Karen Jane (Cannon) Garrett

Karen Jane (Cannon) Garrett, January 13, 1941 - April 11, 2026.

Karen, a devout Catholic her entire life, was fiercely independent, graceful, and deeply loyal. She carried herself with a quiet, unwavering confidence. Karen loved life on her own terms and in the end, left this world the very same way.

Karen married Ray Garrett on July 11, 1959, and they created a union that would stand the test of time. Together, they were a force, a united front, a strong pillar for one another.

Karen poured her heart into everything -- her family, friends, cooking, baking, and gardening. She loved to entertain and was the ultimate hostess, greeting her guests with a warm smile and an unmistakable attention to detail. She was a keeper of holiday traditions, making every occasion feel very special. During Christmastime, it was common to find most inanimate objects adorned with a red bow. Ray often joked that sitting for too long might result in one being placed on you as well.

She took great pride in her home, her yard, and her appearance - always tending to each with care and intention. She was almost as "put together" at home as she was when she went out. She was also thoughtful and diplomatic, choosing her words carefully so as not to offend. Karen loved to laugh, and laugh often she did.

Her face lit up when she saw her family and friends, but her eyes smiled the most when she saw her grandchildren. She taught her family the importance of showing up for others. Karen and Ray seized every opportunity to support their loved ones, whether attending their son's performances or cheering on their grandchildren at sporting events, dance recitals, or band concerts.

Karen is preceded in death by her parents, William Cannon and Florence (DeVleeschower) Cannon Holt; and her sisters, Mary Alice Hite, Margaret Carlson, and Claire Passafume.

Karen is survived by her husband, Ray; daughter, Diane (Scott) Jamieson; son, Bob (Kinnari Vora) Garrett; grandchildren, Ryan (Bergen) Jamieson and Kathryn Jamieson; and great-grandson, Garrett Jamieson. Also survived by her sister, Kathleen (Curtis) Holmes; brothers, John (Mary Ann) Cannon and Michael (Denise) Cannon; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation and a Mass of Christian Burial are on Friday, July 3, 2026, at Holy Family Parish-St. Peter Catholic Church. Visitation begins at 10 a.m., followed by Mass at 11 a.m. In the meantime, you can honor Karen by getting together for dinner, sharing lots of laughs, and raising a glass of CC with a splash.

Rickey Allen Gurley

Rickey Allen Gurley, 66, of La Porte, IN, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at Brickyard Healthcare-Terrace Care Center.
He was born on November 25, 1959, in Gary, IN, to Lloyd and " Jeanette" (Henley) Gurley.
Rickey is survived by his children, Jacqueline, Rickey Jr., Timothy, Todd, and Kenley; siblings, Wilma (Al) Bond of Rapid City, SD, Jeff (Linda) Gurley of Memphis, TN, Cynthia (Paul) Przybylinski of Michigan City, David (Chris) Gurley of Hobart, Keith Gurley of Westville, Terry Gurley of Westville, and Kimberly (Matthew) Przybylinski of Michigan City; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Gurley.
Look at that smile....there was a lot of charm behind it. Even in his last days, he charmed the staff and workers at Brickyard Healthcare-Terrace Care Center. Rickey made them laugh, just as he did his family and others in his life. No one was a stranger to Rickey. He had the gift of "gab", like his father. He would give you the shirt from his back, like his mother. Don't mention the hunting, fishing, and sports. He could give you the stats on football players.
He was one of those men who awakened before dawn and headed to the construction site. Ricky would work all day and be ready to do it all over again with joy and pride, but not everyone remembers him this way. He had a dark side that he could not shake. Rickey was an example of the prodigal son. The family chose to see Rickey through God's eyes. That smile--that charm. Rickey's siblings pray that others will be delivered from evil strongholds and that their eyes and ears will be opened to the love of Our Father.
Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family c/o Cynthia Przybylinski, 2900 Monroe Street, La Porte, IN 46350.

