  • Purdue University - Bachelors in Political Science;
  • George Washington University - Master's in Legislative Affairs

?What is your occupation?

  • Founding Director of the Center for Talent and Opportunity at the Sagamore Institute

What is your candidate platform?

1st District voters are angry, disgusted, and disillusioned with Washington. Citizens feel like they have no role in a government that has gotten too big and plays an ever-growing role in our lives, decisions, and opportunities. We feel it when we check out at the grocery store, when we fill up at the pump, and when we experience the consequences of illegal drugs coming to our communities through an open border. I will fight for ideas that put workers and families first, champion economic innovation, celebrate the dignity of work and earned success, prioritize a strong national defense, safeguard families' rights in their children's education, and protect the unborn.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. I've stood the watch to support and defend the Constitution and understand the sacrifices we ask of our men and women in uniform and their families. I'm now asking for your vote to send me to Washington to fight to secure our rights and the liberties that allow our communities to thrive.
  2. As a mayor and leader in state government, I've worked closely with leaders across the Region, state, country, and globe to help businesses create new jobs and ensure Hoosier students and adults connect with the opportunity they provide.
  3. I've taken on tough challenges all my life and have a proven record of results of fighting against harmful policies and a status quo mentality to energize diverse teams in a common mission that serves our communities and causes higher than ourselves.

Is there anything else you’d like voters to know about you?

As a life-long Cubs fan and recent Ironman, I know what it takes to develop the grit and hope required for believing and winning tough battles. I am asking not just for votes, but the teamwork of Region Hoosiers to believe and join me in bringing forward a new day for Northwest Indiana and our country.

  2. A HEART FOR SERVICE: I thrive off of being a public servant and am grateful for the opportunity to serve my community in numerous ways including having been an assistant track coach for the local high school, co-leading a club at the local high school, volunteering for a local fire department, and serving in several events for numerous volunteer organizations.

I've been happily married to my husband, Doug, for seven years. We have a two-year-old son and a baby girl on the way. As a resident of La Porte County since childhood and raising my family here, I am committed to being involved and giving back to my community. I support first responders, being one myself, and appreciate their incredible value and dedication. I took over as trustee mid-term in 2020, unsure of what all it would entail. Nearly two years in, I can proudly say this role fits my passions and experience well. It is my honor and privilege to serve Clinton Township. I will continue to work hard and make it a priority to improve LaPorte County to the best of my abilities.

What is your candidate platform?

I have never wanted to be involved with politics but I believe we need more people to run for office, that love God and our Country and will stand for our children and our families. These are serious times and they demand a serious statesman/woman that is willing to stand against the radical left-wing agenda, at all costs.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. I am not a member of the political bureaucracy.
  2. I am just a concerned citizen that is willing to speak out against corruption and evil.
  3. I will defend our liberties and support the Constitution.

I don’t consider myself as better than anyone else. If elected, I plan to humbly serve the constituents that elected me. I want to be held accountable as a woman of integrity and to bring open communication and transparency to the communities I serve.

Sheriff Candidate: Andrew Morse

What office are you running for? La Porte County Sheriff

What political party are you affiliated with? Republican Party

What is your education?

  • 1995 graduate of Rogers High School
  • 2003 graduate of the 156th session of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (Plainfield, Indiana)

What is your occupation? Patrol Deputy La Porte County Sheriff’s Office/Part-Time School Resource Officer

What is your candidate platform?

