Mary "Dee" Hunt

Mary Dolores Hunt (Dolores Haller), 87, of Union Mills, Indiana passed away peacefully on Friday evening, January 27th, 2023. Known fondly to many as “Dee”, she was born on February 21st, 1935, in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

 

On June 6th, 1953, Dolores Haller married Richard Neil Hunt in her hometown of Roseville, Michigan. Together the couple are survived by their four children: Sandra Christine Gorny (Edward) of Juno Beach, FL; Richard Clyde Hunt of Colorado Springs, CO; Vicky Dee Dereka (Tony) of Valparaiso, IN; and Cynthia Lucille Rix (Scott) of Chattanooga, TN. Also survived by younger sister, Thelma Grisham of Surprise, Arizona.

 

Dee’s passion for serving the Lord was evident in every aspect of her life, personally and professionally. Dee enjoyed a successful career as Senior Vice President at Senior Lifestyle (Michigan Avenue, Chicago), while also serving the Lord in a variety of roles in her church, community and amongst her Senior Lifestyle residents. Also known as “Aunt Dee,” she was often found in her kitchen preparing a Sunday roast dinner to be shared with family and friends, always trademarked with her famous homemade cinnamon rolls and chocolate chip cookies.

 

Her legacy lives on not only through her children but also her beloved grandchildren (Chris Gorny, Jeff Gorny; Jamie DiGiacomo, Katie Hein, Jonathan Hunt; Craig Dereka, Natalie Dereka, Jimmy Dereka; Lauren Rix, Kyle Rix, Josie Rix), fifteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

The visitation for Mary Dolores Hunt will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 11th, 2023, at Cutler Funeral Home, followed with a Celebration of Life Service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Private burial will take place at the Union Mills Cemetery where she will rest in peace beside her beloved husband of 59 years, Richard.

 

As a reflection of Dee’s love for life and those around her, John 10:10 reads, “…I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fullest.”

Mark Young

Mark J. Young, 87, passed away on Sunday, January 29th, 2023 at Rittenhouse Senior Living Center.

 

Mark was born on April 7th, 1935 in Los Angeles, CA, to Francis and Edith (Heinz) Young.

 

On September 22nd, 1963 in Hammond, IN, he married Joan Larson who preceded him in death.  Surviving Mark are his sons, Bill (Michelle) Young of Trail Creek and Dan (Carol) Young of Bloomington; grandchildren, Joel (Brianna) Young of Martinsville and Erin Young of Bloomington; and 2 great-grandchildren, Collin and Amelia.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sister, Vicky Platis.

 

Mark was a salesperson for many years at Sears Roebuck.  He enjoyed biking, fishing, and antiques.  Mark will be fondly remembered as never meeting a stranger.  He was known to take his time to hear and learn about the lives of others.  Mark was a treasure to have as a father and friend.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Steven Lawrence

Steven Mitchell Lawrence, 59, passed away on Sunday, January 29th, 2023.

 

Steven was born on March 29th, 1963 in Gary, IN, to Hobert and Clara (Mae) Lawrence.

 

On September 8th, 2007 in Michigan City, he married Stacy Jo Galloway, who survives.  Also surviving are his parents; 2 brothers, Robert and Alan (Joleen) Lawrence; as well as a few nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Megan Lawrence-Tidey.

 

Steven was a proud veteran of the United States Army.

 

Steven worked as a truck driver.  He was an avid hunter and enjoyed riding his Harley, listening to music and being with his friends. 

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.  A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will take place at a later date.

Elisa Leanor Dorsett

Elisa Leanor (Solis) Dorsett, 96, of Kingsford Heights, Indiana, passed away on January 27th, 2023, at Miller's Health and Rehab Nursing Home, La Porte, Indiana, surrounded by family.

 

Born on November 6th, 1926, in Brownsville, Texas, Elisa was the daughter of the late Julian  F. Solis and Refugia (Martinez) Solis.

 

On February 11th, 1944, in Brownsville, Texas, she married Henry (Poncho) Dorsett. Elisa, Henry and their first born Maria de Lourdes moved from Texas to Indiana in 1946 settling in Kingsford Heights.

 

Elisa is preceded in death by her husband, Henry of 50 years of marriage in 1994. Elisa is also preceded in death by her brothers, Ernesto Solis of Brownsville, Texas KIA in World War II and Julian M. Solis of Brownsville, Texas; daughter, Elizabeth (Dorsett) Ackerson of Kingsford Heights, Indiana; son-in-law, John W. O'Quinn of Beaufort, South Carolina; and great grandson, Skyler Joseph Kliene of La Porte, Indiana.

 

Elisa is survived by her three daughters, Maria "Mary" O'Quinn of La Porte, Indiana; Ella Dorsett of Kingsford Heights, Indiana; Diane Dorsett (Mark) Kendall of La Porte, Indiana; her two sons; Henry (Yvonne) Dorsett of Spotsylvania, Virginia and Jeffrey Dorsett of La Porte, Indiana; as well as 14 grandchildren Jon Baldwin of La Porte, Indiana, Kari Baldwin of Bluffton, South Carolina, Devony Arvin of Kingsford Heights, Indiana, Katherine (Scott) Bennett of Atlanta, Georgia, Karen (Andrew) Murphy of Rockville, Maryland, Jason Crum of Jacksonville, Florida, Nichole (Christopher) Krueger of Newport News, Virginia, Scott (Lindsey) Kendall of Warren, Michigan, Michael Kendall of Chicago, Illinois, Justin Nutter of Michigan City, Indiana, Jamison (Kayt) Dorsett of Mishawaka, Indiana, Jennifer Samm of La Porte, Indiana, Jeffrey (Shannon) Girard of Kingsford Heights, Indiana, and Julian (Andoreni) Dorsett of Chicago, Illinois; as well as 15 great grandchildren; Misty (Francisco) Acevedo, Connor Murphy, Brendan Murphy, Jayden Crum, Victoria Crum, Breanna Crum, Esme' Krueger, Jasper Krueger, Trent Samm, Caleb Girard, Emily Girard, Morgan Maynard, Gabriel Dorsett, Clare Dorsett, Anthony Dorsett, and 1 great-great granddaughter Elisa Marie Acevedo. She is also survived by special sister-in-law Esther Solis and niece, Sylvia (John) Glass and nephew Richard (Penny) Solis.

