1987. Surviving are her children, Michele (Wayne) Peeples of La Porte, William Govert of Michigan City; stepchildren, Joseph (Donna) Govert of St. John, Indiana, Valerie (Thomas) Laskey of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Paula (Rick) Gard of Schererville, Indiana; grandchildren, Anthony Peeples, Brandon Peeples, Alyssa Govert, Benjamin Govert, Joseph (Courtney) Govert, Jessica (Kyle DeHaven) Govert, Thomas (Jen) Laskey, Ricky Gard, Rory Gard, Victoria Gard; great-grandchildren, Liam and Rilynn Govert; and brothers, Karl (Sue) Oesteich of La Porte and Bill (Dyana) Oestreich of Crystal River, Florida.

Stephen Neal Arnett

Stephen Neal Arnett, 54, of Kingsford Heights, passed away unexpectedly at 5:45 p.m., Tuesday, March 31, 2020, at La Porte Hospital.

 

He was born February 7, 1966, in Winamac, Indiana, to Dennis and Dorothy (Prater) Arnett Jr.

 

Stephen honorably served his country in the United States Army Reserves. He was a pyrotechnician for Melrose Pyrotechnics. Stephen enjoyed having a good time and riding motorcycles. He loved his family and his dogs deeply. Stephen also loved animals and nature. Stephen will be forever missed.

 

Surviving are one daughter, Stephenni Endsley of Mishawaka; one brother, Robert Arnett of Kingsford Heights; and fiancé, Rhonda (Witt) Post.

 

Preceding in death were his father, Dennis Arnett Jr.; and mother, Dorothy Hill.

Phyllis Ann McVicker, 78, passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, at Porter Regional Hospital.

 

Phyllis was born on April 7, 1941, in Muncie, IN, to C. Harold and Ester (Cardif) McVicker.

 

Phyllis is survived by her brother, Howard (Erma Gene) McVicker; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews; as well as many friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James and Lowell McVicker; and sister, Mildred (Bill) Mellott.

 

Phyllis was a 1959 graduate of Yorktown High School.   She received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Ball State University in 1963 and her Masters from Indiana University in 1965.  Phyllis taught for 2 years at Yorktown High School from 1963-65.  She then taught Physical Education for 31 years in the Portage Township School Corporation, from 1965-1996.

 

Phyllis was known for her smile, bear hugs, kindness to all, and her special love for her dogs.  She loved to fish with family and friends, especially in her retirement.

 

A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to La Porte County Small Animal Shelter, Hanna Food Pantry, Hanna Fire Dept., or the La Porte County K-9 Unit.

Raymond “Red Rider” Eugene Miller, 70, of Michigan City, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13, 2020, at Franciscan Health Hospital, Michigan City.

 

He was born August 3, 1949, in Tiptonville, Tennessee, to Richard and Elsie (Martin) Miller. Ray was raised by his uncle, Charles Miller, after his parents’ passing.

 

On June 19, 1987, in Michigan City, Indiana, he married, Anna Marie (Childers) Miller, who survives.

 

Also surviving are two children, Richard D. Miller of Galien, MI and Kathleen (Anthony) Gragido of La Porte, IN; three siblings, Richard (Cynthia) Miller of Portage, MI, Claude Miller of Michigan City, IN and Viola (Robert) Ithal of New Ulm, MN; and two grandchildren, Nathan Gragido and Nicholas Gragido.

 

Preceding in death were his parents; and his uncle, Charles Miller.

 

Ray honorably served his country in the United States Navy. He was a lifetime member and past Commander of D.A.V. Chapter #23. Ray was a proud and dedicated member of D.A.V. for over 25 years, serving in many different offices. He was also a member of American Legion Post 37 and 40 & 8. Ray retired from ArcelorMittal after 40 years of employment in the steel mill. He was happiest when on a motorcycle with his “knees in the breeze” or spending time with family in Tennessee. Ray loved his family and friends deeply. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving are three daughters, Nancy (Ron) Blue of Danville, IL, Patricia Lamb of Florence, AZ and, Deborah Bootcheck of Chicago, IL; son, James (Debra) Bootcheck of Michigan City, IN; eight grandchildren, Ashlyn Blue, Tyler (Vicky) Blue, Brittany (Matt) Gandolfo, Madeline (Ricky) Pollock, Jilliene (Eric) Hekter, Justin Bootcheck, Julie (Joe) Warning and Kristen Karkiewicz; eight great-grandchildren, Kaylie, Madison, Adeline, Josephine, Gwendoline, Mila, Adelyn and Sawyer.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Jane Gobrewski and Judith Ann Plant; brother, Eugene Gobrewski; and her niece Sue Karkiewicz.

Arletta retired after 34 years as an assistant to the credit manager at Weil McLain. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and a former member of Women of the Moose 935, Young at Heart Club, Michigan City Senior Center, United Polka Association, St. Stanislaus Rosary Society and the Weil McLain Salaried Employees Club.

Evelyn  S. Leffew, 90, of La Porte, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2020, at Fountainview Terrace, La Porte.

 

Evelyn was born on September 21, 1929, in Harriman, TN, to William Floyd and Tennie Belle (McGaha) Stegall.

