Ronald "Wayne" Loeffler

Ronald "Wayne" Loeffler, 82, of La Porte, IN, passed away on Friday, March 20, 2026.

Wayne was born on September 2, 1943, in La Porte, IN, to Walter and Virginia (Sobko) Loeffler.

On May 28, 1966, in La Porte, IN, he married the love of his life, Mary Jane Hilgendorf. They shared a lifetime of memories until her passing on April 27, 2025. Their love was steady, enduring, and a foundation for the family they built together.

Wayne was known for his strong will and his unmistakable sense of humor. He was, by all accounts, a proud and stubborn man-usually convinced he was right (and, to be fair, often was). He had a quick wit and a way of saying things exactly how he saw them, whether you were ready to hear it or not. His humor, honesty, and larger-than-life personality made him someone you'll never forget.

He was an avid sports fan who rarely missed a chance to watch Notre Dame football or cheer on the Chicago Cubs, sticking with them through the good seasons and the not-so-good ones. When he wasn't watching a game, Wayne could often be found outside, working in his yard, tending to his garden, woodworking in his shop, or enjoying a round of golf.

Wayne will be remembered for his strength, his work ethic, his witty personality, and the laughter he brought to those around him. He loved deeply, lived fully, and left behind a family who will miss him more than words can say.

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte. Burial, with his beloved wife, will take place at a later date.

Carol Elaine Parmley

Carol Elaine Parmley, age 94, formerly of La Porte and most recently of Rochester, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 20, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on November 18, 1931, in Hammond, Indiana, Carol was the cherished daughter of the late Floyd L. Mills and Youthel (Jones) Mills. On February 15, 1948, she married the love of her life, Raymond Parmley, with whom she shared a lifetime of devotion until his passing in 1996.
Carol lived a life defined by love—love for her family, her faith, and especially for animals. A devoted animal lover, she owned and operated her own business, Carol’s Poodle Trim and Boarding, on the outskirts of LaPorte. Her home and heart were always full, at one time caring for as many as 42 dogs, most of them beloved poodles and schnauzers. Her compassion extended to all creatures, from parrots to spider monkeys, reflecting a spirit that delighted in nurturing life in all its forms.
She and her husband shared a love of travel, spending cherished time in Florida, particularly in Fort Myers, where they created many lasting memories together.
Over the years, Carol made her home in Gary, La Porte, Fort Myers, and eventually Rochester, where she lived near her daughter. Wherever she resided, she carried with her a steadfast faith, being a devoted member of the Church of God in both Michigan City and Rochester.
Carol was a woman of creativity and quiet industry. She found joy in crocheting baby blankets, knitting, quilting, and crafting beautiful keepsakes. She kept her mind sharp with word searches and her heart content by tending to birds and surrounding herself with plants, especially in later years when she could no longer garden outdoors. She also had a distinct sense of style, always presenting herself with grace and care—an elegance that left a lasting impression on those who knew her.
To her family, she was a constant source of love, wisdom, and comfort. Her granddaughter lovingly recalled: “Today we said goodbye to my grandma at 94. She was my last living grandparent and a constant in my life. She lived next door to me from when I was 4, and my childhood is filled with memories of her hosting family dinners, little visits, and always knowing she was right there. She spent many years vacationing with my parents and me.
Before she moved next door, she lived in Ft. Myers, and we would visit often.  Even then, she and my grandpa made sure I felt their love every day by sending me a postcard every SINGLE day. I remember how excited I would be to run to the mailbox, just knowing something from them would be waiting for me.
My grandma was a woman of deep faith, full of wisdom and love for the Lord. It showed in everything she did. She was incredibly creative, making beautiful things from shells, crocheting blankets, and spending hours tending her flower beds and feeding the birds. When her health no longer allowed her to be outside, she filled her home with plants and took such pride in caring for them.
She was also so stylish, always being put together, everything matching perfectly. It’s something I’ve always admired about her and tried to carry with me over the years.
It feels so fitting that she went to be with the Lord on the first day of spring, on such a warm, beautiful, sunny day. I will miss her deeply, but I am so thankful for every memory, every lesson, and every moment I was blessed to have with her.”
Carol’s legacy of love lives on in her family. She is survived by her four children: Terry Parmley (Penny), Wayne Parmley (Jenny), Randy Parmley (Marilee), and Sue Trigg (the late Don); her sisters-in-law, Carol Hathaway and Margaret Mills; ten grandchildren, Trevor Parmley, Jeremy Parmley (Heather), Jason Parmley (Samantha), Tracy Parmley, Tony Parmley (Chantel), Angel Hartford (the late Adam), Jeremy Wilson, Ashlee Kline (Alex), Mike Trigg (Jen) and Jason Trigg; thirty-four great-grandchildren; fifteen great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Raymond, her brother, Gene Mills; her sister, Marlene Watson; her granddaughter, Crystal Parmley; her grandson, Chris Trigg; and her great-grandson, Zach Trigg.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, with visitation from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will immediately follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

William "Cookie" L. Cook

William L. Cook, age 67, affectionately known as “Cookie” to his friends, a lifelong La Porte resident known for his quick wit, unmistakable humor, and fiercely loyal heart, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, hard work, and deep devotion to family. Born on February 3, 1959, in La Porte, Indiana, he was the beloved son of the late Frank H. Cook and Audrey M. (Crawford) Cook.

