Carol J. Harris, 86, of Culver, Indiana, passed away Monday, May 19, 2025, at Crown Point Health Care in Crown Point, Indiana.
She was born June 10, 1938, in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Horace Swedersky and Lelah (Mills) Swedersky.
Carol grew up in La Porte and graduated from La Porte High School. On March 12, 1960, in La Porte, she married Albert Eugene Harris, who preceded her in death on June 7, 1991. Carol was also preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Norman Swedersky, two sisters, Mary Garrison and Arlene Gerke, and her grandson, Michael Kala.
After her marriage, Carol lived with her husband in Harvey, IL, and Westville, IN, where she raised her children. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the VFW Auxiliary. In her earlier years, Carol enjoyed gardening vegetables, canning them, and then cooking with the fruits of her labor. More recently, she worked crossword puzzles, played cards, loved bingo, and was an avid reader. Her passion, though, was her family, especially her precious grandchildren.
Carol is survived by her two daughters, Christine Kala of Crown Point, IN, and Kathleen Van Tassell of Terry, MS; grandchildren, Heather Kala, Sean Harris, and Dein Fly; great-grandchildren, Brayden Kala, Kutara Harris, Layne Harris, Carson Harris, and Walker Fly, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN. Cremation has been selected. Interment will take place next to her husband in St. John's Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Carol's name to the church.