 

A loving mother and devoted wife Elisa spent much of her life raising her six children, as well as helping with her grandchildren. She loved to make home cooked meals and her special tortillas in which she was known for in the neighborhood - hand made, tossed on the stove top grill with butter and coffee or cocoa. Her family loved her "soupy spaghetti and homemade rice and beans" and many more homemade dishes. There was a period that she volunteered at the Kingsford Heights Community Center to assist in serving meals to the community, in which she enjoyed. She loved to go on long country drives with our father and her children to the movies. She loved to shop for hours and to attend church, dance with her friends and watch her White Sox, Cubbies, Tigers, Notre Dame, CNN, MSNBC and Spanish Soaps. She also loved to embroider, patch clothing and read. Mom was very dedicated to her Catholic faith.

 

Elisa wishes were to be laid to rest in the Spring. Arrangements for this Spring Service, Celebration of Life and private Family Burial will be announced at a later date.

Jude Meehan

Jude Martin Meehan, 63, passed away on Sunday, January 29th, 2023 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

 

Jude was born on September 13th, 1959 in Chicago, IL, to Bernard and Bridget (Kennedy) Meehan.

 

On June 4th, 2005 in Rolling Prairie, IN, he married his best friend, Nancy L. Lawrence Brinkman, who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Heather (Keith) Jonas-Berry, Meghan Meehan, and Jonathon Meehan; 2 grandchildren, Allie and Jacob Berry; brother, Dismas "Diz" (Brenda) Meehan; and nephew, Daniel Meehan.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Jude was a maintenance manager for many years, providing maintenance to the Beachwalk vacation homes.  He enjoyed helping people by fixing things and loved his animals, especially his dogs, Lexi and Amora.  Jude loved going out to dinner and spending time with his wife of 23 years, Nancy, and his family.  He will be fondly remembered as a good friend, a great husband, and for his love of chocolate candy, mint chocolate ice cream, and Squirt soda.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Jettie Goodman

Jettie Lee Goodman, 91, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 24th, 2023 at Brickyard Healthcare in Valparaiso, IN with family by her side.

 

She was born November 6th, 1931, in Salem, Arkansas, the daughter of J.T. Clanton and Hattie (Jones) Clanton.

 

In 1943, Jettie moved from Lake City, Arkansas to the La Porte area. On February 14th, 1948, in La Porte, she married Charles L. Goodman. Together they enjoyed traveling especially to their weekend home on the river. Jettie was a member of the La Porte Assembly of God. She had a passion for collecting rocks and found joy in mowing her lawn on her riding lawn mower and strolling through garage sales. She enjoyed listening to old country classics and enjoyed listening to Janis Joplin. She took great pride in her family and grandchildren. 

 

She is survived by her daughter, Anita Jackowicz of Hudson Lake, IN; son, Eric (Kathy Underwood) Goodman of La Porte, IN; brother Billy Joe (Diane) Clanton of Illinois; daughter-in-law Sandy Goodman of La Porte, IN; seventeen grandchildren, forty-one great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  

 

Jettie was preceded in death by her parents; sons, John Goodman and Charles Goodman; daughter, Diane Volk, and brothers, Wallace Clanton, Harold Clanton, Mack Clanton, and Clifton Clanton.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Tuesday, January 31st from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A life celebration will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, on Wednesday, February 1st at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jeff Hines, officiating.  Interment will follow at Rolling Prairie Cemetery in Rolling Prairie, Indiana. A lunch will be provided at the Assembly Church of God on Boyd boulevard after the burial.

Patrick C. Haas

Patrick C. Haas, 93, La Porte, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, January 25th, 2023 at 12:28 AM in VNA Hospice Center, Valparaiso, Indiana with loving family at his bed side.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 12:00 pm, Wednesday, February  1st, 2023 at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Buffalo & 10th Streets, Michigan City, Indiana with Rev. David Kime officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:45 AM - 12:00 PM, (Eulogy begins at 11:40 AM) on Wednesday, at the Church. Arrangements are being provided by the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, Indiana.

John "Jack" Orlowski

John Francis "Jack" Orlowski, age 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home the morning of January 24th, 2023.

 

He was a lifelong resident of Michigan City and was born with a twin sister Joan on July 3rd, 1932. Which as he would remind you was also George M. Cohan's birthday and he would then sing the Yankee Doodle Dandy lyric. Jack was second to the youngest child in a large depression era family of 9 and delivered  newspapers every day while he attended St Mary's grade school and then graduated from St Mary's High School in 1950. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1952. But before his enlistment began, was drafted into the U.S. Army. Due to a significant twist of fate during basic training exams at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri, he ended up stationed in La Rochelle France during the Korean War.

 

He had many fine stories and pictures to share of his travels in Europe. After being honorably discharged, he returned home and met the love of his life, Karen Mae Wolf who became his bride on April 14th, 1956. They wasted no time in having children and by July of 1961, they were blessed with five, namely, Dan, Kathy, Tom, Mary, and Tim.
 
Jack was a Michigan City Firefighter for 25 years and fought some of the city's worst fires. He had a strong work ethic and always had a part time job to support his family. In the 1970's it was at Sanlo industry on the shipping dock and then Dr Bankoff's Lab. 

 

After his retirement from the fire department, he worked in maintenance at St Anthony hospital for 19 years. He was the best hospital bed repairman they ever had. Jack was the steady hand in a storm and was always a man you could rely upon. He was an avid White Sox and Packers fan. He liked to bowl. He won the ABC bowling League championship title in 1993 and collected many high game awards with his left handed bowling balls.

 

Dad enjoyed a long and joyful retirement where he and mom became more active in their Faith. They enjoyed so very many fun and memorable days being with and loving their family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren. In his last years of life, he often remarked how blessed he was, how blessed his whole family was, to have lived this journey of a life with such a loving family, truly a gift from God.

 

Jack is survived by his five children: Daniel (Debbie) Orlowski; Kathryn (Bob) Marion; Thomas Orlowski: Mary Dornbrock; and Timothy (Mary Jo) Orlowski. 13 grandchildren: Andrew Orlowski, Jennifer Speary, and Tracey Orlowski: Matthew and Evan Pabis: Grace, Jacob, Hannah and Caspian Orlowski; Kate Gonzalez; Vincent, Alexander, and Celeste Orlowski. He is also survived by 14 great grandchildren: Adam and Sophie Orlowski: Lucas and Violet Frazer, Caden Gonzalez : Ian, Lillian, Charlotte, and Jackson Orlowski; Arabella, Oliver, and Verena Pabis; Otto Eli and Myah Rose.

 

Proceeding him in death were his wife Karen: his parents, Mary (Drewes) and Adam Orlowski; Siblings Eugene "Bud" Orlowski, Eulalia "Lolly" Kazmucha, Deloris Whitaker, Lois Daniel, Joan Siegel, and Jerry Orlowski; granddaughter Lydia Orlowski and grandson Dominic Dornbrock.  

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, January 30th, 2023 at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN with  Pastor William Fine officiating. Burial will follow in Saint Stanislaus Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Sunday and from 9:00 am - 10:00 am Monday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.

