Linda J. Meadows

Linda J. Meadows, 70, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2020, at Goshen Hospital.

 

Linda was born on August 2, 1949, in Marinette, WI, to Eahart and Gladys (Wayberg) Westlund.

 

On August 30, 1969, in Michigan City, she married Leslie D. Meadows who preceded her in death.  Surviving are her children, Deanna (Robert) Moyer of Beckley, WV and Shane (Christina) Meadows of Hobart; 4 grandchildren, Jesse, Nathan, Andrew, and Kayleen; brothers, Gene (Beverly) Westlund of Medaryville, Dewayne (Rita) Westlund of Westville, and David (Melissa) Westlund of Michigan City; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earhart and Gladys Westlund.

 

Linda worked for La Porte County for more than 30 years, before her retirement. She enjoyed quilting and attending country music concerts and book conventions.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  A private family service will take place on February 1, 2020.

Judith Ann Caddo

Judith Ann Caddo, 72, May 23, 1947 - January 29, 2020, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2020, at 6:09 am in Franciscan Health - Michigan City, Indiana.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, February 3, 2020, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN with Pastor Mark Reshan officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Chapel in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm -5:00 pm, Sunday, February 2, 2020, and from 9:00 am until time service Monday, February 3, 2020, at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.

Dr. George P. (Pete) Backer

Dr. George P. (Pete) Backer passed away at his home in La Porte, Indiana on January 30, 2020. He was born in Ferdinand, Indiana, the son of Dr. Henry G. and Frances McLaughlin Backer.  Pete was the oldest of twelve children.

 

His elementary school education was in Ferdinand except for one year with his grandfather in Indianapolis. His high school years were memorable for taking the train to school in Huntingburg and for serving for a time as the train’s bookkeeper.

 

He volunteered to join the Navy in January 1944 and attended college at Indiana University until he was called up in 1945.  He was trained as an electronics and sonar technician in the Navy at Great Lakes, Gulfport, Mississippi, and then Bremerton, Washington. While not involved in combat due to the war ending with Japan, he helped decommission ships in Bremerton, Washington. 

 

He finished pre-med at Indiana University and then went to the IU School of Medicine in Bloomington and Indianapolis graduating in 1951. He interned at the Indianapolis General (now Eskenazi) Hospital. He practiced with his father in general practice for two years in Ferdinand before going back to Indianapolis to complete a radiology residency at the Indiana University Medical Center. He married Mary Barbara Yeager on June 19, 1954, and later joined Dr. John Scott’s radiology practice in LaPorte, IN in 1957. He was on the medical staff of LaPorte Hospital from 1957 until retirement in 1994, serving multiple times as chairman of the Radiology Department. He was a member of the American College of Radiology, the American Medical Association, served as President of the LaPorte County Medical Society in 1963 and was active on many medical committees and community projects. He and his wife Barbara enjoyed international travel to explore art, history and other cultures.  He enjoyed reading, gardening, and sailing at the family cottage on Lake Michigan, and had passions for movies, jazz music, and educational TV. He will be remembered as a beloved patriarch of the family.         

  

He is survived by his wife of 65 years M. Barbara Backer, M.D., his children, Linda Sirugo, MD (David) La Porte, Mark Backer, Ph.D. Foster City, California, David Backer, MBA (Mary) Carlsbad, California, B. Timothy Backer MMC, South Bend and Laura Backer MD, Bellingham, Washington and his 12 grandchildren  Anna Sirugo, Alex Sirugo, Teressa Sirugo, Domenic Sirugo, Sofia Sirugo, Victor Sirugo, Simone Backer, Adrian Backer, Evan Backer, Grace Backer, Kate Backer, and Claire Backer. He is survived by his siblings Sister Phyllis Backer, MMS of Philadelphia, Marge Backer of Ferdinand, Indiana, Thomas Backer of Erlanger, Kentucky, Joseph Backer, MD of Arlington, Virginia as well as multiple nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents and siblings John, Henry, David, Lawrence, Mary Jo Uebelhor, Patrick, and Sue Hasenour.    

