Wounded State Police Trooper Back Home Recovering

(South Bend, IN) - The Indiana State Police Trooper who was shot in the line of duty last Friday is now home with his family.

One week after being shot three times outside of Michigan City, Sgt. Justin Heflin walked out of South Bend’s Memorial Hospital Friday. Dozens of law enforcement officers and other well-wishers formed an honor guard and saluted Heflin and his family as they walked by. Heflin saluted back and waved before getting into a car.

Along with a video on Facebook of Heflin’s departure, State Police offered a statement on his behalf:

“After a week of strength, determination, and support from friends, family, and the community, today marks a huge step forward. Sgt. Heflin is grateful for the exceptional care he received and for everyone who has kept him in their thoughts.

While the road to full recovery continues, being home is a milestone he’s been looking forward to and one he doesn’t take for granted.”

On the morning of July 10, Heflin exchanged gunfire with a suspect, Kevin Myers (54) of La Porte, following a car chase. Myers later shot and killed himself. Heflin underwent successful surgery for multiple gunshot wounds and is now back home completing his recovery.
