Charges in Failed Prison Smuggling

(Westville, IN) - A civilian is accused of trying to smuggle marijuana and other contraband into Westville Correctional Facility.

Kervel Williams, 40, of Gary is charged in La Porte Superior Court 2 with Level 5 felony trafficking with an inmate.

According to court documents, prison security personnel on May 18 observed an individual moving south along a fence line with what appeared to be a large bag of suspected contraband.  An officer in a police vehicle entered a corn field and gave several verbal commands for the individual later identified as Williams to stop.

Eventually, police said he dropped to the ground and was taken into custody.

The bag after located was found to contain 120 grams of marijuana; nearly 5,000 grams of tobacco; 22 grams of chewing tobacco; 37 grams of synthetic marijuana and six cellular devices, police said.

Williams, who was still being held in the La Porte County Jail, could face anywhere from a one to six year sentence.