Julia I. Lisak

Julia I. Lisak, 91, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, January 25th, 2023 at 5:06 am in her home.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 pm, Tuesday, January 31st, 2023 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Buffalo & 10th Streets, Michigan City, Indiana with Reverand Sean Danda officiating. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9:30 am - 11:30 am, Tuesday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN.    

 

She was born January 4th, 1932 in Michigan City, IN. On February 7th, 1953 in Chesterton, IN she married Henry Lisak who preceded her on June 13th, 2014.

 

Surviving are two sons, James (Lisa) Lisak of Muskego, WI and Michael (Janet) Lisak of Murfreesboro, TN; two daughters, Susan Grattenthaler of Michigan City, IN and Katherine (Richard) Danda of Brownsburg, IN; five grandchildren, Rev. Sean  Danda, Sis. Heather Danda, George  Grattenthaler, IV, Lauren Lisak and Sam Lisak; two great-grandchildren, Evelyn Grattenthaler and Caroline Blue; sister, Carol (Gene) Tylisz of Michigan City, IN; and brother, Tom Lipinski of Westville, IN.

 

She was preceded in death by her father, William Janowski; mother, Jane Lipinski; and step-father, Adolph Lipinski.   

 

Julia retired as a bookkeeper at Pioneer Lumber Co. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Saint Mary's Rosary Sodality and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and R.S.V.P.

Gordon Westergren

Gordon Lewis Westergren, 91, of La Porte, passed away on Wednesday, January 25th, 2023 at Northwest Health - La Porte.

 

Gordon was born on May 26th, 1931 in Chicago, IL.

 

On February 14th, 1955 he married Patricia Helmick, who preceded him in death in 2005.  Later on June 30th, 2006, he married Eunice Marlene Wolfe who preceded him in death in 2021.  Surviving Gordon are his children, Louis (Kelly) Boswell of Richland, MI, Jeffrey (Vickie) Westergren of Yoakum, TX, Eric (Ronda) Westergren of Lake Charles, LA, and Kristen (Tom) Westergren of Kalamazoo, MI; stepchildren, Jody (Dwight) Ames of Union Mills, Michelle (Matthew) Rozinski, Steven (Jeanne) Osborn, Thomas (April) Osborn II, and David Osborn, all of La Porte; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many step-grandchildren and great step-grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and wives.

 

Gordon was a proud veteran of the United States Army.

 

Gordon was an electrical engineer and traveled the world through his work.  He loved sports, particularly the Valparaiso University Crusaders, where he graduated.  Gordon also enjoyed golfing and collecting stamps.  He was a supporter of Habitat for Humanity.  Gordon was an avid NRA member.

 

A Celebration of Life Service with Military Honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3rd, 2023 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Dennis Meyer officiating.  Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 2nd, 2023 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.

John Francis "Jack" Orlowski, age 90, passed away peacefully in his

Samantha Carrie Angeledes, 53, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Tuesday, January 24th, 2023.

 

Samantha was born February 13th, 1969, in La Porte, Indiana to Charles and Donna (Minix) Wood.

 

Samantha is survived by her children, Courtney ( Dominik) Jedrysek of La Porte, Indiana, Dana Angeledes of La Porte, Indiana, Nicholle Angeledes-Jones of La Porte, Indiana, Peyton Clemons of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jessica Bailey of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Wyatt Hon of La Porte, Indiana; nine grandchildren; a sister, Shonna Wood of Rensselaer, Indiana; brothers, Doug (Rabecca) Wood of New Braunfels, Texas, Charles (Tricia) Wood of Lowell, Indiana, Mike (Rachelle) Wood of Florida, and Nolan Wood of North Dakota; her companion, Jeff Angeledes; her mother, Donna Wood of Knox, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Wood.

Robert Lee Howell

Robert "Lee" Howell, 84, of La Porte, passed away on Tuesday, January 24th, 2023, at Northwest Health - La Porte.

 

Lee was born on September 13th, 1938, in La Porte, IN, to Samuel Descum and Jean Mae (Lee) Howell.

 

On June 24th, 1961 at St. John's Lutheran Church, La Porte, he married Suzanne "Sue"  Marie Schultz, who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Jeff (Tana) Howell of Columbia City and Brenda (Greg) Cooper of La Porte; 6 grandchildren, Scott Cooper of Grand Rapids, MI, Kara Cooper of La Porte, Jordan Howell of Columbia City, Alexandra Howell of Columbia City, Katie Howell of Columbia City, and Alyssa Rigdon of Fairmount; numerous great grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lloyd Howell.

 

Lee was a dairy farmer for many years.  Additionally, he worked with Allis-Chalmers experimental division.  Ultimately, he retired as a custodian from La Porte Community School Corporation.  Lee was a collector and member of the International Harvester Collectors Club 33, where he served on the Board of Directors.

 

In his youth, Lee was a La Porte County 4-H member.  When his son and daughter were of age to join, Lee became a 4-H parent.  He gave back to the community by also participating as a La Porte County 4-H leader.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 27th, 2023 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Rev. Dr. Kendall “Ken” Schaeffer officiating.  Burial will follow at Patton Cemetery.

John Mackey

John Mackey, 92, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, passed away Wednesday January 18th, 2023 at Miller's Merry Manor in Portage, IN.

 

He was born February 21st, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of William Mackey and Yvonne (Tataryn) Mackey.

 

On June 4th, 1955, in Chicago, John married Maryan Mackowiak. Together they enjoyed water skiing, bowling, motorcycle riding and raising 5 children. They moved to this area 20 years ago from Alsip, IL. John, who was a baptized and confirmed catholic, worked as a truck driver for most of his career, taking some time in between to open Johnny's Auto Repair and try his hand as a mechanic. He was a Teamster and retired from Preston Trucking 151. John was a member of the Lions Club of Alsip, loved playing cards and enjoyed fishing and playing pool.

 

He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Maryan; son, Jay (Janessa) Mackey of Michigan City, IN; four daughters, Debra Fumi of Naples, FL; Jo-Ann (Dan) Mott of Peotone, IL, Maryan "Missy" Daley of Haysville, KS, Patricia (Joseph) McGuire of New Lennox, IL; seven grandchildren, Justin, Brandon, Eddie, Michael, Lindsey, Kaitlyn, Meghan and 5 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William and Patrick Mackey.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, LaPorte, IN. Cremation will take place. No services are planned at this time.

Lawrence Gattorna

Lawrence Gattorna, 91, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Thursday, January 19th,  2023.

 

Lawrence was born May 13th, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois to the late Lawrence and Marguerite (Bach) Gattorna.

