(La Porte, IN) - The new location has been announced for the La Porte County Family YMCA.
The YMCA will remain in La Porte under plans calling for the facility to be relocated from 901 Michigan Ave. to a near 40 acre site on Truesdell Ave. adjacent to Fox Park.
“La Porte County’s needs continue to evolve, and the YMCA is committed to providing programs and services that meet the community needs today and into the future,” said Scott Helmkamp, CEO of the La Porte County Family YMCA
The new location is envisioned as a year-round gathering place where residents of all ages can move, connect, learn and thrive with expanded accessibility.
“We look forward to partnering with the Y in new and innovative ways and are excited that the new YMCA location will integrate with Fox Park and nearby trails, creating an accessible space to strengthen community well-being for residents of all ages,” said Mark Schreiber, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of La Porte.
The new La Porte location will offer traditional YMCA programming, including youth programs, alongside new offerings developed with community partners. Planned amenities include a wellness area, pool, and gymnasium, all designed to serve individuals and families.
The City of La Porte has received a letter of pre-commitment from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation for a grant anticipated to support development of the new La Porte YMCA location.
“This critical funding reflects the commitment of our regional and state partners to drive economic growth and enhance quality of life for the people of La Porte. Our team was fully committed to competing for these dollars because we heard clearly from residents how needed this project is. This transformational investment will significantly improve health and wellness in our community, and we look forward to working with our partners to bring it to life,” said La Porte Mayor Tom Dermody.
The YMCA is committed to leading a capital campaign that gives individual and organizational donors the opportunity to invest in these projects. At the same time, the YMCA Board of Directors continues to refine a specific fundraising goal and define the impact this effort will make possible.
Community input remains an essential part of the process, and the YMCA invites residents to learn more and share feedback through a brief survey at lpymca.org to help ensure the new branch reflects the needs and aspirations of La Porte.
The proposed plans are subject to approval by the City of La Porte. Timelines, designs and project details are contingent upon receiving the necessary permissions and approvals.