First and foremost I want to continue to provide my services and personal sacrifices to ensure everyone stays safe and can live with peace on their minds in La Porte County! To aid in this, one of the major things I want to focus on is to make sure the Women and Men of the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office have a bigger voice when it comes to their wages and benefits! There is another pandemic in this country right now with the shortage of good Women and Men entering the Law Enforcement/Corrections profession and having low wages is one of the biggest turn aways. A couple of common statements a Police Officer hears are “you can’t pay me enough to do your job” or “you don’t make enough”! Well, we need to change that and I believe we can! We are not asking to become rich, because we did not choose this career for the money but we at least need to make the salaries at the LCSO competitive with the surrounding Agencies who are offering way more to gain and retain employees. Without at least having a competitive wage we are going to continue to lose great women and men to these other Agency’s/professions. This I believe will cause the LCSO to be just a stepping stone in the future which in turn our service to the Public could suffer (longer response times due to manpower shortages and having less experienced officers) to name a few ways. With this being said I want to work closely with the Local and State Fraternal Order of Police Leaders to explore the options and benefits of creating a Collective Bargaining Agreement (contract). I believe having a contract at the LCSO would give a bigger voice to the Women and Men who dedicate their lives to keeping our Communities safe but I would also leave it up to these same Women and Men to make the final decision on this. I however do believe it will not only help retain employees but also will be a huge asset to attracting great applicants in the future. Yes, there are only a few Sheriff’s Offices in Indiana that have a CBA but the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office is no different than these other Agencies and it can and needs to stand out to make it THE Department for every Police Officer wants to work for and having a CBA is one way we can accomplish this. There are several other things I would like to accomplish if I am blessed by being elected as the next Sheriff including strengthening our mental health assistance for our employees as several of the other candidates have also mentioned. I would lean on not only these men but our on-staff counselors, our chaplains, and local clergy to assist in this serious issue. We do and see things that are just not normal and for too long have just ignored the issue and we just can’t do that any longer. Having a Peer Support team would also be high on the to accomplish list. I want to continue to build on our School Resource Officer Program within the County. We have a great group of Deputies keeping our most precious commodities safe right now and being a part-time SRO I know the positive impact these positions can have on our future leaders. I never thought in a million years I would want to go back to school but I now see the difference an SRO can make in a child’s life and I will definitely always be an advocate for the program. I would like to see some of our SROs bring back the D.A.R.E. Program in their Schools. As many of you know our current Sheriff due to him being your D.A.R.E Officer years ago, you also know the impact of that program and how it can aid in getting our youth to “Just Say No!” There are several small internal traditions and policies that I would like to see changed as well. I want to work WITH the Women and Men of the Sheriff’s Office to accomplish these tasks which I also believe will help make the LCSO and better place to work. I know accomplishing all these issues and more will not be easy to do but if we all work together I know we can. I will make one definite promise and that is that my duty gear and uniform will NOT be hung in a closet should I win this election. I plan to work side by side with ALL the Women and Men of the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office as I have for 21 years to continue to make La Porte County a Great and Safe place to live.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. I am no Politician, I am a Police Officer. Politics have no business being in the Law Enforcement Profession. We take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America and Indiana period.
  2. I am a very open-minded person and believe everyone’s opinion should matter.
  3. I will NOT be hidden in the office every day. I will be working side by side with ALL the staff in every division within the Sheriff’s Office throughout our great County.

Is there anything else you’d like voters to know about you?

I am engaged to my beautiful fiancé Elizabeth (Liz) who has worked at All Creature Features Animal Hospital for the past 26yrs. I am the father of 3 great kids, Emma (21), Blake (17), and Alexander (15), and soon-to-be stepfather to 3 bonus kids, Payton (20), Michaela (16), and Ian (14). On my days off from patrolling the streets of La Porte County, you can find me during the school year out at New Prairie Middle School where I am a part-time SRO. I was a K-9 Handler for 11 years handling 2 K9’s. A Belgian Malinois Mirza (2009-EOW 2013) and a German Shepherd Jäger (2013-2020). I am a 13-year member of the Indiana District 1 Law Enforcement Task Force and have trained across the Country in Domestic Terrorism and Civil Unrest. When I am not working, my family and I enjoy spending time in the outdoors fishing, hunting or just enjoying a campfire somewhere in our 8 acres of woods in northeast Center Township. I am a two-time finisher of the Chicago Marathon and spend as much time as I can at Fitness Plus gym because I love doughnuts (power rings) too much. I love to just have fun because; YOLO!

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. I have worked harder than any trustee in our county for the last 8 years. I am a full-time trustee that gives 110%.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

What is your occupation?

  • Elected to the La Porte County Council
  • Currently, President of the Council Broker Associate with Century 21 Affiliated (licensed in Indiana and Michigan)
  • Retired Fire Chief Michigan City Fire Department

What is your candidate platform?