   

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, February 7, 2020, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana, La Porte, Indiana, where a Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 8, 2020, at St. Peter Catholic Church, La Porte, Indiana.  Reverend Ian Williams will officiate. Burial will follow in Pine Lake Cemetery. Family & friends may gather at 9 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Mable Lunsford Gorley

Mable Lunsford Gorley, 85, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 11:05 a.m., Tuesday, January 28, 2020, at VNA Hospice Center, Valparaiso.

 

She was born September 19, 1934, in Kewanna, Indiana, to Charles and Lula (Arion) Latta.

 

Mable attended Lambs Chapel United Methodist Church, La Porte and Faith City Assembly of God, Michigan City. She faithfully read the word of God from her Bible. Mable enjoyed country music and singing karaoke at Waterford Inn. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Mable was very forward and opinionated in a loving way. We will remember her laughing, telling stories and reminiscing family memories. She will be dearly missed by her family.

 

Surviving are her six children, Kandi Griffith of Bloomington, IN, Mark Lunsford of Janesville, WI, Doneta Jonsson of Fridley, MN, Mike Lunsford of Cedar Springs, MI, Daniel Lunsford of Moose Lake, MN and Deanna Laughlin of La Porte, IN; three siblings, Melvin, Earl, and William Latta; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

 

Preceding in death were her parents; first husband, Donald Lunsford; former husband, Walter Gorley; one daughter, Mayetta Ivesdal; and four siblings, Velda, Floyd, Wanda and Mitch.

 

Cremation will take place. A committal service will be held at 12 Noon, Friday, February 7, 2020, at Swan Lake Cemetery, Chapel, Patio Blvd., Michigan City with Pastor Jay Loucks officiating. Carl P. Holifield

Carl P. Holifield, age 74, February 10, 1945 – January 28, 2020,  passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 28th, surrounded by his family in his Mill Creek home. He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl M. and Mary Joe (McFall) Holifield; his brother, Jack Holifield, and his sisters, Jill Wright and Joy Cullison.

 

Carl is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carol (Chorba) and his five children: Steve of La Porte; Jim (Kim) of La Porte; Mike (Lee) of Washington, DC; Joe of Austin, TX; and Kathi (Eric) of Anderson, IN. Carl loved spending time with his 15 grandchildren: Travis, Chris, Katie, Samantha, Rachael, Allison, Victoria, Alayna, Tabby, Erin, James, Jonathan, Olivia, and Emma Grace. Carl is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

 

Carl was born in Paragould, Arkansas, on Feb. 10, 1945. He graduated from Calumet High School in 1962 and went on to work for NIPSCO, retiring after 34 years. He and Carol then owned and operated McFalls Restaurant & Pub in LaPorte and McFalls Channel Cafe in Fish Lake for 16 years. Carl enjoyed fishing, wood-working, cooking, cheering on the Chicago Cubs, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

 

Visitation will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, January 31, and 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, February 1. The funeral service will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 1. Carl will be laid to rest at Oak Grove Cemetery in Wills Township immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Dunes Hospice (4711 Evans Ave., Valparaiso, IN 46383), or a charitable organization of the donor’s choice.

David M. Stanley

David M. Stanley, 47, of Michigan City, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2020 at his home. 

   

David was born in La Porte, IN, on June 7, 1972 to Don and Doris (Schmaltz) Stanley. 

 

Surviving are his mother, Doris Stanley of Michigan City; brother, Jim Stanley of La Porte; 5 nieces, Krystle (Trevor) Beals of Spencerville, IN, Andrea Stanley of Indianapolis, Amanda (Kylle) Arnold of Fort Bliss, TX, and Heather and Jamie Stanley, both of Charlotte, NC, and 3 godchildren, Kyle Curry, Anna Sharp and Emma Sharp, all of La Porte.

