Frances's professional life was marked by her pioneering spirit and commitment to service. It all began when she was eligible to drive and taxied the Otis Nuns for their weekly groceries. She organized many events for the Otis Parish including one which invited both political parties to attend and have equal opportunities to speak. She began her career as a telephone operator with Indiana Bell where she made history by placing the first international call from Michigan City and dedicating 20 years to the company. She took a break to raise her daughter, then continued her service to the community by joining the La Porte Community Schools in Food Service at Kesling School for 11 years. She loved getting out working with people and finished up her career in food promotions in stores before retiring at 80 years old.

A woman of deep faith, Frances was a devoted member of Holy Family Parish, Sacred Heart Church. Her faith was the foundation upon which she built her life, and it was reflected in her loving and generous nature. Frances was a beacon of light in her community, always extending a helping hand and a warm smile to those in need.

Travel, dining out, and tending to her beautiful garden were among Frances's favorite pastimes. She had a passion for flowers, and her garden was a testament to her love for nature's beauty. Frances also enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, such as attending concerts, dancing, and the occasional visit to the casino. She lived life to the fullest, embracing every moment with enthusiasm and without any regrets. Frances’ often attributed her longevity of 99 years to her love for white flour, salt & sugar, hard work, and of course bacon—a testament to her spirited and humorous take on life.

Carol received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Indiana University in 1974. A four-year break in her studies at the university as a flight attendant with Braniff International Airlines instilled a love of travel in her. Although she studied education, her career path took her in the direction of a career in travel and tourism. Her many positions in travel included Travel Advisor with Redden Travel Bureau, Office Manager with AirCare Travel, Sales Representative with Forlow Tours, Sales and Catering Manager with Adams Mark Hotel, Manager with Indiana Hotel & Lodging Association, Executive Director of Indiana Hospitality & Tourism Foundation with Livengood & Associates, and Director of Operations for Edgerton's Travel Service. She spent a year taming one, Tux, who became her companion for more than 20 years. She also worked with a wildlife rehabilitation organization and helped to rescue and transport endangered waterfowl. She was also known to feed the geese from the neighborhood pond, much to her neighbors' chagrin.

After retirement, she led a quiet life, playing with her cats, daily walks to the store, and watching her favorite TV programs, Murder She Wrote, Mash, and the Game Show Network. She loved reading mysteries, especially those by Agatha Christie and Rita Mae Brown. She enjoyed working puzzles, both word and picture, and was a whiz at Free Cell Because her family and friends were very important to her, she enjoyed family gatherings, IU reunions with friends from Foster Quad, and monthly lunches with her high school friends, the '66 Chicks. Although she had traveled the world, her favorite destination was Maine where she could visit lighthouses and listen to the waves crash on the rocks.

Carol is survived by her siblings, Richard (Jo) Schmitt, Martha (Steve) King, and David Schmitt, all of La Porte; daughter Brooke (Marizio) Manetti and grandson Serafino Manetti of California; and her beloved nieces and nephews, Rachel (Doug) Weasner, Ashley Schmitt, Sam (Claire) King and great niece Jordan King, Alex Schmitt, and Andrew Schmitt.
