John George Vapensky

John George Vapensky, 83, died June 15, 2020 in Chicago, Illinois. A graveside service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, June 23 at Pine Lake Cemetery.

John was a proud resident of LaPorte for over 40 years.  He was a long-time parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, where he served as an usher for much of that time. He was also very dedicated to the church’s fundraising by running various booths at the Polish Fest for many years.  He was also a long-time member of the Knights of Columbus.

John worked at Bethlehem Steel as a Chemical Lab Foreman for 33 years before retiring. After that, he loved traveling to Chicago to see his kids and grandkids, proudly touting his “secret route”, Highway 41, to anyone that would listen... hilariously rendering it a non-secret.   He had a great sense of humor.

John was also a lover of anything sports.  He was especially fond of the Baltimore Orioles, the Indianapolis Colts, everything Notre Dame, and of course the Cubs.  He was thrilled to see them finally clinch a World Series championship.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Joan.  He is survived by his daughter Nikki Marvel (Scott) and his son John (Aimee LeBlanc).  He has three grandchildren, Alex Vapensky, Mia Marvel, and Molly Vapensky.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel in La Porte.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in John’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