 

He was preceded in death by his father, Don Stanley and nephew, Ronnie Bodenheimer.

 

David was a maintenance supervisor for many years at Central States Manufacturing.  He enjoyed fishing, making annual trout fishing trips to North Carolina.  David also enjoyed motorcycles, cooking, and crafting beer and wine.  He was a talented marksman.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

   

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2020 at La Porte Missionary Church, 104 E. 18th St, La Porte, with Pastor Steve Galloway officiating.  The family encourages a time of sharing memories for anyone who cares to do so.

Michael "Mike" L. Mathis

Michael "Mike" L. Mathis, 64, of La Porte, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at La Porte Hospital and Health Services.

 

Mike was born on October 18, 1955 in Goshen, IN, to Wilbur and Sonja (Harrison) Mathis.

 

Surviving are his mother, Sonja Mathis of La Porte; sisters, Sherry Grubb of OH, Candy (Charlie) Evans of La Porte, and Tami Frame of La Porte; stepdaughter, Alyse James of FL; several nieces and nephews; as well as several great-nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his father; maternal grandparents, Hollis and Marie Harrison; and paternal grandparents, Phreno and Carrie Mathis

 

Mike was a machine operator for many years.  He enjoyed golfing, bowling, attending concerts, cooking and landscaping.  Mike loved to sing and had a beautiful voice.  He enjoyed spending time with friends that he considered family.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Rick Jones officiating.  Cremation and interment will take place at a later date.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Norman Lee Gridley, 78, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 3:24 p.m., Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at La Porte Hospital.

Wayne A. Wedding, 66, of La Porte, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at La Porte Hospital and Health Services. 

   

Wayne was born in Connersville, IN, on July 3, 1953 to Eugene and Josephine (Hendricks) Wedding. 

 

On April 24, 1970, in Portland, IN, he married Carla Olsen who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Becky Wedding of La Porte, Kim (Craig) Majcher of La Porte, and Wayne (Tasha) Wedding of Knox; 10 grandchildren, Nathan (Kendra) Majcher, Austin Lewis, Tionna Wedding, Alexis Lewis, Cole Wedding, Alexis Arthur, Nicholas Majcher, Blake Wedding, Mackenize Wedding and Kaylee Wedding, all of La Porte; 2 sisters, Mardale and Kay; 1 brother, Gene; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 sisters, Shirley, Connie, Donnie, and Chrissy; son, Tony Wedding; and 2 grandsons, Ethan and Chase Majcher.

 

Wayne had plenty of jobs though out the years, but he was best known for truck driving and being a maintenance man at La Porte Hospital.

Natalie Deanna Worthen

Natalie Deanna Worthen, 80, of Walkerton, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2020 at La Porte Hospital and Health Services. 

   

Natalie was born in Gary, IN, on June 17, 1939 to Nichola and Frances (Nicewicz) Kragulac. 

 

On December 31, 1955, she married Richard Bloomquist, who preceded her in death.  Later, she married Robert "Gene" Worthen, with whom she enjoyed 12 years of marriage.  Also surviving are her children, Jeffrey (Judith) Bloomquist of Gainesville, FL, Daniel Bloomquist of Indianapolis, and Donald (Bernice) Bloomquist of Valparaiso; 5 grandchildren, William (Ashley) Bloomquist of Utica, NY, Robert Bloomquist of Cincinnati, OH, Andrew Bloomquist of San Antonio, TX, Zack (Jenn) Bloomquist of Chesterton, and Jake Bloomquist of Michigan City; sister, Rosalie Yovanich of Cicero, IN; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and 7 siblings.

 

Natalie was a veal farmer for many years.  She also worked at St. John's Thrift Shop.  Natalie was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church for over 19 years.  She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, patching clothing, and camping. Natalie also loved to bake.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

   

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 27, 2020, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Ron Brauer officiating.

