(La Porte, IN) - Several pets died in a house fire in La Porte yesterday afternoon.
Just after 4 p.m., firefighters were called to the 200 block of W. 14th St. and spotted heavy smoke coming from the home. The fire discovered in the kitchen area was fairly quickly put out.
Fire Chief Andy Snyder said the pets were found dead in different areas inside the home. Firefighters along with paramedics tried resuscitating some of the animals but were not successful.
The man living there was not home.
Snyder said it’s possible one of the pets turned on a gas burner to the stove while the man was gone, igniting whatever was above the burner.
“He indicated he had not used that stove and there was a burner that was on,” he said.
Snyder said the flames were confined to the kitchen area but the rest of the home suffered smoke and water damage.
