(Michigan City, IN) - A Michigan City man has been publicly recognized for helping a neighbor escape from a burning house.

 

Rich Cains received a life-saving award during last night’s city council meeting from Michigan City Fire Chief Barrett Taylor.

 

The fire occurred about a month ago in the 200 block of William St.

 

Fire Captain Anthony Stahoviak said Cains used his own ladder to reach an already injured person from a second floor deck with the flames advancing.

 

“It is rare to see a person prioritize another life over their own health and safety,” he said.

 

Officials said two people wound up being taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and one of them also had burns. 

 

There were no working smoke detectors in the home, officials said. 

 

Cains was applauded by members of the city council and others in the audience while walking up to receive the award.
