(Indianapolis, IN) - An artist from this area has been selected to design a mural for the Indiana Fever, the WNBA basketball team in Indianapolis.
Alex Allen of South Bend was chosen out of 65 applicants to create a mural on the side of the team’s new sports performance center. Allen has over seven years of full-time experience creating large-scale interior and exterior murals, working primarily in aerosol and latex.
Two years ago, Allen beautified the bare exterior wall of Mucho Mas in the 600 block of Lincolnway. She also painted the south side of the La Porte Public Library Exchange Building on Indiana Avenue. That work closely resembles her concept for the Indiana Fever mural: colorful and geometric.
Allen was chosen as one of three finalists to submit designs for the Fever project. With feedback from over 2,200 community members, Allen’s proposal was the clear favorite, the team said, with respondents praising its bold color, dynamic movement, and inspiring message. The immersive composition will feature the words “Unity, Legacy, Resilience” with a WNBA basketball swishing through a net towards a background of iconic Indianapolis symbols.
“We hope the mural adds something special to the space for our players, staff and everyone who passes by the facility each day,” said Indiana Fever Team President Kelly Krauskopf. Their new $78 million, 108,000-square-foot, three-story training facility is currently under construction in downtown Indianapolis, near Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Allen's 40-by-60-foot mural, which will adorn the north wall facing the City-County Building and the city's Transit Center, will be painted this fall and dedicated next spring at the facility’s opening.