 

On August 20th, 1983, Lawrence married Alberta (Sappenfield) Alexander who survives along with their children, John (Lori) Gattorna of Morton Grove, Illinois, Steven (Pam) Gattorna of Arlington, Texas, John (Maureen) Alexander of Granger, Indiana, Faith (Brad) Faus of Walkerton, Indiana, Mark Alexander of South Bend, Indiana; 14 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; a sister, Marylyn Salmi of Florida; and a brother, Jerry (Chistine) Gattorna of North Las Vegas, Nevada. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenny Gattorna. 

 

Lawrence was a District Service Manager with General Motors Cadillac car division. He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Saint Peter Church, past president and secretary of the Maple City Lions Club, and served his country as a proud Marine. He was also very proud of his Italian heritage. 

 

The family thanks Jan, their special angel, and all the doctors and nurses who gave him care. 

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 13th, 2023, at Holy Family Parish, Saint Peter Church, 1101 Michigan Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. Family and friends may visit from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Saint Peter Church prior to the Mass. 

 

Burial will follow at Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in La Porte.

Carolyn Libich

Carolyn Jane Libich, 94, of La Porte, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at VNA Hospice Center.

 

Carolyn was born on June 18, 1928 in Gary, IN to the late Herschel and Rosalind (Pinner) Harbison.

 

On January 21,1967 in Gary, IN, she married Charles Edward, who survives.  Together, she and Charles enjoyed almost 56 years of marriage. Also surviving are her son, David (Andrea) Libich of La Porte; nieces, Janet (Mike) Landrum of South Carolina and Mary (Rich) Kral; and beloved Chihuahua, Peppy.                         

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Lynette; brother, Herschel Harbison, Jr.; sister, Dorothy Norman; and special dog, Dingo.

 

For many years, Carolyn worked in the office at US Steel.  She enjoyed eating out, playing pinochle, and working out at the YMCA.  Carolyn will be fondly remembered as never meeting a stranger.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ashley Smithman

Ashley Irene Smithman, 35, of Kingsford Heights, Indiana passed away Monday, January 16th, 2023. She was born on May 18th, 1987 in Valparaiso, Indiana to the late James G. Jones and Connie Ditto of Crawfordsville, Indiana. 

 

Ashley married Michael Smithman in September of 2014. He survives with their boys, Kaidyn, Kevin, and Adam Smithman all at home. Her boys meant the world to her and kept her going. 

 

She is also survived by her mother, Connie Ditto; a brother, Adam Jones of La Porte; Nichole Jones; maternal grandparents, Esther (Richard) Wright of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and David (Janice) Ditto of Avon, Indiana; and a niece, MaKenzyi (chicka) Jones. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, James L. and Lorraine Jones. 

 

Ashley was tough as nails but had a heart of gold. She defeated cancer and battled with MS. She was a protector and devoted her life to her family and friends and loved everyone! She had a very bold, unique yet absolutely beautiful spirit. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed and thought about everyday.  We Love You!

 

A celebration of life will be held from 1-3 p.m. Monday, January 23rd, 2023, at Frank L.Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana, where a service will follow at 3 pm. Pastor Bob Vale will officiate.

Alvena M. Stahl

Alvena M. Stahl, 86, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Monday, January 16th, 2023.

 

Alvena was born February 16th, 1936, on her family farm in Peru, Indiana to the late Truman and Eva (Shivley) Yoder.

 

On September 24th, 1954, in Denver, Indiana, Alvena married Noble G. Stahl who preceded her in death on August 25th, 2013. In 1967, she came here from Fort Recovery, Ohio. She worked for 21 years at Howmet in the wax and dimensional departments. She was a member of The Church of the Nazarene.


Alvena leaves behind three daughters, Judith (Casey) Arndt of La Porte, Indiana, Patricia Stahl of La Porte, Indiana, and JoAnn (Brian) Griffin of Grand Haven, Michigan; three sons, James (Cheri) Stahl of La Porte, Indiana, Thomas (Alison) Stahl of Littleton, Colorado, and Michael (Diane), of Manhattan, New York; grandchildren, Matthew, Melissa, Maggie, Ashley, Michael, Nicole, and Nathan Stahl, Christopher and Alexander Thompson; great grandchildren; Deacon Stahl, and Lily Grantham; a sister, Donna L. (Robert) Myers of Tipton, Indiana; and a brother, Bill (Sue) Yoder of Denver, Indiana.

 

She was preceded in death by sisters, Ruth Chagnon and M. Joan Fitzgerald; and brothers, George, Vic, Paul, Jack, and John Yoder.

 

Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m., Friday, January 20th, 2023, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. Funeral Service will begin at 11 a.m. following the visitation with Reverend Dan McDonald officiating.

Charles Stout

Charles "Charlie" Alvin Stout, 77, passed away on Tuesday, January 17th, 2023 at Brickyard Healthcare- Terrace Care Center.

 

Charlie was born on October 16th, 1945 in Crane, IN, to Dennis and Glady (Walters) Stout.

 

On October 5th, 1996 in Mitchell, IN, he married Mary Ann McMeans who survives.  Also surviving are his sister, Betty Jean Scott of Bedford, IN; and special nieces and nephews, Thomas Stout of Virginia Beach, VA, John and Carrie Bergmann of Mitchell, IN, and Robin, Barbara Jean, and Allie of French Lick, IN.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Allie Stout; sister, Alice Stout; and brother, Earl Dennis Stout.

 

Charlie proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War Era.

 

He was a RV Transporter for many years.  Charlie enjoyed completing puzzles and traveling.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Therese A. Wing, 92, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Monday, January 16th, 2023 at 3:30 am in Valparaiso, Indiana.


Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, January 20th, 2023 at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, 606 S. Woodland Ave., Michigan City, Indiana with  Rev. David Kime officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City, Indiana.  Visitation will be Friday  from 10:00 am -11:00 am, in the Queen of all Saints Catholic Church Legacy Center.  Arrangements are being handled by the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, Indiana.

 

She was born November 14th, 1930 in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Edward C. and Magdalene "Lena"(Wagner) Timm. On April 19, 1952 in Michigan City, Indiana she married William L. Wing who preceded her in death on December 1st, 2018.  Surviving are four daughters, Kathleen (Craig) Enos and Christine (Larry) Kintzele both of La Porte, Indiana, Susan (Mark) Przybylinski of Michigan City, Indiana, Nancy (William) Voris of Lombard, Illinois; son, Timothy (Deborah) Wing of Watkinsville, Georgia; 11 grandchildren, Nicholas Simpson, Hollie Arruda, Amy (Tim) Baker, Eric (Stephanie) Ogle, Mandy (Chris) Buresh,  Angie (Brian) Claeys, Aaron (Kristin) Przybylinski, Krista (Spencer) Kirk, Jacob Voris, Clayton (Casey) Wing, and Davis Wing; 13 grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Timm, Jerome J. Timm, DDS; sister, Margaret "Peggy" Rathnow;

 

Therese was a member of Queen of all Saint's Catholic Church, former member of the Women of the Moose 935 Auxiliary.  She enjoyed camping and reading.  She had previously served as a medical assistant for Dr. Charles Hillenbrand and also had worked as an account clerk for many years at the former Memorial Hospital, St. Anthony Hospital and The Arbors (Aperion Care).

