Jeffrey “Root Beer” Lantz of Union Mills, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 25, 2026.
Jeff was born on February 17, 1955, to Duane and Josephine Lantz of Pinola, Indiana. After meeting as students of LaPorte High School, Jeff married Susan (Bauer) Lantz on August 27th, 1977. They resided together in Union Mills for all 48 years of their marriage.
Jeff is survived by Sue and their three children Carrie (Ryan) Strauch of Union Mills, Amy (Darrel) Kleist of Hanna, and Jason (Jessica) Lantz of Avon; his nine grandchildren: Brycen Strauch, Makenzee (Ethereal) Townes, Rilee Kleist, Clayten Strauch, Ashlen Strauch, Logan Kleist, Madilyn Lantz, Lilian Lantz, and Evelyn Lantz; and many siblings, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Jeff retired as a Union Plumber out of Local 210. He had previously worked at Westville Schools, where he had many fond memories of past teachers, students, and staff. Jeff worked alongside his father, operating Lantz Plumbing and Heating, until he eventually started his own Lantz Well Drilling business. He was known as Pa (Paul) not just by family, but by those closest to him. Jeff loved spending time with his grandchildren, attending their sporting events, going fishing, camping, playing cards or dice, and cheering on the Chicago Bears and Cubs, no matter how frustrated they would make him. Jeff enjoyed playing the drums in several bands and listening to live music. He was also a dedicated member, holding many offices and chairmanships throughout the years, of Post 295’s Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Riders. He was known for his infamous Lantz Family Fish Fry every Fall, when he had a chance to bring together all of his friends and family, from past and present, for one day a year. Jeff never liked being the center of attention, and per his wishes, there will be no services. Cremation will take place.
Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W Johnson Rd., La Porte, (219) 362-3100, is caring for the arrangements.