 

On July 15, 1949, in Harriman, TN, she married Lawrence Leffew who preceded her in death.  Surviving are her children, Jacqueline (Bob)  Murnane of La Porte, Rhonda (Jeff Ash) Leffew of La Porte, Patricia (Jim Toth) Leffew of Michigan City, Karen (Don) Wood of Albuquerque, NM, and Joy (Wayne) Whitney of Port St. Lucie, FL;  12 grandchildren, Adam (Kara) Murnane, Jennifer (Jim) Wright, Lisa Roberts, Tracy Renae', Jason Murnane, Joanna (Eddy) Krown, Rodney Leffew, Amy (Dan Harrah) Young, Jeremy Wood, Christina Wood, Taylor Whitney, and Scott Whitney; 17 great-grandchildren, Justice, Jules, Jurzie, and Jude Krown, Ashley, Austin, and Autumn Roberts, Alexis, MaKayla, Melody, and Layla Murnane, Colin, Kyle and Han Wright, Megan (Matt) Nussbaum, and Laney and Ben King; sister, Pauline Stegall Clowers; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded by her parents and siblings, Garret "Pappy" Stegall, George Stegall, Clarence Stegall, John "Red" Stegall, Millard "Bug" Stegall, Betty Stegall, and Ruby Stegall Nelson.

 

Evelyn was a laborer for 32 years at Jefferson Smurfit and Boise Cascade.  She retired in 1995.  Evelyn enjoyed teaching Sunday School, gardening, and watching sports.  She enjoyed watching Slicer High School baseball at Schreiber Field.  Evelyn loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She also enjoyed all family gatherings.  Evelyn was a member of the La Porte Assembly of God.

 

Due to guidelines established by the State of Indiana in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, private family visitation will be held.  Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.  A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Jean Marie Zurcher, 79, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 10, 2020.

 

Jean was born on September 19, 1940, in Fort Wayne, IN, to Mark and Marguerete Vosmeier.

 

On June 6, 1964, in Ft. Wayne, IN, she married Carl Joseph Zurcher who preceded her in death on December 16, 2019.  Surviving are her sons, Mark Zurcher of Minneapolis, MN and Michael Zurcher of La Porte.  Jean is also survived by her brother, Louis Vosmeier of Fort Wayne and sisters, Mary Albers of Fort Wayne and Carol Thurston of Fort Worth, TX.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Carl.

 

Jean attended college at St. Francis of Assisi in Fort Wayne.  She was a retired school teacher and stay at home mom.  Jean enjoyed art, crafting, and painting.  Most importantly, Jean loved her family, especially her grandchildren.

Donald Eugene Lovvorn, 62, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 4:10 p.m., Sunday, April 12, 2020, in his home.

 

He was born September 15, 1957, in Lafayette, Indiana, to Aaron and Berdina (Venters) Lovvorn.

 

While growing up, Donald created many memories of coon hunting and fishing with family and friends. He honorably served his country in the United States Army. Donald was a truck driver for several years. He was an avid player of the app game, Farm Ville. Donald knew everybody and everybody knew him. He will be dearly missed.

 

Surviving are his father, Aaron Lovvorn of New Carlisle; three children, Marianne Rush of Mishawaka, Josh Barger and Caitlin (Kelson) Stone both of La Porte; service dog, Molly; four sisters, Delores (Gary) Adams of La Porte, Marie Gainer of Plymouth, Jackie (Thomas) Smith of La Porte and Vicky Lovvorn of New Carlisle; five grandchildren, Abbigail Rush, Ty Rush, Aaron Rush, Peyton Stone, and Brayden Stone; and soulmate and caregiver, Barb Scofield of La Porte.

Rose enjoyed quilting, gardening, bird watching, using her computer tablet and especially spending time with her family. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Lady Auxiliary VFW Post #9423 Rolling Prairie.

Donald "Donnie" "Dog" Edward Olson

Donald “Donnie” “Dog” Edward Olson, 61, of La Porte, passed away unexpectedly at 10:30 p.m., Monday, April 6, 2020 at La Porte Hospital.

 

He was born December 23, 1958, in Oak Park, Illinois. Donald was raised by his beloved uncle and aunt, Sears and Dorothy Wait.

 

Donald attended Chesterton High School. He honorably served his country as a combat engineer and paratrooper in 82nd Airborne Division in the United States Army. He was Union President for Smurfit Stone. Donald was a member of Yana Service Club, La Porte and of the Porter County Drill Team for 4-H. He also was part of the grandpa club, having many grandchildren of his own, who he adored them all. Donald formerly played co-ed softball and coached girls’ softball in La Porte county. He formerly worked for Field Container, Viking Paper, and Quality Packaging. Donald was an avid Bears Fan. Donnie was always full of humor and loved laughing at goofy topics.

 

On December 16, 2002, in Las Vegas, Nevada, he married, Melissa (Miller) Olson, who survives.

Also surviving are his five children, Kacey (James) Sullivan of La Porte, Nate (Kelsie) Olson of Savanna, Georgia and Raymond Miller, Tiffany Stoll and Christina Stoll all of La Porte; six sisters, Cheri (Todd) Hobson of Rensselaer, IN, Ryann (Kurt) Ramer of Westville, Gayle (Eric) Adams of Westville, Amanda (Steve) Hall of FL, Tonya (Patrick) Fitzwater of Indianapolis and Tara (Bill) Felske of La Porte; three brothers, Bill (Lisa) Olson of IL, Greg Olson of Westville and Jeff Olson of Westville; nine grandchildren, Keaton, Kohler, Tyler, Trevor, Trinity, Tanner, Justus, Dominic and Carsyn; one uncle, Jim (Derlene) Olson of Chesterton; father-in-law, Ray (Charlene) Miller Jr. of Knox; mother-in-law, Rose Krueger of Medaryville; extended family member, Brenda Olson of Westville; and several sisters, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many cousins.

Michele Kay Williams, 54, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020, at La Porte Hospital and Health Services.

 

Michele was born on November 22, 1965, in Kouts, IN, to David and Karen (Stoddard) Anderson.

 

Surviving Michele are her daughter, Madison Draves of La Porte; brother, Craig (Donna) Anderson of Virginia Beach, VA; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Michele was self-employed.  She enjoyed walking her dog, Ripley.

