(La Porte County, IN) - A public hearing has been scheduled over a proposal to impose another local income tax to fund ambulance service in La Porte County.

 

The La Porte County Council will strictly listen to comments from citizens on Monday.

 

Council President Adam Koronka said the tax, if approved, would mean the average income earner paying about $140 dollars more a year in local income taxes. Koronka said the tax would generate about $6 million a year and be used to fund strictly the La Porte County Emergency Medical Service.

 

That would free up about $5 million in the general fund now used to pay for EMS for other purposes such as making up for lost revenue from statewide property tax reform and better keeping up on maintenance of buildings and other physical assets.

 

“All of those funds come to the county for that specific purpose only,” he said.

 

Koronka said no vote will be taken during the public hearing that evening but he expects a decision at the regularly scheduled council meeting on September 28.
