(Three Oaks, Michigan) - The public will have a chance to see La Porte native and former major league baseball star pitcher, Ron Reed.

 

“A Special Evening with Ron Reed” is scheduled October 6 at Vickers Theatre in nearby Three Oaks, Michigan.

 

Reed, a 1961 graduate of La Porte High School, went to the University of Notre Dame on a basketball scholarship but also played baseball.  He played for the NBA’s Detroit Pistons for two-years before launching a 19-year career as a major league pitcher.

 

He was an All-Star in 1968 and a World Series champion with the 1980 Philadelphia Phillies.  Reed is one of only 13 people to play in both the NBA and MLB.

 

Admission is free.  The program will begin at 6 p.m. (Eastern Time.)

 

The Biggest Little Baseball Museum across the street from Vickers Theatre will be hosting the event.

 

Garry Lange, the founder of the museum, said a friend who knows Reed put him in touch with him and he quickly accepted his offer to come and talk about his career in baseball.

 

"He is one of five pitchers in major league history with 100 wins, 100 saves and 50 complete games.   That's pretty special company," he said.

 

Reed now lives in Georgia. 

 

Donations of used baseballs, softballs, baseball books along with money will be accepted at the event by volunteers with the museum.
