(New Buffalo, MI) - A cargo ship outside the harbor in New Buffalo captured the attention of a lot of people at and near the lakefront.

 

City Manager Darwin Watson said he saw the large vessel on Monday from U.S. 12 and Whittaker St. and went to take pictures of it on Tuesday but it was no longer there.  The freighter was about a quarter mile to a half mile from the Lake Michigan shoreline north and east of the entrance to the harbor.

 

Watson said he didn’t know how long the cargo ship had been there but it wasn’t here at the end of the day on Friday.  The city was never informed about the freighter or where it came from and what it might be carrying.

 

“That’s all I can really tell you,” he said.

 

Historically, freighters pass by and anchor down until space opens up to accept their cargo at places like the Port of Indiana at Burns Harbor.  Watson said the ship looked freighters that carry supplies for making things like steel at the mills along the southern tip of the lake.

 

“It was huge like that,” he said.
