(La Porte County, IN) - A public hearing that was supposed to occur Monday evening on a proposed new local income tax in La Porte County was cancelled.

 

That’s because not enough advance public notice was given of the special meeting called to listen to how citizens feel about the proposed tax that would fund the county-owned ambulance service.

 

The public must be given 10 days advance notice of such meetings.

 

La Porte County Council President Adam Koronka said the meeting was cancelled during the afternoon once the shortfall in the public notice requirement was discovered.

 

“We had to cancel the meeting in order to make sure we were within adequate lawful notice of the public to have such a meeting,” he said.

 

The public hearing has been rescheduled for October 14.   A vote by the council is expected at its regularly scheduled session on October 26.

 

The average income earner would pay about $140 a year more in local income taxes if the proposal projected to generate $6 million annually is adopted.

 

Koronka said he's not sure yet if the public notice mistake was made in-house or by the publications that were supposed to publish the notices.