Also surviving are two sons, Rondell (Kathy) Scott of Michigan City, IN and David (Connie) Scott of Winamac, IN; daughter, Darla (Scott) Raye of Valparaiso, IN; step-son, Michael Neville of Michigan City, IN; step-daughter, Lisa (Robert) Koumal of Vail, AZ; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her brother, Clinton (Cecilia) Wolfe of IN.

Phyllis had worked at Al's Supermarkets and was a member of the Delta Wives, Women of the Moose 935, Service League of Michigan City and the Michigan City Senior Center. She enjoyed cooking and shopping.

She was born March 16, 1928, in Oklahoma City, OK to the late Lewis and Rosa (Conaway) Reed. On August 18, 1951, in Michigan City, IN she married Donald Mallon who preceded her on October 4, 2010.

Surviving are two daughters, Katherine (Shawn) Dominoski of Michigan City, IN and Susan (Richard) Yagelski of Estero Beach, FL; son, Mark Mallon of Michigan City, IN; five grandchildren, Jennifer Locklear, Brian Claeys, Andrew Yagelski, Ryan Yagelski, and Melanie Yagelski; five great-grandchildren, Dexter, Cambryn, Dean, Chloe and Reed; sister, Gwen Dominy of Raleigh, NC; and 18 nieces and nephews.

Rosalie was a graduate of Indiana University was a former member of the Delta Wives. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking and gardening.

Margaret "Peggy"  E. MacLeod,

 76, of Walkerton, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at Miller Health and Rehab, La Porte. 

   

Peggy was born in Gary, IN, on December 19, 1943, to Alexander T. and Elsie Mae (Jones) MacLeod. 

 

Peggy is survived by her sister-in-law, RoseAnn MacLeod of Fish Lake; nephews, Scott (Kerrie) MacLeod of Rolling Prairie, Jason (Julie) MacLeod of Walkerton, and Michael (Amy) MacLeod of Fish Lake; great-nephews, Alex (Hannah) MacLeod, Cody (Shelby) MacLeod, Coleman (Megan Nilson) MacLeod, and Austin (Nicole) MacLeod, great-nieces, Emalee MacLeod and Kinley MacLeod; great-great nephews, Parker, Samuel, and Asher (arriving 8/2020); and great-great niece, Lilah.  Peggy also leaves behind special cousins, Elizabeth MacLean, Sandy Rearick, Dorothy (Dick) Scarborough, Sandra (Paul) Radice, Alex (Marcia) Smith, Susan (Liam McNeil) Jones, Sharon Dielh, her Nova Scotia family; and her beloved cat and constant companion,Quincy.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Alexander "Sandy" MacLeod.

 

Peggy proudly served in the U.S. Army WAC for 6 years.  She was a motor inspector for many years at Bethlehem Steel, Union 6787.  Peggy was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. of Apache Junction, AZ.  She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

 

Peggy enjoyed traveling with her best friend, Sandy Briner.  She also enjoyed swimming and exercising with her friends at the YMCA.  Peggy loved attending all of her nieces and nephew's school and sporting events, always being heard rooting from the stands.  Most of all, Peggy loved and enjoyed life.  When asked about a life lesson to share, she replied, "Life is only so long.  You've got to get up and live it!".

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

 

Due to guidelines established by the State of Indiana in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a Celebration of Life Memorial Service with Military Honors to celebrate Peggy's life will be announced at a later date.

Cynthia Kay Anderson-Holman

Cynthia Kay Anderson-Holman,  65, of Rolling Prairie, passed away peacefully at 10:35 p.m., Tuesday, March 31, 2020 in her home.

 

She was born May 21, 1954, in Gary, Indiana, to Frank Kermit and Gloria Francis (Corbett) Anderson.

 

Cynthia was formerly an industrial engineer and retired as an auditor for the IRS. She was a religious follower of Jesus Christ. Cynthia had a strong passion of dolls. Her and a group of friends created a doll club that restored and created dolls. She also sewed dresses with the Methodist church that she attended. These dresses were sent to children in Haiti. Cynthia also enjoyed playing cards, especially “cheating” at cards. She was a loving wife and was the best mom and sister anyone could have.

 

On October 24, 1992, in La Porte, Indiana, she married Harrison Ray Holman, who survives.

 

Also surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth Holman of Rolling Prairie; three step-children, Andrew Holman of South Bend and Sheryl Kingery and Virginia Kirkland both of Dallas, TX; two sisters, Tina (Garry) Cook of Valparaiso and Kimberly Rhymer of Crown Point; step-grandchildren, Morgan Kirkland, Jessica Holman, and Shelby Holman; niece, April Cook; nephew, Deven Rhymer; best friend, Delia Helpingstine; and their best neighbors, The Motts- Ken and Sherri.

 

Preceding her in death were her parents; and one sister, Rebecca Anderson.

Charles Eugene Smith

Charles Eugene Smith went to be with his creator on April 6, 2020, at the age of 87.  

 

He was born September 6, 1932, in Independence, Missouri, to Theodore Franklin Smith and Coila Alva (Tienken) Smith.

 

Charles was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and later ran for County Assessor for Kansas City, Mo.  He moved to the Phoenix Metropolitan area in the 1970s.  Charles joined the Camelback Mountain Lions club where Barry Goldwater was a member and became their President.  Through the Lions Club, Charles hosted a Foreign Exchange Student, Yasuko Matsumoto, who became a lifelong friend and part of the family.

 

He spent the rest of his career working in the financial services industry. He received many awards during his working career. Charles never met a stranger and always knew everyone in his neighborhood.  He loved having family and friends come to visit and he always had room for them to stay.  Charles loved to travel as well as just find a back road and spend time sightseeing.   One of his favorite places was Las Vegas for their shows and to show off his BlackJack skills.  Of course, he was always a WINNER!  He was an avid soccer fan. Charles played soccer until he was 65 years old.  He loved going and watching the kids and grandkids play. Charles also had a deep love for animals. He loved the routine visits from the local wildlife.