Joel Hoff

Joel Hoff, October 17, 1956 - April 10, 2026.
On April 10, Joel Patrick Hoff, age 69, of Ogden Dunes, Indiana, passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, and crossed gently into the arms of his Heavenly Father, a place beyond pain, struggle, and tears. The son of Charlotte (Berry) Hoff (Lahey) and Paul Hoff, he was the fifth of eight children raised in South Bend, Indiana.
Growing up, he attended St. Matthew’s School, where in 7th grade, he learned he had a kidney defect from birth, an early challenge that shaped his resilience. While attending Marian High School, he faced further hardship, including the tragic loss of his father, Paul, in an auto accident on December 17, 1971. Yet Joel persevered, forming lifelong friendships and, against all odds, becoming an all-star track athlete. After graduation, he attended Tri-State University, where he was recognized by the National Honor Society in Business Administration in 1978, and in May 1979, earned a degree in accounting before obtaining his CPA. After years of dialysis and health struggles, a miracle came on November 18, 1981, when his sister Mary donated a kidney, restoring his life. With daily medication, his health flourished, and the kidney remained fully functional for the rest of his life - a remarkable 45 years.
After his transplant, he worked at Crowe Chizek Accounting for several years. He then went on to have a deeply fulfilling and rewarding career with the Sisters of St. Francis Health Services, which spanned over 37 years.  A devout Catholic, Joel lived out his faith through both his work and his generosity. Alongside his dedicated career, he devoted his time to St. Jude Parish on the south side of South Bend, IN. He retired in 2020, closing a long and meaningful chapter. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with family, listening to music, living on Lake Michigan, golfing, coordinating and celebrating Marian class reunions, attending neighborhood events like Wine on the Wall, and enjoying the beach with family, friends, and neighbors. To share his passion for music, he created Dirty Dog Audio, building high-fidelity speakers for music lovers all over America to enjoy with loved ones.

Born on May 19, 1954, in La Porte to the late John Leffert and Mary Cecilia
(Knight) Leffert, Peggy, was a proud graduate of LaCrosse High School, Class of 1972. She carried with her throughout life the values of hard work, resilience, and kindness that defined her character.
On October 11, 1985, in La Porte, Peggy married the love of her life, Lewis
Stephen “Steve” Willett. Together, they built a life rooted in devotion, partnership, and shared adventure. Their bond was evident in all they did, especially in their later years when they owned and operated their beloved food trailer, The Beef Chief, traveling throughout the Midwest and serving up great food and warm smiles at festivals far and wide.
Peggy was a woman of many talents and passions. A graduate of the floral design program at Purdue University, she found joy and artistry in her work as a floral designer, creating beauty that touched countless lives. She also worked as a catering manager, where her natural gift for hospitality shone brightly. Known as a wonderful cook, Peggy expressed her love through the meals she prepared, bringing family and friends together around the table.
At home, Peggy’s gentle spirit was evident in the life she cultivated. She was an avid gardener with a true green thumb, nurturing vibrant gardens and her house plants, which reflected her care and patience. Her love for animals was equally profound—she raised Dobermans and Dachshunds, caring for them with the same tenderness she extended to everyone around her.
Peggy’s family remembers her as a loving soul with a gentle heart, a hard worker, and a true fighter who faced life’s challenges with quiet strength and grace. She remained a trooper until the very end, leaving behind a legacy of perseverance, warmth, and unwavering love.

Ronald Eugene Spence

Ronald Eugene Spence, May 6, 1940 – April 6, 2026.

Ronald Eugene Spence, 85, of La Porte, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born May 6, 1940, in La Porte, IN, to Eugene and Helen (Brantley) Spence.

Ron graduated from Rolling Prairie High School in 1958 and served in the United States Navy shortly thereafter. He worked for Whirlpool Corporation for 35 years until his early retirement at the age of 56. On May 21, 1977, he married Joannie Weisjohn, whom he met at Whirlpool, and they shared nearly 49 years of beautiful marriage.

Ron will be remembered fondly by those who had the privilege of knowing him. He was very social and friendly. Ron was always running into old friends or making new ones, so often that his grandkids viewed him as a “local celebrity.” Until his final days, he could be seen walking his dog Beau, working in his yard on his latest landscaping project, enjoying the view with his wife Joannie, or snacking on Pop-Tarts and graham crackers in his favorite recliner. Ron always looked forward to visits from his children and grandchildren and played a very influential role in their lives. Whether he was coaching or cheering on his grandsons in various sports or developing an appreciation for performing arts at his granddaughter’s show choir competitions, Ron was always a devoted supporter of the people he loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest sister, Marlene Svetic.

Ron was survived by his wife, Joannie, for one day before her passing.

His legacy will be carried forward by his two daughters, Julie Kos (Steven) of La Porte and Carrie Spence (Karen) of Carmel, IN; three grandchildren, Steven Kos, Katie Spence, and William Spence; two sisters, Janet Sonnenberg of South Bend and Kathy Haenes of South Bend; many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Ronnie; and his beloved dog, Beau.