Jane "Andee" Lovin

Jane "Andee" Lovin, 72, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Thursday, December 29th, 2022 at 3:34 am in Life Care Center of Michigan City, Michigan City, Indiana.

She was born February 8th, 1950 in Phoenix, Arizona to the late Michael and Margaret (Walsh) Weiner. On  September 3rd, 2004 in Michigan City, Indiana she married Thomas A. Plikuhn who preceded her in death on September 15, 2006.  Surviving are three sons, Sean (Exie) Enna, David (Laura) Plikuhn, Eric (Mari) Plikuhn; daughter, Karen A. (Daniel) Hurt; nine grandchildren, Abrahm, Ethan and Ezra Hurt, Evan, Gracie, and Elizabeth Plikuhn, Christian (Laural) Leeming, Timothy, and Grace Silva; great-grandchild, Rhea Leeming; daughter-in-law, Audra Plikuhn along with brother, Robert Clauss; She was preceded in death by a son, Christopher T. Plikuhn.

Patricia Parrett

Patricia Ann Parrett, 87, of New Carlisle, passed away on Thursday, January 12th, 2023 at Hamilton Communities.

 

Patricia was born on April 27th, 1935 in Louisville, KY, to John C. and Freda K. (Westerman) Ellaby.

 

On February 23, 1957 in First Baptist Church, Michigan City, IN, she married Gene Thomas Parrett, who preceded her in death.  Surviving Patricia are her beloved daughters, Gayle (Larry) Baugher of La Porte and Cyndi Wagner of Indianapolis; 2 grandsons, Matthew (Kelly) and Kevin Wagner; 2 step grandchildren, Jennifer (Kevin) Wall and Brett (Kristi) Baugher; 6 step great-grandchildren; 6 step great, great-grandchildren; sisters, Jean Erickson of CA, Jacqueline Benz of TX, and Judy (Tony) Koester of NJ; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

 

Patricia was a nurse for many years at Memorial Hospital, Coolspring Clinic, and I Street Clinic.  She was a longtime member of Galena Baptist Church, where enjoyed participating in church activities and was known to be there whenever the doors were open.  Patricia also enjoyed watching her family enjoy and show their horses.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 23rd, 2023 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Jason Baker officiating.  Burial will follow at Posey Chapel Cemetery.

Bruce Robert Brown

Bruce Brown, 64, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully Friday, January 13th, 2023, at Northwest Health - La Porte.

 

He was born October 16th, 1958, in Heidelberg, Germany, the son of the late Leroy Brown and Lila (Cavin) Brown.

 

Born in Heidelberg, Germany but raised within a US Army family primarily in Rockford, Illinois, Bruce graduated from Harlem High School. He later moved to La Porte, where he worked on the family cattle farm raising chickens and cows. He most recently worked as a truck driver for Ryder in South Bend, Indiana. Bruce found joy in cooking, gardening, and solving crossword puzzles; “always in pen, never in pencil.” He enjoyed listening to music and was an all-around Chicago sports fan. He loved nothing more than to spend time with family, especially his grandson Henry. Bruce was known for always cracking his “dad jokes” and tending to be "too nice for his own good."

 

He is survived by his mother, two daughters, Ashley (Brian) Clahan of New Carlisle, IN, Brooklyn Brown-Sater of New Carlisle, IN; two brothers, Keith "Yo" Brown of Rolling Prairie, IN, Jay (Susie) Brown of Pinckney, MI; three sisters, Margo Brown-Brinkmeier of Rockford, IL, Denise (Tom) Argyle of Rockford, IL, Cherie (Phil) Schwenk of La Porte, IN; grandchild, Henry Clahan; and eight nieces and nephews.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Friday, January 20, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm CST. A eulogy and prayer will be given at 7:00 pm CST. Cremation will take place.

Ginger L. Hammons

Ginger L. Hammons, 72, of Battle Creek, MI unexpectedly passed away on Saturday, January 7th, 2023, at her home.

 

Ginger was born on September 4th, 1950 in Oliver Springs, TN, to McKinley Ray Sr. and June (Smith) Hammons.

 

In 1969, shortly after their graduation, Ginger married her high school sweetheart and former husband, Danny Cavinder, Sr., who proceeded her in death.

 

Surviving Ginger are her children, Gretchen Lynn (Mark) Good-Smith of Hudsonville, MI and Danny (Jennifer) Cavinder Jr. of Battle Creek, MI; six grandchildren, Aaron, Joe, Michael, Danielle, Brianna and William; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Connie During of Kalamazoo, MI and Vickey (Thomas) Hullinger of New Haven, IN; three brothers, McKinley Ray Hammons Jr. of Marion, IN, Terry (Nancy) Hammons of Elkhart, IN, and Steve Hammons of La Porte; uncle, Freddy (Helen) Smith of Oliver Springs, TN; aunt, Carolyn Hammons Liles of Petros, TN; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as her dog, Gidgit, who was her longtime companion. 

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Randy Lynn Hammons; niece, Kimberly Sue Zimmerman; and ex-husband.

 

Until her retirement, Ginger held several positions as a Certified Nursing Assistant, floral delivery driver, auto parts factory worker, construction worker, and a balloon and novelty shop business owner.

 

She loved spending time with her family and having family cookouts.  Ginger also loved to sew, collect dolls, create crafts, color, draw, watch old movies, and collect tools.  During the years she owned the balloon and novelty shop, she enjoyed clowning as Ginger Snap.  Her creative talents were expressed through her clowning, costume rentals, and balloon art.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 21st, 2023, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Daniel Akins officiating.  Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20th, 2023, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Watson Kain Mansker, was stillborn on Friday, January 13, 2023, to his parents, Kasey (Tanksley) and Randy Mansker of La Porte. Surviving with his parents are siblings, Canaan, Rebekah, Josiah Mansker, and Skyler who preceded Watson in death; maternal grandmother, Iva Farlie of Michigan City; paternal grandparents, Doreen Mansker of Michigan City, and Marshall Mansker who preceded Watson in death; maternal great grandparents, Robin and Ron Farlie of La Porte; and paternal great grandparents, Talmadge Tanksley of Moulton, Alabama, and Ann Marie Macdonough, who preceded Watson in death.

