Josefina was born on May 23, 1945, in Lipa City, Philippines, to the late Felix Bautista and Inocencia R. (Rocamora) Bautista. On December 20, 1975, in Monroe, Louisiana, she married Dr. Jose R. Labayo, who survives in Michigan City, Indiana.
Also surviving are two sons: Ray Anthony (Allison) Labayo of River Forest, IL, and Jonathan Bautista Labayo of Terre Haute, IN; and two grandchildren: Neko Labayo and Luka Labayo, both of River Forest, IL. She was preceded in death by both her parents and two sisters: Zoraida
B. Reyes and Lagrimas B. Cobarrubias.
Josefina graduated from the University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines with a Bachelor of Science and continued at Manila Central University, earning her medical degree. She trained at Mount Sinai Hospital and Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, IL, and then moved to Michigan City, where she had a distinguished career as an anesthesiologist at St. Anthony Hospital. Josefina retired in 2016. A dedicated member of the Indiana Philippine Medical Association and the Missionary Families of Christ, she lived a life committed to her faith, career, and community. Josefina had a deep love for music, dancing, and movies. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family and friends. She especially loved visiting and caring for her grandchildren, who fondly called her “Lola.” Josefina loved going to the theatre to see musicals with her elder son. A special morning ritual of sharing coffee with her youngest son always brought her much joy.
