(La Porte County, IN) - A La Porte County man is the owner of a rare car in practically mint condition. Two years ago, Stan Hynek purchased a 1989 Avanti convertible made by Studebaker at its plant in Ohio.
When he found the car for sale online, it was in California inside an air conditioned garage belonging to a woman who drove it for just 11,000 miles after she purchased the car brand new. Only about 100 of the Avanti convertibles with a soft top going up and down at the push of a button were made that year.
Hynek, 83, said he purchased the car for $20,000 but feels it could be worth upwards of $100,000, but he’s not selling. His most recent
offer came while stopped at a traffic light in Michigan City last week.
“Everybody wants to buy it,” he said.
Hynek, who’s from the Rolling Prairie area, said he has put just 100 miles on the car since buying it and having it towed here from California.
