Power Outages from Strong Morning Storms

(La Porte County, IN) - NIPSCO is working to restore power to customers whose service was knocked out during strong thunderstorms this morning.

According to NIPSCO, more than 2,600 customers were without power early this afternoon throughout its entire northern Indiana service territory.

NIPSCO reported just over 100 customers without power in its La Porte service territory and 84 customers without service in its Michigan City service area. According to the La Porte Water Department, which keeps track of daily precipitation totals, 1.8 inches of rain came down from about 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Michigan City resident Bob Johnson said he had just over one inch of water in his rain gauge at home.  He also said there were several lightning strikes near his home.

“It made you jump a little bit,” he said.