Shirley Sater

Shirley A. Sater, 83, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Saturday, January 14, 2023. 

Shirley was born May 7th, 1939 to Jessie N. and Hazel E. (Dorst) VanBibber.

 

She was a homemaker and a member of the Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church.

 

Shirley married Nolan L. Sater who preceded her in death. She was also preceded by her son, Terry M. Sater; and siblings, Robert VanBibber, Mary McKinney, Clarence (Buzz) VanBibber, Flora Bialorucki, and Russell Dowler.

 

Shirley leaves behind a son, Randy, (Sandra) Sater of Bartlett, Illinois; a daughter, Kristin (Timothy) Black of La Porte, Indiana; a sister, Patricia Bennett of GulfPort, Mississippi; grandchildren, Kyle (Katie) Sater, Kendall (Eric) Niccum, Jaclyn Hunn (Ryan St. Antoine); great grandchildren, Nolan Niccum, Makenna Niccum, Logan Niccum, Lucy Sater, and Adam Sater; and her longtime boyfriend, Charles Tackett.

 

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 21st, 2023, at Frank L. Leroy L. Kloss, Jr.

Leroy L. Kloss, Jr., 62, of New Carlisle, passed away at 12:18 a.m., Tuesday, January 10th, 2023 at his home after a valiant battle with an alien called cancer.

 

He was born May 11th, 1960, in Michigan City, to Leroy Kloss Sr. and Rosemary (Kniola) Kloss.


Leroy had many interests; he loved his dogs and breeding his birds. Leroy collected stuffed and ceramic Tasmanian Devil and Grinch items. He was very involved in the LGBTQ community and was a roadie for “Welcome To The Other Side” adult entertainment group. Leroy was a master baker, loved hosting his annual birthday party, and his Sangria was gold-standard. He proudly served his country for 8 years as a E-5 Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and was also a conductor for South Shore Freight. Leroy had a loving, generous heart that he kept hidden behind an ornery, sarcastic exterior.  His sense of humor was always on tap but definitely not for the faint of heart or thin-skinned.

 

Surviving are his father, one sister, Theresa (John) Singleton of Dana, IN; and four brothers, Larry Kloss of Iowa, Daniel “Buno” (Sandy) Kloss of Michigan, Andrew (Karen) Kloss of Elkhart, and Mark (Mary) Kloss of Rolling Prairie; as well as a large number of extended family and devoted friends, many of whom called him simply “Uncle”.

 

He was preceded in death by his mother; and one brother, Mike Kloss.

Jim Cleaton

Jim “Sammy” H. Cleaton, 64, of Michigan City, Indiana passed away Monday, January 9th, 2023.

 

Jim was born February 24th, 1958 in Niles, Ohio to the late Richard and Gloria (Hughes) Cleaton.

 

Jim worked as an inspector at Bethlehem Steel (Arcelor Mittal-Cleveland Cliffs) retiring in 2018. He served his country in the United States Navy. Jim enjoyed playing darts in a league at Chappy’s Stadium Inn, fishing, and music.

 

Jim is survived by a daughter, Stephanie (Jeffrey) Williamson of Michigan City, Indiana; a son, Jonathan (Ariana) Cleaton of Valparaiso, Indiana; and four grandchildren, Izzy, Gabe, James, and Elaine. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Daffard Tanksley

Daffard Tanksley, 82, of Mill Creek, passed away on Saturday, January 7th, 2023 at Northwest Health - La Porte.

 

Daffard was born on June 25th, 1940 in Moulton, AL, to Price and Lucy (Chaney) Tanksley.

 

On May 23th, 1959 in North Liberty, IN, he married Carmalee Mullins, who preceded him in death.  Surviving Daffard are his children, Ken (Liz) Tanksley of Mill Creek, Steve (Beth) Tanksley of Falcon, CO, and Todd (Tracy) Tanksley of New Buffalo, MI; 9 grandchildren, Stephanie (Rrahul) Chohan of La Porte, Kylie (Matt) Hintz of La Porte, Christian (Breanna) Tanksley of Falcon, CO, Caleb (Brittany) Tanksley of Falcon, CO, Aaron Tanksley of Falcon, CO, and Ashley, Kelsey, Brenden, and Carlee Tanksley, all of New Buffalo, MI; 3 great-grandchildren, Mason, Emersyn, Elianna; siblings, Alfred Tanksley, Wanda Kinsey, Sarah Leach, Junior Tanksley, and Virginia Hohalek; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Price and Lucy Tanksley; wife, Carmalee Tanksley; and brothers, Waylon Tanksley, Alton Tanksley, and Irvin Tanksley.

 

Daffard was a truck driver for many years.  He enjoyed auctions, cutting wood, and working in his garden. Daffard enjoyed traveling to and visiting Colorado.

Ronald Kemiel

Ronald Florean Kemiel, 67, of La Porte, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 8th, 2023.

 

Ronald was born on July 24th, 1955 in La Porte, IN, to Florean and Ann A. (Tuszynski) Kemiel.

 

On July 9th, 1988  in La Porte, IN, he married Carla Huenecke who survives.  Also surviving are his children, Nathaniel (Kim) Kemiel of Rolling Prairie and Katrina (Matthew) Petsche of Indianapolis; a special soon to be granddaughter Kemiel; siblings, Norma Kemiel of La Porte, Phyllis Kemiel of Michigan City, and Richard (Mary Ann) Kemiel of La Porte; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Florean and Ann Kemiel, and brother-in-law, Walter Regeski.

 

Although Ronald's work career included working at Mitchell and Schoppel and H&P Sales and Service, his true passion was farming on the family farm.  He loved cheering on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and spoiling his beloved dog, Bailey, and grandpups, Fiona, Lola, and Edgar.  Ronald was a faithful member of the Catholic church.

 

Ronald will be fondly remembered for his infectious laugh and great sense of humor.  Above all, Ronald dearly loved his family.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 13th, 2023 at Sacred Heart Church with Father Ian Williams officiating.  Burial will follow at Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Joann "Jo" Mae Ludwig

Joann "Jo" Mae Ludwig, 73, of La Porte, passed away on Sunday, January 8th, 2023 at VNA Hospice Center, Valparaiso.

 

Jo was born on April 5th, 1949 in Michigan City, IN, to Herman Karl and Winnifred May (Knight) Wordelman.

 

On February 14th, 1970 in Michigan City, IN, she married Peter Ludwig, who preceded her in death.  Surviving are her beloved children, Lisa J. Tarnow and Peter D. Ludwig, both of La Porte and 4 grandsons, Justin S. King, Daniel J. Tarnow, Dwight D. Tarnow, and Paul A. Ludwig, all of La Porte.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and daughter, Tammi Lynn Alt. 