Responsibly moving La Porte County forward while being fiscally responsible. Improving the quality of life for all our residents. Open communication, transparency, working across party lines to find the best solution(s) possible.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IS A MUST: I will continue to make sound, well-thought-out decisions while continuing to move La Porte County forward. Our county is in good financial shape, because of sound budgeting. I can assure you that I (and the Council) have been working with all department heads for strategic planning - while being fiscally responsible.
  2. A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE adds VALUE to our county's citizens. I believe that quality of life starts with local government - the roads we drive on, the parks we enjoy, employment opportunities, education, health and safety, emergency response, property and homes, and more. I support all of our emergency services - for well over three decades I've worked in public safety, including side-by-side with emergency medical services (EMS) and law enforcement, and I truly understand the need to fund and support their operations. This absolutely includes supporting all of our other county departments as well. Finding solutions for addiction, drug abuse, and mental health issues. I support strong emergency services, as well as Problem Solving Court and Veterans Court - I make it a priority to attend every graduation. These programs work hard and have shown success at rehabilitation, helping La Porte County citizens with a second chance. I have facilitated meetings, and continue to work with organizations to bring future rehab facilities to La Porte County. I will also continue to focus on safe and well-maintained county roads. Especially, as we come out of each winter, our roads always need repair. I want our paving dollars maximized by seeking grants and federal funds. I will continue to support the creation and retention of living-wage jobs in our county. I personally know what it's like to work more than one job to make ends meet while raising my own family right here in La Porte County. We need to continue our collaboration between La Porte City, Michigan City, and La Porte County for Economic Development. We also need to continue the work of developing a trained workforce to fill new jobs and existing jobs.
  3. MY GOAL is always to be “part of the solution with my proven experience, hard work, core values, and a common-sense approach. I believe in reaching out in a bipartisan fashion, to find common ground for a better La Porte County. I will continue to represent our county with integrity, respecting all citizens with open and honest transparency. I maintain an open line of communication and am engaged with the public in our county. In an effort to improve relationships, I also meet with our state officials in Indianapolis and other locations, whenever possible.

Is there anything else you'd like voters to know about you?

It is an honor to serve the citizens of La Porte County. The last couple of years, we have had to adapt to a new way of doing county business. When the pandemic first hit, I saw the need to bring our whole county together for better communication – including towns, cities, the health department, hospitals, schools, community leaders, non-for-profits, and more. Throughout La Porte County we are now communicating better by openly sharing information. We have had these scheduled meetings for two years now, and I hope to continue this open and informative exchange of information. As I see it, these meetings have become essential for our county. I have professional experience specific to public service - business, finance, contract negotiation, mediation, managing multimillion-dollar budgets, and capital expenditures. As a resident of La Porte County since childhood and raising my family here, I am committed to being very involved, because I want to add value to our community. I support Veterans - my dad served in the Korean War, and my father-in-law served in World War II. I am thankful to all who are serving and have served our country. I have spent the last eight years working as your county councilman - I believe that I am making a positive difference. Since elected, I have been present at every council meeting, except for one - when my grandson was born.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS + COMMITTED TO THE COMMUNITY + DEDICATED TO PROGRESS: I want to continue working for you - as a voice of reason, to keep La Porte County moving forward. Your support is appreciated!

What is your candidate platform?

  • Constitutional Protection: I will work to ensure that the rights guaranteed by the Constitutions of both Indiana and the United States are protected and kept safe from government overreach.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  2. Real-World Experience- I'm a former over-the-road truck driver. I worked as a Correctional Officer at Indiana State Prison. I have worked minimum wage jobs to feed my family. I've worked on my own vehicle because I couldn't afford to take it to the shop (and because it can be fun). We need representatives that understand the real world, have worked real jobs, and love this country.
  3. I am Pro-Life, Pro-Family, Pro Free Speech, Pro 2A,

Cajun by birth, Hoosier by choice - I chose Northwest Indiana because I love it. The urban area gives way to miles of farmland in just moments, and the people are some of the friendliest around. As an OTR truck driver, I could have chosen anywhere to live. I chose here.

State Senator Candidate: Rodney Pol, Jr.

Website: rodneyforindiana.com

What office are you running for? State Senate - District 4

What political party are you affiliated with? Democratic Party

What is your education? Juris Doctorate

What is your occupation? City Attorney

What is your candidate platform?