Also, in memory of Ron, it is our family’s wish that you will carry his spirit forward by being friendly and kind to everyone you meet. Wave to your neighbors, take the time to say hello to old friends in the grocery store and local restaurants, and always look for ways to brighten the days of those around you.

It was at Whirlpool where Joannie met her future husband, Ronald Spence. Joannie and Ron married on May 21, 1977, and enjoyed nearly 49 years of a beautiful marriage. Ron preceded Joannie in death by one day.

Joannie was a light in the lives of everyone who knew her. She was funny, generous, and extraordinarily kind. Joannie enjoyed hosting holiday gatherings in her home. Christmas was her favorite holiday, but there were many fun-filled gatherings with extended family for both Easter and the 4th of July, where great memories were made. Joannie loved shopping with her best friends, going out to dinner, reading, baking sweet treats for her grandkids, and daily couch snuggles with her dog, Beau.

While Joannie will be deeply missed by her loved ones on earth, they find comfort in knowing that she is at peace and forever reunited with her husband, her parents, and her brother William “Bill” Weisjohn.

She is survived by her two step-daughters, Julie Kos (Steven) of La Porte and Carrie Spence (Karen) of Carmel, IN; three grandchildren, Steven Kos, Katie Spence, and William Spence; three sisters in law, Janet Sonnenberg of South Bend, Kathy Haenes of South Bend, and Sharon Weisjohn of Ontario, CA; many nieces and nephews; and lifelong friends who were truly family to Joannie including Debra Birkholz, Carla Antos, and Michele Belzowski. And of course, her beloved dog, Beau, who will miss her dearly.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd. La Porte, (219) 362-3100, is caring for the arrangements.

Joannie was a true animal lover. Throughout her life, Joannie shared a home with some of the luckiest dogs to ever walk this earth, including Cindy, Corkie, Runt, Skeeter, Eddie, Casey, Charlie, and Beau. We can only imagine her joy in reuniting with the pets who passed before her.

Priscilla Anne Natale Wolpert Natale

Priscilla Anne Natale Wolpert Natale,78, passed away at 1:48 pm on March 30, 2026, at home, where her family had camped out in her room in recliners while 70s Yacht Rock played softly in the background.

Priscilla was born on March 18, 1948, in South Amboy, New Jersey, and raised by Herman “Hunky” and Joan (Brown) Troha.  She graduated in 1966 from Roxbury High School in Roxbury, New Jersey.

She left the land of pork roll and diners and moved to the Long Beach coast of Lake Michigan in 1969, where she married Tom Natale and received the gift of two bonus sons.  In 1970, she gave birth to her favorite (only) daughter.

In 1983, she married Manfred Wolpert, who had to leave Germany to find the perfect life partner.  He stayed by her side and cared for her during her three bouts of breast cancer and this last journey of dementia and primary progressive aphasia.  Although she lost her ability to talk, you could see how she communicated her love for him through her eyes.

Priscilla loved to be the hostess for many planned dinner parties, impromptu deck gatherings, and fondue in front of the fireplace after a cold day of cross-country skiing with her tight-knit friend group.  She could never pass up an opportunity to pet a dog or a kitty that would cross her path.  She spent time walking one of her large collies or shepherds down Lake Shore Drive or feeding the neighborhood kitties on her front porch (and unfortunately, the rude opossum and raccoon that would crash the party).

Priscilla will be sorely missed and remembered by her husband Manfred, her daughter Donna Natale (Andrew) Mason, bonus sons Bruce (Becky) Natale and Tom (Nancy) Natale, sister Stacey (Dave) Apgar, and brother Marc Troha.

Priscilla was a firm believer in gifting an experience for her loved ones and not a replaceable item.  Her grandchildren, Jack and Molly Mason, would be taken to events in Chicago, their first movie, a trip to the zoo, or a solo sleepover.  For her nieces, Erin (Apgar) Daingerfield, Whitney (Apgar) Trujillo, and nephew, Devon Apgar…a horse and sleigh ride at Christmas or a trip to the hair/nail salon.

All who loved Priscilla dearly will remember her beautiful and kind soul to all humans and animals.  Please don’t pass up the opportunity for a wet kiss by a big fluffy dog and a hug from someone with open arms, and with this, please consider a donation in her honor to Dunes Hospice in Valparaiso, IN, or the Michiana Humane Society in Michigan City, IN.

A memorial gathering will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 West Johnson Road, La Porte, (219) 362-3100. A visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