Charles is survived by his eight children, Patricia (Jim) Phillippe, Marcia Velazquez, Marc (Mary) Smith, Susan (Rick) Cary, Heather (Dave) Hacker, Matthew (April) Smith, Abby Smith, Sara Leathers; sixteen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

 

Preceding in death were his parents, Theodore Smith and Coila Jones; sister, Billie Smith King, brother, Gerald “Chris” Smith; and grandson, Ben Velazquez.

Donald Lotter, 61, of Mill Creek, passed away peacefully at 2:03 p.m., Thursday, April 2, 2020, at La Porte Hospital.

 

He was born March 6, 1959, in La Porte, Indiana, to Coy and Beulah Bell (Hancock) Lotter.

 

Donnie worked as a carpenter most of his life, but worked at A & R Truss, New Buffalo, MI, and Aero Metals, La Porte, IN. He liked to fish, read, watch movies and spend time with family. He was always happy and joking with everyone. He would do anything for anyone.

 

Surviving are his six siblings, Daniel F. Lotter of La Porte, Donna S. (Harold) Rowe of New Buffalo, MI, Diana J. (Jerry) McCoy, Dora D. (Clyde) Armstrong, Douglas L. Lotter and Dewayne C. Lotter all of Mill Creek, IN; five nieces; two nephews; nine great-nieces; three great-nephews; one great-great-niece; one great-great-nephew; and his beloved dogs, Lightning and Magnum (His babies).

 

Preceding in death were his parents; one brother, Dennis William Lotter; and two sisters-in-law, Kaye, and Dorothy Lotter.

Gerald "Jerry" Joseph Ward, 58, of La Porte, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at his home. 

   

Jerry was born in Gary, IN, on February 23, 1962, to Ronald Wayne and Carol June (Truth) Ward. 

 

On August 15, 2016, he became engaged to Carla Novreske, who survives.  Also  surviving are his children, Benji Kidd of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Scott (Becca Ridge) Ward of Huntsville, AL, Evan Ward of Charlevoix, MI, and Gracie Ward of Charlevoix, MI; stepdaughter, Megan (Chris) Rodgers of La Porte; brother, Wayne (Cindi Delich) Ward of Valparaiso; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Cheryl "Sherry" Ward; and grandparents, Paul and Margurette Truth and Benjamin and Virginia Ward.

 

Jerry was an Entertainer on Marco Island, Florida for many years.  He also entertained at Put-In-Bay, Ohio and New York, New York Casino in Las Vegas, in addition to local entertainment.  Not only was he singing his career, but also his passion.  He had the honor to meet and open for stars like Tanya Tucker, Tammy Wynette, and Merle Haggard.  He loved people and enjoyed making them laugh.  Jerry also enjoyed cooking and dinner parties.  He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Fraternity.  Jerry studied music and business administration at Valparaiso University.  He had a thirst for knowledge.

Frances "Fran" Arlene Rameier, 93, of La Porte, IN, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2020, at Miller's Health and Rehab in La Porte.

 

She was born November 18, 1926, in Walkerton, Indiana, the daughter of Russell and Mildred (Balsbaugh) Bierly.

 

On September 24, 1984, Fran married her husband of 38 years, Myron Rameier and together they owned Ideal Farm Dairy in La Porte.

 

Fran was a member of the Salem Chapel United Methodist Church, Charm 'n Chatter Box Extension Homemaker Club, Swanson Activity Center, and La Porte Camera & Travel Club. She was a volunteer at La Porte Hospital and was always on the go, doing day trips with local groups.

 

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Mellema of NieuwScheemda, Province of Groningen, Netherlands; Sister, Lois Hagglund of La Porte;  three grandchildren, Jennifer McSurley of La Porte, JurgenMellema and Angela Mellema of the Netherlands; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 great great grandson and several cousins, nieces and nephews

 

Fran was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Rodger Rameier, brothers, Norman and Russell Bierly; sisters, Donna Molden, Marsha Bierly, and Ruth Stolte and 1 great-grandchild.

Tina Lynn Hamlin

Tina Lynn Hamlin, 52, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2020, at La Porte Hospital.

 

Tina was born on January 3, 1968, in Nebraska to Charles and Linda Hamlin.

 

Surviving are her children, Constance Searing, Matthew Rancatore and Dillon Hamlin; 11 grandchildren; and her life partner, Ernie Martinez.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents. 

 

Tina worked as a server for over 15 years at the Waterford Inn many years ago.  She enjoyed spending time with her grandkids when she could.

Burke Larry Pittman "Bojack"

Burke Larry Pittman “Bojack” was born on June 10, 1950, in Little Rock, Arkansas to the late Essie Mae Gillespie and the late Larry Pittman. After his mother untimely death, he moved up to Michigan City, Indiana where he was raised by his late grandmother Fannie Mae Gillespie.

In 1970, Burke Larry Pittman graduated from Elston High School in Michigan City, Indiana.

After graduation, his adventures begin to move him to California. So many friends, close buddies he met there. One such buddy (who was already in Cali) was the late Joe Oda Jr. When those two got together it was magic, those guys would have you laughing so hard you thought the party would never end. Yes, they started out as childhood friends in MC, but Joe left for the military then moved to Atlanta, but they kept that brotherly love thing going right up till Joe’s death in Atlanta Ga.

Also in California, he met his significant other Willie Mae Gooden, they later moved to her home town in Texarkana Arkansas where they opened up a Barbeque Pit which I heard, “People would come from miles around just to get a taste”. While in Texas he joined the St. James Missionary Church where he sang in the male chorus.