Cookie attended La Porte High School and built a life defined by grit, humor, and authenticity. In 1984, he married the love of his life, Georgean G. Harvey, beginning a partnership that spanned more than forty years and was filled with unwavering love and shared memories.

To those who knew him best, Cookie was unmistakably himself—down-to-earth, straightforward, and never one to sugarcoat his opinions. He could be ornery and comical in the same breath, a consummate jokester and proud smart aleck whose humor could fill a room. Yet beneath his teasing nature was a deeply kind, loving, and caring man who cherished his family above all else.

A true jack-of-all-trades, Cookie possessed a remarkable work ethic. He worked for over sixteen years at the American Rubber Company until its closure, and later, he dedicated more than thirty years to property maintenance at Deerfield Estates south of La Porte. Whether fixing engines, repairing a home, or helping a neighbor, Cookie had the skill and determination to get the job done.

He took immense pride in teaching his sons not only how to work on diesel engines and repair their own cars, but also how to hunt, fish, and carry themselves with strength and independence. To them, he was more than a father—he was their hero.

Cookie had a lifelong passion for powerful engines and the thrill of speed. He was an avid fan of NHRA drag racing and loved watching the roar of the cars and the precision of the sport. That same appreciation for engines and mechanics carried into his own life, where he spent countless hours working on vehicles and sharing that knowledge with his sons.

He also found great joy in the open road and loved riding his Harley-Davidson whenever he had the chance, especially his beloved Ultra Classic with its sidecar. He was a proud member of the Fish Lake American Legion Post 400.

In addition to his love for family and friends, Cookie had a special place in his heart for his dogs. Over the years, they were constant companions and loyal friends, each holding a special place in his life.

(Harvey) Cook; his sons, Jesse Cook (Amber) and Roscoe Cook; brothers, David Cook and Robert Cook (Carla); sister, Cati Cook Ault (David); and nine cherished grandchildren, Brody J. Cook, Bristol M. Cook, Kenslee A. Cook, Giovanni M. Cook-Lazzaro, Genevicia A. Cook-Lazzaro, Gabriella A. Cook-Lazzaro, Gemma Cook-Lazzaro, Giuseppe T. Cook-Lazzaro, and Gianna N. Cook-Lazzaro. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will remember him for his humor, honesty, and generous spirit.

Though Cookie may have loved a good joke and a bit of mischief, the love he gave his family, the lessons he shared, and the laughter he left behind will endure for generations—just as strong and steady as the engines he taught his sons to rebuild.

Gene K. Alber

Gene K. Alber, 82, of La Porte, Indiana, transitioned to his Lord and Savior on Friday, March 13, 2026, at Northwest Health La Porte.

A Celebration of Life Service with Military Honors will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

A time of visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home. Cremation will take place following the service, with burial at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.

Gene was born in Logansport, Indiana, on March 2, 1944, to the late Leo Alber and Ethel Alber née Parmeter.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his grandmother, Mollie Alber; mother of his children, Mary Alber née Stanton; sister, Marion "Lou" Beale née Alber; brother-in-law, John Beale; in-laws, Richard D. and Mildred Stanton née Tobin; cousin, Wes Parmeter; and faithful companion, SharkieLiz.

Gene began a long, dutiful career by serving his country for three years as a U.S. Army soldier with the 24th Infantry Division stationed in West Germany in the 1960s. After an honorable discharge as an E-5 Sergeant, he completed a master's degree in secondary education from Indiana State University before becoming a teacher, coach, athletic director, and assistant principal at Rogers High School.

Gene firmly believed in the power of education, a value he passed on to and nurtured in his children and grandchildren. His career later took him to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and San Antonio, Texas, two cities that remained dear to his heart because of the many friends he made there. After many years away, Gene returned to his native Indiana for his "retirement", which for him meant continuing to work as a substitute teacher for the La Porte school system.

Along with his unimpeachable work ethic and his love of knowledge, Gene was a man who marched to the beat of his own drum. Anyone who had "Mr. A" in class knew that he loved sharks and that he wouldn't stand for any nonsense - even if he were the first person to help and encourage a student who needed him. Gene always had the latest Stephen King novel, was ready to leave for a cross-country road trip at the drop of a hat, and had a deep passion for Lake Michigan, forcing his grandchildren to follow him out onto the beach at Washington Park every year, even in freezing conditions. He loved his family, his God, his yellow lab, SharkieLiz, and his life. Gene leaves us with his three rules that he always taught his students: Be nice. Do what is right. Do your best. He will be deeply missed.

Gene is survived by two children, Tracy (David) Jakel of Michigan City and Christopher (Gina) Alber PhD of La Porte; three grandchildren, Maverick (Selim) Blanton of Lille, France, Alexa (Giovanni) Blanton of Rome, Italy, and Chase Alber of La Porte; great-granddaughter, Eleonora Vassallo of Rome, Italy; nieces, Pam (Bill) Mickler of Lafayette, Kris (David) Downey of Lafayette, and Lisa (Ed) Beale of Indianapolis; nephew, Tom (Leana) Beale of Somerset, South Africa; and countless beloved family members and friends.
