La Porte County Cashes in on Community Crossing Grant

(Indianapolis, IN) - Governor Mike Braun has announced the recipients of recent grant money through the Indiana Department of Transportation.

$84 million is going to 147 Hoosier cities and counties through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. The money will be used to fund local infrastructure improvements, including roads and bridges.

In this round of funding, La Porte County came out on the high end, receiving $1 million. Other local municipalities include:

  • Michigan City $774,697.92
  • Plymouth $717,095.79
  • St. Joseph County $1 million
  • Starke County $750,189.60
  • Valparaiso $1 million
  • Chesterton $297,619.50

Other area communities, such as Walkerton, Wanatah, and Beverly Shores, were awarded grants in a previous round of Community Crossings grants. In total, 340 Hoosier communities have received $165 million through the program for 2026.

“Indiana is the crossroads of America and Hoosiers rely on our strong roads and infrastructure to drive economic growth and strong communities,” said Braun. “I was proud to co-author the Community Crossings program when I was in the General Assembly because it encourages skin in the game from local communities and that will always generate better results.” The program has provided more than $2 billion for local road improvement projects since its inception in 2016.