I am running for re-election to preserve, strengthen, and advance Indiana's public education system, our environment, and our labor and workforce as well as to protect our most vulnerable populations including women and minorities. The quality of life in Indiana is noticeably in decline between attacks on our teachers and schools, our air, soil and water, and our unions and workers. Our public safety and health also continuously suffer while the supermajority in the legislature schemes up the next group to needlessly attack, while also stripping local control but claiming to be for small government. I plan to continue to stop these harmful efforts and gain reasonable bi-partisan support for common-sense progress that enhances our quality of life as I have already this session.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. I was born and raised to a blue-collar Northwest Indiana family of steelworkers and teachers. I not only understand our issues in the region, but I've been working tirelessly in public service at the local and state level to address those issues for my entire professional career. This includes prior work in the Indiana legislature, the local and state public education system, the criminal justice system, local environmental and public safety issues, among countless others. In the super minority, you have to play constant and intense defense. With few caucus members, Democrats have much more legislative ground to cover, requiring you to serve on more committees than your Republican colleagues, who also file nearly 4 times as many bills. Being well-rounded, quick-witted, and ready to defend is absolutely vital as a Democratic Senator in the super minority. Those are some of my strengths.
  2. I have the trust, endorsement, and full support of labor unions such as all of District 7 (Indiana and Illinois) of the United Steelworkers and the Laborers Local 81 as well as numerous elected officials like Sen. Karen Tallian and the Indiana Democratic Senate Caucus. These endorsements are indicative of true Northwest Indiana leadership and service and I could not be more proud to carry that torch.
  3. I already have a proven track record of being able to get things done for our district and already earned a reputation as one of the most productive and "thoughtful" members in the Caucus. Despite being in a super minority, I've successfully helped kill terrible bills and passed several amendments to make bad bills better and good bills great through bipartisan negotiation and solid legal and policy positions. I've also proudly drafted and passed multiple legislative measures with full bipartisan support to greatly assist our public schools and veterans. I'm incredibly proud to have already brought positive change to the Senate and our state.

Is there anything else you'd like voters to know about you?

At 37 years old, I am the youngest serving State Senator, but also have the most experience in this primary field. I am also the very first Latino State Senator to ever serve in Indiana. Bringing youth and diversity to the Senate are incredibly important for our state, particularly at this moment, and I could not be more proud to serve in that regard.

What is your occupation? Self-employed Carpenter

What is your candidate platform?

LEYVA'S POSITIONS ON AMERICA FIRST ISSUES

  • PRO SECOND AMENDMENT I am a solid Pro 2nd Amendment candidate who owns two firearms and has a lifetime conceal carry permit. Responsible ownership of a firearm is very important to protect us from a Foreign, Domestic or Tyrannical government. In 2020 the GOA survey I scored an A Rating.
  • LAW & ORDER ENFORCEMENT Social order is the framework needed to maintain a prosperous society. Without Laws and the Enforcement of these laws, we are no longer a civilized society. Therefore, I DEFEND THE BLUE and support providing them with all the tools and training necessary to safely do their jobs.
  • BORDER PROTECTION Under the U.S. Constitution, this is one of our top priorities MANDATED by our forefathers. Without a border, we are not a country. Today's weak border has resulted in Higher Crime, Lower Wages, and more potential Pandemics. Open borders are also a National Security risk--we need a system to know and approve those who enter our country.
  • US CONSTITUTION DEFENDER I swear my allegiance to the U.S. Constitution and God only.
  • VOTER INTEGRITY Free and Fair Elections are the bedrock of our nation. If our people lose confidence in the integrity in our elections, the nation will crumble. We need to follow our state election laws and prosecute the people who don't!
  • ENERGY INDEPENDENCE Under the Trump energy independence plan, we enjoyed gas priced under $2 a gallon. One year later, that same gallon of gas is almost $4 per gallon. Energy Independence is Economic Freedom that results in lower retail prices because everything we purchase is transported on trucks that use fuel.
  • JOBS / ECONOMY Conservative policies result in good-paying jobs and a STRONG economy. Today you are experiencing the impact of Democratic policies--big handouts don't provide any jobs.
  • PRO-LIFE I am a pro-life candidate who knows that life starts at conception. I also believe that our tax dollars should not fund clinics that perform abortions. (The fact in that some of these clinics harvest infant body parts to sell for profit.)
  • PATENT REFORM/STRENGTHEN AMERICAN PATENTS The Orwellian America Invents Act and multiple Supreme Court rulings have gutted the patent system for small inventors and startups resulting in the loss of hundreds of tech jobs in Gary, Indiana. According to new laws written "in the swamp", patents are no longer property rights, they are now public franchises. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been dumped on Washington politicians by the likes of Google, Facebook, Amazon and other tech monopolists to buy these new laws. This is dangerous for America and American national security. For example, last year 48% of early-stage funding of Artificial Intelligence startups went to Chinese firms! Only 36% supported American firms. Artificial Intelligence controls our power grid, our military tanks and ships. Unfortunately, it does not stop with Artificial Intelligence. Funding in all of tech is up in China and down here. If America is going to be great again, we must restore strong patent rights and turn back the swamp.
  • SCHOOL VOUCHERS Our children deserve the very best education possible. Attaching education dollars to our children, parents should make the ultimate decision as to where their children get their education.
  • END CRT Critical Race Theory is the toxic indoctrination of our children. This teaches Black children they are Victims, and White children they are the Oppressors.
  • SEMA RPM ACT America First Agenda, manufacturing aftermarket parts for new cars in the U.S. will create new jobs and more tax revenue.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. I am a Constitutional Conservative Republican
  2. I want to Drain the Swamp
  3. AMERICA FIRST CANDIDATE

