Russell Irl Cavinder

Russell Irl Cavinder, of New Carlisle, IN, passed away on  January 17th, 2024, at the age of 78, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.  Russell passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by the love of his family.

Russell was born on May 15th, 1945, in Plainwell, MI, to the late Emery and Velma (Short) Cavinder.  Russell was the youngest of 5 children, three brothers DeWayne (Ruth) Cavinder, Donald (Alice) Cavinder, Chester (Cynthia) Cavinder, and one sister, Lila Jean (John) McCoy, all of whom preceded him in death.

Surviving Russell is his wife of almost 60 years, Gail (Hartwick) Cavinder; they met as teenagers in the fall of 1962.  Together they attended her Junior and Senior proms before getting married on July 11th, 1964.

He is also survived by their three children, Lynn (Delmar) Chupp of LaGrange, IN, Cindy Campbell of La Porte, IN and Robby Cavinder of New Carlisle, IN; seven grandchildren, Chris (Kara) Chapman, Brandon (Brenda) Pointon, Stephanie Chapman (Shelby), Meghan (Gabriel) Thomas, Jacqueline (Chris) Kelley, Amanda Chupp and David (Diana) Chupp; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Russell joined the USAF and served 4 years at Bunker Hill (Grissom) Air Force Base in Peru, IN. After his discharge, he worked at Joy Manufacturing for 23 years before they unexpectedly closed their doors and moved the business south.  He then went to work at Dye Plumbing and Heating for one year, until a horrible accident caused him to lose his range of motion and use of his left arm.

After recovering, in true Russell style and determination, he pursued a BA degree in business at Purdue University and studied to obtain his Real Estate license.  He worked for Coldwell Banker for three years before fully retiring.

Anyone who knew Russell knew that his family and huge circle of friends meant everything to him.  He loved to find ways to brighten your day and always seemed to have a keen sense of knowing when someone needed help, support, or just a kind word to make them smile.  He would go out of his way for anyone whom he felt was struggling or in need.

Russell had an infectious sense of humor and brightened up any room he entered, bringing joy wherever he went.  No matter the circumstance, one would always leave with a smile and a fun memory of when you were with him.  It was not uncommon to have a kiss blown to you with him saying, "always remember, I love you." Russell leaves a huge hole in the lives and hearts of many.

Russell loved Bluegrass music and he and his wife Gail became involved with the Rolling Prairie Community Center, holding several positions on the board.  He organized a group of musicians and engaged with others who loved to sing and perform monthly on Bluegrass night for several years, which only ended due to his decline in health.  Russell and Gail also traveled to different Bluegrass festivals and country music concerts, where they met various performers and made several friends along the way.  He loved helping Gail in the garden, going camping, tinkering with his many ideas and projects, and visiting garage sales and thrift stores.

Russell was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in La Porte, IN, and served for a few years as a Church board member along with volunteering in various positions at the St. John's thrift store, where he continued going out of his way to help others in need.

Above all, Russell loved life.  The stories of events shared with his family and friends and those adventurous moments that we recall are all treasured, and will go on to continue to bring smiles and laughter for all of us to share with others.

Russell has always had a love for pigs since he was a child and over the years has collected numerous pigs in various forms. Like the old phrase "when pigs fly" that was on a t-shirt he often wore; until we meet again....May this pig lover soar with angels' wings.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024, at 1 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in La Porte, IN.  Burial will follow at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, La Porte.

Rebecca Sue Shott

Rebecca Sue Shott, 67, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, January 9th, 2024, at home, with her family by her side.

She was born October 5th, 1956, in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Carl Bilderback and Penny (Kolar) Bilderback.

A lifelong resident of the area, Rebecca graduated from LaPorte High School class of 1975. She also received a bachelor’s in marketing from Purdue University. During Rebecca’s years of academic studies, she found a love for photography. She was a born natural and her hobby grew into a passion, that in turn, turned into a profession. Rebecca went on to become a professional photographer for the South Bend Tribune, covering a multitude of interesting stories over the years. Motorsports photography was her favorite and as a member of the Associated Press, she never missed an Indy 500. She shot from all four turns, often retaining the role of “turn captain”. In 2001 Rebecca took the winning shot of Helio Castroneves crossing the finish line to win his first of four Indy titles. The photo was published across the world, landing on the cover of Brazil’s national racing magazine.

On October 21st, 2006, in New Carlisle, IN, Rebecca wed in Christian matrimony Ted Shott, who survives. They met each other at The Prairie Tavern in Rolling Prairie where Becky worked on the weekends, more for the fun of it than anything but it sure did work out great because she met the most important person of her life! Rebecca enjoyed that life to the fullest, becoming an excellent cook with a huge collection of cookbooks. Rebecca also enjoyed going off to auctions with her bestie, Shelia, and they never missed their annual trip to the haunted house in Niles, Michigan! Ted & Becky, both having a love for adventure, spent time together traveling from the East Coast to the West, from the Bahamas to Canada but their favorite place to go was into the upper UP of Michigan as they loved to ride their snowmobiles together. Their last trip together was to Las Vegas with their dear friends Barry & Tracy Fitzpatrick. Becky was also always ready to jump on the back of Ted’s motorcycle for a day of adventure through the country. In the last several years Becky could no longer do all the things they did in the past, so Ted bought a Street Rod and Becky loved to go for a ride whether it was driving in the parade or better yet, going to Dairy Queen for an ice cream. Becky was born with a gifted voice and a natural love for music. She was always the first in line on Saturday morning at The Roxie Music Store whenever a new vinyl was released, and she cherished her collection. She had already become an avid concertgoer by the time she was in high school, often maneuvering herself backstage for autographs. She loved a vast array of genres, but Becky & Ted enjoyed seeing multiple country stars together.