 

Jo worked as a paraprofessional for 26 years at Michigan City Area Schools, where she enjoyed working with children.  She retired in 2013.  Jo was a member of Great Faith Baptist Church, Merry Moderns Extension Club and the Springfield Homette Extension Club.  She loved animals, reading and collecting mice figurines.

Glen Burkett

Glen E. Burkett, 48, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Friday, December 30th, 2022, at Northwest Health - La Porte.

 

He was born April 17th, 1974, in Michigan City, Indiana.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, Glen was an active member of the Special Olympics,
participating on both the bowling and softball teams. He enjoyed WWE wrestling and was an avid White Sox fan. He spent his free time playing video games or out by the water fishing. Glen liked to shop and had a love for food.

 

He is survived by his guardian, Tara Payton (Jason) of La Porte, IN, and three friends Alexa von Rothe of Michigan City, IN, Shawn Goodwin of Walkerton, IN, and Brandon Feasel of La Porte, IN. A special thanks would like to be given to Glen's direct caregiver, Matt Propeck.

Jesse "Jess" William Sandy, Jr.

Jesse "Jess" William Sandy, Jr., 83, of Walkerton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 5th, 2023 at Miller's Merry Manor - Plymouth.

 

Jess was born on December 13th, 1939 in La Porte, IN, to Jesse William and Phyllis M. (Greening) Sandy.

 

On June 2nd, 1990 in La Porte, IN, he married Carol Ann Wingett.  Jess and Carol enjoyed traveling over 17 states as newlyweds.

 

Left to cherish the memory of Jess are his loving wife; children, Brenda Davis of TX, Teresa (Chris) Martin of UT,and Billy Sandy of TX; stepsons, Jerry Wingett of La Porte and Carl Brown of Elkhart; 7 grandchildren, Chris Jr., Masynne, Michael, Matthew, Robert, Amanda, and Angela; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Paula (Craig) Waltman of Rolling Prairie; special caregivers, Blanche and Diane; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Grant and Eric Sandy; granddaughter, Kayla Wingett; sisters, Ruth Ann Vanhook and Cathy Murell; and special furbaby, Jake.

 

After graduating from La Porte High School, Jess proudly enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps, where he honorably served for 22 years.  He completed two tours in Vietnam.  He dearly loved his country.

 

Jess was a landscaper for many years, owning his own landscaping company.  He also worked as a La Porte County Sheriff Dept. Deputy.  Jess loved landscaping, fishing, and attending church.

 

Jess was dearly loved and will be remembered by the wonderful way he loved Carol, his wife of almost 33 years.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. (EST) on Monday, January 9th, 2023, at Walkerton Pentecostal Church with Pastor Dwayne Smith officiating.  Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

Dean Joel Graham

Mr. Dean Graham, 69, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 4th, 2023 at Northwest Health-La Porte.

 

He was born July 6th, 1953 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Thomas E. Graham and Ann K. (Kamradt) Bennitt.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, Dean was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, Kingsford Heights. On June 19th, 1976, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in La Porte, he married Patricia Graham. After joining Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Dean and Patricia renewed their vows on June 10th, 2001. Together they enjoyed volunteering at the Hesston Steam Museum. He worked as a pipe fitter for the Local 172 in South Bend, IN. Dean enjoyed helping others and was known for trading their labor for his plumbing. He loved reading and had a constructive mind, always creating things. His passion was his family and friends who he loved dearly.

 

He is survived by his wife, by his son, Alec (Tiffany Heckman) Graham of La Porte, IN; and brother, Paul (Cherri) Graham of Fairport, NY and many close friends.

 

Dean was preceded in death by his parents and step-sisters, Sandy Garb and Nancy Walkers.

Lillian Rose Stone, 79, of La Porte, passed away on Wednesday, January 4th, 2023 at Miller Health and Rehab, La Porte. 

   

Lillian was born in Michigan City, IN, on June 16th, 1943 to JC and Mildred Anna Auguasta (Gubbine) Miller. 

 

Surviving are her children, Terri (Rey) Brandt of Plymouth, Tom Paterson of Argos, Rob Paterson of Elkhart, and Tim (Shalon) Paterson of Plymouth; 5 grandchildren, Joshua Brandt, Katy Brandt, Henry Paterson, Samantha Paterson, and Grace Paterson, all of Plymouth; significant other of over 25 years, Richard Inman of La Porte; sisters, Patricia Shores of Westville, Jayne (Bob) Bulger of Pinhook, Sue Maupin of La Porte, Sharon Miller of Westville, and Karen Miller of La Porte; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, James and William Paterson; second husband, Richard Stone; and sister, Nancy Juckett.

 

Lillian enjoyed making and selling crafts.  She loved her plants and bird watching.

Norma Jean Barden

Norma Jean Barden, 87, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 4th, 2023 with her family by her side.

 

She was born January 4th, 1936 in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Lester and Ruth Diederich.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, Norma graduated from La Porte High School and was a former member of the First Church of God, La Porte. In 1953, in La Porte, she married Carl Leroy Barden, who preceded her in death in 2015. Norma was an excellent cook and enjoyed sewing and crafting, attending many craft shows. She loved Christmas and Halloween, using her sewing talents to make unique costumes for the whole family. She was a world traveler and spent winters in Arizona with her daughter. "Papa Jean", as she was lovingly known, was a very giving and devoted grandmother, mother and friend.

 

Norma is survived by her son, Ted (Shea) Barden of La Porte; two daughters, Leslie (Michael) Jahns of Petoskey, MI, Kathy (Dennis) Rondau of Bridgman, MI; 2 brothers; 3 sisters; grand children, Amy (Dan) Thornberry, Brandon (Paige) Bernacchi, Justin (Cheryl) Bernacchi, Lindsey (Devin) Low, Preston Jahns, Dylan (Kristen) Barden, Hannah (Ryan) Dooley, Robert Barden; great-grandchildren, Bobby, Lucca, Enza, Geane, Derick, Erika, Piper, Alana, Ryne, and Melody.

 

Along with her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Vicki Young.

Jeanette Wideman

Jeanette Louise Wideman, 90, of New Carlisle, passed away on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023 at Northwest Health - La Porte. 

   

Jeanette was born in Fish Lake, IN, on October 7th, 1932 to Robert A. and Mildred E. (Holland) Stombaugh. 

 

On August 14th, 1954, in Mill Creek, IN, she married Robert, who survives.  Also surviving are her daughters, Cheryl (Steve) Lenig of New Carlisle, Trudy (Ken) Wahl of Sebree, KY and Judy Holse of New Carlisle; 6 grandchildren, Justin (Jama) Lenig of New Carlisle, Bryan (Donielle) Lenig of New Carlisle, Jolene (Austin) Buettner of Owensboro, KY, Ben (Jenna) Holse of Lansing, MI, and Rusty Holse of Elkhart; and 6 great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents.