He left Arkansas and return back to Michigan City from the early year of 2000 where he still resided up to his death.
Bojack was called home on Friday, April 3, 2020, in Michigan City, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents Essie M. Gillespie and Larry Pittman, along with his immediate family: Fannie Mae Gillespie, Ethel Mildred Gillespie, and Elroy Gillespie.: Special friends: Lisa Smith, LaVern Dunlap, and Shirley Coats

Bojack leaves to cherish his memories. His son Brandon, two loving aunts Corrine Gillespie of Michigan City IN., Ethel Lou (late Otis) Akins of LaPorte IN., his “little” cousins Cindy Gillespie, Barbara Gillespie, and Jimmy (Nova) Gillespie, the Akins men, and Wanda, the O’Neal family, the Coats family, the Collier family, the Oda family, Carolyn Rowland, Sheila Bond, Edmond Collier, Ricky Olds, Sandra Hutson, Denise Jackson, and Pastor Carnes and his church members at the Freedom in the Word ministry to name just a few. Leaving behind also with fond memories of Bojack are his other friends and family members to great in numbers to mention (you know who you are) never forget he loved each and every one of you.

Marion Wanser Jones

Marion Wanser Jones passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, at home with her family.

  

Marion was born on June 4, 1934, in Long Branch, New Jersey.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Margaret Wanser and sons, Allen and Kenny Jones.

 

Marion is survived by her son, Steven "T-Bone" (Connie) Jones; daughter-in-law, Betsy Jones; 6 grandchildren, Jason (Jamie) Jones, Jon Jones, Kendra (A.J.) Bradburn, Jenna (Brian) Trethewey, Kelsey (Andy) Bogard, and Melissa Jones; 5 great-grandchildren, Kenny and Jenifer Talboon, Emily and Will Trethewey, and Maggie Bradburn.

 

The family would like to give recognition for the care given by Mary Ann Engle and Lovie Rhodes.  Special thanks to Betsy Jones, Nancy Shannon, and Julia DesLauriers.

 

Marion came to the La Porte area with her husband, Gene (divorced), to raise her family.

 

Marion’s true passion was horses and she passed her love for them on to her sons.  She was the backbone to their success in many competitions.

 

Marion was employed at GTE as a switchboard operator for many years.  She loved softball, playing for local teams. She was an avid fan of the Notre Dame Women’s Basketball program.  Marion enjoyed reading, playing cards, collecting sports memorabilia, and gardening.  Although quiet, Marion enjoyed talking with those she held dear.

 

It was Marion’s choice to be cremated, which has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Carole R. Werner, 83, of La Porte, IN, died April 5, 2020, at Golden Living Center in La Porte, IN. 

 

She was born on October 30, 1936, in La Porte, daughter of LeRoy and Lucille (Wolla) Werner.

A member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Union Mills for many years, Carole worked as a Trust Officer at Union State Bank, Valley American Bank, and LaPorte Bank and Trust. She was a woman who loved many things in life. Carole loved to travel the world and took many trips to Europe. She was a Master Gardner who always had a yard full of flowers and plants, exhibiting a green thumb. In addition, Carole was a bird watcher and would sit for hours observing them at home with her precious cat "Baby" on her lap. She knew all the types of birds that would come visit with her. Carole truly loved animals. Her favorite singer was Josh Groban.

 

Surviving are nephew Mark Smit of Midland, MI, niece, Adrienne Smit of OR, brother-in-law, C. W. Smit of OR; personal friends Deanna  Schweizer, and Susan  Kieffer.

 

Carole was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Joanna Werner and Kathryn Smit.

Due to CORVID-19, a memorial service will be planned for a later date at Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave. La Porte, IN 46350 with Pastor Bob Vale officiating.  Interment will follow in the Union Mills Cemetery, Union Mills, IN.

Nancy A. (Nano) Henry, 87, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Monday, April 6, 2020, at 7:00 am in her home.

Surviving are three sons, Michael (Barbara) Henry of Joliet, Illinois, Thomas (Francesca) Henry of Barcelona, Spain and Kevin Henry of Evanston, Illinois; daughter, Eileen Henry of Michigan City, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Jenny, Michael, Matt, Caitlin, Dylan, Klara and Hank; four great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Joseph, Lilyann, and Annabelle; three sisters, Mary (William) Ryan of Hinsdale, Illinois, Bernadette Lynch of Dublin, Ireland and Colette (Kasim) Blan of Park Ridge, Illinois.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Colleen Henry; two sisters, Theresa Beforth and Veronica Mattera; 3 brothers, Noel (Ann), Joe (the late Kathleen) and Frank (Dr Mary) Burke; and daughter-in-law, Doro Boehme.

She enjoyed preparing lavish holiday meals for her family and doted on her grandchildren. Along with her late husband, she was an avid golfer and bridge player and was an active member of and zealous fundraiser for Notre Dame Catholic Church, Michigan City Indiana.

Craig Joseph Dudeck

Craig Joseph Dudeck, 70, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, 2020, in his home.

 

He was born June 21, 1949, in South Bend, Indiana, to Casimier and Dorothy (Michalski) Dudeck.

 

Craig formerly was a volunteer firefighter for Center Township for several years. He worked in security at Blue Chip Casino. Craig was strong-willed, had a big heart, and a great sense of humor. He was very personable and approachable for everyone, knowing many people out and about in town and at the grocery store. Craig was a wonderful husband and father.

 

On August 16, 1969, in South Bend, Indiana, he married, Diana Sue (Jaronik) Dudeck, who preceded him in death on January 23, 2014.

 

Also preceding in death were his parents.