Rebecca loved God, her life, her family, and her friends. She was devoted and loyal to all. May her bright light & big smile continue to live in the hearts of everyone who knew her.

Huntington’s Disease may have cut her life short, but it did not win. She lived to the fullest to the bittersweet end.

Kristy Kay Harlow

Kristy Kay Harlow, 53, of Union Mills, Indiana, passed away Sunday, December 31st, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born June 29th, 1970, in Michigan City, Indiana, the daughter of Donald Wayne Ashmore and Carolyn (Eberhart) Ashmore.

A lifelong resident of the area, Kristy was a 1988 graduate of Rogers High School in Michigan City, IN. As a teenager, she loved to hang out with friends, cruising Lincolnway, and listening to music. As she grew older, her work ethic became undeniably one for the books. She got her first job at the age of sixteen.  From then on, she had always worked at least 3 or 4 jobs at a time. Kristy was a bank teller for several years, stepped in to work multiple family businesses, such as K's Drywall and R&L Roofing, worked at SevenOKs for over 10 years as a sales representative, ran a horse barn for a local stable, and finally ended her career path as a Regional Manager for Santefort Real Estate Group, LLC. She was raised with horses but started riding more when her children became involved with 4-H and this is where her life began to change for the better. As most people know, Kristy's life revolved around her children, Kody Harlow (son) and Kylie Harlow (daughter). She was a devoted mother who dedicated her life to nurturing and shaping their future. Kristy was a fervent advocate for education and personal growth. She recognized the importance of empowering her children with knowledge and instilling in them the values that would guide them through life. Unfortunately, around 2019, Kristy was diagnosed with breast cancer, and her friends and family came together to create a strong support group. Shortly after her final treatments, Kristy and her friend group created a horseback riding group called the MTR8, which she loved, and it slowly became a major part of her life.  She also enjoyed camping in her living quarters horse trailer, which was her dream to own. Over those years of horseback riding and camping, Kristy was able to create a new family tradition along with building lifelong friendships.  Her monthly massages were her happy place and more recently, she began to travel, with Mexico being one of her most current favorite destinations. Kristy thoroughly enjoyed Christmas and took great pride in her perfectly decorated Christmas Trees. Her most precious gifts each year were her family and friends, and she will be greatly missed by them all. The countless memories of joy, laughter, and love that she generously shared will be remembered forever.

William "Bill" H. Edlen

William "Bill" H. Edlen, aged 76, of Michigan City, Indiana, departed this life peacefully at his home on December 29th, 2023. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, on October 10th, 1947, to the late Frank and Mildred Marie (Feldkamp) Edlen, William was a beacon of strength and joy to his family and friends. In his youth, he was affectionately known as Willie, but as he matured, he embraced the name Bill, by which many came to know and love him.

Bill's legacy is carried on by his devoted children, Keli (Mike) Siddall and Chad Edlen; his cherished grandchildren, Kelsey (Alex Schlagel) Siddall, Kyle (Paige) Siddall, Cody Siddall, Austin Edlen, and Elizabeth Edlen; and his adored great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Mary (James) Powers, Wanda (James) Mallon, Carolyn Wilke, Clarence (Sandra) Edlen, James (Sheila) Edlen, Ollie Edlen, and John Edlen, along with a host of nieces and nephews who will miss his guidance and humor. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Bonnie Hartman, and his great-grandson, Liam Alexander Schlagel, whom he held dear.

Bill's service to his country was marked by his time in the US Army, where he was stationed in Germany. His professional life included 25 years as a dedicated crane operator at Midwest Steel, followed by a fulfilling retirement as a technician for Adams Remco. Bill's work ethic was as strong as his commitment to his country and his family.

A man of many interests, Bill had a passion for classic cars that knew no bounds. He spent countless hours restoring, fixing, flipping, and collecting these timeless beauties. His love for the game of golf was matched by his enjoyment of socializing with friends, whether on the green or elsewhere. Bill's stubbornness was legendary, and he was known for engaging in "Politically Correct" conversations that showcased his wit and often left others exasperated but smiling. Despite his tenacity in debate, Bill's heart was always softest when it came to his grandchildren, for whom his love was boundless.

A Celebration of Life Service with Military Honors for Bill will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 5th, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Friends and family are welcome to gather for visitation from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Following the service, cremation will take place.  Memorial donations may be made to the family c/o Keli Siddall, 2900 Monroe Street, La Porte, IN 46350.

Bill's life was one of service, love, and laughter. His memory will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his stories will be told for generations. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all those who have offered support during this time.