Is there anything else you'd like voters to know about you?

I consider myself the "Peoples Choice" not the Party's Choice.

LaPorte County Commissioner Candidate: Liz Bergeron

Candidate Websitelizbergeron.com

What office are you running for? La Porte County Commissioner District 1

What political party are you affiliated with? Republican Party

What is your education? I graduated in 1998 from Munster High School. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Healthcare Administration with a concentration in Long-Term Care. I am currently working toward my MBA in Public Administration.

What is your occupation? I am an Indiana Medicaid Waiver Case Manager working with those who receive the Family Supports Waiver and the Community Integration and Habilitation Waiver. I am also certified as a Care Manager for those who receive the Aging and Disabled Waiver. I currently work with individuals in Lake, Porter, La Porte, St. Joseph, and Pulaski counties.

What is your candidate platform?

My platform is based on three core issues: Growth, Respect, and Accountability.

  1. Growth: I will work to grow La Porte County's economy, population, and housing opportunities. When we grow, we win. We have seen a loss of approximately 93 residents each year or more for decades. We have seen business opportunities pass us by for years. We are in need of increased housing opportunities and the introduction of high-tech companies to make La Porte County their home. For every 1 high tech job, two support jobs and ten community jobs are built. As Commissioner I will work closely with Economic Development groups to attract new business to our county. I will work to find a solution to the housing crisis we are facing and work to grow our gateway communities. I will work to make La Porte County the envy of the state.
  2. Respect: I respect our first responders, highway department, and county employees and will be their biggest cheerleader in county government. I will respect those in our agricultural community as the backbone of not only our county but our nation. I will respect the taxpayers of our county by ensuring their government runs efficiently and does not waste money on things like a county website that does not run properly or quickly or things like continuing to support the idea that Commissioners deserve to each have a county vehicle, instead using that money for the betterment of the county. I will respect our Gateway communities and work to make those communities, which are the first community seen by those coming from surrounding areas, more vibrant and successful. I will respect the small towns and areas that seem to only matter at election time.
  3. Accountability: I will work to ensure our county government works as it should. I will ensure the bidding process is respected and followed, allowing the public to have the access to this process that they are entitled to but often banned from. I will work with others to ensure our county is properly zoned and coded. I will work to ensure that our infrastructure is protected and safe for everyone in the county. This includes clean water, paved and painted roads, reliable internet access, bridges that work and are cost-effective, and ensuring unseen infrastructure is working and safe.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. I'm not a career politician. I don't have anyone I owe favors to. I have no backs to scratch. I only have a duty to serve the county and those that call it home. My job requires me to travel to our surrounding areas and allows me to learn and get ideas about what could work in our county and how to make it better. I will work hard and fight hard for this county and always have time for you.
  2. I have varied professional experience that no other candidate or current Commissioner has. I spent six years in Law Enforcement as a Correctional Officer at Indiana State Prison which will allow me to have the knowledge and experience needed when it comes time to decide to renovate or rebuild the county jail and to also have knowledge in the debate of moving Indiana State Prison that is currently happening in Michigan City. This allows me to know what plans will work and which ideas are best for these capital projects and issues. I also have professional experience in IT, Project Management, Insurance, Finance, and Social Services. I've handled budgets of all sizes and have worked for Fortune 500 companies to save them millions of dollars. I've coordinated and managed cross-country movement and established collection cities for Apple, making me responsible for staff and equipment valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars. I have experience in team building and management, and in finding solutions and resources to problems. I'm not someone who is okay with only working 10 weeks out of the year.
  3. I will work to ensure organizations such as Paladin receive the funding and support that they have gone without. This organization is near and dear to my heart as is the population they serve, and I feel it's time they had a voice in county government.