 

Surviving are his three children, Kimberlee (Brian) Holleran of Princeton Junction, New Jersey, Amie (Doug) Widrig of Boardman, Ohio and Jason Dudeck of La Porte; and nine grandchildren, Connor, Jack, Bridget, and Ronan Holleran, Hudson, Mackenzie, and Griffin Widrig and Alec and Braydon Dudeck.

Bernita Marlene Liberatore

Bernita Marlene Liberatore, beloved and treasured wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend passed away at the age of 87 on April 4, 2020, at her home in LaPorte, Indiana.  She was born on March 26, 1933, as the second child of Elmer & Evonda Kale in Richwood, Ohio.

 

Shortly after graduating from Byhalia High School, Bernita worked as a secretary at the Mount Victory School, then worked at Economy Savings & Loan Bank in Marion, Ohio. On May 6, 1956, she married Dominic Joseph Liberatore. They were a loving and happily married couple for over 57 years, until Dominic passed away on September 8, 2013. Dominic & Bernita resided in LaPorte, Indiana since 1978, where Dominic had completed his 38.5-year career with JC Penney Company as the local store manager. In addition to her full devotion to Dominic and their children, Bernita worked as an elementary school librarian (Auburn, Indiana) and school media resource director (Ft. Madison, Iowa). Bernita enjoyed a successful 15-year career as a real estate agent-broker in LaPorte inspiring her son, Michael, to follow in her footsteps. She also selflessly gave in extraordinary measures of her time and treasure to her church and to serving the needy in her community.

 

Bernita and Dominic were visionaries and doers. Their passions sprung from their deep Christian faith reflected in humility and constant, selfless love for one another, their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family, as well as their church, friends, and community. Bernita was a member of the LaPorte First United Methodist Church for 41 years where Dominic and Bernita planned and helped launch the church’s contemporary worship service 20 years ago which they deeply treasured for the remainder of their lives. Bernita actively assisted Dominic in the founding and development of numerous community service programs, including Lions Alert (providing emergency alert service for more than 240 elderly in LaPorte County), Meals on Wheels, and Fort LaPlay Porte. After Dominic’s passing, Bernita actively continued her extensive and meaningful volunteer service with the church, the Lions Alert program, and the LaPorte Hospital Auxiliary.

 

Bernita was preceded in death by Dominic Joseph Liberatore (husband of 57+ years) and two siblings (Richard Kale and DeLynn Kale). Gloria Cunningham of Marysville, Ohio is her only surviving sibling.

 

Bernita is also survived by her loving children: Michael (Joann) Liberatore of LaPorte, Indiana; Joseph (Cheryl) Liberatore of Chesapeake, Virginia; Nita (Jim) Gafken of Brownwood, Texas; and Greg (Lori) Liberatore of Jacksonville, Florida. Dominic & Bernita were blessed with 15 grandchildren: Ashley, Adam, Danielle, Michelle, Tyler, Zachery, Erin, John Michael, Kara, Gregory, Shawn, Taylor, Christian, Courtney, and Hunter; and 19 great-grandchildren. Above all, Bernita is deeply and infinitely treasured by her entire family as the ultimate role model of a Christian, who expressed boundless love as a wife, mother, grandparent, faithful church member, friend and selfless community volunteer. Bernita valued everyone as a treasured child of God which allowed her to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds. She faithfully prayed daily for each family member, as well as for countless others.

 

A memorial service celebrating Bernita’s life will be held at a future date to be determined at the LaPorte First United Methodist Church, 1225 Michigan Avenue, LaPorte, Indiana. The family will be greeting friends and relatives at the church after the service.

Barbara E. McDowell

Barbara E. McDowell, 51, of Hamlet, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 4, 2020, in La Porte County.

 

She was born February 14, 1969, in Hammond, IN, to Darrell and Linda (Goforth) Brown.

Barbara worked as the housekeeping and laundry supervisor for Health Care Services, Valparaiso, IN.  She also worked for White Lodging Services, The Courtyard By Marriott in Valparaiso, IN.  Barbara enjoyed being on a bike, shopping, and spending time with friends.  She was loved by many and will be lovingly remembered as a giver who enjoyed taking care of others.  On May 14, 2013, in Gatlinburg, TN, she married Levi McDowell, who survives.

 

Also surviving are 3 children, Adam (Shelby West) Brown of La Porte, John Porras of La Porte, Bryan Porras of Hamlet; 3 brothers, John (Betty Sue) Isaacs of Turlock, CA, Bill Brown of Portage, IN and Tom (Carrie) Brown of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and 9 grandchildren. Preceding in death were her parents.

Eric Martin Rekowski

Eric Martin Rekowski, 43, of New Carlisle, Indiana passed away Sunday, April 5, 2020.

Eric was born August 13, 1976, to Hans and Marietta (Oudhuis) Rekowski. On November 8, 2019, he married Maria Lusia Luna Mercado. He is survived by his wife, parents and a brother, Michael Rekowski all of New Carlisle.

 

Eric was an Eagle Scout and graduated from New Prairie High School in 1996. He was employed with Patterson Logistics in South Bend.

Margene L. Bohlim

Margene L. Bohlim, 85, La Porte, Indiana, passed away Friday, April 3, 2020, at 10:10 pm in Trail Creek Place, Michigan City, Indiana.

She was born March 25, 1935, in Michigan City, IN to the late Henry and Maxine (Quinn) Marshall. On August 1, 1953, in Michigan City, Indiana she married Anthony W. Bohlim who preceded October 26, 2019.

Surviving are three sons, Keith (Lori ) Bohlim of Trail Creek, IN, Wayne (Rosemarie Braun) Bohlim of Sarasota, FL, Stuart (Rita) Bohlim of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren, Ryan (Michelle), Alfred, Nicholas, Marisa Bohlim; three great-grandchildren, Cody Potts, Alexis Potts, Brooke Howard; She was preceded in death by a grandchild, Ryan Howard; brother, John Marshall.