 

For many years, Jeanette worked in the Rolling Prairie Elementary School cafeteria followed by many years at the La Porte Co. Farm Co-Op office.  She was a member of the Rolling Prairie Christian Church.  Jeannette was a Lionette with the Rolling Prairie Lions Club. 

 

Jeanette enjoyed sewing, reading, shopping, eating out, and sweets.  She also enjoyed traveling with her husband of 68 years.  Most importantly, Jeanette loved visiting with her friends and family.  Jeanette enjoyed the years she lived in her Rolling Prairie home, prior to moving to La Porte and ultimately residing at Hamilton Grove in New Carlisle.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

Guy LaVaughn Hart, 71, of New Carlisle, passed away on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023 at Northwest Health - La Porte. 

   

Guy was born in Coldwater, MI, on September 25th, 1951 to Jonas LaVaughn Hart and Verna (DeForest) Turnpaugh. 

 

On July 28th, 1973 in La Porte, IN, he married Barbara "Barb" Meyers, who survives.  Also surviving are his son, Robert (Nicole) Hart of South Bend; 6 grandchildren, Jacqueline, Makenzie, and Makayla Scarborough, Jacob (Tionna) Bright, and Breawnna and Jackson Hart; 1 great-granddaughter, Lola Bright; 7 siblings, Bonnie (Thurlow) Maggart of Fremont, Arthur (Berniece) Hart of Tekonsha, MI, Terry (Mike) Repp of Sevierville, TN, Lonnie (Linda) Hart of Kalamazoo, MI, Earlean (Pat) Mate of Coldwater, MI, Victor (Brenda) McVicker of Camden, MI, and Tammy (Kevin Lewis) Turnpaugh of Tekonsha, MI; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Christopher Leon Hart.

 

He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1969 - 1973, serving during the Vietnam War.

 

Guy was a custodian for many years at New Prairie United School Corporation.  He was a member of First Christian Church, Rolling Prairie.  Most importantly, Guy loved being and playing with his grandchidlren.

William Conrad Whitacre , 84, passed away on Monday, January 1, 2023 at St. Mary Medical Center, Hobart.

 

William was born on October 20, 1938 in South Bend, IN, to Arnet and Loa (Geifer) Whitacre.

 

On December 15, 1961 in Brandywine, MI, he married Mildred Harris, who preceded him in death.  Surviving are his children, Wayne Whitacre of Chicago,IL and Marlene Choromokos of Naperville, IL; 2 grandchildren, Alicia and Neil Choromokos; and sister, Mary Jo Hall.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Sharon Whitacre and Donna Marten; brother, Tim Whitacre; and grandson, Leo Choromokos.

 

During his work career, William worked as a butcher and truck driver.  He also owned White Hen Pantries in La Porte.

Greg was presently employed with Showman Supplies, Inc., La Porte, Indiana for many years as a semi-truck driver.  He also served in the US Marine Corp.

Weldon Cooke

Weldon John Cooke, MD, passed away on December 7th, 2022. Weldon was born on July 27th, 1927, in Oakland, CA to Robert and Mrs. Olive (Montgomery) Cooke. He went on to graduate from high school and then went to Wheaton College. At Wheaton College, he met and married Frances Willard, and they were married for 32 years. At the end of WWII, Weldon joined the U.S. Army, where he served two years. After this, he obtained his medical degree from Northwestern Medical School, and subsequently did an internship at Cook County Hospital and a surgery residency through Hines General Hospital in Chicago (Loyola University).

 

Weldon worked as a general surgeon at Berrien General Hospital, Berrien Center, MI. Later, he founded the Southwestern Medical Clinic. Since then, hundreds of physicians have joined. Southwestern Medical clinic had medical missions as a primary focus, and through it, he taught new surgical techniques to numerous missionary doctors when they came home on furlough. Weldon also took many missionary trips to Haiti, where he worked in a small hospital, at times accompanied by one of his four sons, who all later became physicians, as did 10 of his grandchildren.

 

Weldon moved to Michigan City, IN, in 1980, after marrying Mary Wadsworth. Here, he later opened a walk-in medical clinic, Med-Watch, which still operates today. He retired in 2017, at the age of 90, after practicing Addiction Medicine in LaPorte, IN.

 

Weldon was an active member of the Berrien Center Bible Church for 20 years. Later, Weldon and his wife, Mary, were integral parts of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in LaPorte, IN. His faith also influenced how he lived and practiced medicine through the years. Weldon is preceded in death by a brother, Robert Cooke; and a sister, Almarose (Cooke) Wordon. He is survived by his wife, Mary Wadsworth-Cooke; and his four sons, John (Azita) Cooke of Sanford, FL, James (Terri) Cooke of Atlanta, GA, David (Jeannette) Cooke of Berrien Springs, MI, and Daniel (Becky) Cooke of Granger, IN. He is also survived by his stepsons, Phillip (Laura) Wadsworth and Dale (Joy) Wadsworth, both of LaPorte, IN; fourteen grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. (CT) on Sunday, January 8th, 2023 at Seventh Day Adventist Church, La Porte.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, January 7th, 2023 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center and from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Sunday at the church. 

 

Memorial donations may be made to the Door Prairie Adventist Christian School (DPACS), 1480 Boyd Boulevard, La Porte, IN 46350.

Jean Marie Sommer

Jean Marie Sommer, 90, La Porte, IN, passed away Sunday, January 1st, 2023, at 2:06 am in Hamilton Communities, Inc., New Carlisle, IN.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, January 6th, 2023, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN with  Pastor Nancy Nichols officiating. Private burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte, IN.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Thursday and from 10:00 am - 11:00 am Friday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.    

 

She was born September 17th, 1932, in Galien, MI to the late Leon and Muriel (Unruh) DuBois. On May 26th, 1951, in Galien, Michigan she married Wayne Sommer who preceded her on February 22nd, 2021.

 

Surviving are three sons, David (Connie) Sommer of The Villages, FL, Dr. Darry (Tena) Sommer of Vernon Hills, IL and Dr. Dennis (Dr. Kathryn) Sommer of La Porte, IN; daughter-in-law, Marlene Sommer of Michigan City, IN; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

 

She was also preceded in death by her son, Douglas Sommer.   

 

She was a retired educator for the Michigan City area school system. and a member of First United Methodist Church, Michigan City, Indiana.  Jean Marie enjoyed traveling and the hobby of collecting sewing thimbles.

December 29th, 2022, at 3:47 am in her home after a lengthy illness.