Is there anything else you'd like voters to know about you?

I've been married to my husband, Dion (Indiana State Rep District 9 candidate), for twelve years this March and together we have five kids. I'm a La Porte County Special Olympics Pickleball volunteer. I'm a third and fourth-generation American on both sides of my family, raised in a family that has worked in the steel mills for generations, and a Volunteer Firefighter daughter. I have lived in La Porte County for almost 19 years. It wasn't until 2020, when the world slowed down, that I was no longer able to distract myself with other things, that I realized for our County to grow and succeed, things needed to change. I could either sit back and just complain or I could try to be the difference I wanted to see. So, in August, I decided to become a candidate and started talking to people about their issues and concerns. I learned a lot and became very vocal with what I had learned. I began to publicly share my findings and ideas on Facebook. I am active on Facebook and my website. I am always out and about and always willing to have discussions and learn about the concerns of my neighbors. I care all the time, not just for a vote or at election time. I will continue to care, and I will always work hard and fight to make La Porte County the best place to work and live.

  3. Educate voters and focus on the national debt. ($30 trillion)

Sheriff Candidate: Al Ott

Candidate Website: ottforsheriff.com

What office are you running for? LaPorte County Sheriff

What political party are you affiliated with? Democratic Party

What is your education?

  • La Porte High School
  • Ball State University (Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science)
  • Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) Honors Graduate
  • ILEA Certified Firearms Instructor (23 years)

What is your occupation? Captain/Jail Commander for the La Porte County Sheriff's Office, serving for 28 years

What is your candidate platform? Efficiency. Integrity. Public Service. These three pillars will resonate throughout the Sheriff's Office. We accomplish this by coming to work every day with focus and driven energy. I am committed to keeping our community safe by finding modern solutions to modern problems and implementing them. Our world is constantly evolving and the willingness to change with it is a good character trait to have. The relationship with the Sheriff's Office and our community is strong however, we need to continue building upon that bond. Although crime is a complex problem with multiple factors feeding into it, good old-fashioned hard work and diligence will aid in combating that. Those that know me, know that effort is one of my strongest qualities. If everybody gives 100% effort our community benefits and we accomplish these goals.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. Humble Leadership. The number one goal of the Sheriff is to lead a public safety organization that keeps its community safe. But, to achieve that goal, a Sheriff must be a humble leader, diligent learner, and public servant. I have supported the implementation of Jail Officer Leadership Training (JOLT), an ongoing leadership program for supervisors created by the training staff in the Jail Division. This also included diversity training for every staff member to help create a better and more caring workforce. These efforts have paid off as the LaPorte County Jail has been fully staffed since 2018 with a waiting list for the first time in the Jail's employment history.
  2. Family Oriented. I come from a law enforcement family. I was raised by a police officer and now raise my family as one. For the past 21 years, I have supported my daughters in their ambitions and have proudly watched them achieve their goals in life. Now as collegiate basketball players, my wife and I attend all of their games and cheer them on. I will bring the same quality of family values to all of the employees at the Sheriff's Office.
  3. Experience. I've worked in numerous capacities in my nearly 28-year career with the Sheriff's Office. Since 1994, I have served as a Jail Deputy, Merit Deputy, Detective, Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Captain, and most recently, Jail Commander. I have worked tirelessly to save taxpayer dollars by negotiating a new medical contract to provide 24/7 medical care for inmates and privatizing the Jail kitchen which saved well over $300,000 per year. I have demonstrated fiscal responsibility in my time as Jail Commander and plan to use this knowledge in my role as Sheriff.

Is there anything else you’d like voters to know about you?

I am happily married to my wife Jami and we will be celebrating our Silver Anniversary this year. We have two intelligent and talented daughters who both attend Purdue University Fort Wayne where they also play basketball. Jami and I can be found chasing them across the country at all of their games.

LaPorte County Commissioner Candidate: Sheila Matias

Websitefacebook.com/VoteSheilaM

What office are you running for? County Commission, District 1

What political party are you affiliated with? Democratic Party

What is your education?

