Daniel Robert Hosna

Daniel Robert Hosna, 72, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away at 6:59 p.m. on Saturday, January 28th, 2023, in his home after a hard-fought battle with cancer, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Dan started his adventure in Berwyn, Illinois on April 26th, 1950. He was born to Lorraine D (Timm) and William R. Hosna and was raised by his mother and her husband Charles T. Leach. Dan is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years, Janet (Amberg) Hosna, his two children, T.C. Hosna (Jon Voelz) of Westminster, Colorado and Carolyn Hosna of Austin, Texas.  His pride and joy were his succession of Bulldogs and Schnauzers.

A graduate of Indiana State University with a degree in journalism, Dan was an award-winning senior sales executive with a printing company for over 40 years. He leaves behind many cherished colleagues and clients.

An avid boater from an early age, Dan acquired his first boat in high school. With Sea Scout Troop 132 he co-skippered a sailing cruise of the Out Islands of the Bahamas, and later returned to cruise the Islands with family and friends. Dan was a founding member of Hobie Fleet 126 and took part in several Chicago-to-Mackinac Island sailboat races. Dan and Jan created the first Dingy Derby treasure hunt held at the Washington Park Marina that grew in popularity for more ten years. He loved weekends on Lake Michigan and taking summer cruises along the eastern shoreline in his SeaRay cruiser with his family. A long-time member of the Michigan City Yacht Club, Dan was the Club’s Commodore between 1996 and 1998. The camaraderie he shared with his boating friends produced a real joy in Dan’s life.

In addition to boating, Dan loved non-fiction history books, walks on the beach with his dogs, and playing pranks. His family will miss his sly sense of humor, favorite sayings, inspiring work-ethic, heartfelt correspondence, and his skippering skills at the helm that always made them feel confident and safe.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, March 11th, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Michigan City, Indiana.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the South Shore Sailing School at 12 on the Lake P.O. Box 245 Michigan City, IN and/or the Michigan City Power Squadron 4909 Waters Edge Drive, Valparaiso, IN  46483.
