(La Porte, IN) - Code enforcement in La Porte has begun approaching citizens about taking back their unwanted trash from beside the streets.
Possible fines could be issued especially if action by residents is not taken right away.
Code Enforcement Director Jeff Batchelor said the city will work with individuals such as senior citizens who might need assistance with the task.
“We’ll try to help where we can, but if you got your whole house sitting out on the street you got to take responsibility for that,” he said.
The problem stems from artificial intelligence taking the correction information from the city and publishing the wrong dates for the upcoming fall clean-up where residents can place old furniture and other unwanted items along the curb for Waste Management to haul away during the week.
The fall clean-up doesn’t begin until October 19.
Last week, the city gave a Monday deadline for the trash to be moved back inside until the actual fall clean-up week but not many people seemed to listen.
“There’s a lot that’s still beside the road,” he said.