  • Bachelor's degree: John Carroll University
  • Master's degree: Valparaiso University

What is your occupation? Management and Education: Executive Director, Purdue Northwest (The Leadership Institute and the Society of Innovators); small business owner

What is your candidate platform?

  • I believe it is critical to pay first responders and county employees a fair, competitive wage so that public safety and community services remain strong and public safety and service employees feel rewarded for exceptional work.
  • Jobs, jobs, jobs: Good jobs promote healthy families and children. Family-wage Jobs-While we've had great success in the last 3 years, this requires focus and effort; I am experienced in economic development and know that the county must focus on retaining the companies we have, helping small businesses to grow and be successful, and attracting new companies to make their home in LaPorte County.
  • Rural broadband: Our children deserve high-speed internet so they can gain the skills they need to be successful. So do small businesses, families, schools, health care facilities, and our elders.....we've made progress but this is a heavy lift and more "pushing" is needed to get the job done. I've been leading the task force and hope to continue this important work with our team of experts.
  • Housing-making smart choices in regards to adding housing stock to our county. This is a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. This is not a job for rookies. As a complex business, the county needs strong and experienced leadership. This is a multi-million dollar operation and we need experienced leaders who know how to carefully balance the needs vs. the wants with available tax funds. That's your money and I take that seriously. It's important to live within your means just like we do at home.
  2. Despite the politics and the "noise", I am not deterred by this but remain focused on being positive and taking care of my constituents whether they live in rural LaPorte County or in a town or city. I work for you.
  3. I am seasoned and I am family-focused with solid values that are important to me. Like you, I want to leave the world better than I found it and hope to strengthen our community so that it is a great place for our children and grandchildren. I understand your concerns and am a good listener and thought partner.

Is there anything else you'd like voters to know about you?

I ask for your support. With all the discord and tumult in politics these days, an experienced leader with a level-head is needed. I have come to realize that my steady hand of experience and a respectful voice is needed now more than ever. I continue to speak for real people and real families while promoting a community culture of respect, equity, and kindness. I believe that once the election is over, I work for everyone even those who disagree with me on an issue. I try my best to be very careful with your money, ask the hard questions and push back when I need to do so. I believe in consistency and straight-talk- I will be the Sheila you can always count on, using a combination of good old-fashioned common sense and my business leadership experience, while representing everyone with respect to the best of my ability. It is a privilege to represent the people of LaPorte County. It has been an honorable experience to work with the dedicated county team who even during the most difficult days of the Covid crisis, do what is needed day in and day out, going above and beyond to provide care and stellar services to the people of our county. It has been an honor to serve you and I hope to count on your support as we go forward.

What office are you running for? La Porte County Sheriff

What political party are you affiliated with? Democratic Party

What is your education? High School

What is your occupation? Patrol Sergeant with the La Porte County Sheriff's Office. I have been with the LCSO since 1999.

What is your candidate platform?

I want to implement a Trauma Response Team that will respond to critical and high-stress incidents. Our officers deserve to have mental health experts available on scene to immediately address any concerns the officers may have. My administration will patrol periodically to not only maximize our availability to the officers and the public but to fill in when or where more officers are needed. I will reinstitute the GED and literacy programs in the jail. This will benefit the community at no cost to the county. I will restore ministerial access to those citizens in the jail that request it. I will outfit the jail staff with body armor. Their job is dangerous and they deserve personal protection. I want to increase the size of our patrol staff, due to the size of our county and the number of calls for service. I will create a more inviting, fair and friendly work environment where ALL employees will have access to the same opportunities for advancement or movement within the department. This will include revamping the promotional process and updating the evaluation process. I will work to add another mechanic to the La Porte County Sheriff's garage. Their workload demands it. I will have the jail supervisors certified to run certified breath tests on station. This way there will always be someone available on station to run the tests for purposes of DUI investigations no matter which agency makes the arrest.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. I intend to foster a healthy and positive work environment that will not only improve morale within the walls of the department but will undoubtedly strengthen our relationship with the public.