Margene and her late husband owned the M & M Restaurant in Michigan City, IN. They spent years serving meals to their customers and friends. Once Margene retired, she continued to help others by volunteering at St. Anthony's Hospital for nearly 20 years. She was a member of the First Methodist Church and dearly loved her family and spending time at her cottage fishing and being in nature.

Dwight "Eddie" E. Wood Jr,

Dwight “Eddie” E. Wood Jr, 69, of Michigan City, IN passed away at Franciscan Health - Michigan City on Tuesday, March 31, 2020.

He was born November 24, 1950, to Dwight E. and Virginia C. (Antrobus) Wood Sr in Anderson, Indiana.

As a young man, Dwight volunteered to serve his country with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as an Infantryman. He served in Vietnam with the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) and was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant. Dwight maintained his dedication and memories to the military as a member of the local American Legion and V.F.W. Posts. He also regularly attended military reunions at Ft. Benning, Georgia where he spent a great deal of time training while on active duty to include the Noncommissioned Officer Academy and Airborne School. An American flag was always flying proudly at his home.

From the time shortly before joining the Army until his retirement he was employed by what was originally Bethlehem Steel in Burns Harbor, Indiana. He worked as an electrician and later in his career served as a safety officer. Dwight lived most of his adult life in rural N.W. Indiana on several acres of land where he raised a loving family. He spent a great deal of his free time outdoors on his property enjoying life. He lived life selflessly as he dedicated countless hours providing for his family and regularly volunteered his time to his children and their various sporting and other activities. He also followed in his father’s footsteps as a firefighter serving with the local Volunteer Firefighter’s Department. Later in his life, two of his closest friends were his American Bulldogs, Zoe, and Matty.

Dwight was preceded in death by his father, Dwight E. Wood Sr., and his sister, Betty Jane (Wood) McNeal. He is survived by his loving mother, Virginia Wood. Two women dear to him, Terri A. (Finley) Wood and Leslee Roberts. His children, Kari Boyd, Dwight Wood, and Scott (Melissa) Wood. Siblings, Sherry (Donald) Watson, Kathy (Les) King, Ronald (Dianne) Wood. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Private family services will be conducted. He will be buried with military honors at a Swan Lake Memorial Gardens in the veteran's section. A public memorial gathering will be announced at a later date. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN is handling arrangements.

Robert Harley Beck

Robert Harley Beck, 69, of Chesterton, formerly of Michigan City, passed away peacefully at 1:17 p.m., Friday, March 27, 2020, at Symphony of Chesterton.

 

He was born March 18, 1951, in Michigan City, Indiana, to Harley Hendrick Beck and Lois Florence (Baker) Beck.

 

Robert was a dedicated member of the Manitou Island Memorial Society, helping restore the original Beck Family home. He was a former member of Elks Lodge 432, Michigan City. Robert was an avid collector of antiques and collector and producer of stain glass. He was employed for Milton Roy Hays Corp for 13 years, Stephens Seal Corp as plant manager for 14 years and Electro Seal and Northern Indiana Manufacturing for 17 years.

 

Surviving are his son, Jason (Deanna Rennecker) Beck of Fort Wayne; former wife and friend, Patti Beck of Michigan City; former brother-in-law, Paul Mahler of Michigan City; and one granddaughter, Blaire Beck.

 

Preceding in death were his parents; paternal grandparents, Harley and Grace Beck; and maternal grandparents, Robert and Florence Baker.

Linda Louise Lorencz

Linda Louise Lorencz, 75, of La Porte, formerly of San Pierre, passed away peacefully at 5:18 p.m., Monday, March 30, 2020, at La Porte Hospital.

 

Her journey began October 24, 1944, in La Porte County, Indiana, with Louis L. and Freda M. (Hapner) Solmos.

 

Linda was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, San Pierre. She was always up for an adventure. She loved traveling, camping, fishing, planting and watching her garden grow. She especially loved spending time with family and friends and becoming a grandmother and a great grandmother.

 

Linda met Rockford Lorencz and fell in love. They married April 3, 1971, in Knox, Indiana. They blended a family together with their four children. Together they welcomed their son, Stephen Lorencz

 

Surviving are her husband, Rockford Lorencz; four children, James (Annette) Fritzen, Darlene (Jerry) Fritzen Jarrett, Cheryl (Al) Lorencz Bolan and Stephen Lorencz; two siblings, Carol Padgett and Dennis (Velvet) Solmos; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Preceding in death were her parents; one son, Robert Lorencz; and one brother, Charles “Chuckie” Solmos.

George Joseph Bladecki

George Joseph Bladecki, 93, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2020.

George was born February 5, 1927, in La Porte, Indiana to the late Vernie and Josephine (Pekofske) Bladecki.

 

George was a farmer and a member of St. John Kanty Catholic Church where he was a former usher and altar boy.

 

On October 8, 1960, George married Mary Lou (Gearhart) who survives.  He also is survived by his children, George Jr. (Theresa) Bladecki, Kay (Don) Gardner, Julia (Mark) Hendricks, and; grandchildren, Stephanie, George III (Trey), Brittany, Chase, Angela, Brooke, Courtney, Che, Benjamin, and Golda; great-grandchildren, Brock, Hannah, Grace, Levi, Tessa, Ava, Walker, Louella, Cooper, Oliver, Emma and Owen; a sister, Rosella Tuszynski; and son-in-law, Dan Martell.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Larry (Suzanne); daughter, Mary Martell; brothers, Andy, Michael and Frank; sisters, Genevieve and Mary; and many nieces and nephews.

Gregory Scott Wahlig

Gregory Scott Wahlig, 58, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2020.