Hugh Alan Smith

Hugh Alan Smith, 90, of Venice, Florida, passed away peacefully into heavenly arms on Monday, December 30, 2019 at Tidewell Lakewood Ranch Hospice House, Lakewood Ranch, Florida.

 

Hugh was born on May 2, 1929 in Cincinnati, Ohio to James and Julia Smith.

 

On November 1, 1947, he married Mary Jacqueleen Floth Thompson.  Celebrating 52 years of marriage, she passed away on January 11, 2000.

 

Together they had eight children: Dawn Wetmore, Ricky Smith (deceased), Jim (Katie) Smith, Hugh M. Smith (deceased), Cary (Rita) Smith, Mary Jacqueleen Smith (deceased), Eugene "Dino" (Sherry) Smith, and Julie Ann (Donald) Gibertini.

 

18 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren and 2 more greats on the way...

He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

 

In his later years, he was deeply loved by Carol Ostby and her extended family.

 

He will be greatly missed.

 

He became the business manager of The La Porte Press in November of 1969 and retired to travel and then settled in Mesa, Arizona.

 

In November of 1993, he made the decision that after his death he would donate his body to Indiana University School of Medicine.  We have honored his wishes.

 

For his last couple of years, he had resided at Tuscan Gardens of Venetia Bay Assisted Living in Venice, Florida.

 

Do something special for someone in memory of our Dad/Grandpa/Great-Grandpa, he would like that.

Delbert Francis "Del" Sammelman, Sr

Delbert Francis "Del" Sammelman, Sr., 81, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 8:20 pm in his home.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 pm, Monday, January 27, 2020 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Buffalo & 10th Streets, Michigan City, Indiana with  Rev. Kevin Huber officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with full military services conducted by American Legion Skwiat Post 451 and the V.F.W. 2536. William "Bill" Hager

William “Bill” Hager, of La Porte, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at home with his family by his side.

 

A funeral celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte (219) 362-3100 with Pastor Roger Ash officiating.  Visitation and viewing will be from 4 – 8 p.m., Friday, January 24, 2020 and from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek immediately following services.  A military honors service will be conducted by the La Porte Honor Guard.

Faith Marie Blacksten

Faith Marie Blacksten, 56, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2020 at La Porte Hospital and Health Services in La Porte, Indiana.

Faith was born on November 16, 1963 in Michigan City, IN, to Harry and Carolyn (Wilson) Blacksten.

Surviving are her daughter, Nicole (David) Syler of Largo, FL; 3 grandchildren, Lilliana Graham, Dylan Syler and Teagan Syler; brother, David (Lori) Leslie of La Porte; aunt, Loretta Wilson; cousin, Jennie Mullins of La Porte; as well as other aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers, Frank P. and Benjamin Wilson.

Faith was a receptionist for On Guard Security in Florida.  She enjoyed eagles, riding her motorcycle and reading her Bible.  Faith loved her puppy, Cuddles, so much that she had his name tattooed on her arm.  She especially loved her "baby girl", Nicole, and her grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Paul G. Maltby

Paul G. Maltby, 82, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020.
Paul was born August 10, 1937, in Grand Rapids Michigan to Phillip J. and Gladys R. (Forbush) Maltby. 

 

On September 13, 1956, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Paul married Idalene Jones who preceded him in death on August 30, 2003.
Paul is survived by three daughters, Jackie Louise of Walkerton, Gladys (Sonny Collinge) Vehrs of Steger, Illinois and Jeri Maltby of Steger, Illinois; a son, Michael (Leona) Maltby of Lowell, Indiana; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Muriel Peterson of Walkerton, Indiana.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and siblings, Lee Allen and Val Jean Maltby.
Paul retired from Illinois Bell after many years.  He was a member of the Son’s of the American Legion, Post 400 Fish Lake. 
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, January 25, 2020, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana, where a memorial service will begin at 12:30 p.m.
