(La Porte, IN) - A man fleeing police on a bicycle and on foot in La Porte got away but some belongings he dropped in the pursuit helped lead to his capture.
Jacob Schmidt, 52, is charged in La Porte Circuit Court with multiple counts, including possession of methamphetamine.
According to the charging information, officers knowing Schmidt had a warrant out for his arrest spotted him riding a bicycle on June 8 in the area of Tyler and Washington streets. Schmidt after seeing the officers began peddling in the opposite direction.
Eventually, police said Schmidt got off the bicycle and started fleeing on foot on a nearby trail where he dropped a backpack containing a small amount of methamphetamine and other items such as mail confirming his identity.
Police said a pizza box looking like the one officers saw him eating from just prior to the pursuit was also recovered from the trail.
Schmidt was arrested 10 days later.