 

Greg was born December 31, 1961, in La Porte to the late Michael and Patricia (Bradley) Wahlig. Gregger, as known by his family and friends except for his pesky sister who insisted on calling him Bubba, succumbed to cancer. Greg had been ill for a little over two years.  He was one of the most generous, loyal, honest and fun-loving people we were lucky enough to know. He was a friend, brother, uncle, son and dad to the most spoiled cocker spaniel alive, Rogs. 

 

He loved the simple things in life, bonfires, vacationing, sudoku and hanging out at the Moose with friends. Greg learned and followed in his dad’s footsteps working on cars starting at Stans Citco and moving on to become a master mechanic and then supervisor with the city of South Bend where he worked for 19 years.  Those of us who knew and loved him will miss him immensely.  God Speed Greggie, we love you.

 

Greg is survived by a sister, Beth Eckert of Mishawaka, Indiana; a brother, Timothy Wahlig of La Porte, Indiana; and nieces, Genia O’Donnell and Tricia (Robert) Spence.

Mary Meska

Mary Meska, 89, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2020, at 2:16 am in Franciscan Health - Michigan City.

Mary Francis Fleming entered this world on April 09, 1930, as the child of Louise and George Fleming of Michigan City, IN. Because her grandparents owned a grocery store during the Great Depression, she learned to count her blessings. She was preceded in death by her sisters Mona, Corrine, and brother Michael. Mary departed this world at Franciscan Hospital on March 28, 2020, holding the hand of a loving daughter. While working as a candy girl at the Tivoli theater, she met Norman Dittmer, a Navy yeoman in WWII. He finished law school, while Mary became an Indiana Bell operator. They married on April 01, 1950. After his death in 1962, Mary moved their brood to a house on the dunes of Lake Shore Drive. There she raised her beach babies, Susan (Mark) Lauer, Champlin Mn, Daniel (Anne) Dittmer, Michigan City, Mona Dittmer and Patricia Dittmer, Michigan City. She also raised her younger brother Michael (Kathy)Fleming, Westville. She married Frank Bishop in 1963, soon adding their beautiful daughters Bonnie & Debbie Bishop to the family. They have preceded her in death. In later years, Mary married Robert Meska, a retired Air Force veteran. They enjoyed wintering in Florida, golfing, and spending time with friends at the VFW, where Mary was an auxiliary member. Mary loved to share a laugh, go to the lake, soak in the sunshine, play scrabble, watch the wheel, read, sew, crochet, and cuddle up with her darling dachshund mix, Sasha. Mary had a happy heart, listening ear, generous spirit, and found great joy in her close relationships with her children, grandchildren, Megan (Tyson)Lauer, (Minneapolis), Rachael Lauer (Champlin, MN), Jessica, Andrew, and Danielle Dittmer, (Michigan City), Katrina (Brandon) Steinhiser, (Michigan City), and great-grandchildren Kendra Lamberg, Natalia Brinker, and Levi Dittmer. Mary will always be cherished as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Joann Rusboldt

Joann Rusboldt, 89, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Friday, March 27, 2020, at 9:08 am at Silver Birch of Michigan City.

She was born July 28, 1930, in Canton, Illinois to the late Glenn and Josephine (Eshelman) DeFord. On April 24, 1954, in Great Lakes, IL she married Charles Rusboldt who preceded her on December 12, 2009.

Surviving are daughter, Kay Ellen (Thomas) Wilkerson of Fayetteville, AR; five Sons, Greg (Maria) Rusboldt of San Jose, CA, Mark (Marcia) Rusboldt of Oviedo, FL, Bill (Mary) Rusboldt of Denver, CO, Joseph Rusboldt of Trail Creek, IN and Matthew (Jennifer) Rusboldt of LaPorte, IN; 19 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her son, Eddie Rusboldt; and two sisters, Lois Stanko and Doris Young.

She worked for Illinois Bell Telephone as a telephone operator and then for many years was the bookkeeper for Rusboldt Shell, which was owned by Charlie and Joann. Mrs. Rusboldt was a member of R.S.V.P. of Valparaiso, IN, REAL Services, and the Young at Heart Club of St. Stanislaus Church, Michigan City, IN. After high school, she enjoyed traveling to Florida and California as well as the Grand Canyon. She was the adventurer, the one who organized and drove her girlfriends across the country, knowing no bounds. She enjoyed sewing, traveling and participating in many different entertainment activities such as concerts, watching the Harlem Globetrotters and Rodeos. Charlie and she enjoyed camping in Pierceton, Indiana at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park where they met and enjoyed many camping friends.

Guinevere Cynda Slutzkin

On Monday, March 30, 2020, Guinevere Cynda (Cook) Slutzkin, loving wife, mother of three children and grandmother of one grandchild, passed away at age 75 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.


Gwen was born on September 21, 1944 in Michigan City, Indiana to George and Florence (Robinson) Cook. On February 24, 1968, she married Michael J. Slutzkin. They raised two daughters, Tracy and Joy, and one son, Jay.

Gwen had a passion for early childhood education. She received her Masters in Education from Indiana University. She taught kindergarten and owned a daycare center for many years. Gwen was a member of Tri Kappa and volunteered for several Catholic charities.

Gwen loved spending the day at the beach, cooking, entertaining and being with her family and friends. She was an incredible writer and enjoyed gardening, swimming and water aerobics. She was known for her selfless giving, her beautiful infectious smile, and her kind and generous heart.

Gwen was preceded in death by her father, George, her mother, Florence and her husband Michael. She is survived by her three children, Tracy, Joy (Dave Hatch) and Jay (Jamie), her grandson, Samuel, and her sister-in-law Lynne (Slutzkin) Fargher and husband Dr. John Fargher.

A memorial will be celebrated in memory of Gwen for family and friends at a later date. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association.