What is your occupation? Currently retired, the last occupation was the mayor of Michigan City, Indiana

What is your candidate platform? I have a legacy of getting things accomplished when no one else could because I believe in the process of working across party lines. If the residents and the voters want someone that will get results and have a significant impact on outcomes, then I am that person. It is imperative to work across party lines legislatively to ensure that Indiana's 4th district is successfully represented. As a two-term mayor, I have a deep understanding of the resident's needs and the day-to-day operations of cities and towns. Through a series of collaborations, I worked to forge strong partnerships to spearhead over a billion dollars in public and private economic development and investment. The progress my administration fulfilled from 2012 to 2020 still benefits Northwest Indiana today. For several years, I have played an integral role in making the South Shore commuter rail double track project a reality in our region. My working relationship with the last two Indiana governors was a successful one. In 2019 Governor Eric Holcomb appointed me to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District board of trustees. My history also includes a strong record of protecting the environment and initiating environmental clean-up projects. I believe that protecting Lake Michigan and its tributaries is crucial to the future of Indiana. Working in the public sector has been very rewarding for me. I believe my combined experience of 35 years which consists of being a city and state employee, city councilman, and mayor, will be an asset when collaborating with government officials at all levels. If the voters choose to give me the opportunity, I will continue to strive for a standard of excellence for all of Indiana.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election. I have over 30 years of municipal government experience. During that 30 years, I have worked with local-level, county-level, state, and federal level of governmental affairs this experience is extremely important as being a state senator. I have been an avid fisherman and outdoorsman my entire life the environment is extremely important to me. As Mayor, I had a track record of protecting the environment and spearheading major environmental cleanup projects. I have a strong proven record and supporting law enforcement during my eight years as being mayor We were able to provide the men and women of the police department one of the finest state of the art police station facilities in the state of Indiana Also making sure that they were getting pay raises and providing them with over a half-million dollars in equipment Vehicles and other protective devices.

Sheriff Candidate: Ron Heeg

What office are you running for? Sheriff of LaPorte County

What political party are you affiliated with? Republican Party

What is your education?

  • Michigan City Area Schools
  • Indiana University South Bend with an associate degree in criminal justice,
  • Indiana Law Enforcement Academy
  • Leadership LaPorte County
  • University of Louisville's Southern Police Institute's leadership studies.

What is your occupation? Chief Deputy of the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office

What is your candidate platform? My platform consists of three strategic goals:

  1. Public safety. The two biggest issues that LaPorte County law enforcement faces today, is drug and mental health problems; with there being a direct correlation between the two.
  2. Personnel Investment. With the average life span of a police officer only being 57 years of age, this is 22 years less than the average American of 79 years of age. Also, suicide rates amongst police officers are twice that of the national average. We can and must do better for our deputies, as a mentally and physically fit deputy is a productive deputy.
  3. Community Investment. Too often we ask our communities to invest into our Sheriff's Office. I feel that this should be a two-way street and the Sheriff's Office needs to invest into our communities.

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. Experience, I am in my 25th year at the Sheriff's Office, beginning my career within the Jail division. I was then promoted to merit deputy, where I spent 10 years as a patrolman, I then became a detective and spent four years investigating "crimes against person" cases. I was then promoted to Sergeant and spent two years as a shift supervisor, where I was then again transferred to the detective bureau and served as the Assistant Chief of Detectives for two years, until I was appointed and still serve as Sheriff Boyd's Chief Deputy for the last 7 years. I also spent 15 years on the Emergency Response Team; the last four of which I was the team commander, I spent 15 years as a certified diver for the scuba team, and I was a four-year Field Training Officer.
  2. Leadership & (3) Community Involvement. I serve as President of the board or directors for Grand Heritage Federal Credit Union in LaPorte. President of the board of directors for Stepping Stone Shelter for Women in Michigan City. Vice-President of LaPorte County Triad. Advisory board member of Indiana Homeland Security District 1 Taskforce, and a member of LaPorte County Farm Bureau since 2005.

What is your candidate platform? My Platform is your platform, the taxpayers. For far too long others platforms have not aligned with what you have wanted. What you want is to not have blinders put on you and led astray!

What is your education?

What is your candidate platform? La Porte County must be operated in the same manner as a successful business in order to properly serve its residents. Government can be likened to a service industry that must provide infrastructure and security to those that live and invest within its communities. Communities that are safe and well maintained always thrive. Since county income comes from the residents and business owners, it is the County Council's role to be responsible stewards of those funds to support interests that affect the livelihood and happiness of the taxpayers. Why not include a member that views local government roles in that way?

Give three reasons why voters should consider you this election.

  1. My professional background is in large industry and related business practices which brings a different perspective to the existing council.
  2. In everything that I do, I have a strong determination to achieve the goal set in front of me. In this case, the goal is established by the voters and taxpayers.
