Laverne J. Hughes, 93, of Michigan City, and formerly of Long Beach, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2024.

Laverne was born February 3, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio to Albert and Jennie Glicker. She graduated from Hiram College and in 1953 married John C. Hughes, who died in 1992.

Surviving are her daughter, Susan (Robert) Wright; five grandchildren, Jonathan (Marian Butcher) Hughes, Adam (Victoria) Wright, Kathryn (Devdet) Shende, Rebecca Hughes and Brian Wright; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Makayla, Kennedy and Grant Wright and Lucas Shende; nephews Eric and Brian Glicker; and daughter-in-law Kathleen Hughes.

She was preceded in death by her son, Evan Hughes; brother, Albert Glicker; and devoted companion for many years, Howard Heckmann.

After residing in Coshocton, Ohio following her marriage, Laverne and John (Jack) moved to Long Beach, Indiana in 1960 when her husband accepted the position as rector of St. Andrew’s by-the-Lake Episcopal Church. She faithfully served the church as a dedicated clergy spouse until Jack’s retirement in 1987. They then found a new church family at The Episcopal Church of the Mediator where she remained an active member until her death.

Laverne spent her life serving God and through His example shared her love with those she met. She found meaning and purpose living her life in accordance to God’s will, recognizing the blessings bestowed on her and manifesting that thankfulness by reaching out to others to share that joy through the kindness she extended to them. She maintained many deep, lasting friendships.

A memorial service will take place at 11:00 AM EDT on Wednesday, August 14, at The Episcopal Church of the Mediator, 14280 Red Arrow Highway, Harbert, Michigan, 49115. Visitation will be from 9:30 -10:30 AM. A reception will follow at the church. Please note these times listed are in Eastern time; for those coming from the Central Time Zone the service will begin at 10:00 AM.

Arrangements are being handled by the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel. 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana.
